  • How to create view in RoR if skipped during controller generation

    - by swapnesh
When I run this: rails generate controller hello index it no doubt generates hello controller, but accidentally when I run another command like this: rails generate controller world it creates the world controller successfully, but missed the Route "world/index" like as "hello/index". For this mistake I need to use destroy controller and then generate it once more, is thr some kind of mid way command that I can generate if forgotten something rather than destroying and creating every time. This command rails generate controller contact-us index creates a route as contact_us/index or contact_us after changing routes.rb under config folder. How could I create a more SEO friendly URL in RoR? Like localhost:3000/contact-us? I am working on some very basic rules to follow RoR..like 3 static pages (Home, About us, Contact Us) Just simple html content to understand more, will certainly add more features to it as well. localhost:3000/home localhost:3000/About_us localhost:3000/contact_us I created this via creating home, About_us, contact_us controller command and then changed html in views. Since I am on an initial phase, I read somewhere for static pages we can create this in our public like what we have error pages there in the folder or the approach im using is correct?

  • Spork doesnt reload code

    - by there-is-no-spoon
I am using following gems and ruby-1.9.3-p194: rails 3.2.3 rspec-rails 2.9.0 spork 1.0.0rc2 guard-spork 0.6.1 Full list of used gems is available in this Gemfile.lock or Gemfile. And I am using this configuration files: Guardfile .rspec spec_helper.rb factories.rb If I modify any model (or custom validator in app/validators etc) reloading code doesnt works. I mean when I run specs (hit Enter on guard console) Spork contain "old code" and I got obsolete error messages. But when I manually restart Guard and Spork (CTRC-C CTRL-d guard) everything works fine. But it is getting tired after few times. Questions: Can somebody look at my config files please and fix error which block updating code. Or maybe this is an issue of newest Rails version? PS This problem repeats and repeats over some projects (and on some NOT). But I haven't figured out yet why this is happens. PS2 Perhaps this problem is something to do with ActiveAdmin? When I change file in app/admin code is reloaded.

  • Rails program is not being run on apache + passenger - only directory listing

    - by user909943
I have successfully installed Phusion passenger + Apache 2 + Rails 3.1 program + git on a linux Debian 6. I ran passenger-install-apache2-module and followed the configuration instructions. I followed also the setup instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RubyOnRails#Configure%20Apache My program is in /var/www/myrailsproject and runs fine on webrick on my mac. When going to myhomepage.com (example) I only see directory listing. By preventing directory listing and setting Options -Indexes in < Document tag in /etc/apache2/sites-available default or myhomepage.com I get an error on my website: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Apache/2.2.19 (Debian) Server at myhomepage.com Port 80 In /etc/apache2/apache.conf I added: ServerName myhomepage.com LoadModule passenger_module /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/passenger-3.0.8/ext/apache2/mod_passenger.so PassengerRoot /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/passenger-3.0.8 PassengerRuby /usr/bin/ruby1.8 In /etc/apache2/sites-available myhomepage.com: < VirtualHost *:80 ServerName myhomepage.com ServerAlias www.myhomepage.com DocumentRoot /var/www/myrailsproject/public ErrorLog /var/www/logs/error.log CustomLog /var/www/logs/access.log combined RailsEnv test RackEnv test RailsBaseURI /mayrailsproject < Directory /var/www/myrailsproject> Options -Indexes FollowSymLinks -MultiViews AllowOverride all Order allow, deny allow from all < /Directory> < Directory /var/www/myrailsproject/public> AllowOverride All Options -Indexes +FollowSymLinks MultiViews Order allow, deny Allow from all < /Directory> RailsSpawnMethod smart PassengerPoolIdleTime 1000 RailsAppSpawnerIdleTime 0 RailsFrameworkSpawnerIdleTime 0 PassengerMaxRequests 5000 PassengerStatThrottleRate 5 < /VirtualHost I think I have tried all possible combinations of values and variables in < Directory (and < Directory /, < Directory /var/www etc.) the dafault looks like: < VirtualHost *:80 ServerName myhomepage.com RailsBaseURI /myrailsproject DocumentRoot /var/www/myrailsproject/public RackEnv test RailsEnv test < Directory /var/www/myrailsproject> Options -Indexes FollowSymLinks -MultiViews AllowOverride None Order deny, allow Deny from all < /Directory> <Directory /root/public/myrailsproject/public> Options -Indexes FollowSymLinks -MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow, deny allow from all </Directory> ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ <Directory "/usr/lib/cgi-bin"> AllowOverride None Options +ExecCGI -MultiViews +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch Order allow, deny Allow from all </Directory> ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log LogLevel warn CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined Alias /doc/ "/usr/share/doc/" < Directory "/usr/share/doc/"> Options Indexes MultiViews FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Order deny, allow Deny from all Allow from 127.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 ::1/128 < /Directory> < /VirtualHost So I wonder why my rails project is not being run, only directory listing. • Django syncdb not making tables for my app

