• Discussions on software architecture - Is StackOverflow appropriate place?

  Hi guys, I am using StackOverFlow for sometime, and its absolutely absolutely awesome for discussions on coding issues. But I don't see discussions on software architecture and designs. What I mean is, I don't see discussions where people put their design ideas and architecture of their software for discussions and ask for reviews and comments. So my question is, is StackOverFlow not the place for such discussions and is there any other place specialized for such discussions. (Like http://serverfault.com for system administrators or http://superuser.com). I am asking this question because, I am a beginner and am coding a piece of software for a course project and am too enthusiastic about it (and passionate too) and want to release it as OpenSource. And I want the code to be highly modular and highly extensible. But as a beginner I am not sure if the design I have comeup is good or not. So want to discuss it with people.   For our small team of 20 developers, we used do code review like: Make a label in svn and publish the label to the reviewers Reviewers checkout the code and add comments in line (with marker like: // REVIEWER_NAME::REVIEW COMMENT:) After all comments are in, reviewer checks in the code, preferably with new label. Developer checks the comments and makes changes (if appropriate) Developer keeps an excel sheet report for considered changes and reasons for ignored comments Problem: Developer needs to keep track of multiple labels which might have same comments Sometimes we even do One on One review and if we really have time, even do Table review (team of reviewers looks at the code on projector, on the fly, and pass comment) I was wondering: Are you guys using any specific tool which helps to do code reviews smoother? I have heard of Code Collaborator. But have anyone used that? Is it worth the money?

  I wanted to check the status of running Django on the Google App Engine currently and what the benefits of running django on GAE over simply using Webapp. Django main killer feature, IMHO, is the reuseable apps and middleware. Unfortunately, most current Django apps use models or model forms (django-tags, django-reviews, django-profiles, Pinax apps). So what are the remaining features or benefits that django has that can still run in Google App Engine (other than what's disabled: the popular django apps, session and authentication middleware, users and admin, models, etc). Also, is there a list of the Django apps that work in App Engine as well?

• Entity Framework - MySQL - Datetime format issue

  Hello; I have a simple table with few date fields. Whenever I run following query: var docs = ( from d in base.EntityDataContext.document_reviews select d ).ToList(); I get following exception: Unable to convert MySQL date/time value to System.DateTime. MySql.Data.Types.MySqlConversionException: Unable to convert MySQL date/time value to System.DateTime The document reviews table has two date/time fields. One of them is nullable. I have tried placing following in connection string: Allow Zero Datetime=true; But I am still getting exception. Anyone with a solution?

• Any great books of algorithm puzzles to practice whiteboard coding with?

  I'm looking to get some practice coding solutions to algorithm puzzles on a whiteboard. A friend is going to read puzzles to me (as if he were interviewing me), and I'll solve them on a whiteboard. Does anyone know any great books with algorithm puzzles that would be useful for this? I found a book called Puzzles for Programmers and Pros, but it only has six reviews on Amazon, so I'm not sure how good it really is. If anyone has any recommendations, I'd really appreciate it. • How does Alpha Five Version 10 Rate for Web App Development

  I came across this RDMS via the advert on stackoverflow. Seems to be in the vein of MS Access / Filemaker / Apex database development tools but focused on web based applications. It quotes rave reviews from EWeek and a favourable mention from Dr Dobbs regarding its ability to create AJAX web applications without coding. The Eweek review, apparently written by an ASP.NET programmer, goes on to proclaim the ease at which apps can be extended using the inbuilt XBasic language and how custom javascript can easily be added without wading through code. Has anyone here built a web app with Alpha 5? Does anyone have comments on the development process, the speed of it or limitations they encountered along the way? To me it seems Oracle APEX comes closest to the feature set, has anyone programmed in both and have any comments?

• Onshore work methods V Offshore Supplier work methods - how to strike a balance?

  Any advice on the best way to strike a balance between the work methods of an offshore supplier and the work methods of a new onshore team? We have an offshore supplier with about 2 years who have their own working practices and methods. I was bought in as the first onshore developer for my company with the view to vetting the code that comes in and putting together some best practices. Now from what I've seen there are lots of holes in their process (e.g. estimation, planning, code reviews, coding standards from about 10 years ago, no concept of mocking, refactoring etc). I need to be seen as a problem solver and not a problem creator but also I need to try and be somewhat forceful of what they are doing needs improving and at the end of the day they are a supplier. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

• How do I get developers to treat test code as "real" code?

