• How to install custom c library?

  I just wanted to add a c library to Ubuntu which was created by Harvard University for cs50 course. They provided instructions for how to install the library which is listed below. Debian, Ubuntu First become root, as with: sudo su - Then install the CS50 Library as follows: apt-get install gcc wget http://mirror.cs50.net/library/c/cs50-library-c-3.1.zip unzip cs50-library-c-3.1.zip rm -f cs50-library-c-3.1.zip cd cs50-library-c-3.1 gcc -c -ggdb -std=c99 cs50.c -o cs50.o ar rcs libcs50.a cs50.o chmod 0644 cs50.h libcs50.a mkdir -p /usr/local/include chmod 0755 /usr/local/include mv -f cs50.h /usr/local/include mkdir -p /usr/local/lib chmod 0755 /usr/local/lib mv -f libcs50.a /usr/local/lib cd .. rm -rf cs50-library-c-3.1 I did exactly as directed. But the compiler reported “Undefined reference to a function”--the function was Get String. So, I searched for a solution and found one. It said to use the -l switch. Now when I compile I use something like: gcc –o hello.c hello –lcs50 (I don’t remember the exact command.) However, I cannot use the make command, which is easier to use. I understand that there is some problem with linking the library. What is a good solution to this problem?

• Computers on preexisting Windows 2008 domain accepting accounts from Samba3/4 domain

  I have a web application written in PHP where I would like to allow existing users to log into Windows computers, too. Re-hash of their passwords is doable (by requesting them to change the password). And to solve desync of passwords, I intend to have webapp authenticate users primarily against the domain. I don't want to give webapp users accounts on the existing domain, which we can call example.local. Instead, I want to provide them accounts on a new domain, let's call it webapp.example.local. From some research I have done, setting up a Samba4 domain and joining computers into this webapp.example.local domain would be one way to allow webapp users to log in. But, the computers should be members of the example.local domain. How can I get computers that are members of and are authenticating against Windows 2008-based example.local to also authenticate users against webapp.example.local? Magic keywords seem to be "trust relationship", "forest", etc, but at this point I haven't found a concrete example on how to establish this trust.

• Multiple SSL Certificates Running on Mac OS X 10.6

  I have been running into walls with this for a while, so I posted at stackoverflow, and I was pointed over here... I am attempting to setup multiple IP addresses on Snow Leopard so that I can develop with SSL certificates. I am running XAMPP - I don't know if that is the problem, but I guess I would run into the same problems, considering the built in apache is turned off. So first up I looked into starting up the IPs on start up. I got up an running with a new StartupItem that runs correctly, because I can ping the ip address: ping 127.0.0.2 ping 127.0.0.1 And both of them work. So now I have IP addresses, which as you may know are not standard on OSx. I edited the /etc/hosts file to include the new sites too: 127.0.0.1 site1.local 127.0.0.2 site2.local I had already changed the httpd.conf to use the httpd-vhosts.conf - because I had a few sites running on the one IP address. They do use the same certificate, which is why they are on different IP addresses. I also included the NameVirtualHost information at the top of the file: NameVirtualHost 127.0.0.1:80 NameVirtualHost 127.0.0.2:80 NameVirtualHost 127.0.0.1:443 NameVirtualHost 127.0.0.2:443 I can ping site1.local and site2.local. I can use telnet ( telnet site2.local 80 ) to get into both sites. But in Safari I can only get to the first site1.local - navigating to site2.local gives me either the localhost main page (which is included in the vhosts) or gives me a Access forbidden!. I am usure what to do, any suggestions would be awesome.

• load syntax as per file prefix

  Firstly, I hope that this is the right place. I couldn't decide between here and superuser. My home directory lives in an svn repo. all my dotfiles are in version control so that I can track them across multiple machines, and they all source an unversioned .local (ie, .screenrc.local, .vimrc.local etc) which can override/make local changes to the environment in a machine specific way. The problem is that vim understands how I want to edit many of these config files, but loses it's mind when I open a .local, and honestly, I'm not really sure what it does to work out how to syntax highlight etc a file like .screenrc the pseudocode for what I'm after is: if OpenedFile.ends_with(".local") behave_as_per OpenedFile[0:-6] endif I hope this makes sense and hopefully someone can shed light on whether or not this is possible.

