• C# console applications all 16bit?

  Hi all, I was reading up about NTVDM.exe as I build a quick test console app and it crashed on a friends machine complaining about this EXE. As I understand it all DOS cmd windows (C# console apps included) run as 16bit not 32bit. Is this true? Does this mean all my works console app back office apps are running as 16bit rather than making the most of the 32bit available? What about Windows services? As I believe we wrote it as a console app then made it run as a windows service? Thanks

• Trying to execute netdom.exe from a ruby script or IRB does nothing

  I'm trying to write a script that will rename a computer and join it to a domain, and was planning to call on netdom.exe to do the dirty work. However, trying to run this utility in the script (same results in irb) does absolutely nothing. No output, no execution. I tried with backticks and with the system() method. System() returns false for everything but system("netdom") (which returns true). Backticks never return anything but an empty string. I have verified that netdom runs and works in the environment the script will be running in, and I'm calling other command-line utilities earlier in the script that work (w32tm, getmac, ping). Here's the exact line that gets executed: `netdom renamecomputer %COMPUTERNAME% /NewName:#{newname} /force` FYI, This is windows 7 x64

• installing windows service with SC.exe or InstallUtil.exe - there is difference but which?

  hejdig. SC.exe and InstallUtil both install/uninstall windows services. But they don't seem to work the same way. What is the difference? For instance InstallUtil fails (some file or dependency not found error) while Sc create happily installs the service. Too add to the strangeness; the service doesn't show up if I run net start in the console. But it does show up in the services GUI. Variants of this happen when I try to uninstall. I have written the service myself and earlier versions work. Dotnet3.5. /OF

• DDE Server Windows:orcascr9.exe: Application Error

  Hello I've looked at the queries on SO that pertain to similar errors - but haven't found anything so far, to help with this particular problem I am having with an orcascript which I am running under Powerbuilder9.0. The orca script connects to an SCC service provider, does a full target refresh, and then is supposed to build the exe. It never gets to the last step though. The log is not very informative and simply says this at the point of failure: PBORCA_SccRefreshTarget. Full Rebuild Calling cm_rebuild_application(CM_REBUILD_FULL) While the script is at some way into this above step, it exits and throws up the DDE server error. Can someone help me figure this one out? I just barely know the basics of PB, and the intent of this exercise is to convert an IDE-based build that I inherited, into an orcascript build so that i can run the build unmonitored. • Eclipse Project Files to .exe or Runnable Jar

  I am able to create the runnable jar using the export feature. However, it does not behave like it does in eclipse. When my program first starts, launch settings are displayed. I can see this. However, when I want to actually launch the meat of the program, it doesn't show up. It seems to not look at all my class files or something. I have tried Far Jar but that didn't work... I have triend JSmooth but still just ran the one frame If I can make this a runnable jar that works or even a .exe, that would be great!

• #include <string> adding ~43 KB to my exe

  I'm using Code::Blocks to write my program and when I include <string> (or <iostream>) the size of my exe grows. My program is very simple and I need to keep it small <20kb. I'm pretty sure this is happening because of the C++ Standards Committee swapped the old .h versions for many new libraries without the .h. But how would I keep it from adding the ~43kb? Are there settings for Code::Blocks so that it wont add the extra kb or is there another native lib I can use?

• Cygwin GCC + WinXP cmd.exe does nothing

  My basic problem is that if I run GCC from the windows command line (cmd.exe in Windows XP) and it does nothing: no .o files are created, no error messages, nothing. It will only throw an error message if I use DOS-style paths, but nothing else. When I run from the Cygwin shell then it will throws error messages as appropriate for the errors in the source and produces the .o files as it needs. Using 'make' from the DOS command line doesn't work either. Has anyone encountered this behavior before?

• Open an Application .exe window inside another application

  I have an application in WPF running. I would like that, when a button is clicked inside this application, another application opens, with its window maximized. However, I don't want my first application to stop and wait. I want both to be open and running independently. When the button is clicked again, in case the application is minimized, the application is maximized. In case it is not, it is open again. How is it possible using C#? I have tried the following: Process process = Process.GetProcesses().FirstOrDefault(f => f.ProcessName.Contains("Analysis")); ShowWindow((process ?? • Is there a way to password protect a windows application on Windows 7 without changing the exe?

  I want to password-protect a few applications (not just files/folders) on Windows 7, such that, there is no change to the protected application's .exe file itself. Since the .exe files can't be changed, "Empathy" and "Protect Exe" can't be used as they change the .exe file. I tried using WinGuard Pro and LockThis! also but they don't work for Microsoft Outlook and some other apps (that I need). Is it possible at all? Please help.

• Obtaining information about executable code from exe/pdb

  Hello, I need to extract code (but not data!) from classic win32 exe/dll files. It's clear I can't do this only with extraction of code segment content (because code segment contains also the data -- jump tables for example) and that I need some help from compiler. *.map files are nice but they only contain addresses of functions, i.e. the safest thing I can do is to start at that address and to process until the first return / jump instruction (because part of the function could be mentioned data) *.pdb files are better but I'm not sure what tools to use to extract information like this -- I took a look at DbgHelp and DIA SDK, the latter one seems to be the right tool but it doesn't look very simple. So my question/questions: To your knowledge, it is possible to extract information about code/data position (address + length) only via DbgHelp? If the DIA SDK is the only way, any idea what should I call for getting information like that? (that COM stuff is pretty heavy) Is there any other way? Of course my concern is about Visual Studio, C/C++ source compilation in the first place. Thanks for any hint.