  In the last two companies I've been at, there is an overriding mentality among developers that it's okay to write unit tests in a throw-away style. Code that they would never write in the actual product suddenly becomes OK in the unit tests. I'm talking Rampant copying and pasting between tests Code styling rules not followed Hard-coded magic strings across tests No object-oriented thought or design for integration tests, mocks or helper objects (250 line single-function tests!) .. and so on. I'm highly dissatisfied with the quality of the test code. Generally we do not do code reviews on our test assemblies, and we also do not enforce style or code analysis of them on our build server. Is that the only way to overcome this inertia about test quality? I'm looking for ideas to take to our developers, without having to go to higher management saying that we need to use resources for enforcement of test quality (although I will if I have to). Any thoughts or similar experiences?

• File upload help in JSP /Struts 1.2

  Hi All, I have seen lot of reviews and have not been able to figure out how I can solve my problem.. Problem: Currently we have a page to upload the file from local machine to the respositry. It is currently using Struts upload. Now the current requirment is, Since users upload around 1gb of file, they are made to wait for a long time.. So they changed the requirment to browse the file and select the file to upload and hitting upload button should return to the control to next screen imediately.. But the upload process some how needs to be pushed at the backend and should do the upload and send out an email once the upload is complete.. I'm not able to figure out how to transfer the control to next page, when the upload is still running ... any idea or help will be appreicated.. Regards, Senny

• Extending Django-tagging, adding extra field to each tag?

  heya, We're coding together a Django app to handle reviews of newspaper articles. Each newspaper article model will an arbitrary number of tags associated with it. Also, each tag will have an optional ranking (0 to 10). I was thinking of using django-tagging to do this (http://code.google.com/p/django-tagging/), but I'm not sure of the best way to add the ranking to the system. Should I extend django-tagging somehow? (Not sure if this is possible, without changing django-tagging's actual code?). Or is there a better way of achieving this? Cheers, Victor

• Best Online Programming Degree? (Masters Level)

  I am less then a year from graduating with my bachelors in web development, however I would like to continue on with a masters in programming. As far as I can tell, what I want is a masters in software engineering. Sadly my current college only offers more management oriented masters level degrees, and I want something that is programming, not business. Ultimately my goal is to teach online and work freelance on the side. Here's the problem - I am visually impaired, so I do not drive and I prefer to take my classes entirely online. I have heard enough to avoid university of phoenix... and I have heard some good about walden, regis, and penn state's online MSSE programs. I am wondering if anyone here knows of any other good ones, or ones I should avoid. I have heard mixed reviews of Colorado Tech.

• Restaurant review site in SharePoint

  I'm totally new to SharePoint but my company has adopted it for internal use. As a learning exercise I thought it would be fun to create a local restaurant review site. Can anyone point me to an example or tutorial to get me started? What I have in mind is a simple site where users can enter the restaurant name, cuisine style, address, a simple 5 point rating and price scale, and a short review. C# 3.0 doesn't just stop there." Should we increasingly use them instead of loops? And should be having loops(instead of those three building blocks of data manipulation) be one of the metrics for coding horrors on code reviews? And why? [NOTE] I'm not advocating fully functional programming on those codes that could be simply translated to loops(e.g. tail recursions) Asking for politer term. Considering that the phrase "code smell" is not so diplomatic, I posted another question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/432492/whats-the-politer-word-for-code-smell about the right word for "code smell", er.. utterly bad code. • What's the best general programming book to review basic development concepts?

  I'm looking for for a programming book that reviews basic concepts like implementing linked lists, stacks, queues, hash tables, tree traversals, search algorithms, etc. etc. Basically, I'm looking for a review of everything I learned in college but have forgotten. I prefer something written in the last few years that includes at least a decent amount of code in object-oriented languages. This is to study for job interview questions but I already have the "solving interview questions" books. I'm looking for something with a little more depth and explanation. Any good recommendations?

• Suggest books/learning path for writing smartphone apps

  I have been writing a lot of HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL and JavaScript lately working on a website, and I would like to move on to 'proper' OOP with an eye to making smartphone apps. I would like to at least cover iPhone and BlackBerry, which means learning Objective C, Cocoa and Java, before learning the specifics of interacting with the devices themselves, such as native bluetooth/GPS/internet API/methods. I would appreciate pointers to books or resources that will get me from a procedural web developer to object oriented app-maker. Most of the reviews of books on Objective C and Java have been mixed. I am about to start working my way through Beginning Java Objects (APress) which I have borrowed from my brother, so even if it's not a good intro at least it was free!

• What is your opinion of the Telerik Extensions for MVC?

