• Ubuntu 12.04 crashing

  We have a server with 2x32gb sas raid 1 and 4x1tb raid 10 + 2x1tb hot spares. Whenever we try to copy the 1tb and 1.5e6 files to a backup location (even just using tty1 cp command) it fails. We have tried using backintime and dejadup, and resorted to a manual cp to an external usb2 HDD. When that failed, we tried installing an internal HDD on the mobo (not on raid) and another cp, which also fails. The failures lock up the system and we are left with an unfortunate hard reboot situation. After reboot, syslog tends to be empty (only containing newly booted data) and we haven't a clue where to start. It has been 3 weeks since our last successful backup and we are getting nervous... -using 3ware raid controller, 8gb ram and nvidia pciexpress graphics with a gigabyte mobo and xeon 4-core processor.

• HP 6735s Brightness hotkey problem; where is brightness panel?

  I have installed ubuntu 11.10 on my laptop hp 6735s. The screen is often too dark and i want to make it brighter, although the hotkeys Fn+F7/F8 are not working. I have tried some things: Firstly it appears that sometimes they are in fact working, after reboot they either work and continue to do so or they don't. I've read about a brightness applet; but where can i find or install it? I have tried some grub options; acpi_osi=Linux and acpi_backlight=vendor but nothing changes. I don't want to add another question but since it might be related: my laptop also gets quite hot, i'm having doubts whether ubuntu connects to the available sensors and cooling plans (or how does it work???); sensors (or psensor) only shows 2 sensors both named temp1. Any help is greatly appreciated! Paul

• How can I get my meshes to work with Bullet Physics?

  The problem is that I'm trying to use my meshes with Bullet Physics for the collision part of my game. When I attempted doing this method with my GLM(model loading library by nate robins) model, I get a segmentation fault in the debug, so I figured that it doesnt like the coordinate variables of the model. If i use blender to export my model as a collision file, what type of file should I use? I have heard of a .bullet exporter, but i dont know hot to integrate this python script into my Blender 2.5 program.

• Booting 11.10 from USB stick on MacBook Pro 5,1 fails

  I've created a bootable memory stick on a Windows computer, and tested it on an HP PC. It's made from a 64-bit image of Ubuntu 11.10, downloaded from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download. When I boot from this memory stick, there is some kind of boot menu, where I can choose to run Ubuntu from the memory stick, or install. I select Run from memory stick. (the words may be wrong here, I'm taking it from memory.) From this point, the screen is black (but backlighted), and I can't do anything but turn off the computer. It gets hot, too. Has anyone been more successful than me? Are there known issues? The computer is a 15 inch MacBook Pro 5,1 (unibody, late 2008), 4 GB memory.

I'm going to create a data feed with this info which will be input to another app. I have Apache logs, and complete control of the machine to install what I want. This is when you realise that you've just travelled home with your laptop enclosed in its carry case without it properly powering down. • cpu temperature imrpoves very fast

  Last few days i found out that when i click google chrome and the open it my laptop starts being angry.That's fans are working hardly and i can not touch the mousepad because of heating.I use Ubuntu 11.10 on my Toshiba A350-22z laptop and monitor cpu and harddrive temperature.Both cores reached 104 Celcius and i read somewhere "if your processor reaches 105Celcius it harms itself".I cleaned inside of laptop a year ago but there is a point : until wheather becomes about 20Celcius there was no problem.I know hardware cleaning is the best solution but how can i solve with another way ? I think problem is about outside's hot wheather.Is there anybody that has the same problem.In addition to Google Chrome i realized that when i open online video the processor temperature increas very fast.