    - by Rosarch
It used to work, and now it doesn't. python manage.py syncdb no longer makes tables for my app. From settings.py: INSTALLED_APPS = ( 'django.contrib.auth', 'django.contrib.contenttypes', 'django.contrib.sessions', 'django.contrib.sites', 'mysite.myapp', 'django.contrib.admin', ) What could I be doing wrong? The break appeared to coincide with editing this model in models.py, but that could be total coincidence. I commented out the lines I changed, and it still doesn't work. class MyUser(models.Model): user = models.ForeignKey(User, unique=True) takingReqSets = models.ManyToManyField(RequirementSet, blank=True) takingTerms = models.ManyToManyField(Term, blank=True) takingCourses = models.ManyToManyField(Course, through=TakingCourse, blank=True) school = models.ForeignKey(School) # minCreditsPerTerm = models.IntegerField(blank=True) # maxCreditsPerTerm = models.IntegerField(blank=True) # optimalCreditsPerTerm = models.IntegerField(blank=True) UPDATE: When I run python manage.py loadddata initial_data, it gives an error: DeserializationError: Invalid model identifier: myapp.SomeModel Loading this data had worked fine before. This error is thrown on the very first data object in the data file.

  • Django says the "id may not be NULL" but why is it?

    - by Oli
I'm going crazy today. I just tried to insert a new record and it threw back a "post_blogpost.id may not be NULL" error. Here's my model: class BlogPost(models.Model): title = models.CharField(max_length=100) slug = models.SlugField(max_length=100) who = models.ForeignKey(User, default=1) when = models.DateTimeField() intro = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) content = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) counter = models.PositiveIntegerField(default=0) published = models.BooleanField(default=False) css = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) class Meta: ordering = ('-when', 'id') There are a number of functions beneath the model too but I won't include them in full here. Their names are: content_cache_key, clear_cache, __unicode__, reads, read, processed_content. I'm adding through the admin... And I'm running out of hair.

  • Foreign Key Relationships

    - by Yehonathan Quartey
I have two models class Subject(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=100,choices=COURSE_CHOICES) created = models.DateTimeField('created', auto_now_add=True) modified = models.DateTimeField('modified', auto_now=True) syllabus = models.FileField(upload_to='syllabus') def __unicode__(self): return self.name and class Pastquestion(models.Model): subject=models.ForeignKey(Subject) year =models.PositiveIntegerField() questions = models.FileField(upload_to='pastquestions') def __unicode__(self): return str(self.year) Each Subject can have one or more past questions but a past question can have only one subject. I want to get a subject, and get its related past questions of a particular year. I was thinking of fetching a subject and getting its related past question. Currently am implementing my code such that I rather get the past question whose subject and year correspond to any specified subject like this_subject=Subject.objects.get(name=the_subject) thepastQ=Pastquestion.objects.get(year=2000,subject=this_subject) I was thinking there is a better way to do this. Or is this already a better way? Please Do tell ?

  • Getting the last member of a group on an intermediary M2M

    - by rh0dium
If we look at the existing docs, what is the best way to get the last member added? This is similar to this but what I want to do is to be able to do this. group = Group.objects.get(id=1) group.get_last_member_added() #This is by ('-date_added') <Person: FOO> I think the best way is through a manager but how do you do this on an intermediary model? class Person(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=128) def __unicode__(self): return self.name class Group(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=128) members = models.ManyToManyField(Person, through='Membership') def __unicode__(self): return self.name class Membership(models.Model): person = models.ForeignKey(Person) group = models.ForeignKey(Group) date_joined = models.DateField() invite_reason = models.CharField(max_length=64)

