• How to get notified of changes on a read only table? (I.e., Price drop notifications.)

  Let's say I have these tables/models: Product - id - last_updated_date - name - price User - id - name Wishlist - id - user_id - product_id The Product table has a few million records and is being updated automatically each night via a data import (inserting into a new table, dropping the old one). I basically have read-only access to that table/model. If a product is on a user's wishlist and the price drops, I'd like to be able to notify that user. What methods can be used to do this? I have a couple of ideas: Keep track of the Product.last_updated_date in the wishlist model and periodically poll the product table to see if it has been updated. This sounds like a horrible/non-scaleable solution. Some sort of Postgres View or Function that triggers when the Product table is updated? I'm new to postgres so I'm not yet sure if this is even possible. Something amazing that you will suggest that I haven't thought of :) Any help in the right direction is greatly appreciated!

  I'm starting a conversion of a system from MS SQL Server to Postgres. I have the table structures converted, and I use "bcp" to get the data out of SQL Server. ERROR: invalid byte sequence for encoding "UTF8": 0x80 HINT: This error can also happen if the byte sequence does not match the encoding expected by the server, which is controlled by "client_encoding". CONTEXT: COPY cm_outgoing, line 200: "200 c:\temp\200.xml 2009-10-10 01:50:44.000 1900-01-01 00:00:00.000" I've already used "sed" to get rid of the NUL (0x00) entries in the file, and I can't find any instances of 0x80 in the file that I'm trying to import. Any thoughts? Is there an easier way?

• Calculating statistics directly from a CSV file

  I have a transaction log file in CSV format that I want use to run statistics. The log has the following fields: date: Time/date stamp salesperson: The username of the person who closed the sale promo: sum total of items in the sale that were promotions. amount: grand total of the sale I'd like to get the following statistics: salesperson: The username of the salesperson being analyzed. minAmount: The smallest grand total of this salesperson's transaction. avgAmount: The mean grand total.. maxAmount: The largest grand total.. minPromo: The smallest promo amount by the salesperson. avgPromo: The mean promo amount... I'm tempted to build a database structure, import this file, write SQL, and pull out the stats. I don't need anything more from this data than these stats. Is there an easier way? I'm hoping some bash script could make this easy.

  From programming pearls, it is known that array[1...n] has heap property if for all 2<=i<=n x[i/2]<=x[i]. • Problem about C++ class (inheritance, variables scope and functions)

  I have a class that contains some data: class DATA Now I would to create some functions that uses those data. I can do it easily by writing member functions like DATA::usedata(); Since there are hundreds of functions, I would to keep an order in my code, so I would like to have some "categories" (not sure of the correct name) like: DATA data; data.memory.free(); data.memory.allocate(); data.file.import(); data.whatever.foo(); where memory, file and whatever are the "categories" and free, allocate and foo are the functions. • Tell Xcode to ignore a header for some targets?

  I have an Xcode project with a mac target and an iOS target. The project contains a class IPhoneOnlyClass which is used in the iOS target only. I have unchecked IPhoneOnlyClass.m from the mac target so it doesn't compile that file. Now IphoneOnlyClass.h contains the line #import <GameKit/GameKit.h> When I am compiling for the mac target, Xcode gives me an error: error: GameKit/GameKit.h: No such file or directory I could get around this with a #ifdef, but is there a better way? I'd rather tell Xcode to ignore the header altogether when compiling the mac target.

• Is there a way to ignore Cache errors in Django?

  I've just set our development Django site to use redis for a cache backend and it was all working fine. I brought down redis to see what would happen, and sure enough Django 404's due to cache backend behaviour. Either the Connection was refused, or various other errors. Is there any way to instruct Django to ignore Cache errors, and continue processing the normal way? It seems weird that caching is a performance optimization, but can bring down an entire site if it fails. I tried to write a wrapper around the backend like so: class CacheClass(redis_backend.CacheClass): """ Wraps the desired Cache, and falls back to global_settings default on init failure """ def __init__(self, server, params): try: super(CacheClass, self).__init__(server, params) except Exception: from django.core import cache as _ _.cache = _.get_cache('locmem://') But that won't work, since I'm trying to set the cache type in the call that sets the cache type. • Importing CSV with line breaks in Excel 2007

  I'm working on a feature to export search results to a CSV file to be opened in Excel. One of the fields is a free-text field, which may contain line breaks, commas, quotations, etc. In order to counteract this, I have wrapped the field in double quotes ("). However, when I import the data into Excel 2007, set the appropriate delimiter, and set the text qualifier to double quote, the line breaks are still creating new records at the line breaks, where I would expect to see the entire text field in a single cell. I've also tried replacing CR/LF (\r\n) with just CR (\r), and again with just LF (\n), but no luck. Has anyone else encountered this behavior, and if so, how did you fix it? TIA, -J

