Already finished writing the basic game logic,a CLI logic. My design includes several classes like, Dealer,Player,Table,Card,Casino and some others.. Enums for Cards and suite. I have read about MVC as a theoretical concept, familiar with the name 'design patters'(no understanding whatsoever as to how they are implemented) Everywhere I am suggested to learn while writing some real code.So I started off with this... I am stuck now, how should I go about writing code for my project?? Writing the GUI code and organising it within the already existent code.

  Q: This question is about how can i figure or select the convenient ORM to my web application. when beginning a new web application,What are the criteria on which i can consider a specific ORM is better than another one for my project or case(web application)? another part of my question : when i begin any web application i use three layers: the DB layer (which contains the connections , and handle the CRUD operations ) the Managers layer(the Data Access Layer) a class for each table on my db (loosely coupled with the previous layer )it contains the CRUD operations for the specific table and the other required operations. the interface layer.. and i use Object Data source.Is that considered as an ORM (as a concept) or I'm wrong in understanding this concept. note:I still a beginner in this field ,, and every day i learn more about web development. please i want explanation and suggestions for this point.   I want to write an App for android that has only one ListView. The App will constantly search for anything (mobile devices, desktops, etc.) that is connected in the wifi network. The problem is, I have no idea how to do this. What do I need to study? I comprehend I'd need to use a Thread or a Runnable to constantly search for those devices. Also I know very little about TCP, UDP or any internet protocols. So, can someone give me a basis of what I need to learn to develop this App?

The area of web application security isn't really somewhere where my organization can afford to let developers learn through trial and error. • Creating Ruby applications for Windows.

  I want to develop a Windows application. Honestly I care little about cross-platforms for now (but still would be good) I want to use Ruby, since it has quite a simple syntax and is so.. well, simple and easy to learn. My application is like a "game level creator", where you can design your own level and then run it with another application which is a "game level player" by reading the project file created by the creator app. You get the idea. Now, I got a new PC and is completely clean. Absolutely no trace of my old Ruby experiments and fails. First of all, I will need to choose a GUI platform for my Ruby application! Can you recommend me one? I have heard of Shoes and Tk, but want to know what you think.

• What is the "Entity" reffering to in fluent Nhibernate Mapping Configuration?

  I am trying to learn fluent nhibernate better so am doing a basic sample application from scratch, instead of using someone elses framework. However, I am finding I really don't understand what is going on in assigning mapping files. I have seen a lot of code examples which are all showing the same code, but nothing that spells it out. No description of how it works just that it works. Here is a code example that I see often. return Fluently.Configure() .Database(config) .Mappings(m => m.FluentMappings.AddFromAssemblyOf<Entity>()) .BuildSessionFactory(); So in the code example what is Entity? and how does that piece of code work? Part of me thinks it is the name of the assembly, but seeing as how the namespace I am using is usually the name of the assembly the compiler complains that I am using a namespace as a type. I feel this is important and am rather flustered by the fact I can't figure it out. Thanks

• Why do Lua arrays(tables) start at 1 instead of 0?

  Hi, I don't understand the rational behind the decision of this part of Lua. Why does indexing start at 1? I have read(as many others did) this great paper. It seems to me a strange corner of a language that is very pleasant to learn and program. Don't get me wrong, Lua is just great but there has to be an explanation somewhere. Most of what I found(on the web) is just saying the index starts at 1. Full stop. It would be very interesting to read what its designers said about the subject. Note that I am "very" beginner in Lua, I hope I am not missing something obvious about tables.

  As of now I have a working Spring application with persistence. However now I want to use Hibernate with JPA to do all of my database activities. I want to do this using an entitymanager. I've been reading many documents and tutorials on this matter, I've been getting confused on whether I need a persistence.xml file or not. Also I've been getting confused on how to setup my applicationContext.xml file as well. Does anybody know of a good site to look at in order to learn Spring + Hibernate + JPA + using EntityManager?

