  • How to convert my backup.cmd into something I can run in Linux?

    Back in the day when i was using windows(and a noob at everything IT) i liked batch scripting so much that i wrote a lot of them and one i am pretty proud of that is my backup.cmd(see below). I am pretty basic with the linux bash sudo/apt-get/sl/ls/locate/updatedb/etc... I don't really know the full power of the terminal.   • Solaris 11.1: Encrypted Immutable Zones on (ZFS) Shared Storage

    Solaris 11 brought both ZFS encryption and the Immutable Zones feature and I've talked about the combination in the past.  Solaris 11.1 adds a fully supported method of storing zones in their own ZFS using shared storage so lets update things a little and put all three parts together. When using an iSCSI (or other supported shared storage target) for a Zone we can either let the Zones framework setup the ZFS pool or we can do it manually before hand and tell the Zones framework to use the one we made earlier.  To enable encryption we have to take the second path so that we can setup the pool with encryption before we start to install the zones on it. The zone administrator has no direct access to the ZFS wrapping keys used for the encrypted pool zone is stored on.  Due to how inheritance works in ZFS he can still create new encrypted datasets that use those wrapping keys (without them ever being inside a process in the zone) or he can create encrypted datasets inside the zone that use keys of his own choosing, the output below shows the two cases: rpool is inheriting the key material from the global zone (note we can see the value of the keysource property but we don't use it inside the zone nor does that path need to be (or is) accessible inside the zone).   • Make Apache encode or replace quotes instead of escaping them?

    In the dcoumentation I read Format Notes For security reasons, starting with version 2.0.46, non-printable and other special characters in %r, %i and %o are escaped using \xhh sequences, where hh stands for the hexadecimal representation of the raw byte. Exceptions from this rule are " and \, which are escaped by prepending a backslash, and all whitespace characters, which are written in their C-style notation (\n, \t, etc). In versions prior to 2.0.46, no escaping was performed on these strings so you had to be quite careful when dealing with raw log files. This is a problem for Analog which is still the handiest analyser I use. I get .... "GET /somerequest?q=\"quoted string\"&someparm=bla" in the logfile and it is of course flagged as corrupt since Analog expects .... "GET /somerequest?q=%22quoted string%22&someparm=bla" or similar. I realise I can pre-process using something like perl -p -i.bak -e 's/\\"/%22/g' logfile But I'd rather not have to add this step to these files which are 50-90MB zipped per day Thanks for any pointers

    I've setup AWStats on my VPS to get some more insight into the traffic coming to my site. As instructed I ran a manual build/update which ran fine: sudo -u www-data ./awstats.pl -config=xxxx.com Create/Update database for config "/etc/awstats/awstats.xxxx.com.conf" by AWStats version 6.9 (build 1.925) From data in log file "/usr/share/doc/awstats/examples/logresolvemerge.pl /var/www/xxxx.com/logs/*-access.log |"... Phase 1 : First bypass old records, searching new record... Searching new records from beginning of log file... Phase 2 : Now process new records (Flush history on disk after 20000 hosts)... Warning: awstats has detected that some hosts names were already resolved in your logfile /usr/share/doc/awstats/examples/logresolvemerge.pl /var/www/xxxx.com/logs/*-access.log |. If DNS lookup was already made by the logger (web server), you should change your setup DNSLookup=1 into DNSLookup=0 to increase awstats speed. Jumped lines in file: 0 Parsed lines in file: 814 Found 0 dropped records, Found 0 corrupted records, Found 0 old records, Found 814 new qualified records. It also produced the file in the DatDir: /var/lib/awstats/awstats052010.xxxx.com.txt which contains what I would expect. BUT when I visit: xxxx.com/awstats/awstats.pl it tells me Last Update: Never updated (See 'Build/Update' on awstats_setup.html page) and the rest of the page is blank.     I've been using konsole (KDE 4.2) for a while now but it crashed recently. Konsole is efficiently designed to use one instance for all of the windows for your entire X session. Extra-unfortunately, because of this ingenuity the crash brought down all the humpty-dumptys and their bashes and their bashes' applications and all the begattens' begattens all the way down to Jebodiah Springfield into one big flat nonexistent omelette. The fact that this app is capable of crashing under any circumstances is pretty disappointing. Although KDE 4.2 is not expected to be entirely stable -- and yes, I know, I should update my distro -- it's still a no-sell for me, since if at all possible, this sort of thing Shouldn't Happen to something that's likely to be a foundation for an entire working environment. Maybe this is arrogant and unrealistic, but if it's possible to have something more stable, I want it. So other than running under screen -- which is fun, nifty, and thus far flawless in its reliability, but which has some issues with not understanding certain keycodes -- I'm looking for ways to improve my environment's reliability. The most obvious strategy is to cast about for a more reliable console app. A standard featureset -- which to me includes tabbed windows, Unicode support, and a decent level of keyboard shortcut configuration -- is pretty much essential. I'm currently running gnome-terminal and roxterm, both of which have acceptable featuresets (pretty much identical, actually; I think rox is actually the superset), and neither of which have provided me with extensive, objective reliability data. Not that they were expected to. Other strategies are also welcome. Were I responding to this question I would perhaps suggest backgrounding critical tasks with & and/or disowning them so they don't come down with the global pandemic. And stuff like that.

