• My first time in the gambling industry

  I am a Java enterprise developer with almost 3 years of professional experience. Soon i am going to have a face to face interview with a company in the gambling industry. I already did successfully a phone screening and now for the personal interview i suppose they will ask me about some kind of white board problem or system design task. I think i am in the right place to ask about this, and would appreciate a lot if someone would give me some tips or share something related to his own experience. The things i am more interested in regarding my interview are: What are the most common challenges for programmers, in this industry? Any idea or suggestion on a white board problem they may ask me? Could you point me to some links where i can find information on the topic or sample problems in this industry?. I personally find this question very interesting not just for me. • Why CFOs Should Care About Big Data

  The topic of “big data” clearly has reached a tipping point in 2012.  With plenty of coverage over the past few years in the IT press, we are now starting to see the topic of “big data” covered in mainstream business press, including a cover story in the October 2012 issue of the Harvard Business Review.  To help customers understand the challenges of managing “big data” as well as the opportunities that can be created by leveraging “big data”, Oracle has recently run and published the results of a customer survey, as well as white papers and articles on this topic.  Most recently, we commissioned a white paper titled “Mastering Big Data: CFO Strategies to Transform Insight into Opportunity”. The premise here is that “big data” is not just a topic that CIOs should pay attention to, but one that CFOs should understand and take advantage of as well.  Clearly, whoever masters the art and science of big data will be positioned for competitive advantage in their industries or markets.  That’s why smart CFOs are taking control of big data and business analytics projects, not just to uncover new ways to drive growth in a slowing global economy, but also to be a catalyst for change in the enterprise.  With an increasing number of CFOs now responsible for overseeing IT investments and providing strategic insight to the board, CFOs will be increasingly called upon to take a leadership role in assessing the value of “big data” initiatives, building on their traditional skills in reporting and helping managers analyze data to support decision making. • Library Organization in .NET

  I've written a .NET bitwise operations library as part of my projects (stuff ranging from get MSB set to some more complicated bitwise transformations) and I mean to release it as free software. I'm a bit confused about a design aspect of the library, though. Many of the methods/transformations in the library come with different endianness. A simple example is a getBitAt method that regards index 0 as the least significant bit, or the most significant bit, depending on the version used. In practice, I've found that using separate functions for different endianness results in much more comprehensible and reusable code than assuming all operations are little-endian or something. I'm really stumped regarding how best to package the library. Should I have methods that have LE and BE versions take an enum parameter in their signature, e.g. Endianness.Little, Endianness.Big? Should I have different static classes with identically named methods? such as MSB.GetBit and LSB.GetBit On a much wider note, is there a standard I could use in cases like this? Some guide? Is my design issue trivial? I have a perfectionist bent, and I sometimes get stuck on tricky design issues like this... Note: I've sort of realized I'm using endianness somewhat colloquially to refer to the order/place value of digital component parts (be they bits, bytes, or words) in a larger whole, in any setting. I'm not talking about machine-level endianness or serial transmission endianness. Just about place-value semantics in general. So there isn't a context of targeting different machines/transmission techniques or something.

• VNC grey screen and start on boot 12.04

  I have 12.04 LTS installed and I am trying to get VNC to work. I want to be able to connect to existing sessions, and have it start on boot. I followed this guide and have left a comment to try and fix my problems but no dice. I have also tried all solutions I have found on google, including the one here, but I could not get it to work (I am missing something easy I am sure). When I connect to the VNC session I get a grey screen with three checkboxes: Accept clipboard from viewers Send clipboard to viewers Send primary selection to viewers Here is my xstartup: #!/bin/sh # Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop: unset SESSION_MANAGER # exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc gnome-session -session=gnome-classic & [ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup [ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources xsetroot -solid grey vncconfig -iconic & #x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" & #x-window-manager & I have also edited my to include: /usr/bin/vncserver -geometry 1024x768 It does not start on boot, but when I run the command it starts, but I get the grey screen. • "Oracle Coherence 3.5" Book - My Humble Review

    After reviewing the book in more detail I say again that it is a great guide for sure. Lots of important concepts that sometimes can be somewhat confusing are deeply reviewed, including all types of caching schemes and backing maps, and the cache topologies with their corresponding performances and very useful "When to use it?" sections. Some functionalities that are very desirable or used a lot are reviewed with examples and best practices of implementation, including: Data affinity Querying Pagination Indexes Aggregations Event processing, listening and triggering Data persistence Security Regarding the networking and architecture topics, Coherence*Extend is exhaustively reviewed, including C++ and .NET clients, with very good tips and examples, even including source codes. Personally, I am also glad to see that the address providers (<address-provider> tag), new feature in Coherence 3.5 which is a way to programmatically provide well-known addresses in order to connect to the cluster, is mentioned on the book, because it provides new functionalities to satisfy some special configuration requirements for example: Provide a way to switch extend nodes in cases of failure Implement custom load balancing algorithms and/or dynamic discovery of TCP/IP connection acceptors Dynamically assign TCP address and port settings when binding to a server socket Another very interesting and useful section is the "Coherent Bank Sample Application", which is a great tutorial, useful to understand how Coherence interacts with third party products establishing a clear integration with them, including the use of non-Oracle products like MS Visual Studio.

• Welcome to the newly merged JCP EC!