• Clicking Elements in Android Doesn't Display the Correct Values

  I apologize if this code looks a bit like a mess (considering the length); I figured I'd just include everything that goes on in my program at the moment. I'm attempting to create a fairly simple Tic Tac Toe app for Android. I've set up my UI nicely so far so that there are a "grid" of TextViews. As a sort of "debug" right now, I have it so that when one clicks on a TextView, it should display the value of buttonId in a message box. Right now, it displays the correct assigned value for the first element I click, but no matter what I click afterwards, it always just displays the first value buttonID had. I attempted to debug it but couldn't exactly find a point where it would pull the old value (to the best of my knowledge, it reassigned the value). There's a good possibility I'm missing something small, because this is my first Android project (of any note). Can someone help get different values of buttonId to appear or point out the error in my logic? • Generic object load function for scala

  I'm starting on a Scala application which uses Hibernate (JPA) on the back end. In order to load an object, I use this line of code: val addr = s.load(classOf[Address], addr_id).asInstanceOf[Address]; Needless to say, that's a little painful. I wrote a helper class which looks like this: import org.hibernate.Session class DataLoader(s: Session) { def loadAddress(id: Long): Address = { return s.load(classOf[Address], id).asInstanceOf[Address]; } ... } So, now I can do this: val dl = new DataLoader(s) val addr = dl loadAddress(addr_id) Here's the question: How do I write a generic parametrized method which can load any object using this same pattern? i.e val addr = dl load[Address](addr_id) (or something along those lines.) I'm new to Scala so please forgive anything here that's especially hideous.

• matplotlib plot window won't appear

  I'm using Python 2.7.3 in 64-bit. I installed pandas as well as matplotlib 1.1.1, both for 64-bit. Right now, none of my plots are showing. After attempting to plot from several different dataframes, I gave up in frustration and tried the following first example from http://pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/dev/visualization.html: INPUT: import matplotlib.pyplot as plt ts = Series(randn(1000), index=date_range ('1/1/2000', periods=1000)) ts = ts.cumsum() ts.plot() pylab.show() OUTPUT: Axes(0.125,0.1;0.775x0.8) And no plot window appeared. • how can I open eclipse and see the project view I last looked at?

  I'm completely mystified. I do not understand why Eclipse does not show me my list of projects! And all the answers I've seen to similar questions do not mention any 'go here and do that' type of answers. I tried 'Import/General/Existing Projects into Workspace/browse-to...' but that told me the project was already in the workspace. But I KNEW THAT! The project menu does not have an 'open project' option!!!! There is no 'open workspace' option. How do people open Eclipse and 'resume working'??? What is the single, dependable, repeatable option for opening the 'project tree' to show my project? [or tell me my expectations that Java people are smarter are way off base!] Thanks, Kimball

  I am currently trying to build a web app using Google App Engine that will involve using the Google Maps API. Since I am coding in python, I tried importing the python wrapper for Google Maps (found here); however, performing the import will cause my web app to crash. Are there any suggestions for how I can fix this problem? I'm guessing the crash might have something to do with the fact that I need to incorporate the google maps python wrapper into my application, but how do I go about doing that? Thanks!

  I read a question earlier asking if there was a times method in Python, that would allow a function to be called n times in a row. Everyone suggested for _ in range(n): foo() but I wanted to try and code a different solution using a function decorator. How can I fix this?

  I've built an interpreter in C++ and everything works fine so far, but now I'm getting stuck with the design of the import/include/however you want to call it function. I thought about the following: Handling includes in the tokenizing process: When there is an include found in the code, the tokenizing function is recursively called with the filename specified. The tokenized code of the included file is then added to the prior position of the include. Disadvantages: No conditional includes(!) Handling includes during the interpreting process: I don't know how. All I know is that PHP must do it this way as conditional includes are possible. Now my questions: What should I do about includes? How do modern interpreters (Python/Ruby) handle this? Do they allow conditional includes?

• JSON.stringify() supported by IE 8?

  I need to use: JSON.stringify() which should be supported by chrome, safari, and FF (I think). I think IE8 also has support for the JSON object. I think IE7 and 6 do not, so I'm doing this: <!--[if lt IE 8]> <script src="http://www.json.org/json2.js"></script> <![endif]--> so, I think this will import the external javascript only if IE6 & 7. • How to get REALLY fast python over a simple loop

  I'm working on a spoj problem, INTEST. The goal is to specify the number of test cases (n) and a divisor (k), then feed your program n numbers. The program will accept each number on a newline of stdin and after receiving the nth number, will tell you how many were divisible by k. The only challenge in this problem is getting your code to be FAST because it k can be anything up to 10^7 and the test cases can be as high as 10^9. I'm trying to write it in python and having trouble speeding it up.
