• What's the easiest way for a Java Swing client to consumer a webservice?

  I have a Java Swing application client that I want to use to consume certain webservices, but I want to make it as painless as possible to code (because really all I want is the info). I do understand that whatever solution is used will need to stub the POJO's too. If you'd like to give a demo, that would be great, or if you can point to a tutorial that would also be really appreciated. I did look at Axis, including the more recent Axis2, but it's a bit more complex than I was hoping (aka. I have to learn something). At least just for some quick prototype testing and not real development, more for the sake of just saying I can, is there something or a tutorial out there?

• what do i need to do now that I want to take programming hobby to next level ?

  i've always wanted to make games but did not start actively learning programming by myself until 1st year of university. i kept going throughout university learning new languages, showing off things i had made, while neglecting my major in Biology. Anyways, i've ended up with an Economics degree, with a portfolio of SaaS and web apps i had created so i could eat during my final year. So far, I'm getting a few interviews here and there in web programming positions. When I get a logic pretest, I fail miserably. or job requires comp sci degree. I mean I can easily design and code an entire app which I emphasize through my portfolio.... but i dont know why I am so slow at logic puzzles on prescreening interview... So what should I do now ? get certificates in languages ? go back to school and learn CS ? is it too late to get into windows programming jobs than web programming ?

• Adding a decorator that converts strings to lowercase in Python

  So I am new to learning decorators and I have gone through countless tutorials and while I understand and can mostly follow all of the examples, I think the best way to learn, would be to implement a decorator myself. So I am going to use this example below. I realize a decorator is not at all necessary to do this, but for the sake of learning, I would like to add a decorator that filters the strings like dog name and breed and turns them into lowercase. • In a virtual machine monitor such as VMware's ESXi Server, how are shadow page tables implemented?

  My understanding is that VMMs such as VMware's ESXi Server maintain shadow page tables to map virtual page addresses of guest operating systems directly to machine (hardware) addresses. I've been told that shadow page tables are then used directly by the processor's paging hardware to allow memory access in the VM to execute without translation overhead. I would like to understand a bit more about how the shadow page table mechanism works in a VMM. Is my high level understanding above correct? What kind of data structures are used in the implementation of shadow page tables? What is the flow of control from the guest operating system all the way to the hardware? How are memory access translations made for a guest operating system before its shadow page table is populated? How is page sharing supported? Short of straight up reading the source code of an open source VMM, what resources can I look into to learn more about hardware virtualization?

• How can i set isdigit() command as a variable?

  I'm new to python but I caught on to the basics pretty quick and decided to start trying to make a program while I'm still learning, since I learn best by actually doing things. So I'm making a program in python that will add polynomials and I need to see if a character from the parser is numeric im using the isdigit() command. Instead of having to type isdigit() all the time in my code such as n.isdigit(), I want to assign it to a variable t = 'isdigit()' and then type n.t. This doesn't work, so is there an alternative to not typing the whole command?

What I need to do is to perform some operations so that I can compare the two data entries in each 'row'. To be more precise, one column has constant numbers all the way down, whereas the other column varies. So I need to count the number of times the varying column data entry values crosses the constant value on the other column. • Operating System Widget Side Project

  I want to start on a side project and here's my idea: Whenever the user's mouse is pressed down, I want a small ring around the cursor to show up. I'm mainly doing this to learn more about programming and get myself to think outside of work related materials. • Asking for input without stopping the script in python.

  I am (trying) to make a simple IRC client in python (as kind of a project while I learn the language). I have a loop that I use to receive and parse what the IRC server sends me, but if I use raw_input to input stuff, it stops the loop dead in its tracks until I input something (obviously). How can I input something without the loop stopping? Thanks in advance. (I don´t think I need to post the code, I just want to input something without the while 1 loop stopping.)

  Hi, hope someone can help me on learning some new stuff about delegates in iOS-programming. I have a "MainViewController" which is the first VC when the app starts. I´ve a kind of modelselection with different UIImageViews and after choosing one of them, i´m pushing a new VC. I want to handle the modelChoice with a delegate, so all other viewControllers can listen to that and act based on the users choice. But does that mean that i have to alloc a new instance of that "MainViewController" in every VC? Whats the solution on that? How do i create (i think its called) static delegate? • Can I pass a string variable into an <a href> tag for a website link?

