• What tools and knowledge do I need to create an application which generates bespoke automated e-mails? [on hold]

  I'd like some suggestions as to how to best go about creating an application which can generate bespoke automated e-mails- i.e. send a personalized reply to a particular individual, interpreting the context of the message as intelligently as possible... (This is perhaps too big a question to be under one title?) What would be a good starting point? What concepts do I need to know? I'd imagine that the program needs to be able trawl through e-mails as and when they come in, and search for keywords in e-mail content, in order to write an appropriate reply. So there needs to be some form of automated response embedded in the code. Machine learning and databases come to mind here, as I'm aware that google incorporates machine learning already in gmail etc. It is quite tricky to google the above topic, and find the perfect tutorial. But there are some interesting articles and papers out there: Machine Learning in Automated Text Categorization (2002) by Fabrizio Sebastiani , Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche However, this is not exactly a quick start guide. I intend to add to this question, and no doubt other questions will spark off this one. I look forward to suggestions.

• Interaction between two Clouds

  I have setup the Cloud-A with 1 - [CLC+CC] and 2 - [NC] computers. I have another Cloud-B with same configuration. [using the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud] Both of them working fine individually, in the same LAN. Now if I want to add the NC of Cloud-A to CC of Cloud-B, [in case the resources of Cloud-B are exhausted] how can I make it possible ? I guess this calls for the interoperability stuff... Could you please explain what happens exactly when we ask for instance, the direct interaction happens between the client and NC or it goes through the CLC and CC ? What I want to say is, say there are multiple cloud providers. A user is subscribed to any one of them, say Cloud-A for IaaS. As the requirements are dynamic, all the resources of Cloud-A may get exhausted. There may be another Cloud-B which can provide the services but that Cloud-A can't ask the client to go for Cloud-B. So if it is possible to have some co-ordination between this two providers to share resources mutually, making client fully unaware of whats going on in the background....? Please reply.. • How to Structure a Trinary state in DB and Application

  How should I structure, in the DB especially, but also in the application, a trinary state? For instance, I have user feedback records which need to be reviewed before they are presented to the general public. This means a feedback reviewer must see the unreviewed feedback, then approve or reject them. I can think of a couple ways to represent this: Two boolean flags: Seen/Unseen and Approved/Rejected. This is the simplest and probably the smallest database solution (presumably boolean fields are simple bits). The downside is that there are really only three states I care about (unseen/approved/rejected) and this creates four states, including one I don't care about (a record which is seen but not approved or rejected is essentially unseen). String column in the DB with constants/enum in application. Using Rating::APPROVED_STATE within the application and letting it equal whatever it wants in the DB. This is a larger column in the db and I'm concerned about doing string comparisons whenever I need these records. Perhaps mitigatable with an index? Single boolean column, but allow nulls. A true is approved, a false is rejected. A null is unseen. Not sure the pros/cons of this solution. What are the rules I should use to guide my choice? I'm already thinking in terms of DB size and the cost of finding records based on state, as well as the readability of code the ends up using this structure.

• Should I learn the easier framework as a start? [closed]

  I've been a programmer for 2 years. I learned Java SE, C from college and learned Cobol from the workplace. I've noticed that there is a hype about framework and I actually don't know what is a framework. It is so cool that my colleague once said you cannot find a new job without knowing something like struct spring hibernate. And we should know Java EE too because it was aimed for enterprise application. I've never code something such as server-client web application, and I think I need to try it out. But which language should I code in? I can't decide between the following 2: 1) Java. It is heavily used by many company so I could easily reuse the experience gained. But Java and its related framework are pretty heavy (for the machine and operation). It is on-demand. 2) ROR. It is cool. The syntax of ruby is simple. I can get a better hand on it. And maybe I can learn the concept easily and possibly correctly. However, not much company here would use it. All the job ads are about J2EE/C#. Should I learn the easy one or the difficult one? Not to mention there are a lot of frameworks out there for Java, which makes the decision much more difficult.

• How to create shared home directories across multiple computers?

  I know there are ways to share a folder across computers making it easy to move files. But I was wondering how one would setup a single login which lets you access the same files regardless of which machine you login on? What I would like is something similar to something you would see in a college campus where students login on machines in the lab and see their files regardless of which machine they use. I know there are server involved here. I have a need to create this on a smaller scale where we have a few computers available (and one of these could act as the server if needed and host the files) that every one shares. Note, the specific install of software might be different on each computer but the login and OS are the same. Since some computers have additional capability that our group members will need to use at rotating schedules (software licenses or hardware components, etc.). I have not done this before, so I would appreciate detailed instructions if possible or a reference to a guide that describes this. Thanks in advance.

• In virtualbox, I can't access the dvd drive to install a guest host

  I have installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu Server 12.04 and VirtualBox 4.3. I have set up a VM called "MediaServer" and tried to start it. I then get the following error: Cannot open host device '/dev/sr0' for readonly access. Check the permissions of that device ('/bin/ls -l /dev/sr0'): Most probably you need to be member of the device group. Make sure that you logout/login after changing the group settings of the current user (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED) I have looked all over the Internet and have been unable to find a solution. Using Webmin, I tried changing the group settings so that my user name was in the "vboxusers" group, but that did not work either. I tried various other changes in group settings and none of them worked. Also, I tried rebooting the server after the changes and that didn't work either. I have been following a guide on how to set up an Ubuntu server from the website "linuxhomeserverguide.com" and when it came to the section where you could finally set up your first virtual machine, I am stumped. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. Thanks in advance.

