• Periodically iterating over a collection that's constantly changing

  I have a collection of objects that's constantly changing, and I want to display some information about objects (my application is multi-threaded, and differently threads are constantly submitting requests to modify an object in the collection, so it's unpredictable), and I want to display some information about what's currently in the collection. If I lock the collection, I can iterate over it and get my information without any problems - however, this causes problems with the other threads, since they could have submitted multiple requests to modify the collection in the meantime, and will be stalled. I've thought of a couple ways around this, and I'm looking for any advice. Make a copy of the collection and iterate over it, allowing the original to continue updating in the background. The collection can get large, so this isn't ideal, but it's safe. Iterate over it using a For...Next loop, and catch an IndexOutOfBounds exception if an item is removed from the collection while we're iterating. This may occasionally cause duplicates to appear in my snapshot, so it's not ideal either. Any other ideas? I'm only concerned about a moment-in-time snapshot, so I'm not concerned about reflecting changes in my application - my main concern is that the collection be able to be updated with minimal latency, and that updates never be lost.

• How do I launch a winforms form from a DLL correctly?

  There's another question similar to mine, but I wanted to gather some specifics: I want to create a DLL that is called from unmanaged code. When the unmanaged functions are called in the DLL, I want to collect information and show it in a kind of form. What I'd like to do is, when DllMain() is called, and the reason is DLL_PROCESS_ATTACH, I would like to instantiate a form. This form should be run on a separate thread. When my function FOO() inside my DLL is called, I would like to take the information from FOO(), dispatch it to the form for rendering. So, more specifically: i) What is the proper way to create a DLL project and have the ability to have Windows forms created in the designer be available to the DLL? ii) What is the correct way to give this form its own thread and message processing loop? iii) How do I dispatch information from the unmanaged DLL functions to the form, or, alternatively a managed class that can update its own state and the form? The form inside the DLL is sort of a "monitor" for data passing in and out of the DLL, so I can keep track of errors/bugs, but not change the core functionality of the DLL functions that are available.

• How do I put data from multiple records into different columns?

  My two tables are titled analyzed and analyzedCopy3. I'm trying to put information from analyzedCopy3 into multiple columns in analyzed. Sample data from analyzedCopy3: readings_miu_id OriginalCol ColRSSIz 110001366 Frederick Road -108 110001366 Steel Street 110001366 Fifth Ave. 110001508 Steel Street -104 What I want to do is put the top 3 OriginalCol, ColRSSIz combinations into columns that I have in the table analyzed. In analyzed there is only one record for each unique readings_miu_id. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Additional Info: By "top 3 OriginalCol, ColRSSIz combinations" I mean the first 3 combinations with the highest value in the ColRSSIz column. For any readings_miu_id there could be anywhere from 1 row of information to 6 rows of information. So at most I'm only wanting the top 3. If there is less than 3 rows for the readings_miu_id then the other columns need to be blank. • Codeigniter: how should I restructure db schema?

  I don't even know if that's the right term. May it be known that I'm a major novice! I have three tables: users, profiles, and survey. Each one has user_id as it's first field, (auto-increment for users), and they're all tied by a foreign key constraint, CASCADE on DELETE. Currently, for each user, let's say user_id 1, they have a corresponding db entry in the other tables. For profiles it lists all their information, and the survey table holds all their survey information. Now I must change things...darn scope creep. Users need the ability to have multiple survey results. I imagine that this would be similar to a comment table for a blog... My entire app runs around the idea that a single user is linked to a constraining profile and survey. How should I structure my db? How should I design my app's db so that a user can have multiple tests/profiles for the test? Please assist! Any advice, information and personal-knowledge is appreciated! Right now the only way I know how to accompany my client is to create a pseudo-user for each test (so unnecessary) and list them in a view table (called "your tests")-- these are obtained from the db by saying: where user_id=manager_id

• Can't access media assets in an SWC

  I'm having trouble accessing content in an SWC. The main project compiles without error, but the assets (sound, music) aren't displayed or played. My workflow: i. Using Flash CS5 1. Create MAsset.fla 2. Import sounds, art 3. Assign class names, check export in frame 1 4a. Write out the classes in the actions panel in frame 1 4b. OR. Add a document class and write out the classes there 5. Export SWC. Filesize is similar to what it is when I directly import assets in the main project library. 6. Create Project.fla and document class Project.as 7. Import SWC into main project through the Actionscript panel. 8. Add code, which calls the class names from the SWC (e.g. DCL_UI_MOUSE) 9. Compile. No compiler errors, but nothing doing. And the resulting SWF filesize doesn't reflect anything more than the compiled code from the main project. Regarding step 4, if I just write the class name in the root timeline or document class, the compiler error will go away and the asset appear to be compiled in the SWC. But I have also tried: var asset0000:DCL_UI_MOUSE; And: var asset0000:DCL_UI_MOUSE = new DCL_UI_MOUSE(); Regardless the assets don't make it into the final SWF. What am I doing wrong?