  • Value [...] not a valid choice, django-updown

    - by tamara
    I am trying to implemet django-updown https://github.com/weluse/django-updown. When I try to add vote trough the admin panel it says Value 1 not a valid choice. This is the models.py from the application: _SCORE_TYPE_CHOICES = ( ('-1', 'DISLIKE'), ('1', 'LIKE'), ) SCORE_TYPES = dict((value, key) for key, value in _SCORE_TYPE_CHOICES) class Vote(models.Model): content_type = models.ForeignKey(ContentType, related_name="updown_votes") object_id = models.PositiveIntegerField() key = models.CharField(max_length=32) score = models.SmallIntegerField(choices=_SCORE_TYPE_CHOICES) user = models.ForeignKey(User, blank=True, null=True, related_name="updown_votes") ip_address = models.IPAddressField() date_added = models.DateTimeField(default=datetime.datetime.now, editable=False) date_changed = models.DateTimeField(default=datetime.datetime.now, editable=False) Do you have an idea what could be wrong?

I'm an experienced PHP programmer, I still have lots to learn but I consider myself experienced. I sometimes use pure PHP and sometimes some framework like CodeIgniter. I always wanted to learn new technologies like Python and Ruby, and their best frameworks for web are Django and Ruby on Rails, but I want to ask to persons like me who migrated from PHP to some of this technologies if is it worth it; Thank you

  • Is possible to create an intranet site in Ruby on Rails? [closed]

    - by Akromyk
I'm just coming out of a .Net course and I'm wondering whether it is possible to create an intranet site using Ruby on Rails, and if so, would it even be a good idea. I plan on creating a web site for a vendor that hopes to open up a physical location and it would be beneficial for us to go with a technology that could tie their web front into their intranet for helping them manage orders and logins, but at the same time still have a low cost.

  • How to start Rails from a shell script on Debian?

    - by dsp_099
I don't really have any need to mess with passenger or capistrano at the moment. I simply want to run rails on boot on port 3000. I've attempted to replicate this tutorial for node as much as I could to run rails: I've a railsup script in /etc/init.d/ that goes something like: #!/bin/sh export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin case "$1" in start) cd /root/rails_app; /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-2.0.0-p247/bin/rails server -d -p 3005 ;; # starting other stuff *) I've also included it with update-rc.d I got it to work, but only if I run the script manually - it doesn't seem to run on boot. Is there any reason why ../bin/rails is unavailable on boot? I imagine there's something about ruby path \ rvm \ rails that I'm unaware of? Is there a way to use crontab's @reboot for this?

  • Unable to configure Rails with readline

    - by Liam Berg
    1) ./configure --prefix=$HOME/.packages --with-readline-dir=$HOME/.packages 2) configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --with-readline-dir I am trying to setup the most up-to-date version of Rails on my webhost (I do not have sudo access). Line 1 is the configure command I used for Ruby and Line 2 is the first printed line after executing 'configure'. I've googled this issue and found other people with the same problem but there aren't any real solutions. There are no warnings or errors when configuring/compiling readline-6.1. I am pretty stumped, any help/insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

  • How do I access site.project.rails (running on host) from VMWare fusion?

    - by Johnny Mnemonic
I have a rails app setup and running on my snow leopard MacBook - the app is being served by Passenger. As part of the setup they had me add entries for 127.0.0.1 site.project.rails in my hosts file so I could reach the site from site.project.rails I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the app show up in VMWare. I have XP setup and browse to http://site.project.rails and I can't get it to show up. I setup a basic rails app, being served at localhost:3000 by webrick, I can get that to load by visiting my hosts ip (http://192.168.1.1:3000/). I added the same hosts I added on my Mac to Windows. I also Bridged the network under settings for the VM. What am I missing?

  • Rails time stamps on images in CSS

    - by brad
Just posted this on Stack but realized it may be more appropriate here: So Rails time stamping is great. I'm using it to add expires headers to all files that end in the 10 digit timestamp. Most of my images however are referenced in my CSS. Has anyone come across any method that allows for timestamps to be added to CSS referenced images, or some funky re-write rule that achieves this? I'd love for ALL images in my site, both inline and in css to have this timestamp so I can tell the browser to cache them, but refresh any time the file itself changes. I couldn't find anything on the net regarding this and I can't believe this isn't a more frequently discussed topic. I don't think my setup will matter because the actual expiring will hopefully happen the same way, based on the 10 digit timestamp, but I'm using apache to serve all static content if that matters