• How to duplicate a backup set from one media server to another

  I really honestly can't figure out how to do this. It's easy enough to open Backup Exec and tell it to duplicate the data on one local device onto another local device. What I cannot figure out how to do is make it duplicate data from one local device to a remote device. I can connect to the remote BE server, but then I can only access the remove devices. I can connect to the local BE server, but then I can only access the local devices. I can't figure out how the heck to get access to both local and remove devices simultaneously. Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows, in case it matters.

  I compiled GCC 4.4.3 and installed it in /usr/local/bin, but whenever I install a port via MacPorts 1.8.2 the verbose output says MacPorts is using /usr/bin/gcc-4.2: checking for gcc... /usr/bin/gcc-4.2 How do I make MacPorts find my own GCC 4.4.3? Here is my existing path: /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/lib:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin Thank you! P.S.   I'm using htaccess to rewrite my urls so that I can have nice clean urls. However, the same htaccess file does different things on my local server and my remote server: On my local server the url to the website is like http://localhost/example/ and on my remote server the url is http://example.com/. For my local server I can use the following htaccess redirect rule: RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?page=$1 [L,QSA] However, when I use this on my remote server I get an internal server error. Instead I have to use this: (note the leading slash) RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /index.php?page=$1 [L,QSA] Unfortunately this doesn't work on my local server: this rewrite rule requests http://localhost/index.php instead of http://localhost/example/index.php on my local server. How can I make this work on both my remote and local server?

• Is setting an empty/blank DNS A record allowed?

  I'm trying to wrap my head around the wonderful world on DNS. I have created a zone file for example.com which contains: @ A 1.2.3.4 * A 1.2.3.4 However I am also setting up my local DNS, local.example.com which I have created a separate zone file for containing the following: machine1 A 192.168.0.1 machine2 A 192.168.0.2 When I dig machine1.local.example.com it returns A record 192.168.0.1, great. Sadly, badmachine.local.example.com returns 1.2.3.4, as does local.example.com. I'm not sure of the best way to prevent this. If I add the following to the local.example.com empty A records are returned for the above 2 examples as is the behaviour I desire: @ A * A Is this allowed? Is this best practice, or am I doing things terribly wrong? I'm using PowerDNS with BIND backend. Thanks for your thoughts!

• emacs frustration with web development any working dot-files?

  I really liked flexibility of emacs but it is really annoying to make it work. I want to use it for web development html, css, javascript, php. I first tried emacs-starter-kit . It didn't included nXhtml. Also C-g key binding does not work (they call it starter kit but basic key command does not work). I think it is mapped for git control. That's a frustration for a beginner. Then I replaced emacs-starter-kit with nXhtml. At least C-g is working. But code completion sucks, M-tab does not work. I tried code completion from nXhtml menu with no success. Also NXhtml mode did'nt colorized my file if css is mixed with html. Isn't it recommended for mixed html, css,php files. So why it doesnt work?. Why Emacs folks do not aware of convention over configuration? Dam! ship it something works! Please help me before I am getting crazy. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and emacs-snaphot-gtk 23.1.50-1. Please guide me step by step with your working dotfile url. Even I accept I am a dummy, it is really annoying and frustrating to use emacs.

• Why does Cut/Paste of form components sometimes stop working in Delphi 2007 IDE?

  This is driving me crazy. I'm not going to take it anymore. I'm going to ask, even at the risk of eternal public humiliation! (If it's something really obvious or that I've done to the system myself). For reasons I've never quite had the patience to work out, every so often the form I'm working on in Delphi 2007's visual form editor goes 'pseudo-read-only'; I can add new components to the form, I can move/resize existing ones (and change any properties in the Object Inspector), and I can select a component and 'copy' it to the clipboard. But I'm completely unable to cut a component from the form, or paste a new copy down. I don't believe it's to do with the 'Lock Controls' Edit menu option as I can toggle this on or off and it has the effect it's supposed to - this disappearance of Cut & Paste happens on the right-click context menu, from the keyboard and from the main Edit menu - it's as if the form has become read only to thing to do with the clipboard. If I close the form in the IDE and then reopen it, everything starts working fine again (just as D1, D3, D5 and D7 always did for me, previously). I'm not going mad, as I'm sure I read something about why this happens on a newsgroup once and it's caught me out from time to time many many times in the last few months, but I've failed to find the newsgroup reference this evening and I've decided that, as more and more Delphi users seem to be making use of StackOverflow, it was worth asking here. Help - when I'm doing lots of form-work it drives me absolutely mad!