• Dealing with image upload on server

  I have got a the following problem: I have got multi-step form where in one step user upload image to server and then few steps further supplies other information, when this information is invalid no data should be commited - also the image should be deleted. I was thinking about PHP session, but I've read here PHP - Store Images in SESSION data? that it is inefficient way. Every time you proceed step in the form the image is reloaded (in the session) and as somebody mentioned "You will want it to only be as big as it needs to be and you need to delete it as soon as you don't need it because large pieces of information in the session will slow down the session startup." - here i got a question: will it slow down the stratup the session of user who upload file or sessions of all users? I have to mention that I'm looking for solution that doesn't rely on operating system scripts (cron or etc) - I have no permission to run such scripts. The perfect solution for me would be: saving image on disk (for example in some folder named after session id) then after the latest step of form move this image or delete depending on form validation. If user unexpectedly destroy the session (for example closing the browser) of course the folder with image should be deleted. In nutshell I need somethig like callback to event "destroying session".

• Issue changing innodb_log_file_size

  I haven't done much tweaking in the past so this might be relatively easy however I am running into issues. This is what I do: Stop MySQL Edit my.cnf (changing innodb_log_file_size) Remove ib_logfile0/1 Start MySQL Starts fine however all InnoDB tables have the .frm file is invalid error, the status shows InnoDB engine is disabled so I obviously go back, remove the change and everything works again. I was able to change every other variable I've tried but I can't seem to find out why InnoDB fails to start even after removing the log files. Am I missing something? Thanks. Edit: Pasting of the log below - looks like it still seems to find the log file even though they are not there? The variables seem not to write on the php file. • Change class of parent div if radio input checked

  I've been searching and searching google for answers to my question but have been unsuccessful so far. I'm hoping one of you guys could give me some assistance. I have 10 divs with the class name "dividend" holding a table with the classname/id of "container" then two smaller tables inside that. Within the container table at the bottom is a hidden radio button with the name "page1". I wrote an onClcick for the container table so the user can select the whole table instead of the radio button, but not I'm trying to change the style of the selected container so the users know they have selected it. I have tried a few different methods and I'm able to change the style to the new class by just writing document.getElementById('container').className = 'selected'; But because all 10 divs share the same name it will only change the style of the first element it finds. So I tried writing this loop to check if there are any selected radios in the document then to change the else name the style as the default. I'm sure its something stupid but I'm pretty stumped atm.. Any help would be appreciated. • Determining Best Table Structure for MySQL Performance

  I'm working on a browser-based RPG for one of my websites, and right now I'm trying to determine the best way to organize my SQL tables for performance and maintenance. Here's my question: Does the number of columns in an SQL table affect the speed in which it can be queried? I am not a newbie when it comes to PHP or MySQL. I used to develop things with the common goal of getting them to work, but I've recently advanced to the stage where a functional program is not good enough unless it's fast and reliable. Anyways, right now I have a members table that has around 15 columns. It contains information such as the player's username, password, email, logins, page views, etcetera. It doesn't contain any information on the player's progress in the game, however. If I added columns for things such as army size, gold, turns, and whatnot, then it could easily rise to around 40 or 50 total columns. Oh, and my database structure IS normalized. Will a table with 50 columns that gets constantly queried be a bad idea? Should I split it into two tables; one for the user's general information and one for the user's game statistics? I know I could check the query time myself, but I haven't actually created the tables yet and I think I'd be better off with some professional advice on this important decision for my game. • Disabling Text field with Javascript when value in drop down box is from mysql

  Hi I have a simple script in HTML, using a dropdown menu. When the value 1 is selected, the user can write in the text field, if value 2 is selected, it disables the text field. However, i changed the values of the dropdown menu, so that one value was from a mysql table(using PHP) and the other remained 'option value='1''. Yet now neither text field is disabled. • Does the Java Memory Model (JSR-133) imply that entering a monitor flushes the CPU data cache(s)?

  There is something that bugs me with the Java memory model (if i even understand everything correctly). If there are two threads A and B, there are no guarantees that B will ever see a value written by A, unless both A and B synchronize on the same monitor. For any system architecture that guarantees cache coherency between threads, there is no problem. But if the architecture does not support cache coherency in hardware, this essentially means that whenever a thread enters a monitor, all memory changes made before must be commited to main memory, and the cache must be invalidated. And it needs to be the entire data cache, not just a few lines, since the monitor has no information which variables in memory it guards. But that would surely impact performance of any application that needs to synchronize frequently (especially things like job queues with short running jobs). So can Java work reasonably well on architectures without hardware cache-coherency? If not, why doesn't the memory model make stronger guarantees about visibility? Wouldn't it be more efficient if the language would require information what is guarded by a monitor? As i see it the memory model gives us the worst of both worlds, the absolute need to synchronize, even if cache coherency is guaranteed in hardware, and on the other hand bad performance on incoherent architectures (full cache flushes). So shouldn't it be more strict (require information what is guarded by a monitor) or more lose and restrict potential platforms to cache-coherent architectures? As it is now, it doesn't make too much sense to me. Can somebody clear up why this specific memory model was choosen? EDIT: My use of strict and lose was a bad choice in retrospect. I used "strict" for the case where less guarantees are made and "lose" for the opposite. To avoid confusion, its probably better to speak in terms of stronger or weaker guarantees.