• Ideal laptop specs for a Computer Science Masters student? [closed]

  I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated.   I am a software developer(sharepoint developer) with total 3 years of experience.Though using out of the box sharepoint excites me, i have aversion to code. i kinda cant put my brains in coding. i have my eyes on MBA now(only reason is to get rid of code). I wanted to rethink on this and need your expert advice and suggestions. As i am working currently in a hot skill(sharepoint 2013) technology, is it a good thought to go ahead and do MBA and change my career, or should i start liking what i do?? This is a change in venue from last year as DeVry is in the middle of a major remodling project. We has almost 450 last year, and we expect to have over 500 this year with great speakers such as Andy Warren, Herve Roggero, and more! As always, we our goal is to feed you well, so we are shooting for some hot lunch food this year. We are working on that now and will update you as soon as we firm it up. One of the things we will be trying this year is 90-100 minute sessions on a couple of tracks. We strongly feel that several topics are just getting warmed up in 45 minutes, so we are going to experiment with 90-100 minute sessions on some of the BI topics. We would love to see you there!

• High temperature on my laptop with Radeon Mobility HD4670

  As almost everyone here, I guess, in these days I downloaded Quantal Quetzal to give it a try. However I noticed that my laptop runs fairly hot with cooling fans almost always on, even sitting in the desktop doing nothing. I downloaded XSensor to read temperature sensors, and I saw that while CPU stays on about 65°C, so quiet normal I guess, the GPU sits at 75°C. In comparison my actual Windows 7 installation, which dual boots witb Quantal, stays at 59°C CPU and 65°C. So I went reading and learned that AMD dropped support for my video card from fglrx package, and that fglrx-legacy won't support 1.13 Xorg, so I'm basically stuck with OSS drivers. So I was guessing if there's anything I can try, and if it's possible that the OSS drivers could be the cause of the high temperature?

• HELP: I Broke Ubuntu By Uninstalling Compiz

  I'm still getting used to Linux, having come from Windows. I was receiving an error that "compiz" had crashed a few times so I figured I'd uninstall it. sudo apt-get remove compiz sudo apt-get install compiz I logged out then back in, after that, the GUI was totally gone and I have no idea how to get it back or what I need to do to restore the GUI to what it was before I killed poor Compiz. GUI was pretty much unmodified after a fresh install of 14.04 How can I fix it? I'm not even sure how to get to a terminal or anything. The login screen looks normal, but after logging in, it's a totally bare desktop with my backround and a few icons. No Dash, toolbar, etc. Hot Keys don't seem to work either (Super = Dash doesn't work, etc); although I did accidently open "Disk" UI. Not sure how. Please Help! Right now I'm working off my W7 dualboot.

• PCI hotplug doesn't seem to work

  In virsh I detach a PCI bus from host and attach it to a VM. I don't see any errors in these steps. But I don't see the PCI device listed in the VM. virsh # nodedev-dettach pci_0000_01_00_0 Device pci_0000_01_00_0 dettached virsh # attach-device VM1 pci_add.xml Device attached successfully $ cat pci_add.xml <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'> <source> <address domain='0x000' bus='0x01' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/> </source> </hostdev> Is PCI hot plug not supported? I am using Ubuntu 12.04.3(kernel 3.8.0-34). I can add the same PCI device through virsh edit VM1 and start the VM1. This way I am able to see the device.

• What command are my volume keys running?

  In Unity I use my ThinkPad hot keys to change the volume. I need to know the command that these keys run so that I can bind it in my window manager. I have tried using amixer but could not change the volume through command line amixer set Master 10%- amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Master',0 amixer scontrols: Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0 amixer set 'IEC958' 50%- amixer: Invalid command! So obviously this is not what Unity is running. I have tried changing the default sound card as well but that didn't help.

• KeyTouch remaps the delete key

  I installed KeyTouch, but it decided that the delete key should be the KeyTouch hot key. So, when I pressed deleted, KeyTouch came up. Next I uninstalled KeyTouch and now the delete key doesn't do anything. Is there any way to remap the delete key to actually delete? Notes: I tried reinstalling KeyTouch, and the same thing happens. KeyTouch does not allow the user to map the delete key. EDIT xev shows keycode 119 when I press the delete key xmodmap shows keycode 119 mapped to Delete NoSymbol Delete running xmodmap -e "keycode 119 = Delete" from the command line does not resolve the issue