• xsd.exe - schema to class - for use with WCF

  I have created a schema as an agreed upon interface between our company and an external company. I am now creating a WCF C# web service to handle the interface. I ran the XSD utility and it created a C# class. The schema was built in BizTalk, and references other schemas, so all-in-all there are over 15 classes being generated. I put [DataContract} attribute in front of each of the classes. Do I have to put the [DataMember] attribute on every single property? When I generate a test client program, the proxy does not have any code for any of these 15 classes. We used to use this technique when using .asmx services, but not sure if it will work the same with WCF. If we change the schema, we would want to regenerate the WCF class, and then we would haev to each time redecorate it with all the [DataMember] attributes? Is there an newer tool similar to XSD.exe that will work better with WCF? • Retrieve COM ProgID from exe without registering it

  Background: I would like to extract the COM data from a VB6 application so I can register it correctly (according to Microsoft best practice) the application. I am using WiX 3.0 and heat.exe will not extract the data (known issue with heat) and I do not have ready access to the associated TLB file. The VB6 application does not have compatibility turned on so it regenerates the COM GUIDs every build (They want to have the application be able to run side by side with an older version.) I created a C# application that will collect the TypeLib, interface and CoClass information from the VB6 application without registering it and create a wxs file for candle to use. My company has several other older applications like this and I would like to make it a more generic solution. The Issues: 1.Is there a way to collect the 'true' ProgID (programmer intended one) from the application with out the project or TLB file and without registering it? 2.Is there a way to find out the intended Threading Model from a DLL without registering it? (I intend that it can handle all COM active items, might as well be complete) Thank you.

  I have installed a fresh copy of windows xp 2002 with SP2, and then VS.net 2008 enterprise edition. I am trying to build a simplest possible web application, and its not compiling giving error csc.exe not found. But System.Linq and all classes present in it are accessible in the code. Please help in this weird behavior.

If I print the argc argument, it's 14 for the second instance of runner.exe, and they are all weird stuff like Files\Microsoft, SQL, Files\Common and so on. I can't figure out why this happens. I want to be able to string as many runner.exe calls using command line arguments as possible, or at least 2. How can I do that? I am using Windows 7 if that makes a difference.

Now I want this process to be done using a progress bar (so when the download progress is at 50% the progress bar is half-way through). • Loading .dll/.exe from file into temporary AppDomain throws Exception

  Hi Gang, I am trying to make a Visual Studio AddIn that removes unused references from the projects in the current solution (I know this can be done, Resharper does it, but my client doesn't want to pay for 300 licences). Anyhoo, I use DTE to loop through the projects, compile their assemblies, then reflect over those assemblies to get their referenced assemblies and cross-examine the .csproj file. Problem: since the .dll/.exe I loaded up with Reflection doesn't unload until the app domian unloads, it is now locked and the projects can't be built again because VS tries to re-create the files (all standard stuff). I have tried creating temporary files, then reflecting over them...no worky, still have locked original files (I totally don’t understand that BTW). Now I am now going down the path of creating a temporary AppDomain to load the files into and then destroy. I am having problems loading the files though: The way I understand AddDomain.Load is that I should create and send a byte array of the assembly to it. • Can I specify the files to commit in subversion in a file rather than on the command line?

  I have renamed (with svn move) a lot of files in a subversion project. Now, I am trying to commit these on Window's cmd.exe. It seems that I hit a limit (probably by cmd.exe) in that the number of files is too long for the command line to swallow. Now, I thought and hoped that I could list the files to commit in a seperate file that I could specify with the commit command (something like svn ci --files-to-commit=renamed-files.txt -m "Renamed a lot of files" Yet, either such an option does not exist or I am unable to find this. Unfortunately, I cannot do a svn ci . as I have done other changes in the project as well. Neither can I do a svn ci *pattern-of-renamed-files* since this would only check in the added files, not the deleted ones. Before I start checking in the files with smaller chunks of files to check in (and thus increase the revision number uneccesserily without giving a hint as to the 'atomicity' of the operation) I thought I ask if this is indeed impossible to do.

• Unable to execute file in the temporary directory

  I am using Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit. I see this error, almost everytime I launch an executable file (to install it) but not for all of them. I don't see the error when I use Run as Administrator. I looked around, and found a solution: I needed to give permissions to the current user for the temp file as shown in the picture below: The problem here is solved temporarily, but it goes back to give me the same problem after restarting the PC. What can I do to prevent such a thing? I don't really want to use the built in Administrator account all the time. Update: The problem is caused by the cracked version of Adobe Acrobat. I'm using this command to automate environment variable value appending multiple times during the same process. Why doesn't environment variable get updated in cmd without restart? Is it possible to get the updated value of %SOMEVARIABLE% without restarting the command prompt?

  I am using the robocopy command to create a backup system, I have successfully managed to copy the folders, but the date stamp is wrong. The folders are prefixed with the date and time . The robocopy command is this: robocopy U:\Data\ X:\Private\Backups\FolderName_%date:/=-%-(%time::=-%) /e The out of the folder is displayed like this: FolderName_09-11-2013-(20-24-06.60) The only thing I want to change is the date, I want to show the month as a string with only the first 3 characters like Oct. Can someone please guide me. Thanks.

• Hebrew (utf8) characters in windows cmd console

  I previously asked this Q: utf8 hebrew on mysql console on debian (via putty on windows) And managed to get it working by starting mysql with --default-character-set=utf8 and setting putty to show utf8 as well. Now I need to do the same but on a windows server. The data is again the same but when I start mysql with --default-character-set=utf8 it I see multuple characters where I am supposed to see hebrew. I think the problem is with the set up of windows cmd console that it does not properly display utf8. any ideas ?
