  he IncidentsTracker v1.2 System is a system that was developed to track Incidents happening in any particular country. It is incorporated with a maping component to enable end users search for places where an incident has happened, enter data about it and then produce reports.It's a Winforms software that was developed in a plugin style using C#  with an extensibility pattern/framework. It sits on an SQl Server backend but can also use any other databases prefered. Its Administrator just has to add the path where the database will be and it will autio create the database. This software was orignally developed to help UN Agancies and NGOs in thier work but can also be ustilised by other entities like the police, the human rights organisations, roads authority, etc etc. The development of a newer version(IncidentTracker v2) has been started in silverlight. • sbackup: can not mount FTP automatically

  In the sbackup configuration GUI i set the ftp://user:pw@online/storage and it's marked as successfully connected. After daily backup time, I checked the ftp and it was empty. In the error mail it says: Error in _do_mount: volume doesn't implement mount [ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED - Operation not supported for the current backend.] Unable to mount: volume doesn't implement mount File access manager not initialized When restarting the sbackup GUI, it is no longer connected to the ftp and i have to click the button again to connect the remote directory - although it still knows my user/pw. How to save this permanently?

• Loud and annoying noise on login

  I have a PC with Kubuntu 13.10 64-bit on it. The problem is that whenever I log in (automatic log in is enabled), there is a loud double-click noise that sounds from the speakers whether the volume is muted or not. I have two sound cards; the motherboard audio, which is disabled in the BIOS, and the Creative! Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi SB0460, which I have normal speakers plugged into. Does anyone know how to fix this? Relative lspci lines: 00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. • Pay for Graphic Designer vs Programmer

  In a corporate web-design setup, who typically makes more per hour, the graphic designer or the programmer? By graphic designer, I mean somebody who builds mockups probably in photoshop, selects font-styles, colors, etc. Most things layout-wise are near pixel-perfect, but likely after the initial implementation by the programmer, there will be a lot of small changes directed by the graphic designer. By programmer, I mean somebody who is coding the CSS, the HTML, and light backend support, probably in PHP. The programmer will attempt to duplicate the mockups given the limitations of the medium, and consult with the graphic designer afterwards on what changes are tangible and which are not. Both probably have an undergraduate degree from a respected four-year institution.

  Is there a good way to run a C# application on clientside in lieu of JavaScript? I have done some front end work with JavaScript and backend C# for web developing at an old job, but I am interested in hosting a website myself soon. I have a C# application I would like to be open source, but before people care to download I'd like them to be able to use it. At its basic level it's a simple text editor, but there's much more to it in the nitty gritty. I could write it in JavaScript, but it would require me to keep documentation and up to date changes on JavaScript and C# in that case. I was thinking of creating an AJAX panel and somehow loading my winform application into a frame, but I don't know how or what words to google because I've never done it before except AJAX.

• How should I handle using two databases with a legacy PHP application?

  I have a legacy PHP application that was written in 2004 and uses MSSQL as a database backend. At this stage MSSQL is still supported by PHP but only just via a Microsoft driver. I have looked at converting to mysql via automated tools, which work quite well, but I have quite complex views which need a lot of individual work to convert. I don't have a great deal of time to do this. Many tools I wish to use and frameworks I would like to move the application to, don't support MSSQL, so I was considering adding new features using a new mysql database and wondered if anyone had opinions on the pros and cons of using two seperate database backends in a single application?

  I've been looking at Unity 3D for developing a 3D PC game and I really like the scene editor and how it simplifies the process of constructing 3D scenes, managing assets, animations, transitions etc. However, I don't want to restrict myself to using the Unity 3D scripts for handling every bit of game logic in the game. E.g. If I want to construct a RPG dialogue system I don't want to do it with unity 3d scripts - I'd like to use C#/.net. Also, I might want to use e.g. windows azure and sql azure as backend, and use 3rd party .net libraries such as reactive-extensions etc. Is there a .net engine out there that helps me with asset loading, animations, physics, transitions, etc. with a scene editor, but allow me to plug it into a visual studio .net project? • How do I rename a mounted Truecrypt volume?

  When I mount the Truecrypt file on my USB drive it shows up as truecrypt1. The volume is FAT, using mtools to rename a volume label involves e2label /dev/sdbx, however truecrypt1 does not map to a physical partition. fdisk -l does not show the volume partition (only the physical USB device), and df -h lists the volume path as /dev/mapper/truecrypt1. Finally, using the Nautilus 'Rename' context action, gives the error: "Sorry, could not rename "truecrypt1" to "towel": Operation not supported by backend". Apparently this can be done in Win, but how can I rename this volume in Ubuntu? As Nicolas said, specifying the mount point names the partition the same. The truecrypt GUI does not remember the mount point I set, so I specify the mount points in a script which I placed in my main menu. #!/bin/bash gksudo truecrypt /media/usbdrive/encryptedfile /media/securedata/

• How can I give my client "full access" to their PHP application's MySQL database?

