• Passenger problem: "no such file to load" -- /config/environment

  I've been researching this one and found references to similar problems here and there, but none of them has led to a solution yet. I've installed passenger (2.2.11) and nginx (0.7.64) and when I start things up and hit a Rails URL, I get an error page informing me of a load error: no such file to load -- /path/to/app/config/environment From what I've found online this appears to be some sort of a user/permissions error, but I've tried all the logical fixes: I've made sure that /config/environment.rb is not owned by root, but by a webapp user. I've tried setting passenger_default_user, I've tried setting passenger_user_switching off. I've even tried setting the nginx user, though that shouldn't matter much. I've gotten some differing results, but nothing's actually worked. I'm hoping someone may have the magical combination of settings and permissions for this. I may try backing down to an earlier version of Passenger, because I've never had this issue before; it's been a little while since I set up Passenger though. Thanks for any suggestions.

  I have this code block here and i need to make sure the rankedPlayersWaitingForMatch is synchronized between threads properly. I was going to use synchronize but that i don't think will work here because of the variable being used in the if statement. I read online about final Lock lock = new ReentrantLock(); but I am a bit confused on how to use it in this case properly with the try/finally block. Can I get a quick example? • Java: Extend SimpleDateFormat with new pattern letters

  Java's SimpleDateFormat is used to format a Date object to a string. The formatter supports various pattern letters, which denote textual representation of a Date field. For example, yy is two-letter year, yyyy is four-letter year, and E is day of week. For example, A SimpleDateFormat initialized with yyyy.MM.dd G 'at' HH:mm:ss z will format a date to something like 2001.07.04 AD at 12:08:56 PDT. I would like to add some pattern letters to SimpleDateFormat. For example, want C to denote Hebrew weekday (??? ?????, ??? ???, ...). What's the right way to extend SimpleDateFormat with these new pattern letters? The only online example I could find seems somewhat complicated. I can live with formatting only, without parsing.

• Gen folder disappearing in Eclipse Android project

  I'm just getting started developing for Android and I'm running into a weird problem. First off, I'm running Eclipse for Java devs v3.5.2 with the Android 2.1 SDK installed. Basically, whenever I do just about anything the "gen" (R.java, etc.) folder will just disappear from the project. I'm seen some people online say that it was still on the drive, just gone from the project listing in Eclipse, but in my case it is literally and completely gone. The only fix I've found is that if I refresh, then try to build, it gives an error and "gen" shows up in the project view (though it's not on the disk), then delete it from within the project, then Rebuild All and it will say that it cannot find it and is recreating it. Problem is, I have to do this every single time I want to build. There's got to be a fix for this.

  Hello, I'm working on a project that requires the ability to let a user download a pdf from a static location on the server. I'm reading the instructions from this website, it's an old post and I notice they specify in an update that Microsoft's MVC framework has long since included and Action Result that allows the same functionality they discuss thus rendering it obsolete, I've looked a bit online but haven't been able to find any resources that discuss this built-in functionality.   Hello - I am currently starting to create an app for a small charity company. But Im not entirely sure how to properly learn how to code for the Android OS. I have searched online for tutorials but most stop at the same stage and only show you how to launch the "helloWorld" app. My question is this: 1) Will using solely XML be sufficient to code an app? Does it require working in partnership with java? 2) Does anyone know of any books, recommended books of course, that break everything down for you step-by-step? Cheers

• Syncing SQL Server 2008 Databases over HTTP using WCF & Sync Framework

  I've tried to get a solution for the above said question from MSDN Social and other resources from Microsoft. I was specifically looking for offline scenarios where client come online only to fetch updates from the Server. There are plenty of articles on Sync covering Sql CE but MSFT team seems to be ignoring questions from the community on Syncing with Sql Express clients. There is no standard provider for Sql Express client yet, and Sql 2008 change tracking is not supported in the latest release too. Since Sql Replication is an expensive alternative, I have to go with Sync Framework. Have anyone here in SO worked with Sync Framework, syncing through WCF endpoints? Please share code samples or sample projects.

  Hi, I have a question about drag and drop and hoping one of you already solved it. I have an online web app where I can drag and drop annotations (arrows, stars) on top of an image that sits on a DIV. Here's some things to know. 1) The image can be any size (sometimes big sometimes small) 2) The DIV of wrapper can be left aligned or centered 3) The DIV of wrapper can be fixed or auto So is there any possible solution to make it so positions of annotations are always relative to the top left corner of the image? • Is it possible to use JavaScript to break the HTML of a page?

  I've been asked at work whether it is possible to write, on purpose or by accident, JavaScript that will remove specific characters from a HTML document and thus break the HTML. An example would be adding some JavaScript that removes the < symbol in the page. I've tried searching online and I know JavaScript can replace strings, but my knowledge of the language is negligible. I've been asked to look into it as a way of hopefully addressing why a site I work on needs to have controls over who can add bespoke functionality to the page. I'm hoping it's not possible but would be grateful for the peace of mind!