• Visual Studio 2008, MSBuild: "replacement" projects

  Hello, My solution has a library project which needs a special environment to be built (lots of external libraries and tools)... but it is not vital to our application. We'd like to avoid installing these tools when not necessary (most of our developers work on other parts of code). We have created another project which has the same API, but has an empty implementation and is compilable without those external tools. I'd like to be able to easily switch between those projects and still get all the references in other projects correct. I don't know VS/MSBuild very well, but willing to learn whatever is necessary. Is it possible? I am looking for ideas... We're using Subversion, and solutions involving some hacks inside VCS are also welcome.

• Is there any "modern" text editor with command-line?

  A command line in a text editor is a wonderful feature. It allows the user to explore the editor's functionality and learn it's shortcuts in a textual way. It's much faster than using the mouse, and it is much easier to memorise "shortcuts" this way. Emacs and VI provide this, though, emacs and vi are not "modern". By "modern", I mean one that is original built to cope with the modern de-facto standards of selecting, copying, pasting, cutting, undoing, redoing and auto-completing. Cream/vi or EmacsCUE are not valid options, since there are loads of things built over them that conflict with the mentioned stuff. Is there any alternative? (I do not intend to use the "modern" term as derrogatory. I love both Emacs and VI, but I hate their keyboard shortcut baggage.) (please do not advertise Vim and Emacs, that's not answering the question. I am asking for alternatives)

  Hello, I've been trying to learn Rails for a while now and I just can not piece it all together with random blogs and SO questions, so I've decided I need a full book/ebook. Can anyone suggest a good one? I've been looking at Agile Web Development With Rails 4th edition. There is an old question about Ruby On Rails books but it is from 2008 and there has been new Rails releases since then. I basically would like a book that is more than a reference, but also doesn't assume I'm a non-programmer. Also, I already know a lot of Ruby. So, what books would you recommend that is up to date and also doesn't treat me like a baby?

• Really basic Django E-commerce? Where do I start

  I'm trying to set up a really basic e-commerce site with Django, and am trying to figure out the best place to start. I am relatively comfortable with the framework itself, but have never done any sort of e-commerce development in any language, so I want to learn about some best practices so I don't make any huge or obvious mistakes. I've looked at Satchmo, and even went as far as installing and playing around with it, but it looks like way more than I want. I basically want to show users a list of things, and let them click a button to buy one. No cart, no shipping, just click a button, connect with Authorize.net (or something similar) to do the transaction, and then display a confirmation page. Any suggestions or online tutorials people have found helpful? Even perhaps a tutorial in another language. Or maybe a really lightweight Django plugin that doesn't try to do everything like Satchmo? I've been coming up with very little so far. Thanks!

I have many times read over the web (including StackOverflow) that STL is the best collections library that you can get in *any* language. (Sorry, I do not have any citations atm) However after studying some STL, I am really failing to see what makes STL so special.   My interests in programming lie mainly in algorithms, and lately I have seen many reputable researchers write a lot of their code in python. How easy and convenient is python for scientific computing? Does it have a library of algorithms that compares to matlab's? Is Python a scripting language or does it compile? Is it a great language for prototyping an algorithm? How long would it take me to learn enough of it to be productive provided I know C well and OO programming somewhat? Is it OO based? Sorry for the condensed format of questions, but I'm very curious and was hoping a more experienced programmer could help me out.

Since I'm about to start writing code that will record data like "how many users were registered on each day", I was thinking I could use this as an opportunity to learn more about NoSQL if it fits the bill. • Microsoft learning support for VS2010

  OK, I am a big fan of WPF, and while it is large area to fully understand, Microsoft has been great in posting loads of training video at http://windowsclient.net/learn/videos_wpf.aspx However with the release of 2010 it all seams to have gone very quiet. I expected a lot of the support to be updated for 2010 and I also expected a lot of new videos on the best way to use the new features in 2010. Currently I find myself working through videos based on 2008 (or even 2005) and trying to apply them to 2010. Don't get me wrong it not that I mind doing this, it just that I fear I may be learning methods which have better or different solutions in 2010. It is just me expecting too much of Microsoft, or have I missed out on a new website?

