  • Ruby on Rails / PostgreSQL - Library not Loaded error when starting server- libq.5.dylib

    I have app that is running Ruby 1.9.2, Rails 3, and postgreSQL 8.3. It was originally setup and working with postgreSQL 9.1, but I uninstalled 9.1 and installed and changed to 8.3 insure compatibility on a Heroku shared database setup. It was running ok, but it's not now Now, when working on this app, when I run a database upgrade I get this error: dlopen(/Users/michaeljmccoy/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p290/gems/pg-0.12.2/lib/pg_ext.bundle, 9): Library not loaded: libpq.5.dylib Referenced from: /Users/michaeljmccoy/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p290/gems/pg-0.12.2/lib/pg_ext.bundle Reason: no suitable image found.   • Why would I want to install node.js in my Rails Application?

    Okay guys, I'm super confused. I thought node.js was a sever side framwork, basically the js version of Ruby's Rails or PHP's Zend. However, I'm having some difficulty with turbolinks, and it seems to be the way to fix it is through installing node.js I mean, I don't understand this at all. How can two frameworks work together like this? Also, it's not a gem (that REALLY would have confused me), you have to install node.js it onto your local machine by running (in the case of Ubuntu) sudo apt-get install nodejs Firstly, how does this totally separate framwork have any bearing on rails? Secondly, surely this isn't fixing the problem forever? When you specify a gem in your gemfile, the server knows what external libraries to install. How does the server know to install nodejs?

  • What set of tools make up "the rails way" of testing javascript in the browser?

    What's the concensus for doing in-browser (either headless or remote-controlled) testing of javascript? Unit testing my JS is nice, but can't protect against irresponsible changes to the DOM. Unit testing of the JS and functional testing of the views to make sure they both provide and utilize the same, correct DOM, might work, but then the link between JS and DOM is being covered in two places which seems brittle or cumbersome. Is there an acknowledged "Rails Way" to implement full-stack tests, where I can run my javascript against the DOM rendered by the rest of the app, and check the results? (Something like what PHPUnit and Selenium give us, but inside the rails framework?)

  • Is is OK to use a non-primary key as the id in a rails resource?

    I am getting ready to set up a resource for some new api calls to my rails application. I am planning on calling the resource devices ie resources :devices This is going to represent a android mobile devices I know this will get me routes such as GET devices/:id In most cases :id would be an integer representing the primary key, and in the controller we would use :id as such: GET devices/1 @device = Device.find(params[:id]) In this case I would like to use :id as the google_cloud_messaging_reg_id So I would like to have requests like this: GET devices/some_long_gcm_id and then in the controller , just us params[:id] to look up the device by the gcm registration id. This seem more natural, since the device will know it's gcm id rather than it's rails integer id. Are there any reasons I should avoid doing this?

  • Hosting rails sites; vps or shared, and how much ram? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I have 3 rails sites to launch, all of which are fairly small and consisting of a custom cms, one with an online store, and 2 sinatra sites which are mainly static, portfolio sites. What would be the best way to host these sites (I've deployed on dreamhost shared before and some vps's) Is it best to manage them together under one vps? e.g linode $20/m (for the cheapest option, 512mb and would that even be enough ram?) or keep each rails site separate and host each one on a small vps? e.g $4/m (there's often lots of deals like this on webhostingtalk) I'm currently hosting the sinatra sites for free on heroku but finding it a bit slow sometimes.

    My customer, a translations business owner, just told me that he has been reading about Ruby on Rails and told me that "there are more PHP guys around there" and "it seems the community prefers it". What would you, as software engineer and freelancer, say to the customer to achieve these goals: Sell Make him see that the technology is my expert decision and Rails is as good or better than PHP (+ whatever framework) for this particular project. If i understand properly because i am using a shared server, and that Dreamhost doesn't suppose rails 3.2.8 I must use FCGI, although i am not sure how to install and to make it run properly.   • Why is Routes.rb not loading the IPs from cache?