  I am building a PHP application for a client and I'm seriously considering WordPress or a simple framework that will allow me to quickly build out features like forums, etc. However, the client is adamant about having "full access" to the database and the ability to "mine the data." Unfortunately, I'm almost certain they will be disappointed when they realize they won't be able to easily glean meaningful insight by looking at serialized fields in wp_usermeta, etc. One thought I had was to replicate a variation on the live database where I flatten out all of those ambiguous and/or serialized fields into something that is then parsable by a mere mortal using a tool as simple as phpMyAdmin. Unfortunately, the client is not going to settle for a simple backend dashboard where I create the custom reports for them even though I know that would be the easiest and most sane approach.

• Ubuntu software center crashes when i try to download anything

  I was trying to set up an old printer by installing several drivers, and I got a problem in software center. I am unable to download anything from it. It opens, but when I try to download something it drops an error message and the installation stops. I can do all the installations from command line, so it is not a major problem, but still will be nice having it again. I reinstall it several times from terminal trying all the solutions I found in the forum, but still the problem is here. Any help is appreciated. • Plug-in or framework recommendation for showing content preview fly-over in CMS

  The requirement is to have either front end plug-in or back end processor that generates the preview of contents (such as images, videos, PDF files, HTML pages) in a preview popup when user mouse hovers the content. I did some research on this, seems that there are assorted jquery plugins for each type of files, but what we are looking for is a framework that handles all types of file previews. Ideally, we want to generate preview images on the backend, considering the cost of retrieving content on front end. I did find some open source or proprietary CMS that provides this feature, but usually they are shipped as one suite and the API for file preview might not be open. Is there any java or jquery framework that handles file preview? Thanks a lot

As an intern I was on the web team doing lots of architecture and developing UI in ExtJS and some Java backend experience. Now as a full time employee I am mainly doing ExtJS applications, which I enjoy a lot, and I want to stay in the web development field, but: Am I limiting my career options with just doing ExtJS stuff? Essentially, there is a global header, and a global footer, and in between is a white expandable div. We'd like our store to fit between the header and footer (and preferably be 960px wide).   A couple of my friends run a business and they asked me to build them a public website. It will only be used for information about the company with soe pictures. No transactions will be involved. Right now I work for a company where I build internal websites, and do alot of backend programming in C#. I understand html, css, jquery, etc. so I feel like I am completely capable of building a website for them. However, I do not know all the basic knowledge to building one. • Whats a good structure to save and retrieve locations of images?

  I got a java-ee application, where I collect informations about movies. Im my backend I provide data like the name, description, genre and a random uuid. I also got lots of related files, which are stored on a file server. Including some screenshots, the dvd or bluRay cover and video trailers. My current approach is: When saving the files to the fileserver, I retrieve the movies random uuid (which is the primary key btw.). I then rename the files screenshot_[UUID]_1, screenshot_[UUID]_2 ... etc. Now, there are lots of other ways to handle this, like saving all filenames in a database or creating a dir structure on the fileserver for every uuid and, e.g., return all images in the "[uuid]/screenshots" folder via REST. I expect about 30k requests a day, so the service has to be pretty performant. Whats the best way to solve this?

  For those who are not aware of Kindle's whispersync, here is how it works (from amazon.com): "...Whispersync synchronizes the bookmarks and furthest page read among devices registered to the same account. Whispersync is on by default to ensure a seamless reading experience for a book read across multiple Kindles." Can anyone give some details on how the Whispersync feature is implemented in Kindle and in the Backend of Amazon? I am guessing this implementation involves a very simple hashmap for each user account. Each hashmap maps Books with satellite information about the book. Satellite information contains bookmarks, furthest page read, device on which it was read, etc.. Thanks!

• Software center crashing in 12.04

  i'm having issues with the Software Center. I'm trying to install Google Chrome, but can't because the software center crashes as soon as it opens. I've looked around at similar topics and found plenty but none of the suggested solutions have worked, so I wonder if this is different. When I type 'software-center' into the terminal, I get the error that other's have had: softwarecenter.backend.reviews - WARNING - Could not get usefulness from server, no username in config file I know this might seem like a duplicate, but none of the solution worked. • replacing kernel on non-booting ec2 instance

  So I had an amazon ec2 instance crash during the update to 14.04LTS. Frustratingly, it appears the kernel might be bad (or at least that's what the log below says to me, I could totally be wrong). I'm able to mount the volume to another, working server, chroot the broken volume, and sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.MOSTRECENT. Unfortunately though, when I try sudo update-grub, it comes back with /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). What am I missing?
