• How to get Tomcat Working on WIndows 7?

  I have installed Apache Tomcat 5.X/6.X on my Winodws 7 PC. After the installaiton the service starts fine when I check the Start Tomcat box and click finish. However If I try to start the tomcat configuration tool or monitor tool from the start menu I can not start any of the Tomcat's services. I get an error in a message box stating "Access Deined. Unable to open Tomcat 5.5". What seems to be the problem? and How can I solve it? Even restarting the PC won't help. I also have JDK and JRE installed. Turing the firewall doesn't work too. Please Help! Note that I'm running 32bit Version of Windows 7.

• Cannot run/debug Java applications in Eclipse (JavaTimeZone issue)

  I'm trying to get started with Eclipse/Java/Scala on a MacBook. The installed JDK was 1.5. The SDT plugin for Scala requires 1.6 which was included in an OS update, but I also manually installed a package from Apple to update 1.6. The problem is that I cannot run anything from Eclipse. I always get the following error: An internal error occurred during: "Launching TestFooBasicTest". Could not initialize class com.ibm.icu.impl.JavaTimeZone I also tried to use the old 1.5 version, but to no avail. What is going wrong here?

It uses restricted APIs, so I obtained a key from RIM and applied it via the Java Development Environment. When I attempt to run on my phone (BB Curve, 8520. OS: 4.6.1), it shows an error saying "'ConstituentC' attempts to access a secure API." • Is there a way to load a different cacerts than the one specified in the java_home/jre/lib/security

  I have a single installation of java in a system that runs 2 or 3 applications. All the applications use the same runtime. Is there a way to specify a different keystores for the ca certs than the one in java_home/jre/lib/security. That is, is there an option to specify an "extra" keystore that is loaded and added to the certs loaded from java_home/jre/lib/security/cacerts? What I want to avoid is having to re-import our local ca every time I upgrade the jdk in the box.

  We are planning to upgrade our Tomcat from 4.1.31. Our's is an Axis 1.4 application where we have our web services. Request you to suggest the latest stable version of Tomcat 5 or Tomcat 6 suitable for our application. And the things to consider while upgrading. Will the existing 1.4 Java code base works smoothly on Tomcat 5 or 6? And going further we may write the code in JDK 1.5 as well. • JNI_CreateJavaVM: Buffer overrun if I throw an exception in case of failure

  Hi, In a C++ project, I use the JNI invocation API to launch a JVM. I've done a little wrapper arount the JVM so I can use all the needed parts in a OO fashion. So far that works great. Now, if the JVM does not start (JNI_CreateJavaVM returns a value < 0) I'd like to raise an exception within my C++ code.But if I throw an exception after JNI_CreateJavaVM, I get a buffer overrun. If I raise the exception without the JNI_CreateJavaVM call, it works as expected. Does anyone have a clue on what the issue could be here? Or how to debug this? Environment: Windows, Visual Studio 2008 JDK: jrockit27.6jdk16005, but happens with SUN stock one as well Cheers Dominik

  I have an ArrayList a collection class of java as follows. ArrayList<String>animals = new ArrayList<String>(); animals.add("bat"); animals.add("owl"); animals.add("bat"); animals.add("bat"); As you can see the animals ArrayList consists of 3 bat elements and one owl element. I was wondering if there is any API in collection framework that returns the number of bat occurrences or is there a way to determine number of occurrences. I found that google's collection multiset does have an api that returns total number of occurrences of an element. But that is compatible only with jdk1.5. Our product is currently in jdk 1.6. Hence cannot use it.

I want to make all my maven packages to compile with jdk 1.6, and I can't find a good way to do it without manually setting it on every single POMs - I'm sick of copy-and-pasting <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-compiler-plugin</artifactId> <configuration> <source>1.6</source> <target>1.6</target> </configuration> in every single pom.xml file I generate. Is there a simpler way to resolve this issue?

• Metro + Jetty + OSGi = pain

  I am trying to swap out Sun's HTTPServer for the much better Jetty server, within an OSGi bundle, running on Equinox. I have tried this: System.setProperty("com.sun.net.httpserver.HttpServerProvider","org.mortbay.jetty.j2se6.JettyHttpServerProvider"); but when endpoint.publish(url) is called, and the server is spawned, it complains of a ClassNotFoundException for org.mortbay.jetty.j2se6.JettyHttpServerProvider. However, the correct jars are in the bundle, and indeed in the Activator I can instantiate a org.mortbay.jetty.j2se6.JettyHttpServerProvider. I think that this is a some kind of classpath issue - the spawned server is in a different classpath maybe? I have tried adding the JARs in at the JDK level, but this doesn't make any difference. Can oanyone shed any light how on earth to get this working? P.S. Maybe hideous System.setProperty calls will vanish from the world one day. Hopefully :)

  I followed the Maven tutorial to the letter but I still can't get Maven installed. When I run the following in command prompt: E:\Documents and Settings\zach>mvn --version I get: 'mvn' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I navigated to the maven install folder and ran mvn --version and got: E:\java resources\apache-maven-2.2.0\bin>mvn --version ERROR: JAVA_HOME is set to an invalid directory. JAVA_HOME = "E:\Sun\SDK\jdk\bin" Please set the JAVA_HOME variable in your environment to match the location of your Java installation but when I run java -version I get: java version "1.6.0_14" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode) So I do have Java installed. Anyone know what the problem is?

