• Firebug is permanently inactive

  Firebug used to work fine -- until something happened -- not sure what. FF 3.6.3 on XP PRo current. The net effect is Firebug is now always inactive. The icon is present and gray as is normal. Click on the icon and I get: It does this regardless of the site. I've uninstalled Firebug and re-installed. nada. Additionally, the Tools Firebug menu yields nothing. The only unusual issue I can think of is it may of stopped working sometime after I created an additional FF profile (which has since been removed) for a test. Somehow, in removing the extra profile, my bookmarks were deleted. I recovered them from by my online-backup service. Any suggestions? I'd really like to get the Firebug functionality back. thanks.

• Why does my report recalculate totals when I scroll in Access '07?

  Whenever I make a report in Access '07 and include some sort of total (whether counting or summing values), when I'm viewing the preview and scroll, the total recalculate. This is really annoying as Access takes a while (several tenths of a second) to do this, and while it does that the totals go blank. I've looked for a solution online, but I can't find this issue described anywhere. How can I stop the totals from recalculating when I scroll? I'm hoping for a simple solution that would solve this for all reports, or perhaps a simple property tweak on each report. I don't want to have to add code for every single report! I should describe the report layouts I'm using - they contain rows of data all on one page, and at times I group the rows. The number of rows aren't major, maybe around 50 a time or so.

• What is a practical use for a closure in JavaScript?

  I'm trying my hardest to wrap my head around JavaScript's closures. I get that by returning an inner function, it will have access to any variable defined in it's immediate parent. Where would this be useful to me? Perhaps I haven't quite got my head around it yet. Most of the examples I have seen online don't provide any real world code, just vague examples. Can someone show me a real world use of a closure? • WPF: Convert memory stream to BitmapImage?

  I have an image that was originally a PNG that I have converted to a byte[] and saved in a database. Originally, I simply read the PNG into a memory stream and converted the stream into a byte[]. Now I want to read the byte[] back and convert it to a BitmapImage, so that I can bind a WPF Image control to it. I am seeing a lot of contradictory and confusing code online to accomplish the task of converting a byte[] to a BitmapImage. I am not sure whether I need to add any code due to the fact that the image was originally a PNG. Can anyone provide the code to convert the stream to a BitmapImage? Thanks for your help.

• Suggested C++ books?

  Ok, I've had one semester of C++ and will be taking a second semester in it after I have taken a Data Structure class this fall. In the first class, we dealt mainly with C++ syntax and the textbook we used was ok, but now I'm wanting to go ahead and purchase a great C++ book that encompasses a lot of the programming concepts used today. I'm learning Objective-C on my own and was able to get through the whole object-oriented stuff pretty easily, along with other things like pointers, inheritance, delegation, etc. It doesn't have to exactly have EVERYTHING in it, but I do want to buy the book with the most information in it. Money is no problem. So my question is what book did you use or still use for C++? Is it a book that you can reference back to if you ever forget how to do something small, or would you have to go online and find the answer.

• How do I find the IP address of a GPRS modem?

  I want to pull data from a device that is accessed via a serial protocol and has a GPRS modem attached which should allow transparent access over an IP connection. It seems to me that this approach is upside down, because how should I know at which IP address the device currently is? Unfortunately, the device itself is rather dumb, so I can't make it send something to my server, which would reveal the current IP. For home routers on dialup lines, there's dynamic DNS services. Is there something equivalent in the mobile world? Each modem would, of course, have its phone number as a reliable address, but how does that help me? Practically all material on GPRS etc. that I can find online seems to be concerned with initiating the connection from the modem side, since that's what the system is designed for.

  We implemented the online service where it is possible to generate PDF with predefined structure. User can choose a LaTeX template and then compile it with an appropriate inputs. The question we worry about is the security, that the malicious user was not able to gain shell access through the injection of special instruction into latex document. We need some workaround for this or at least a list of special characters that we should strip from the input data. Preferred language would be PHP, but any suggestions, constructions and links are very welcomed. PS. in few word we're looking form mysql_real_escape_string for LaTeX

• Really basic Django E-commerce? Where do I start

  I'm trying to set up a really basic e-commerce site with Django, and am trying to figure out the best place to start. I am relatively comfortable with the framework itself, but have never done any sort of e-commerce development in any language, so I want to learn about some best practices so I don't make any huge or obvious mistakes. I've looked at Satchmo, and even went as far as installing and playing around with it, but it looks like way more than I want. I basically want to show users a list of things, and let them click a button to buy one. No cart, no shipping, just click a button, connect with Authorize.net (or something similar) to do the transaction, and then display a confirmation page. Any suggestions or online tutorials people have found helpful? Even perhaps a tutorial in another language. Or maybe a really lightweight Django plugin that doesn't try to do everything like Satchmo? I've been coming up with very little so far. Thanks!

  I am trying to setup jQuery rows, with add/remove row functionality. I got started with online tutorial, http://jsbin.com/aciba that works fine. It only has input forms though. We need select to choose from. Now, I made some changes to accept selects as as well as inputs: http://jsbin.com/emata This does not work. Try selecting option 3 in cell 1, and press add "Add". The row added gets default "Cell 1" selected option to 1. What could be the reason?

• internet explorer ebay listing html/css problem

  The code i wrote for ebay listings seems to be different for the same listing depending on if it is opened with internet explorer or firefox. the source i uploaded to ebay was the same now when i view the code in firefox it shows correctly but in internet explorer it does not. when looking at the source taken from the ebay listing online the source code differs between the browsers even though it is from the same listing and same code. • How do I stop the scriptaculous blind-down effect from flickering when element has padding?