• Has jQuery core development been slowing down?

  So, I regularly head over to jQuery's Commit History on GitHub just to read through the new code committed to jQuery core. But there hasn't been anything new committed since April 24th. I've already read through jQuery core a few times and I'm pretty familiar with it which is why I like reading the commits. I just like to see what changed, why it was changed, etc. Why has there been a slow down in jQuery commits on GitHub? Anyone else have some recommendations for where I can go to view good javascript code being developed? My motive for reading jQuery's commit history is similar to the reasons I browse through accepted answers here on stackoverflow - to learn from people smarter than me. With that said, I am interested in the answer to this questions title, but I am more interested in finding a substitute to reading the jQuery commits.

  I have a small thing. public int GetSum(List<int> x) { foreach (int i in x) sum += i; return sum; } where x is a List of integers defined as List<int> l = new List<int>(); l.Add(4); l.Add(2); l.Add(5); l.Add(8); l.Add(6); and has been passed as GetSum(l) Is it possible to rewrite the above foreach loop using a lambda? And in consideration, id like to go into mobile app dev...So thats +1 for Java. • Seeking free ODBC database optimization tool for non-experts

  I'm a database n00b and am reading as many books as I can. I have been given responsibility for an ODBC tool where the databases were designed by a hardware engineer with some VB experience - which made him a s/w guru in the small firm at that time. Things are running slowly and I suspect that the db could have been designed better. I hope to learn enough to use Explain/Describe, etc maybe add some indices, but, in the meantime, is there any free for commercial use tool which can examine an ODBC database and suggest improvements. I'm just talking about db schema here, but maybe I should also be looking at optimizing Selects with Joins? Is there a tool for that? ODBC compliant.

• Perl, Array called by scalar doesn't work in foreach loop.

  This code outputs the scalars in the row array properly: $line = "This is my favorite test"; @row = split(/ /, $line); print $row[0]; print $row[1]; The same code inside a foreach loop doesn't print any scalar values: foreach $line (@lines){ @row = split(/ /, $line); print $row[0]; print $row[1]; } What could cause this to happen? I am new to perl coming from python. I need to learn perl for my new position.

• Beginner, learning as I go - how to get C#/SQLite db set up and ready for testing?

  I've messed with Access a little bit in the past, had one class on OO theory, and one class on console c++ apps. Now, as a hobby project, I'm undertaking to write an actual app, which will be a database app using System.Data.SQLite and C#. I have the db's table structure planned. I have System.Data.SQLite installed and connected to VS Pro. I entered my tables and columns in VS, but that's where I'm stuck. I really don't know how to finish the db set up so I can start creating queries and testing the db structure. Can someone give me guidance to online resources that will help me learn how to get the db properly set up so I can proceed with testing it? I'm hoping for online resources specific to beginners using C# and System.Data.SQLite, but I'll use the closest I can get. Thanks.

• what do i need to do now that I want to take programming hobby to next level ?

  i've always wanted to make games but did not start actively learning programming by myself until 1st year of university. i kept going throughout university learning new languages, showing off things i had made, while neglecting my major in Biology. Anyways, i've ended up with an Economics degree, with a portfolio of SaaS and web apps i had created so i could eat during my final year. So far, I'm getting a few interviews here and there in web programming positions. When I get a logic pretest, I fail miserably. or job requires comp sci degree. I mean I can easily design and code an entire app which I emphasize through my portfolio.... but i dont know why I am so slow at logic puzzles on prescreening interview... So what should I do now ? get certificates in languages ? go back to school and learn CS ? is it too late to get into windows programming jobs than web programming ?