  • What causes this logrotate behavior in Puppet?

    After running logrotate, Puppet starts writing it's logs into /var/log/puppet/masterhttp.log-20130616. How come it doesn't keep logging in /var/log/puppet/masterhttp.log? It seems normal behavior is renaming the original log-file and start with a clean fresh log-file to start writing in that log file, keeping the other file as a log-archive. Rather than install all of the machines at 8.0.0 and then do the 6 or 7 consecutive reboots adobe expects you to be ok with I decided I'd integrate the .msp files into the installer.   • Rsync: General file/folder synchronization

    I have a file server, which is in-charge of pulling a folder tree from multiple workstations on a daily basis. My current method for this is by using rsync, (which works pretty well provided directory names and/or files remain the same) however, when files are renamed or moved about within subdir1, rsync will copy them over to the server, creating duplicates. I have to manually find and delete extraneous files/folders that had been left on the server during previous syncs. Note that I cannot use rsync's --delete flag because any sync from a workstation will then mirror that particular folder tree, instead of merging them to the server. Visual diagram: Server: Workstation1 Workstation2 Workstation(n) Folder* Folder* Folder* Folder* -subdir1 -subdir1 -subdir1 -subdir(n) -file1 -file1 -file2 -file(n) -file2 -file(n) Is there a simple script (preferably in bash, nothing fancy) that can accomplish the deletion of the extraneous files/folders in the event a file is renamed or moved to a different subdir? Is there a different program, much like rsync that can accomplish this task autonomously and in a much simpler manner? I have looked at unison, but I did not like the fact that it keeps a local database for the syncing info. Any tips at all as to how I am supposed to tackle this? Thank you in advanced for your help. EDIT: I have tried unison just recently and I can safely say it is out of the question now. unison is a bi-directional synchronization tool and from my testing, it mirrors the files existing on the server to all workstations. - This is unwanted. preferably, i would want files/folders to stay within their respective workstations and just merge to the server. AKA uni-directional sync; but with renames/moves propagated to the server. I might have to look into Git/Mercurial/Bazaar as mentioned by kyle, but still unsure if they are fit for the job.

If I upload a folder full of images.. or music.. basically personal stuff to my website and name it 'junk1234' can other people find it? Or even search engines? If so, How would I restrict any but those who know the folder name from seeing files in it? Possibly httaccess files? I also have cpanel installed.

  • Exchange 2010: Find Move Request Log after move request completes

    EDIT: significantly changed my question here to streamline it a bit. I've gone ahead and used 100 as my corrupted item count and ran it from the Exchange Shell. So the trail of tears continues with my SBS 2003 to 2011 migration: all the mailboxes have moved mailbox store from OLDSERVER to NEWSERVER, with the Local Move Requests completing successfully, except for one. What I'd like to do now is review the previous move request log files: when they were in progress, I could right-click Properties Log View Log File, but now that they're completed, that's not available. Nor can I use: Get-MoveRequestStatistics <user> -includereport | fl MoveReport ...as the move request has now completed and it errors out with "couldn't find a move request that corresponds...". Basically what I'd like to do is present the list of baditems to the user so that they're aware of what items didn't come across and if anything important was lost, be able to check their current OST, an archive.pst, etc. to recover it if possible. If this all needs to be wrapped up in a batch Exchange power shell command to pipe the output to log files on disk somewhere, I'm all ears, and would appreciate it for the next migration we do.

  • General video performance affected on Mac OSX 10.5 (PowerBook G4)

    Hi all, I'm quite new to Mac and I just got a PowerBook G4 for free. I installed OSX 10.5 on it and for the first two weeks, everything was going kinda smooth even if this is similar to a P3. I'm not expecting awsome video performance but at least be able to watch some videos from Youtube. Yesterday night, I installed Office 2008 for mac and this morning, even after a reboot, my computer is way much slower that I used to know. I watched a youtube video and the framerate was 1:1. I also noticed it on flash adds, it's way slower! Is there anything that I can do to increase video performance, see what's the process list running and taking more GPU or CPU, what's taking more ram and stuff like that?! What do you guys, Mac pros, would do on an old laptop with OSX 10.5 Thanks!