  Hi all, it seems that when the blind down effect is used on an element with padding it looks a bit awkward. It seems to blind down too far and then jumps back. It's a very subtle thing but is really annoying. • Changing Color with LinearLayout and TextView in Java (Android)

  I'm a relatively new Android developer and I noticed what seems like an oddity to me that I'm hoping someone can explain. I have LinearLayout ll. This line of code fails for me when executed: ll.setBackgroundColor(R.color.white); However this line of code works: ll.setBackgroundResource(R.color.white); I assume its simply because I have white defined in my resources. However, I've also tried passing 0xFFFFFF in setBackgroundColor() and that doesn't work either. Similarly with my TextView text this line of code fails when executed: text.setTextColor(R.color.white); I can see my TextView so I know I initialized it correctly (like my LinearLayout which I can also see). So I guess my question boils down to: How do I properly use LinearLayout.setBackgroundColor() and TextView.setTextColor() ? Thanks a ton in advance. I've read through the docs and tried to find information online via googling and haven't come up with anything.

Because of the difficulty in integrating smart card with its api on a web interface(i will post another detailed question on this later) we are planning to have desktop interface for this. There are 10-20 terminals which will use the desktop interface. 3 approaches for doing this that I have considered : Direct connection and operations on DB-Not using this because of data integrity and consistency issues.   Most of the online sites on registration do send a link to activate the site and on any further correspondence with the end user they provide information about the site and also provide the login credentials with password in clear text (as given below) Username - [email protected] Password - mysecretpassword What would you do in such a case? From a usability perspective does it make sense to send the password information in clear text or should you just avoid sending this information. I was under the impression that most of the passwords are MD5 hashed before storing in the database and hence the service provider will not have any access to clear text passwords, is this a security violation?

  This is not real, it's just a project i'm working on I've created a Hotel Management system in C# WindowsForm, it allows staff members to Add/Edit/Update Rooms,Reservation and Customers etc. Along side this Windows-form i'm creating an ASP.net WebSite where customers should be able to register and reserve rooms online. I've come to the point where i need to create some-type of membership method for this website which should correspond to the membership of the windows form. However i'm not sure what method of membership would be best suited for this, i have looked into the asp.net membership, it's what i want however it creates it's own schema and i don't know how i can relate the information to my customers table and c#windows form. I would ideally like it to resemble a real-life situation as much as possible anyway, am i going about this the wrong way? in terms of the c# windows-form what other technology would a business use to manage a system like this where they can add/edit/update there system and have a website which relates. What are my options here?

  I am creating an online experiment. It involves participants watching a video then answering a questionnaire. I would like to embed a chromeless youtube video which plays automatically on page load, does not have controls for participants to play around with, and loads the next page once the video finishes. Now the autoplay/forward to next page functions are secondary and I'm not too concerned if I can't get them working. However I am very interested in how to embed a chromeless player. I have gone to the google playground but this code already has the controls attached.   We are working on an online mobile video app. The videos we want to play on mobile phones are being generated by a server, as there can be dynamic content in the server (based on user input). Now for iPhone we would like to play the video in the best possible resolution based on the connection speed at the time of downloading the movie. This can be done using reference movies. However, because our videos are being generated on the fly, we need to generate this reference movie on the fly as well. Is there a way to generate reference movies on the fly on a Linux server using some command line tool, PHP or Java? Or on a DOS server maybe? Any help will be much appreciated.

• How to handle dynamic site localizations?

  I've got a website that is currently all in english. It is an online game, so it has a bunch of different pages with static text, as well as a lot of content in a database. I am trying to expand more globally and am gearing up to release some localizations of the site. However, I'm not sure about the best way to go about setting this up so that it'll be the easiest for me to manage and the easiest for users to use as well. Should I be storing the translated texts in a database, or should this be done in a completely different way? If it matters at all, the site is written in PHP and uses MySQL.

• Deep Copy using Reflection in an Extension Method for Silverlight?

  So I'm trying to find a generic extension method that creates a deep copy of an object using reflection, that would work in Silverlight. Deep copy using serialization is not so great in Silverlight, since it runs in partial trust and the BinaryFormatter does not exist. I also know that reflection would be faster then serialization for cloning. It would be nice to have a method that works to copy public, private and protected fields, and is recursive so that it can copy objects in objects, and that would also be able to handle collections, arrays, etc. I have searched online, and can only find shallow copy implementations using reflection. I don't understand why, since you can just use MemberwiseClone, so to me, those implementations are useless. Thank You.

  My name is Dimas and I work as a developer in a hospital. I've developed a web form with JQuery Mobile which is accessed from an Android tablet. It sends data (text and FILES) to the server (PHP) and it's saved in a MySQL database. This tablets are used by doctors that are visiting the patients in their homes. Some of these patients live in remote areas with very bad Internet connection, so I'm thinking on use HTML5 Offline feature to solve these situations. I started reading about it but I'm newbie with this technology. I've some questions: Do you think this is the best/easiest solution? If I could save the form data in a local sqlite storage when the tablet is offline, how I could synchronize it with the data in MySQL server when the tablet become online? Thanks

• Best means to store data locally when offline

  I am in the midst of writing a small program (more to experiment with vs 2010 than anything else) Despite being an experiment it has some practical use for our local athletics club. My thought was to access the DB (currently online) to download the current members and store locally on a laptop (this is a MS sql table, used to power the club's website). take the laptop to the event (yes there ARE places that don't have internet coverage), add members to that days race (also a row from a sql table (though no changes would be made to this), record results (new records in 3rd table) Once home, showered and within internet access again, upload/edit the tables as per the race results/member changes etc. So I was thinking i'd do something like write xml files locally with the data, including a field to indicate changes etc? If anyone can point me in a direction i would appreciate it...hell if anyone could tell me if this has a name, I'd appreciate it.