• How does an ASP.NET programmer go from working on/developing existing sites, to creating one from sc

  I've been an ASP.NET developer for some time, always working on existing ASP.NET pages, modifying functionality, adding features, tweaking things etc. but have never built a site up from scratch. I've read books on ASP.NET, and they generally talk you through the various features of ASP.NET with a mock up site, but it's always very basic and they jump straight in. The time has come however, to write a site from scratch for a client. I've never done this before. There are design considerations, but like a lot of ASP.NET sites, the basic idea is, you have a site, where users can log in, and save some information like their name and password and address. The site has some functionality, but that's the basic design of a majority of (business-related) asp.net websites I would wager. I know how to program in ASP.NET already on an existing site, but I don't know how to design my own properly that meets the criteria above. I guess the main worry is security. I don't know the best way to handle a simple log-in system that stores user information like their name and password. I understand there are a few approaches to this, but the catch with this project is that it has to be absolutely bulletproof. Maximum security. All those good practices for security, it needs to have them all. I'm not asking what they are, but I am asking where to begin. What should be the first steps after I do File New Project ? Where can I look for information about setting up a secure ASP.NET website? I'll figure out the content and page layout later, it's the framework that is the big thing. Any and all advice would be welcome. I really want to get my first from-scratch project right from the beginning. Just to confuse things, it's possible I will be using MVC, I am not sure if this has any impact.

• Parsing Windows Event Logs, is it possible?

  Hello, I am doing a little research into the feasibility of a project I have in mind. It involves doing a little forensic work on images of hard drives, and I have been looking for information on how to analyze saved windows event log files. I do not require the ability to monitor current events, I simply want to be able to view events which have been created, and record the time and application/process which created those events. However I do not have much experience in the inner workings of the windows system specifics, and am wondering if this is possible? The plan is to create images of a hard drive, and then do the analysis on a second machine. Ideally this would be done in either Java or Python, as they are my most proficient languages. The main concerns I have are as follows: Is this information encrypted in anyway? Are there any existing API for parsing this data directly? Is there information available regarding the format in which these logs are stored, and how does it differ from windows versions? This must be possible from analyzing the drive itself, as ideally the installation of windows on the drive would not be running, (as it would be a mounted image on another system) The closest thing I could find in my searches is http://www.j-interop.org/ but that seems to be aimed at remote clients. Ideally nothing would have to be installed on the imaged drive. The other solution which seemed to also pop up is the JNI library, but that also seems to be more so in the area of monitoring a running system. Any help at all is greatly appreciated. :)

• Can't access form elements

  Hi, my problem is that my variables are not working in javascript. all variables need names without some character at the beginning, this is the stupid thing...Anyways, im trying to make a funtion that makes "select all checkboxes". It is not working so i looked at the page source/info and found out that the variables were not changing. this is my input: echo "<input onclick='checkAll(1);' type='checkbox' name='master'/><br/>"; My function: function checkAll(i) { for(var i=1; i < <?php echo $num; ?>; i++) { if(document.demo.master[i].checked == true) { document.demo.message[i].checked = true; } else { document.demo.message[i].checked = false; } } } so yes that's it. I can tell you that i also tried without the <i> in: checkAll("i") Thanks for the help.   I was so sure that this question has been answered a thousand times before, but I've been unable to find an answer in StackOverflow. If there is already an answer and I was unable to find it then I apologize. I create hidden form elements dynamically like this: submitForm=document.getElementById('my-form'); var element=document.createElement('input'); element.id='hidden-form-data'; // or setAttribute('id','hidden-form-data'); element.name='my-hidden-form-data'; element.type='hidden'; element.value='my-data'; submitForm.appendChild(element); This works and the input field is created and it is taken into account when submitting the form. But I want to remove it after I have dynamically created it. I was sure that creating a new node this way would be 'correct' for browser and DOM, but apparently it is not. This returns null: element=document.getElementById('hidden-form-data'); if(element!=null){ element.parentNode.removeChild(element); } But it never gets removed and is always null. Is there any way I can remove a dynamically created node with an ID? Thank you! Please do not suggest jQuery, it's not possible to use jQuery for this, footprint is too heavy for such a small task I could not get a working answer from here, which was the closest thread I could find.

  I am looking to print using C#, micorsoft visual studio, asp.net. The goal:- I am trying to print all pages in a fax document. Format:- The fax document is received as a single .tiff file with multiple pages. Any Ideas of how to go about just printing the .tiff embedded image instead of the entire web browser window. <2 Although my for loop iterates through the pages. The print function is only called after the loop has iterated through all the pages and stopped on the final page (say page 6/6). And then it only prints that last page (along with the rest of the contents on the browser window). This is not what I want to happen... I dont want to print all the excess material on the browser window such as buttons, links etc... I just want the embedded .tiff image from the browser window.