But now i want to make my application independent . Am I going on right way ? When i am using runtime execute command , how can i make sure that this command is called through cigwin interface ? Also .. if i want to write .bat file .. i which i can give commands which will be executed .. how can i make sure that those commands are given through cigwin .. and not through cmd.exe .. • What effects has working in rotating shifts on programming teams?

  I work in a bank, and the boss now want's that we, the programming team, work on rotating shifts. He wants that sometimes we work from 7am to 3pm, and sometimes on 11.30am to 7.30pm. He says that we will be more productive working this way, because he has worked with teams just like that and he just knows that. Nobody of the team wants this change, but we don't know how to effectively reject this new rule. I was trying to find some empirical (or almost) evidence about how rotating shifts affects performance of programming teams, and I couldn't. I had read something about rotating shifts, but not exactly about the effect of this on programming teams. Do you know any research about rotating shifts on programming teams? Did you have any experience with this kind of work? EDIT: Other teams of the company, like the database administrators team, the help desk team, the communication team or the network administrators team are already working in rotating shifts, and they don't like this but they do it anyway. I think the boss want that we work on rotating shifts too because of them, but since only we do programming I think the effects of rotating shifts could be, at least, different for us.

• How can I prevent the "... has stopped working" window on my Server 2008 R2 dev box?

  I'm using a Windows Server 2008 x64 R2 machine as a development box. Amongst many other things I've got Visual Studio 2008 SP1 installed on it. When I'm working on a project, I sometimes need to use Debug Start without Debugging (Ctrl + F5). If the program throws an exception, I get a new R2-style window appear. I'm pretty sure I didn't see this on my XP box - this is the first time I've developed directly on a server. Is there any way to avoid this - it's really beginning to bug me? E.g. my current project is accessing a WCF service - I'm using Ctrl+F5 to start a console program client. I run it and get the window. The title is the name of the project I've just started and it contains: [insert-project-name-here] has stopped working Windows can check online for a solution to the problem. --> Check online for a solution and close the program --> Close the program --> Debug the program V View problem details. Clicking on "Close the program" will actually close the window and the exception message appears in the console, which is what I want (but without the extra window-faffing). How can I avoid this annoyance?

• PHP Multi-Domain Sessions; ini_set Not Working?

  Hello, I'm trying to set it up so if you log in to my website the session carries over to all sub-domains of my website. For example, if you go to domain.com and log in, then go to sub.domain.com, you'll already be logged in at sub.domain.com. To my understanding, you would want to use ini_set('session.cookie_domain','.domain.com') and then session_start(), then set your session variables, but this isn't working. Example of what I'm doing: Code for domain.com: <?php ini_set('session.cookie_domain','.domain.com'); session_start(); $_SESSION['variable'] = 1; ?> Code for sub.domain.com: <?php session_start(); echo $_SESSION['variable']; ?> But $_SESSION['variable'] isn't set. I've also tried using ini_set() in the sub.domain.com code, but it made no difference. I've verified that setting session.cookie_domain is working by using ini_get(). What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

• JavaScript library not working in IE, can't see error information.