  • Determine Server specs for a Rails with MySQL database (on AWS)

    - by Rogier
I developed a intranet applications with Rails (3.2) for one of my customers. There will be around 30-40 employees working with it. Backend is MySQL (5). What would be the best way to determine the servers specs needed? Given: max. load will be roughly 2400 (40*60) HTTP requests (mixed GET / POST) per hour. 15% of these calls are JSON calls (iOS) avg request will make between 5-10 database calls 500-800 SQL INSERTS per day webpages are fairly simple (no images, just text) avg webpage is 15 request (css/js/etc) and total size is 35-45 KB More specific, since they need access from multiple geographical locations, we are thinking of running a bitnami Ruby stack in the AWS cloud (uptime is important). Any thoughts on a AWS Instance (small/medium) and Utilization (light/medium/heavy) ? Thanks!

  • consulting a network admin for rails and php applications

    - by Karo Devos
Hi I'm a web developer who writes most of the time rails applications. Next month I'm going to switch from my current VPS to linode. I'm wondering how much it would cost to properly set (or teach me how to do it) everything to get my app up and running. My requirements are probably: nginx/apache, REE/ruby, passenger, full blown php environment, system wide RVM, search engine such a sphinx, being able to perform cronjobs. I have some knowledge of unix and I was able to install everything I needed on my development system. However I had quite a few issues setting up everything on my production server.

  • Access Rails under /app/, not /app/public/

    - by blinry
I'm trying to deploy Rails 2.1.2 with Apache 2.2.10 and FastCGI (yeah, bad, ancient, ugly, I know). My application can be accessed via example.com/app/public/, but I want to access it via example.com/app/. In my .htaccess-File (in the app/-directory!) I have: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /app/ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ public/dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L] How can I forward each request going to app/ to app/public/? Every time I try this (like, with RewriteRule ^.*$ public/$1 [QSA]) I get a routing error: No route matches "/app/" with {:method=>:get} Help?

  • options for physical architecture of rails site regarding caching server or cdn

    - by timpone
I have a rails app that is set on a single server currently. On production, I force_ssl for everything. I am interested in using a caching server for images (I'm fine with css and js being served from origin for time being). Would nginx or varnish (which I have no experience with) be a better solution (for October 2012)? I'd imagine that it would be easy to switch these around while still on this single server architecture. Or would something like cloudfront (which I also have no experience with) make sense for hosting image files? I know this is a vague question but appreciate any current feedback. thx in advance

  • Ruby on Rails tutorial problem

    - by RailAddict
Quick question which I hope is easily answered.. I am following this tutorial: http://oreilly.com/pub/a/ruby/archive/rails.html?page=2 and all is going well until I try create a controller and view it in my browser. The server is running and it shows the default page okay (http://127.0.0.1:3000). I ran ruby script\generate controller MyTest in my command line and it generated the correct folders and files. The problem is, when I go to http://127.0.0.1:3000/My%5FTest/ it says: We're sorry, but something went wrong. We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly. • Unable to use factory girl with Cucumber and rails 3 (bundler problem)

    - by jbpros
Hi there, I'm trying to run cucumber features with factory girl factories on a fresh Rails 3 application. Here is my Gemfile: source "http://gemcutter.org" gem "rails", "3.0.0.beta" gem "pg" gem "factory_girl", :git => "git://github.com/thoughtbot/factory_girl.git", :branch => "rails3" gem "rspec-rails", ">= 2.0.0.beta.4" gem "capybara" gem "database_cleaner" gem "cucumber-rails", :require => false Then the bundle install commande just runs smoothly: $ bundle install /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/bundler-0.9.3/lib/bundler/installer.rb:81:Warning: Gem::Dependency#version_requirements is deprecated and will be removed on or after August 2010. • How to store Ruby method references in a database?

    - by Mad Wombat
I am writing my first rails app. It needs to aggregate some data from multiple sites and for each site I have a unique way of getting the data (some provide RSS, some JSON, for some I scrape the HTML etc.). These will run on schedule, probably as a rake task from cron. It seems logical to store the sites and relevant information in a model, but I am not sure where to put unique data retrieval methods. Do I store method names in the model? Do I just name the methods the same as site name and call them that way? Basically, I need a way to read a list of sites and call appropriate method for each site. What is the Ruby on Rails way to do it?
