• Handling primary key duplicates in a data warehouse load

  I'm currently building an ETL system to load a data warehouse from a transactional system. The grain of my fact table is the transaction level. In order to ensure I don't load duplicate rows I've put a primary key on the fact table, which is the transaction ID. I've encountered a problem with transactions being reversed - In the transactional database this is done via a status, which I pick up and I can work out if the transaction is being done, or rolled back so I can load a reversal row in the warehouse. However, the reversal row will have the same transaction ID and so I get a primary key violation. I've solved this for now by negating the primary key, so transaction ID 1 would be a payment, and transaction ID -1 (In the warehouse only) would be the reversal. I have considered an alternative of generating a BIT column, where 0 is normal and 1 is reversal, then making the PK the transaction ID and the BIT column. My question is, is this a good practice, and has anyone else encountered anything like this? For reference, this is a payment processing system, so values will not be modified, so there will only ever be transactions and reversals.

• Simple aggregating query very slow in PostgreSql, any way to improve?

  HI I have a table which holds files and their types such as CREATE TABLE files ( id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY, name VARCHAR(255), filetype VARCHAR(255), ... ); and another table for holding file properties such as CREATE TABLE properties ( id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY, file_id INTEGER CONSTRAINT fk_files REFERENCES files(id), size INTEGER, ... // other property fields ); The file_id field has an index. The file table has around 800k lines, and the properties table around 200k (not all files necessarily have/need a properties). I want to do aggregating queries, for example find the average size and standard deviation for all file types. But it's very slow - around 70 seconds for the latter query. I understand it needs a sequential scan, but still it seems too much. • Using custom HTML attributes for JavaScript purposes?

  One of my colleagues doesn't like to use HTML classes and ids for javascript/jQuery purpose. Therefore I've seen that he had created custom html attribute such as <div id="myid" class="cssClasses ..." [some-purpose-id]="mycustomId">...</div> I asked him if it was really a good idea and he replied that he considers that classes and Ids should be reserved for styling. Personally, I would have used classes. Some classes would have been used for styling, and some other classes would have been used for programming (jQuery selectors). The idea is to keep things appart also. And of course jQuery could set styling classes but if possible not use them for selection. Of course I also use id when appropriate but since an id is unique on a page, I like to do generic stuff using classes. I would like to know you opinions on the better approach (if there is one).   Hello, I have to migrate this query (simplified here) from T-SQL to ORACLE SET IDENTITY_INSERT table ON INSERT INTO table (id, value) VALUES (1, 2) SET IDENTITY_INSERT table OFF id being an Identity field in SQLServer. I have the same table with a sequence in ORACLE, I couldn't find a snippet that shows how to disable the sequence and set it to start again with the MAX(id) + 1. • Hibernate saveOrUpdate fails when I execute it on empty table.

  I'm try to insert or update db record with following code: Category category = new Category(); category.setName('catName'); category.setId(1L); categoryDao.saveOrUpdate(category); When there is a category with id=1 already in database everything works. But if there is no record with id=1 I got following exception: org.hibernate.StaleStateException: Batch update returned unexpected row count from update [0]; actual row count: 0; expected: 1: Here is my Category class setters, getters and constructors ommited for clarity: @Entity public class Category { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO) private Long id; private String name; @ManyToOne private Category parent; @OneToMany(fetch = FetchType.LAZY, mappedBy = "parent") private List<Category> categories = new ArrayList<Category>(); } In the console I see this hibernate query: update Category set name=?, parent_id=? where id=? • Rails RESTful routs without #new, rspec trouble