  Hi there. I have been writing a JavaScript library for a few weeks now and it works brilliantly in Firefox, Chrome and Safari. I had not tested it in IE until recently. I do not own a Windows box so after testing it on my friends and realising it wasnt working I started going over my code for things that could be causing it to break. So far I have found nothing. I could not find any descriptions of the errors in the browser while I was there either. So I wondered if anyone could run my test script in an IE browser (6, 7 or 8) and let me know any information they can find as to why it crashed. Please ignore any information saying it works in IE6, I put that up there after testing it through http://ipinfo.info/netrenderer/ I just assumed it was working because I could set transparency and size via my script and see it run in this tool.   Hi i read this inspired, i am asking for specific help to achieve a 12 for my current project. i am working in a team of 3-4 on a php project that is based on cakephp. i only have a dedicated server running on linux which i intend to have the website live on. and i have a plan with assembla where i am using its svn repository. that's it. i like to hear a major, impactful step towards answering each point raised by the joel test. by impactful i mean doing just this one thing would raise my project to scoring or close to scoring on that area of the joel test. lets begin: 1) do you have a source control system? I am very proud to say learning how to use svn even though we know nuts about branch/release policies made the biggest impact to our programming lives. and the svn repos is on assembla paid plan. Feel free to add if anyone thinks we can do more in this area. 2) Can you make a build in one step? i think the issue is how do i define as a build? i think we are going to define it as if tomorrow my dedicated server crashed and we found another server from another normal hosting provider and all my team's machines all destroyed, how are we going to get the website up again? my code is in svn on assembla. 1 step means as close to 1 button to push as possible. 3)Do you make daily builds? i know nothing about this. please help. i googled and came across this phpundercontrol. but i am not sure if we can get that to work with assembla. are there easier ways? 4)Do you have a bug database? we have not used the assembla features on bug tracking. ashamed to say. i think i will sort this out myself. 5)Do you fix bugs before writing new code? policy issue. i will sort it out myself. 6)Do you have an up-to-date schedule? Working on it.   I am working on a factorisation problem using Fermat's Factorization and for small numbers it is working well. I've been able to calculate the factors (getting the answers from Wolfram Alpha) for small numbers, like the one on the Wikipedia page (5959). Just when I thought I had the problem licked I soon realised that my program was not working when it came to larger numbers. The program follows through the examples from the Wikipedia page, printing out the values a, b, a2 and b2; the results printed for large numbers are not correct. I've followed the pseudocode provided on the Wikipedia page, but am struggling to understand where to go next. Along with the Wikipedia page I have been following this guide. Once again, as my Math knowledge is pretty poor I cannot follow what I need to do next.   We're migrating from Subversion to Mercurial. To facilitate the migration, we're creating an intermediate Mercurial repository that is a clone of our Subversion repository. All developers will be begin switching over to the Mercurial repository, and we'll periodically push changes from the intermediate Mercurial repository to the existing Subversion repository. After a period of time, we'll simply obsolete the Subversion repository and the intermediate Mercurial repository will become the new system of record. Dev 1 Local --+--> Mercurial --+--> Subversion Dev 2 Local --+ + Dev 3 Local --+ + Dev 4 -------------------------+ I've been testing this out, but I keep running into a problem when I push changes from my local repository, to the intermediate Mercurial repository, and then up into our Subversion repository. On my local machine, I have a changeset that is committed and ready to be pushed to our intermediate Mercurial repository. Here you can see it is revision #2263 with hash 625... I push only this changeset to the remote repository. So far, everything looks good. The changeset has been pushed. hg update 1 files updated, 0 files merged, 0 files removed, 0 files unresolved I now switch over to the remote repository, and update the working directory. hg push pushing to svn://... searching for changes [r3834] bmurphy: database namespace pulled 1 revisions saving bundle to /srv/hg/repository/.hg/strip-backup/62539f8df3b2-temp adding branch adding changesets adding manifests adding file changes added 1 changesets with 1 changes to 1 files rebase completed Next, I push the change up to Subversion, works great. I'm now switched over. So, I finally click the "determine and mark outgoing changesets" and as you can see Mercurial still wants to push out my previous changesets even though they've already been pushed. Clearly, I'm doing something wrong. I also can't merge the two revisions. If I merge the two revisions on my local machine, I end up with a "merge" commit. When I push that merge commit out to the intermediate Mercurial repository, I can no longer push changes out to our Subversion repository. I end up with the following problem: hg update 0 files updated, 0 files merged, 0 files removed, 0 files unresolved hg push pushing to svn://... searching for changes abort: Sorry, can't find svn parent of a merge revision. and I have to rollback the merge to get back to a working state. What am I missing?

• How to fix "containing working copy admin area is missing" in SVN ?

  I deleted manually a directory I just added, offline, in my repository. I can't restore the directory. Any attempt to do an update or a commit will fail with : "blabla/.svn" containing working copy admin area is missing. I understand why, but is there anyway to fix this. I don't want to checkout the entire repo and add my changes to it manually, it would take hours.