  I am somewhat new to web developing, so I am trying to learn along the way. I have a div that is 500 x 500. Inside of that div I have two divs that are each 250x500. So my outer div is filled up with the two inner divs. I have it setup so that when I click on the first div (the left one) a java script is called, and a prompt pop up box asks for a website URL which is then stored inside of a string variable. How can I make it so that the second div (the right one) takes the string variable from the alert box from the left div and puts it into an a href tag so that I can link to the website from the right div? Can a a href tag accept a value from a variable for its link? Maybe I am going about this all wrong, is there a better way I should be approaching this? Any help is appreciated!!

I've read abstract articles and papers describing trust metrics but haven't seen any actual implementations. My goal is to create a system that allows users to vote on other users and the content of other users and with those votes and related meta-data, determine if those votes can be applied to a users level or popularity.   Hi, I'm trying to generate the accessors and mutators for my variables automatically, but just can't find a way. I tried the right-click/refactor... solution, but the refactor item doesn't appear. I'm not in the mood right now to learn how to write a macro to do this, and I don't have the money to buy a commercial solution (internship student). Any help is welcome, I don't feel like writing all my get/set by hand. note : it's C++ so the {get;set} syntax doesn't work (or does it ?).

• How to do MVC form url formatting?

  I am using PHP. I want to create an MVC setup from scratch to learn more about how MVC works. I want to use clean urls with slashes as delimiters for the arguments. How do people do this when it comes to GET method forms? Or do people avoid GET method forms all together? As of right now the ways I can imagine are: Don't use GET method forms (although this makes it harder to let users bookmark/link in some cases). Use AJAX instead of form submission (although what do you do for SEO and JS disablers?). Have page submit to itself with post method, then reform the post vars into an url, then rerout to that url using headers (seems like wasted resources). Any suggestions or suggested reading welcome.

I have searched online for tutorials but most stop at the same stage and only show you how to launch the "helloWorld" app. My question is this: 1) Will using solely XML be sufficient to code an app? • SVG Animation in Python? - Any options other than Things! 0.4?

  I recently gave my daughter some time on the computer, and she really likes a program called 'BabySmash!', and I also have another program that came with a keyboard attachment called 'Laugh, Smile & Learn' from playschool I think. I'm not a python guru by any stretch of the imagination and I kind of have it in my head that I want to create some sort of program in the spirit of these two, with vector animation and sounds. Thing is, it doesn't look like there are many options for vector animation in python. I found a library called Things! 0.4, but it's lacking in-depth documentation and seems to be more of an experiment in vector animation rather than a full blown solution. Are there any options that I'm not immediately finding? What other animation-libraries do you recommend? Even if the library isn't vector-based, ease of use is probably the strongest factor in my use.

Sometimes docs for a certain SCM contain examples comparing that particular SCM to a couple of others. But I'm looking for a central place that contains maximum available information. Example: one uses bzr and knows that 'bzr pull' syncs a local repo by fetching new content from a remote repo. One want to know how to do that with git. One finds the git command, he knows the keyword. Since the keyword is known, one can proceed straight to git docs, he knows what to read about, he doesn't have to waste time by searching the git docs. I understand this might be not the only way people use to learn a new SCM tool. If you use other approaches, please do tell.

• What are your references/recommendation on .NET DVDs, books and online training?

  There are lots of training methods from different vendors to learn .NET technologies (i.e. books, DVDs, online training, etc.). All of them claim the same thing: that they are the best, their content is 100% guaranteed, makes their customers professional in no time, etc. It’s confusing and sometimes frustrating as well. I especially want a training resource (i.e. a course) to provide valuable content in short time. More importantly I feel they should do their job properly so as to avoid the customer feeling they've wasted time or money. What I should do when I evaluating training methods and resources to help further software development skills? What are your training sources? Do you have any recommendations?

• How do I change careers to become a programmer without spending a lot of money

  I'm currently a network engineer, but find myself wanting to get into the world of development. I took a little bit of Java in college, am 27 years old and have been network engineering for 4 years now. I have a mortgage and student loans so going back to school would be difficult. I'm willing to put in however much hardwork is needed around my full time job to learn, but part of me feels I may need actuall schooling to get down some of the advanced concepts. Just looking for a little advice and direction. I have purchased a bunch of the Head First programming books and have begun reading through some of them as I figure out my way into this transition.

  One of the best ways to learn about programming is reading high quality code/projects from great engineers. Which open-source projects do you think is worth looking at? I mean, that code that you can print and sit under a tree with a glass of wine and enjoy reading. If you can, also specify if the software is great to look at because its documentation, design, UML diagrams or just plain code. I believe UML is not very common within open-source projects.