• Custom constructors for models in Google App Engine (python)

  I'm getting back to programming for Google App Engine and I've found, in old, unused code, instances in which I wrote constructors for models. It seems like a good idea, but there's no mention of it online and I can't test to see if it works. Here's a contrived example, with no error-checking, etc.: class Dog(db.Model): name = db.StringProperty(required=True) breeds = db.StringListProperty() age = db.IntegerProperty(default=0) def __init__(self, name, breed_list, **kwargs): db.Model.__init__(**kwargs) self.name = name self.breeds = breed_list.split() rufus = Dog('Rufus', 'spaniel terrier labrador') rufus.put() The **kwargs are passed on to the Model constructor in case the model is constructed with a specified parent or key_name, or in case other properties (like age) are specified. This constructor differs from the default in that it requires that a name and breed_list be specified (although it can't ensure that they're strings), and it parses breed_list in a way that the default constructor could not. Is this a legitimate form of instantiation, or should I just use functions or static/class methods? And if it works, why aren't custom constructors used more often?

  My app offers the user the opportunity to put an event in his native calendar. For that, I refer to an online webcal:// URL. Since the underlying .ics file is quite big (containing quite a few events), it sometimes (also depending on the network performance)takes a while before the "Do you want to subscribe"-dialog sequence kicks in. I would like to give the user some feedback in the mean time, like a spinner, or a changing graphic, for him to know that something is going to happen. Question: how does my app know, that the "Do you want to subscribe"-dialog has been shown, and that the user has chosen either a Cancel of OK button in that dialog, so I can stop the spinner?

  I have taken a job selling a customized "online workplace management application." Our clients' businesses work around the application. Our clients track their time (which is how they get paid), finances and work documents through the application we provide and give their clients access to their interests throught the application. Our clients range from 2 users to 500 users. Each user probably processes 200 files per year and generates a fee for each file in the range of $500-$2500 per file. The application has been refined over a period of years and has cost around a million to develop. Does anyone know what range something like this sells for (source code, add-ons such as support and hosting)? I am trying to wrap my head around it as my background is not in software development.

I was wondering what is the correct way to consume a Web Service from WPF MVVM app. So far, I have created a DataAccess interface and a class that implements this interface. This would serve as a facade / proxy to the web service. The ViewModel gets a reference to this class as the constructor parameter so it can make any calls to get/set data, in this case it will be a Web service call. I would appreciate if you can guide me with some hints and / or direct me to some online resource.

• Dynamic Button Layout without hard coding positions

  I would like to implement a view (it will actually be going into the footer of a UITableView) that implements 1-3 buttons. I would like the layout of these buttons (and the size of the buttons themselves) to change depending on which ones are showing. An example of almost the exact behavior I would want is at the bottom of the Info screen in the Contacts application when you are looking at a specific contact ("Add to Favorites" disappears when it is clicked, and the other buttons expand to take up the available space in a nice animation). As I'm running through the different layout scenarios, I'm hard coding all these values and I just think... "this is NOT the way I'm supposed to be doing this." It even APPEARS that Interface Builder has some features that may do this for me in the ruler tab, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how they work (if they work) on the phone. Does anyone have any suggestions, or a tutorial online that I could look at to point me in the right direction? Thanks much.

  There are examples online with web select boxes that have a huge list of countries and that probably will be good enough for me to use. However, by Murphy's law, there's bound to be some random country that someone is from and isn't on my list (and probably someone else also ran into this and has updated their local list). Also, when new countries are added, I won't know about it. Basically, I feel it's better practice and a better smell if there is some centralized list of country names that I can use / trust. (also it could set/follow standards for exact namings "United St..." vs "USA" etc.) I would prefer a solution that isn't IIS specific if possible

  I am trying to develop an app to retrieve print data, edit its content and then print the data. I am using RedMon for that purpose. But all the tutorials I have seen online as of now relates to storing the data into a PDF using RedMon. I want to be able to configure RedMon on a windows platform such that it writes the entire print data(the data that is bound to appear on the printing paper) as it is into a .txt file or maybe provide directly as an input to the java app that I have made. I have been unsuccessful in finding a solution for this till now. Is this achievable?

  This question is not about 'best' barcode library recommendation, we use various products on different platforms, and need a simple way to verify if a given barcode is correct (according to its specification). There are some free online bar code generators in the Internet, and I found many differences between their output and our library output regarding graphics and text field below the code. Now I am not sure which one is wrong, and before filing bug report I want to make sure how the correct barcode should look like. We mainly need Code128 and UCC/EAN-128 with A/B/C subcodes. • Whats the best way to deal with backups for my php/mysql application

  I'm creating php application for my client and now thinking what would be the best way to do backups, automatically if possible? I don't have much experience in this area and in case something goes wrong, or if I need to migrate, I would like to have fast way of getting it all back online. I understand "something goes wrong" is a very wide term, but lets say that someone hacks my site and wipes out database and all the files. My app. is written in php/mysql and I got access to cpanel (hosted with justhost.com if that makes any difference :). I used Joomla and it has JoomlaPack that does complete backup almost automatically and in case site fails, its easy to revert, or migrate if necessary. Is there anything like that for my configuration that would make reverting/migration, easy?