  I'm currently writing a Rails app, and hit a somewhat strange quirk. I have a controller PermissionsController, which is mainly for display purposes at the moment. So my routing is locked down: map.resources :permissions, :only => [:index, :show] Unfortunately, when writing the tests, one of the routing tests fails: it "does not recognize #new" do { :get => "/permissions/new" }.should_not be_routable end with the error: Expected 'GET /permissions/new' to fail, but it routed to {"action"=>"show", "id"=>"new", "controller"=>"permissions"} instead Obviously, the #show action's route is matching with /permissions/:id, which also gives the expected error Couldn't find Permission with ID=new if you actually browse to that URL. This is not a serious error, as it is correctly raising an exception with the bad :id parameter, but it's kind of ugly. Is there any way to actually make Rails reject that route? Some trick in the routing options that I'm missing? I suppose I should just leave that test out and ignore it, or maybe remove the whole RESTful idea altogether and go back to a simpler map.connect 'permissions/:id' style. I strongly suspect I'll be expanding this in the future, though, and kind of wanted to keep my controllers consistent with each other. Just having to add occasional :only or :except rules made routes.rb nice and clean...

  Is there an exact/correct term to describe this difference between the syntax/constructs of programming langauges e.g VB6 with its (if ... else ... endif) and C# with its curly braces for conditional statements. I'm using VB6 syntax and C# as examples since I'm more familiar with their syntax. For example, Visual Basic 6's syntax uses a more verbose, natural language like structure. If (id = 0) Then id = MyObject.Add(Me) Else Call MyObject.Update(Me) End If while C# has more concise syntax like: if (id == 0) { id = MyObject.Add(this); } else { MyObject.Update(this); } Conciseness? Natural languageness? Or is there a more "scientific" word for describing syntax?

  When I move mouse over the container panel, the child panel is displayed but as soon as i move mouse over the child panel, the mouseout event is triggered and panel get hidden. This is simplified version of my code because panels are located inside gridview and therefore i can't use document.getElementById("panelchild") as it is (the js will get the specific id latter), but for now i want to make it work for this simple case. • Which is faster: Appropriate data input or appropriate data structure?

  I have a dataset whose columns look like this: Consumer ID | Product ID | Time Period | Product Score 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 2 | 1 | 2 | 3 and so on. As part of a program (written in C) I need to process the product scores given by all consumers for a particular product and time period combination for all possible combinations. Suppose that there are 3 products and 2 time periods. Then I need to process the product scores for all possible combinations as shown below: Product ID | Time Period 1 | 1 1 | 2 2 | 1 2 | 2 3 | 1 3 | 2 I will need to process the data along the above lines lots of times ( 10k) and the dataset is fairly large (e.g., 48k consumers, 100 products, 24 time periods etc). So speed is an issue. I came up with two ways to process the data and am wondering which is the faster approach or perhaps it does not matter much? (speed matters but not at the cost of undue maintenance/readability): Sort the data on product id and time period and then loop through the data to extract data for all possible combinations. Store the consumer ids of all consumers who provided product scores for a particular combination of product id and time period and process the data accordingly. Any thoughts? Any other way to speed up the processing? Thanks

I don't want to collapse the frame and reduce it, which would be automatically done by the diff() function. So I had 10 rows in my original frame and am keeping the same amount of rows after the transformation. In order to keep the same length I had to add some NAs. I have taken a detour by transforming the data.frame into a list, add the NAs, and afterwards transform the list back into a data.frame. That looks tedious. Any ideas to avoid the data.frame-list-data.frame class transformation and optimize the function?

  I am relatively new to PHP and having some decent success however I am running into this issue: If I try to create a new instance of the class GenericEntryVO, I get a 500 error with little to no helpful error information. However, if I use a generic object as the result, I get no errors. I'd like to be able to cast this object as a GenericEntryVO as I am using AMFPHP to communicate serialize data with a Flex client.   I am importing data from a mssql database into mysql. Works except when it encounters the id of a previous entry. id is unique. I need to get entries that already exist so that they can be placed in the work of the day. Error is IntegrityError: (1062, "Duplicate entry '001355338' for key 2") This entry is already in the database. I need it entered for that day, but can not have it added to the table. Each of the created divs need to have a unique ID so I can access them specifically (at the moment, all my divs have the same ID specified in html so whenever I try to access a specific div it just finds the first one).   i tried something like this but the id value is not changing, getting the value for first record and set the value for all rest... insert into table1 (Id,b,c,d) (select (select max(Id)+1 from table1),x,y,z from table2 where... )
