    What is the canonical resource on multi-tenancy web applications using ruby + rails. There are a number of ways to develop rails apps using cloud capabilities with real elastic properties but there seems to be a lack of clarity with how to achieve multitenancy, specifically at the model / data level. Is there a canonical resource on options to developing multitenancy rails applications with the required characteristics of data seperation, security, concurrency and contention required by an enterprise level cloud application.

  • Services or Shared Libraries?

    I work in an environment where we have several different web applications, where each of them have different features but still need to do similar things: authentication, read from common data sources, store common data, etc. Is it better to build the shared functionality into a set of services, to be called by the web apps, or is it better to make a shared library, which the webapps include? The services or libraries would need to access various databases, and it seems like keeping that access in a single place (service) is a good idea. It would also reduce the number of database connections needed. A service would also keep the logic in a single place, but then it could be argued that a shared library can do the same thing. Are there other benefits to be gained from using services over shared libraries?

  • Referencing external javascript vs. hosting my own copy

    Say I have a web app that uses jQuery. Is it better practice to host the necessary javascript files on my own servers along with my website files, or to reference them on jQuery's CDN (example: http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.7.1.min.js)? I can see pros for both sides: If it's on my servers, that's one less external dependency; if jQuery went down or changed their hosting structure or something like that, then my app breaks. But I feel like that won't happen often; there must be lots of small-time sites doing this, and the jQuery team will want to avoid breaking them. If it's on my servers, that's one less external reference that someone could call a security issue If it's referenced externally, then I don't have to worry about the bandwidth to serve the files (though I know it's not that much). If it's referenced externally and I'm deploying this web site to lots of servers that need to have their own copies of all the files, then it's one less file I have to remember to copy/update.

  • Microsoft InTune in a SBS2008 Environment

    I'm looking into using InTune and Office 365, mainly for the licensing benefits it brings but also because our company is moving to having more users based around the globe and I feel it will make managing the computers easier. Currently we have a SBS2008 (Premium) server running Exchange and File and Print which I need to keep for File and Print (Exchange can move to Office 365). I cant find any information on how the AD is synchronized between InTune and the SBS server (as users will still needs access control to file shares on the SBS server). Does anyone have any experience in doing this or even know if its possible? Richard

    Is curl something that's not expected to be installed on servers? I'm working for a small development shop and 99% of the problems that I'm having is regarding curl. Most of the projects that I'm working on involves calling a web API. Most web API's suggests using curl by default since you have to pass in a POST data in the request. Every time I complain to my senior that the server that I'm working on doesn't have curl installed the excuse that I'm always getting is that curl is not needed you can always use file_get_contents. So the question: is curl something that's not expected to be installed on servers that runs PHP, should I always develop using file_get_contents and not curl? Are there any advantages of using file_get_contents over curl or vise versa? If it helps, the context here is wordpress plugins, shopify apps, drupal modules and other bits of code that a lot of people can install.

There is a lot of talk about the benefits of using the same language both client and server side, and I'm not getting it. I could understand if you want to mirror the entire state of a web application on both client and server but struggling to find other wins... Workflow efficiency? I'm trying to understand why client/server language parity is considered to be a holy grail. Why does client/server language parity matter in software development?

I would like to mock the client, but the generated client interface doesn't contain the close method, which is required to properly terminate the proxy. If I don't use the interface, but instead a concrete reference, I get access to the close method but loose the ability to mock the proxy.     Is there any webinterface for administrating MSSQL similar to phpMyAdmin (for MySQL)? I want a self-service setup where developers can create a database through webinterface and upload/download backups of the database without local access. I've considered phpMSAdmin, but it hasn't had a release since 2006 so I'm not sure its worth the effort of setting it up. If there is something else (free or not-so-free) that would be great. My question is similar to this one posted 2 years ago, but no good webinterface was found back then. SQL Web Data Administrator seems interesting, but it lacks a few features - most notably creating new databases (also, not updated since 2007).

    I have been trying to find a neat tutorial, guide or step by step instructions for deploying an Asp.net MVC3 webapp but have found nothing so far. Everyone talks about his version of the stroy and different type of MVC versions. Right now, I have build a simple Asp.net MVC web application which i need to deploy on my shared hosting account. In a very simple manner, I need to know which files should i copy. Do i upload everything in my webproject directory to the server including the controller directory, views, models, content and bin directory ?. What about the Global.asax, web.config, packages.config, myapp.publish.xml. In short, I have no idea which files should be uploaded and which should be not. I am sure of one thing that i need few(MVC and Razor dlls) following dlls in bin directory. Just treat me as someone who has never deployed any website NOTE:- I don't have VS SP1 installed and it doesn't install either. Basically i need a manual procedure.