• Netbeans 7.2 won't open on OS X

  I installed Netbeans on OSX Mountain Lion running JDK 7. Everything was working fine. Then my machine for no reason crashed. After this I could no longer open Netbeans anymore. If I try to start Netbeans from the commandline: /Applications/NetBeans/NetBeans 7.2.app/Contents/MacOS/netbeans Then it works fine. From there I can select Netbeans About and confirm that my userdir and cachedir is: User directory: /Users/<user>/Library/Application Support/NetBeans/7.2 Cache directory: /Users/<user>/Library/Caches/NetBeans/7.2 So, I deleted these directories and tried again, but alas, I can only start netbeans via the commandline. Ideas appreciated...

  Yes/no-question: Is there a Groovy GDK function to capitalize the first character of a string? I'm looking for a Groovy equivalent of Perl's ucfirst(..) or Apache Commons StringUtils.capitalize(str) (the latter capitalizes the first letter of all words in the input string). I'm currently coding this by hand using .. str = str[0].toUpperCase() + str[1 .. str.size() - 1] .. which works, but I assume there is a more Groovy way to do it. I'd imagine ucfirst(..) being a more common operation than say center(..) which is a standard method in the Groovy GDK (see http://groovy.codehaus.org/groovy-jdk/java/lang/String.html).

  Hello! This is a simple question, but I didn´t found any documentation about this. When an applet makes a request, how is the user agent of the request. I want to know the applet user-agent expression to detect if a request comes from an applet. I make two test, with IE7 and Firefox 3.0.5 with JDK 1.6.0_03 and the user agent was "Mozilla/4.0 (Windows 2003 5.2) Java/1.6.0_03" in both, but I can´t generalize from two test. I'm looking for features like configurable at runtime policies updateable at runtime, read from other data sources than a security.policy file Thread-aware, e.g. different policies per Thread Higher-level policies, e.g. "Disable network functions, but allow JDBC traffic" Common predefined policies, e.g. "Allow read-access to usual system properties like file.encoding or line.separator, but disallow read-access to user.home" Monitoring and audit trace logging, e.g. "Log all file access, log all network access going NOT to knownhost.example.org" Blocking jobs "requesting" a permission until an administrator grants permission, letting the thread/job continue ... I'm pretty sure that application servers (at least the commercial ones) have their own SecurityManager implementation or at least their own policy configuration. I'm wondering if there is any free project with similar requirements.

• ant - trying to copy to /lib/endorsed, library is not available in windows 7 to the next task

  On Windows 7 I have an ant target that copies a xalan library into the jdk endorsed directory so that the next xslt transformation task can occur. The first time that the ant target runs, the xslt transformation fails. The second time it runs the jar file is already in the correct place and the xslt tranformation succeeds. The first time that the ant target runs, it looks like the file copied successfully. It feels like a timing issue, but I don't know what I can do to get around it. Here is my copy task: <mkdir dir="${java.home}\lib\endorsed"/> <copy file="${basedir}\xalan.jar" tofile="${java.home}\lib\endorsed\xalan.jar"/> Has anyone seen anything like this before?

• Java: Selected rows's index does not changes when I sort them!

  Hello, I have a Jtable on which I called the method table1.setAutoCreateRowSorter(true);. So this works on well. But I also have a methos in my JFrame class which is fired when i push a button. It gets the selected rows indexes using this code int selectedRows[] = this.table1.getSelectedRows();. And displays an edit window for the first row corresponding in the selected interval. The problem is that if I don't click on column's headers (I mean i don't sorte them at all) my method works perfect. But when I sort the row, the indexes of the rows doesn't seems to change at all - thus resulting an edit window for the old row whicn was initially in that position before making any sort. I am using JDK 6 could anyonw give ma a tip?

• Why's a simple change to rt.jar causing the Java Runtime Environment to crash silently?

  This is what I'm doing: extract contents of my JRE's rt.jar extract src.zip of my JDK (same version) Now, if I copy Runtime.java from the extracted src folder and compile it using javac.exe without any modifications and then put it in the extracted rt folder to finally put everything back in a jar file using jar.exe, everything works as expected. The JRE runs fine. However, if I make the slightest change to Runtime.java and compile it and put it in rt.jar, the JRE crashes whenever I attempt to start it. This is an example of a slight change that causes the silent crash: /** Don't let anyone else instantiate this class */ private Runtime() { System.out.println("This is a test."); } Instead of: /** Don't let anyone else instantiate this class */ private Runtime() {} Could anyone tell me why this is causing my JRE to crash? Thanks in advance.