    I am testing this in local. My ip is 127.0.0.1. The ip_permissions table, is empty. When I browse the site, everything works as expected. Now, I want to simulate browsing the site with a banned IP. So I add the IP into the ip_permissions table via: IpPermission.create!(:ip => '127.0.0.1', :note => 'foobar', :category => 'blacklist') In Rails console, I clear the cache via; Rails.cache.clear. I browse the site. I don't get sent to pages#blacklist. If I restart the server. And browse the site, then I get sent to pages#blacklist. Why do I need to restart the server every time the ip_permissions table is updated? Shouldn't it fetch it based on cache?     I have been having a problem with using Bundler and being able to access my gems without having to require them somewhere, as config.gem used to do that for me (as far as I know). same goes for any other gem.   • Routing Users to single Models with Rails

    I'm creating a Rails app for students and high schools and I'm having some trouble with my User.rb. I want to have a user model to be used for logging in, but having that user have many roles. The tricky part is that I want users that have a student role to have_one student page, and those that have a role of principal to have_one high_school page. The students and also nested in the high_school so the entire thing becomes a big mess. So my question(s): How do I limit a user to only creating one student / high school to represent them? Also how would I nest this student pages inside the highschool without screwing up the user system? My environment: Rails3 and Ruby 1.9.2dev Thank you!

I need to link all models between groups - for example question may belongs to 3 different things - one application and 2 devices. The same - for news. From other side - i need to see all news articles and questions related to some application or device. Any idea how to develop this in rails? I have only one idea - mixins that will add methods content_id and thing_id to models and join table.

  • Rail 3 custom renderer: where do put this code?

    I'm following along with Yehuda's example on how to build a custom renderer for Rails 3, according to this post: http://www.engineyard.com/blog/2010/render-options-in-rails-3/ I've got my code working, but I'm having a hard time figuring out where this code should live. Right now, I've got my code stuck right inside of my controller file. Doing this, everything works. When I move the code to the lib folder, though, I have explicitly 'require' my file in the controller that needs the renderer or it won't work. Yes, the file gets loaded when it sits in the lib folder, automatically. but the code to add the renderer isn't working for some reason, until I do a require on it. where should I put my code to add the renderer and mime type, so that rails 3 will pick it up and register it for me, without me having to manually require the file in my controller?

    I'm trying to override the Rails devise login to include recaptcha. I followed the steps here http://presentations.royvandewater.com/authentication-with-devise.html#8 however for some reason, authentication always fails. To isolate the problem, I removed all my code and called super directly class SessionsController < Devise::SessionsController def create super end end file is at: Rails.root/app/controllers/sessions_controller.rb the slide suggest Rails.root/app/controllers/sessions.rb but I assume that was just a mistake. Trying it out didn't help either. I even copied the full Sessions Controller code into my own, still gives the problem. Authentication fails here specifically: resource = warden.authenticate!(:scope => resource_name, :recall => "#{controller_path}#new") Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

  • Can't connect to Sunspot server in Ubuntu server

    I followed the steps in https://github.com/outoftime/sunspot/wiki/Adding-Sunspot-search-to-Rails-in-5-minutes-or-less to install & set up Sunspot search in Rails in a Mac OS and it is ok. In a Ubuntu server, there's connection refused error. When I run rake sunspot:solr:start and the proccess starts. The file sunspot-solr-development.pid is created in /tmp/pids But when I try to reindex rake sunspot:reindex ... rake aborted! Connection refused - connect(2) I tried to run the commands with sudo and gave permission 777 to the project files, but there's still error. Rails 3.0.8 Don't know where else to search for a solution...

Basically I have two models: @page { id, name, number } @extended_page { id, page_id, description, image } The idea is that there are bunch of pages but NOT ALL pages have extended_content. In the event that there is a page with extended content then I want to be able to have a form that allows for editing both of them. And when I am deleting all attaches from A via accepts_nested_attributes_for how can I get after_update/after_save callbacks for all of my nested models? Problem is that when I am executing callbacks in model A they are executed right AFTER model A is updated and BEFORE model Attach is updated, so I can't, for example, know if there is NO ANY attaches after I delete them all :).     I have three models: Service has_many :prices has_many :groups, through: prices Price belongs_to :service belongs_to :group Group has_many :prices I want to have an input field (Simple_Form) for every price. In views/services/_form.html.haml I do: simple_form_for @service do |f| simple_fields_for :groups do |g| simple_fields_for :prices do |p| p.input :price With this setup I only get input fields for already saved prices. How I can get a price field for every group? I tried to do it manually, but it got really nasty and didn't work either. Thanks for any ideas!
