  • Problems solving oddly acting labels in ie7.

    Okay so this is sort of a double question so I'll split it into two. First part In modern browsers the main bold labels sit above their corresponding form elements, and align to the left as is expected. However in ie7, they randomly site 10-15px inset. I went through the developer tools and could find nothing to fix it. I've made sure all my margins and padding is reset so I don't really understand =S Here's the page demo - link Maybe some of you ie bug fixing genius's know what the problem is? =D Second part Again with labels, this time the in-line ones resident next to the check boxes and radio buttons. In modern browsers again, the side beside the form elements as expected, but not so in ie7 where they take a new line. I've tried floating, changing margins and everything but to no effect in sitting it in-line with the div.checker or div.radio that is created by the uniform Jquery plugin.   • Textarea overflow-x when a user copy-pastes into it?

    Hi, I have a textarea with overflow-x: auto; attributed to it. It works great when a user is typing text into the box by hand. When a user copy pastes a line from a file, however, that is bigger than my textarea, the overflow-x property does not work, instead the textarea wordwraps the long line. Is there a way (maybe javascript) to make overflow-x work on copy-paste? Thanks.

    I am building an application where the user browses certain objects by scrolling and zooming. To change the zoom level I have successfully implemented a "dijit.form.HorizontalSlider" object. Every time the user changes the position of the silder, I can catch the "onChange" call and do something with that. However, the user can also zoom-in by double clicking inside the view zone, at which point the slider should change position automatically to reflect the new zoom level. My question is the following: what function or method should I call in my javascript to update the position of a dojo silder ?   • Drop shadow on a div container?

    I have a searchbox with auto-suggest that pops a div up underneath it with multiple search string suggestions (like google). Is it possible to have drop shadow on the auto-suggest box with CSS or will I need a script of some sort? I tried a background image but the number of suggests can vary from 1 to 10 or 15. I'd prefer something that works in IE6+ and FF2+ if possible. Thanks!

  • Should I Use Anchor, Button Or Form Submit For "Follow" Feature In Rails

    I am developing an application in Rails 3 using a nosql database. I am trying to add a "Follow" feature similar to twitter or github. In terms of markup, I have determined that there are three ways to do this. 1) Use a regular anchor. (Github Uses This Method) <a href="/users/follow?target=Joe">Follow</a> 2) Use a button. (Twitter Uses This Method) <button href="/friendships/create/">Follow</button> 3) Use a form with a submit button. (Has some advantages for me, but I haven't see anyone do it yet.) <form method="post" id="connection_new" class="connection_new" action="/users/follow"> <input type="hidden" value="60d7b563355243796dd8496e17d36329" name="target" id="target"> <input type="submit" value="Follow" name="commit" id="connection_submit"> </form> Since I want to store the user_id in the database and not the username, options 1 and 2 will force me to do a database query to get the actual user_id, whereas option 3 will allow me to store the user_id in a hidden form field so that I don't have to do any database lookups. I can just get the id from the params hash on form submission. I have successfully got each of these methods working, but I would like to know what is the best way to do this. Which way is more semantic, secure, better for spiders, etc...? Is there a reason both twitter and github don't use forms to do this? Any guidance would be appreciated. I am leaning towards using the form method since then I don't have to query the db to get the id of the user, but I am worried that there must be a reason the big guys are just using anchors or buttons for this. I am a newb so go easy on me if I am totally missing something. Thanks!