  As part of the JCP.Next effort, the second JSR as part of the JCP program reforms, JSR 355, Executive Committee (EC) Merge, will take effect on Tuesday as JCP 2.9. The first in the effort was JSR 348, which took effect as JCP 2.8 in October 2011. EC members guide the evolution of the Java technologies by approving and voting on all technology proposals (Java Specification Requests, or JSRs). They are also responsible for defining the JCP's rules of governance and the legal agreement between members and the organization. They provide guidance to the Program Management Office (PMO) and they represent the interests of the JCP to the broader community. Starting on Tuesday, 13 November, JCP 2.9 is in effect, and the EC is merged from two ECs -- one representing Java SE/EE and one representing Java ME -- to one merged EC. IBM and Oracle each gave up one of their two seats (one per EC) and the terms expired for four members who did not run for re-election: AT&T, Deutsch Telekom, Siemens and Vodafone. All four remain JCP members. In addition, the seat occupied by RIM was forfeited due to lack of participation in October 2012. The JCP values the organizations and representatives for their contribution to the JCP EC, and looks forward to their continued participation in the JCP Program. The complete listing of the EC, 24 members total at the moment, is now available. • How to highlight non-rectangular hotspots?

  So my question is highly related to Creating non-rectangular hotspots and detecting clicks. Yet again, I've irregular hot-spots (think the game Risk). So basically, we can detect clicks on these hot-spots easily using color key mapping as discussed in above question which I don't have any problems implementing (which is also covered here in details). The problem is about highlighting these irreguar hotspots. So let me explain the question a bit more - the above color key mapping guide uses this as a world map: Then the author color-maps the imaginary countries: Now we can now detect the country the pointer is over. In the same article author mentions outlining countries on mouse-over. Though to get the effect, he creates unique border assets for each country - like: For the game I'm working on I'm using the same color-key mapping idea to detect hot-spots, but I didn't like the way of highlighting hot-spots. Coloring all the hot-spots is already a time-consuming job for me - as I have 25+ hot-spots for each map. Further, the need to have 25 unique border/highlight asset per hot-spot doesn't sound right. Anyone have a better idea/suggestion on highlighting these hot-spots?

• Basic Google Analytics Click Tracking and/or Overview

  This is a really basic Google Analytics question. Apologies in advance if it's not appropriate here, but I've had a lot of luck on Stack Overflow and this seems like the best Stack Exchange site for a question like this. I'm trying to understand how Google Analytics goals work, or if they're the right feature to be using for my situation. Most of the documentation I find online refers to the old version of the UI, not the new one. I have a website, let's call is blog.example.com. This website drives traffic to an ecommerce store, let's call that store.example2.com. I want to get reports on which links from blog.example.com are being clicked through leading to store.example2.com. How do you do this in Google analytics? Are goals the right area to be looking? Do I setup the goals on store.example2.com or blog.example.com? Or both? Is there any canonical user guide (free or paid) that covers how this works? I'm a competent programmer, but it's years since I dealt with conversion tracking on any serious level, and we've progressed well beyond my frozen caveman pixel tracking knowledge. Thanks in advance

What will the Oracle Solaris team have to say? Will the Oracle Linux team have any surprises? And what about Oracle hardware? For my part, I'll be one of the lizards at the OTN Lounge with the OTN crew, handing out t-shirts to system admins and developers, or anyone who is willing to impersonate one. I understand, not everyone can have the raw animal magnetism of a sysadmin, or the debonair sophistication of a C++ developer, so some of you have no choice but to pretend. I won't judge. • Battery not recognized on my laptop (and it recognizes my laptop as a desktop)

  I have installed Ubuntu (both 10.10 and 11.04 pre-release) on my laptop but my battery is not recognized and it is detected as a desktop system rather than a laptop. I have tried to get the output of cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root Nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find. Is there any way to change the configuration file(s) that detect the internal hardware of the computer. The /proc directory is a temporary RAM directory afaik. Is there a directory where that data is stored permanently and where the RAM reads if you know what I mean? Thanks in advance. AZorin This issue has been reported as bug #764513.

• Connecting to wireless networks from command line

  I need to write a shell script which connects to one of the two available wi-fi connections. One is a un secure connection and the other is secure connection. My question has 2 parts- 1.How to connect to the un-secure (un-encrypted and no password required) connection from command line (or by executing a shell script) when I'm connected to the secure connection? I followed the steps in http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-troubleshoot-wireless-network-connection-in-ubuntu.html for in-secure connection. I put all the commands in a script and executed it (I made sure that interface name and essid are correct) - sudo dhclient -r wlan0 - sudo ifconfig wlan0 up - sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "UAPublic" - sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed - sudo dhclient wlan0 But nothing happens - I'm not disconnected from the current network and connected to the new one 2.When I want to connect to the secure wi-fi network, I understand from http://askubuntu.com/a/138476/70665 that I need to use wpa_supplicant. But I enter a lot of details in the interface when I connect via UI security : wpa and wpa2 enterprise Authentication : PEAP CA certificate : Equifax... PEAP version : automatic inner authentication : MSCHAPv2 username : password : How to use wpa_supplicant to mention all these details in the command line? The conf file network={ ssid="ssid_name" psk="password" } doesn't work for me.
