• Creating, using and managing XML component dictionaries quick tutorials

  XML Component Dictionary capabilities are provided in conjunction with the CAM Editor toolset.  These dictionaries accelerate the development of consistent XML information exchanges using standard sets of dictionary components. The quick tutorials are aimed at showing the 'how to' of the basic capabilities to jump start use of XML dictionaries with the CAM Editor. The collection of dictionary tutorials videos run for a total of approximately 20 minutes.  Each video can be reviewed individually also. Learn how to use the dictionary functions to create dictionaries by harvesting data model components from existing XSD schema, SQL database table schema, or simple Excel / Open Office spreadsheets with tables of components listed.Also included are tips and functions relating to use of NIEM exchange development, IEPD and EIEM techniques.These videos should be viewed in conjunction with reviewing the overall concepts and techniques described in the companion video on the CAM Editor and Dictionaries overview.  The approach is aligned with OASIS and Core Components Technical Specification (CCTS) standards specifications for XML components and dictionaries.Dictionary collections can be stored locally on the file system, or local network, or collaboratively on the web or cloud deployment, or can be shared and managed securely using the Oracle Enterprise Repository (OER) tool.   What do you do if the old key your landlord gave you is poor fit for your apartment’s lock? If you’re the geeky sort, you build a wireless unlocking module to do the work for you. Instructables user Rybitski writes: The key to my apartment never worked quite right because it is a copy of a copy of a copy. I am fairly certain that the dead bolt is original to the building and the property manager seems to have lost the original key years ago. As a result unlocking the door was always a pain. Changing the lock wasn’t an option, but eliminating the need to use a key was. To that end, he built the device seen in the video above. • We are moving an Access based corporate front-end into a Web-based App

  We have an enterprise application with a front end written in Microsoft Access 2003 that has evolved over the past 6 years. The back end data, and a fair amount of back-end logic is contained within several Microsoft SQL Server databases. This front end app consists of around 180 forms, and over 120,000 lines of code, and interacts with VB.Net DLLs that support various critical functions used by our sales force. The current system makes use of 3 monitors to display various information; the Access app uses COM+ to control Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer for various purposes. The Access front end sometimes occupies 2 screens, automatically resizing itself based on Windows API-reported screen dimensions. The app also uses a Google map to present data to our agents, and allows two-way interactivity with the map through COM+ connectivity to JavaScript contained in the Google map. At the urging of senior management, we are looking to completely rewrite this application using some web-based technology, such as ASP.Net or perhaps a LAMP stack (the thinking with the LAMP stack thing is "free" is pretty cheap). We want to move to a web-based app so we can eliminate the dependency on our physical location for hiring new sales force members. Currently, our main office is full to capacity, and we need to continue growing the company. Does anyone have any thoughts on what would be the best technology to use for a web-based app of this magnitude? Keeping in mind the app is dependent on back-end services on our existing infrastructure. The app handles financial data and personal customer data, among other things. Interesting reading, and has some valid points, but our C.O.O. and contracted Software Architect are pushing for a full web-based app, not a .Net Windows App]

  A look at the documentation for "Typed Measures" shows:"Using format strings, you can format the values (cell contents) of Essbase database members in numeric type measures so that they appear, for query purposes, as text, dates, or other types of predefined values. The resultant display value is the cell’s formatted value (FORMATTED_VALUE property in MDX). The underlying real value is numeric, and this value is unaffected by the associated formatted value."To actually switch ON the use of typed measures in general, you need to navigate to the outline properties: open outline select properties change "Typed Measures enable" to TRUE (click to enlarge) As an example, I created two additional members in the ASOSamp outline. - A member "delta Price" in the Measures (Accounts) Dimension with the Formula: ([Original Price],[Curr_year])-([Original Price],[Prev_year])This is equivalent to the Variance Formula used in the "Years" Dimension. - A member "Var_Quickview" in the "Years" Dimension with the same formula as the "Variance" Member.This will be used to simply display a second cell with the same underlying value as Variance - but formatted using Format String hence enabling BOTH in the same report. • Choosing open source vs. proprietary CMS

  Hi- I've been tasked with redesigning a website for a small academic library. While only in charge of the site for 6 months, we've been maintaining static html pages edited in Dreamweaver for years. Last count of our total pages is around 400. Our university is going with an enterprise level solution called Sitefinity, although we maintain our own domain and are responsible to maintain our own presense. Some background-my library has a couple Microsoft IIS servers on which this static html site has been running. I'm advocating for the implementation of a CMS while doing this redesign. The problem is I'm basically the lone webmaster so I have no one to agree or disagree with my choice. There are also only 1-2 content editors right know for the site but a CMS could change that factor. I would like to use the functionality of having servers that run .NET and MS SQL but am more experience setting up and maintaining open source software like Wordpress or Drupal on web hosts. My main concern is choosing a CMS that will be easy to update / maintain / deal with upgrades (i.e., support) in case I'm not there in the future. So I'm wondering how to factor in the open source CMS vs. a relatively inexpensive commercial CMS decision and whether choosing PHP/MySQL vs. ASP.net framework for development environment will play into my decision.   I was discussing a interesting design problem with a colleague of mine Niall (his blog) on the topic of how to cancel an inflight SOA Composite process.  Obviously one way to do this is to cancel the process from enterprise Manager ( http://hostort/em ) , however we were thinking this isnt a “user friendly” way of doing this.. If you look at Nialls blog you’ll see he’s highlighted a number of different APIs which enable you the ability to manipulate the SCA instance, e.g. Code Snippet to purge (delete) an instance How to determine the instanceId from a composite_sensor_value using the “composite_sensor_value” table How to determine a BPEL Process status using the cube_instance table   Now all of these require that you know the instanceId of your SOA Composite, how does one find this out? Well the easiest way of doing this is to create a composite sensor on the SCA component. A composite sensor is simply a way of publishing a piece of business data as part of your composite. The magic here is that you can later query composites based on this value. So a good best practice is that for any composites you create consider publishing a composite sensor value using a primary key of some sort , e.g. orderId, that way if you need to manipulate/query composites you can easily look up the instanceId using the sensorid.   For information on how to create a composite Sensor id see this documentation link

