• Change form field options dynamically (and restore previously selected options) using jQuery

  I'm fairly new to both jQuery and JavaScript so can anyone please point out what I'm missing here? I have a form with multiple pairs of select fields, where the content of the second field relies on the selection of the first one. Once a value is chosen from the first one then a piece of jQuery code empties the corresponding second select options, gets new values as JSON and inserts them as new select values. All of this works with the code I've written. However if a user has chosen a second value, I'd like to restore it if possible (meaning if the new values also include the one previously selected). I tried to do this by first saving the second value and then trying to set it once the new options have been inserted. This did not work. However when trying to debug I inserted an alert() just before restoring the second value and with that in there it does work... Am I missing something very basic here? Any help would be appreciated. The first thing to note is that a user can record multiple playings of the same scenario (scenid) on the same date (playdate) possibly with the same outcome (side = winner). Hence the need for the unique ID and timestamps for good measure. I appear to have painted myself into a corner. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get some unique identifying data (ID and/or timestamp) to ride along on this form without showing it to the user? PHP-only please, I must be NoScript compliant!

• How do I show the selected item in an HTML <select> at the top

  I have an HTML select that looks something like this (values are fake) <select size="40"> <option value="1">What would you do if I sang out of tune,</option> <option value="2">Would you stand up and walk out on me?</option> ... more <option value="156">Lend me your ears, and I'll sing you a song,</option> <option selected="selected" value="157">I will try not to sing out of key.</option> <option value="158">Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends.</option> ... more <option value="507">I get high with a little help from my friends.</option> <option value="509">Gonna' try with a little from my friends.</option> </select> The problem that I have is that when displaying the list after loading the page and the selected option is in the middle of the very long list, IE scrolls the selected option to the top of the list (which is what I want). Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Safari show it at the bottom (which I don't want). I have to assume that IE is doing it wrong since everyone else shows it at the bottom. How can I force the browsers to display the selected item at the top of the list. I do not want to put it at the top of the list, I just want it to scroll such that the selected option is at the top. bonus, it would be even better if I can put it fourth from the top, but I can live without that if it's too difficult.

• How can I set my screen resolution to match my TV?

  I have a computer in my classroom that's connected to an LG smart TV (that's actually not so smart. I wouldn't recommend buying one.). For the touch interface, the TV wants a resolution of 1920x1080 at 60Hz. However, I can't seem to set the computer to that resolution. The display settings only offer 1024x768 and 640x480. The computer dual boots with Windows XP, where widescreen options are available in approximately the required size, but the exact resolution -- or even aspect ratio-- isn't available in XP either. I tried the following command: xrandr -s 1920x1080 -r 60 The response was: Size 1920x1080 not found in available modes Back in the old days, the solution would be to edit xorg.conf. However, since that file no longer exists, and I haven't found up-to-date info, I don't know what else to do. If it helps, this machine will never be connected to a different display, so resolution flexibility isn't important.   I formatted all the partitions in my computer to a single ext4 partition and did a fresh installation of Ubuntu 13.04. I'm getting: Failed to execute /init Kernel panic - not syncing: no init found. Try passing init=option to kernel. Even on clean reinstall the issue persist. Booting from recovery mode leads to same error, so not able to reach the terminal. But able to boot from Live CD. Any help much appreciated.

• Bridging: Loosing WLAN network connection with 4addr on option - Why?

  Question: For use with my Xen VM, I need to create a virtual network interface (vif) that is bridged to wlan0. If in /etc/network/interfaces I add auto xenbr0 iface xenbr0 inet dhcp And then later do brctl addif xenbr0 wlan0 I get this error message. can't add wlan0 to bridge xenbr0: Operation not supported I found out that Linux won't let you bridge a wireless interface in managed mode at all unless you enable the 4addr option (needed to recompile iw): iw dev wlan0 set 4addr on Afterwards brctl addif xenbr0 wlan0 works, and brctl show shows xenbr0 as bridged to wlan0. Unfortunately, as soon as I execute iw dev wlan0 set 4addr on my entire network connection is gone (no connection). As soon as then I execute iw dev wlan0 set 4addr off I reconnect and it works again. If I re-execute 4addr on, it breaks again, if I execute 4addr off, it works again. Unfortunately, I can't just turn 4addr on, activate the bridge and then turn it back off (error: device not ready). Does anybody know why I loose my connection ?

They're currently using Wordpress and I've been trying to decide what web framework to push them towards, since I'll have to learn that language and implement it as well. Is ASP.Net MVC a realistic option for a web based startup company with little financial backing? For example, I know in the Rails hosting is slightly cheaper because of the whole free OS thing and there are free "gems" available to do things like a mailers, but how much more expensive can it get if I go with ASP.Net MVC since such add-ons stop being open source? How much does the cost of hosting for .NET applications add to the equation?

• I'm getting a black screen right after Install Ubuntu option on GRUB menu. Any ideas?

  I've formatted my USB and remade the live USB twice. I tried editing editing the commands (pressing the 'e' key while the command was highlighted on the GRUB menu) by 1. deleting quiet splash and replacing it with nomodeset 2. adding nomodeset right before quiet splash 3. deleting quiet splash and adding radeon.modeset=0 I saw another solution for a fix by editing GRUB but in command line 'sudo' 'nano' and 'update-grub' all show up as unknown commands. I'm brand new to Ubuntu, in case you couldn't tell. I would appreciate any help you could give me. I want to convince my brother that Ubuntu is a better option than iOS but I can't do that if I can't install it. If you need more information, please ask. I'm not dual booting. I want this to be a full install. Thanks.

However, we will start with one language and with small idea then we are going to improve it and make it larger! What do you think the best tools and language that we should use? We are caring alot about the speed of loading the pages and tools that provide excellent qulaity with cheaper fees. Edit: We are graphic designers, so we did not choose the programming language yet. But we studied computer science and we have an idea but we found that this is the best place to ask the question and expect the right answer from you. Should we use ASP.NET for example? or PHP? We do not want an expesive option that will cost us alot in the future and we do not want to change the technology at least for the first 5 years. Thanks!