  I've started digging around with using the Telerik Extensions for MVC. They don't integrate seemlessly into my current project, but I could reorganize things to fit it in. But, I'm wondering if it would be worth it in the end. I've been searching for reviews on the extensions, I haven't seen too many. So I'm asking here. On their website they claim: You can achieve unprecedented performance for your web application with the lightweight, semantically rendered Extensions that completely leverage the ASP.NET MVC model of no postbacks, no ViewState, and no page life cycle. So I'm curious, What is your opinion of the Telerik Extensions for MVC?

  I've used many over the years like Media Temple gs, dreamhost, slicehost, and some others that I don't care to remember. But it's pretty hard to find a new host with search engines, because they normally give you those crappy affiliate driven reviews sites. Which host would you use for: Small personal websites with small traffic. Medium to large websites/applications with medium to large traffic. What host would you use for your assets (large images, media, etc...). Favorite dedicated/vps host.

• Programmitically accessing internal storage (not SD card) on Verizon HTC Droid Incredible (Android)

  Hello, I'm trying to find information on how to programmatically access the HTC Droid Incredible's supposed 8GB of internal storage. To determine the external storage (SD Card) location, I'm using android.os.Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory(). I've not been able to find any corollary for internal phone storage. In examining HTC/Google Nexus One, Motorola Droid, and HTC Dream/G1 phones, there (as would be expected) does not appear to be any mount point for such arbitrary internal storage. On these phones the internal storage is divided amongst /data, /system, and /cache partitions. The Incredible's internal storage is certainly not going to be located in /system. /cache is also unlikely given that it is globally non-readable/non-executable. I'd read in reviews that the phone will still be limited to 512MB or so for apps, suggesting that it is not simply a subdirectory of /data. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I do not have access to a Droid Incredible unit myself, of course.

  I am looking to get my hands wet in Java Web Services. Apache CXF and Axis2 seem to be in demand a lot. I googled a bit for finding a good Axis2 book that has lot of working examples. some books like Quick Start Apache Axis 2 seem to have bad reviews on Amazon and titles like Web Services with Apache CXF and Axis2 seem to lack working examples. I want to get opinion from people who currently work with Axis2 and have read a book or two on the subject. Which is a good book for an Axis2 n00b.

  Hi I'm a big user of Wordpress however its not ideal for cms sites. I'm currently looking at pixie cms, however if say I want three columns, only one column can be allowed to change across pages and I can't apply specific templeates to pages. I'm also looking at impress cms which looks confusing in the admin although it has good reviews. Does anyone have any suggestions what is a flexible cms for a designer who only needs to edit the html and css and maybe add a news feed in one column. Thanks for your help Regards Judi

These two tables are defined as: Movie ----- ID (int) Title (nvchar) MovieReview ----------- ID (int) MovieID (int) StoryRating (decimal) HumorRating (decimal) ActingRating (decimal) I have a stored procedure that allows the user to query movies based on other user's reviews. Currently, I have a temporary table that is populated with the following query: SELECT m.*, (SELECT COUNT(ID) FROM MovieReivew r WHERE r.MovieID=m.ID) as 'TotalReviews', (SELECT AVG((r.StoryRating + r.HumorRating + r.ActingRating) / 3) FROM MovieReview r WHERE r.MovieID=m.ID) as 'AverageRating' FROM Movie m In a later query in my procedure, I basically want to say: SELECT * FROM MyTempTable t WHERE t.AverageRating >= @lowestRating AND t.AverageRating <= @highestRating My problem is, sometimes AverageRating is zero. Because of this, I'm not sure what to do. How do I handle this scenario in SQL?

• Checkstyle for C#?

  I'm looking to find something along the lines of Checkstyle for Visual Studio. I've recently started a new gig doing .NET work and realized that coding standards here are a bit lacking. While I'm still a young guy and far from the most experienced developer I'm trying to lead by example and get things going in the right direction. I loved the ability to use Checkstyle with Eclipse and examine code before reviews so I'd like to do the same thing with Visual Studio. Anyone have any good suggestions? Another thing I'd be somewhat interested in is a plug-in for SVN that disallows check-in until the main coding standards are met. I do not want people checking in busted code that's going to wind up in a code review. Any suggestions at this point would be great.

  Hi, Has anyone implemented a holiday workflow approval / tracking list in MOSS Sharepoint 2007? Can anyone suggests other solutions? The solution below works fine but I am specifically looking for a way to lookup manager of the user who created the holiday request list item in the workflow. I have followed this link http://www.u2u.info/Blogs/Kevin/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=39 which shows you how to create a custom workflow approval. Below are the steps outlined by the link. User add new holiday item to list Workflow kicks off Wf has the manager hardcoded (need a way to look this up, maybe from AD??) and creates a Task for them to review the request. If desired, this can include an email notification of the task Manager reviews, adds comments and approves/denies request User is notified of completed request Many Thanks, Naveen