• November 2012 Chicago IT Architects Group Meeting Recap

  So the year is coming to an end.  A hearty few came out two days before Thanksgiving to discuss adopting agile in the enterprise.  While Norm Murrin claimed to be nervous about talking in front of a group your wouldn’t have known by his presentation.  He really made a topic that has always been hard to relate very personal.  This lead to some great discussion.  I came out of looking for ways to investigate agile further.  His presentation can be found here. • Find non-ascii characters from a UTF-8 string

  I need to find the non-ASCII characters from a UTF-8 string. my understanding: UTF-8 is a superset of character encoding in which 0-127 are ascii characters. So if in a UTF-8 string , a characters value is Not between 0-127, then it is not a ascii character , right? Please correct me if i'm wrong here. On the above understanding i have written following code in C : Note: I'm using the Ubuntu gcc compiler to run C code utf-string is xvab c long i; char arr[] = "xvab c"; printf("length : %lu \n", sizeof(arr)); for(i=0; i<sizeof(arr); i++){ char ch = arr[i]; if (isascii(ch)) printf("Ascii character %c\n", ch); else printf("Not ascii character %c\n", ch); } Which prints the output like: length : 9 Ascii character x Not ascii character Not ascii character ? Correct answer for the xvab c is 1 ...i.e it has only 1 non-ascii character , but in above output it is coming as 3 (times Not ascii character). How can i find the non-ascii character from UTF-8 string, correctly. Please guide on the subject.

• Oracle VM Virtualbox 4.0 extension packs

  Some people have asked what this new extension pack is in Oracle VM Virtualbox 4.0 and how it's different from 3.2 and earlier releases. The extension pack is a restructuring of how Oracle VM VirtualBox is installed. Please take a look at http://virtualbox.org and read up on what the product install looked like prior to 4.0, you'll see the following : There were 2 versions to download : - Oracle VM VirtualBox (open source edition) OSE - download of the source tarball with a GPL license + compile needed to run. - Oracle VM VirtualBox PUEL (personal use/eval license) - download of an installable binary with a number of additional non-gpl license drivers, usb2, sata, pxe boot for e1000, vrdp server etc., all built in to the install. This contained the OSE edition + additional drivers with the installer. Customers could purchase an enterprise software license for the latter version. To make it easier to build and release additional drivers, they have been separated out and are now installed through an "extension pack" starting with Oracle VirtualBox version 4. This extension pack is still licensed the same way as in every prior version, via a PUEL license or with the ability to purchase a commercial license. It is now also possible for other companies or users that want to add extensions to do so by creating a similar extension pack -- and there's no need to do a new release of the entire product to do so. So it's a more flexible structure for installing VirtualBox and drivers and allows for more modular additions. The source code of Oracle VM Virtualbox is, of course, still available just like in 3.x, for 4.0. Like 3.x, not for the additional drivers which are now in the extension pack.

• Trying to compile from source newest apache with newest openssl

  I need to install apache 2.4.10 using openssl 1.0.1i. I would prefer to just use aptitude, but unfortunately the versions I need aren't available yet. If anyone knows how to fix the linker problem (or what I think is a linker problem), or knows of a better way to tell apache to use a newer openssl, it would be greatly appreciated; I've got apache 1.0.1i working otherwise.

• USB Ports In Wrong Mode, How To Use usbmodeswitch?

  I haven't had access to my USB ports as media devices for a couple days now. I've been reading and researching everything I can find but I can't find a good guide for usbmodeswtich or usbms that I can decipher. The USB's are fine for power, but won't support my android phone as a media device, which is killing me because I use adb everyday, and won't support my plug and play mouse any longer. Not sure what caused the switch, though I think it may be related to the suspend issue I've read about, but the solutions in those threads I read also didn't work. Below is my system information and details.   The ICAM architecture has become the predominant security architecture for government organizations.  A growing number of federal, state, and local organizations are in various stages of using Oracle ICAM solutions.  The relevance of ICAM has clearly extended beyond the Federal ICAM mandates to any government program that must enable standards based interoperability like health exchanges and public safety.  The state government endorsed version of ICAM was just released with the NASCIO SICAM Roadmap.