Shortly after the official announcement on April 15th we delivered the natively built suite on Silverlight 4 to empower our clients with the advantages of the new capabilities for developing robust enterprise applications. The suite features support for both Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and Microsoft SharePoint 2010. With Q1 2010 SP1 we have delivered installations for both Silverlight 3 and Silverlight 4. • How To Figure Out Your PC’s Host Name From the Command Prompt

  If you’re doing any work with networking, you probably need to know the name of your computer. Rather than diving into Control Panel, there’s a really simple way to do this from the command prompt. Note: If you haven’t already, be sure to read our complete guide to networking Windows 7 with XP and Vista. To see the hostname… all you have to do is type hostname at the command prompt. Go figure, eh? The same thing works in Linux or OS X, though you can see that most of the time the hostname is part of the prompt anyway. Note: you can also change the hostname by simply typing “hostname <newhostname>”. Of course, the easiest way to see your computer name in Windows is to just hit the Win+Break key combination, which will pop up the System pane from Control Panel.   If you want to change it instead, you can always change your computer name easily through Control Panel.   I am a student of computer engineering. I have never done any programming before, and as you can understand, I don't know how to study it or how to make my own programs. My English is weak [edited for clarity - ed], and so if you don't like the choices I list, please feel free to provide others. How should I study? How should I learn programming languages? Study completely from a book. Don't study from a book, just try writing code. A mix of the two; study from a book, then try writing code. Study half the book, then write the code by hand on paper. Listed to the teacher, then try to solve general problems (those not from any specific chapter). I have send that question to stackoverflow before when I am at first year. Now, I want to construct webpage to guide fresh students by giving advise of yours and mines.Maybe, you wonder Why I want to construct webpage , I just want help the other student. • Working with the ADF DVT Map Component

  The map component provided by the ADF Faces DVT set of components is one that we are always ending up using in key demos - simply because it is so nice looking, but also because it is quite simple to use. So in case you need to show some geographical data, or if you just want to impress your manager, here is a little video that shows you how to create two types of maps. The first one is a color themed map - where you show different states with different colors based on the value of some data point there. The other is a point theme - basically showing specific locations on the map. For both cases I'm using the Oracle provided mapviewer instance at http://elocation.oracle.com/mapviewer. You can find more information about using the map component in the Web User Interface Developer's Guide here and in the tag doc and components demo. • Good books or tutorials on building projects without an IDE?

  While I'm certainly under no illusions that building software without an IDE is possible, I don't actually know much about doing it well. I've been using graphical tools like Visual Studio or Code::Blocks so long that I'm pretty well lost without them. And that really stinks when I want to change environments or languages. I couldn't really do anything in D until someone made a Visual Studio plugin, and now that I'm trying to do more development on Mac, I can't use D again because the XCode plugins don't work. I'm sick of being lost when I see a .make file and having no idea what I'm supposed to do with a folder full of source files. People can't be compiling them one by one using the console and then linking them one by one. You'd spend more time typing file names than code. So what are the automation and productivity tools of the non-IDE user? How do you manage a project when you're writing all the code in emacs or vim or nano or whatever? I would love it if there was a book or a guide online that spells some of this out.

• How to highlight non-rectengular hotspots?

  So my question is highly related to Creating non-rectangular hotspots and detecting clicks. Yet again, I've irregular hot-spots (think the game Risk). So basically, we can detect clicks on these hot-spots easily using color key mapping as discussed in above question which I don't have any problems implementing (which is also covered here in details). The problem is about highlighting these irreguar hotspots. So let me explain the question a bit more - the above color key mapping guide uses this as a world map; then the author color-maps the imaginary countries; which we can now detect the country the pointer is over. In the same article author mentions outlining countries on mouse-over; though to get the effect, he creates unique border assets for each country - like; So for the game I'm working on I'm using the same color-key mapping idea to detect hot-spots, but I didn't like the way of highlighting hot-spots. Coloring all the hot-spots is already a great work for me - as I've 25+ hot-spots for each map - further more the need to have 25 unique border/highlight asset per hot-spot doesn't sound right. Anyone have a better idea/suggestion on highlighting these hot-spots?

• Oracle E-Business Products New Search Helpers for Guided Resolution of Customer Issues

  Oracle E-Business Proactive Support has created many new guided resolution documents that you may find helpful in resolving issues in your EBS applications.  These new documents are called “Search Helpers” and they guide you through your issue to a solution.  They are meant to be an easy and fast method to finding a relevant, complete solution. Hundreds of notes and service requests were reviewed and the best solutions to these known issues were selected.  For some issues, notes were updated to better clarify the solution.  In other cases, if a note with a solution did not already exist, one was created. You start the process by selecting the scenario you have encountered.  You may have received an error message, or there may be a particular area of the application in which you have encountered an issue.  Based on your selection of the issue, the Search Helper will present one or more additional possible symptoms.  When you have selected from both of these two sections, you are then presented with one or more articles known to have fully solved this issue in the past.  Several EBS products have produced Search Helpers documents.  Take a look at Doc ID 1501724.1 for an index of the current EBS Search Helpers.  Here is an example of a Search Helper from the Receivables Transactions area: After selecting the Functional Area of "Entering / Updating Transactions" a list of Known Symptoms is presented: And, when "Transaction numbers are not in sequence" is selected, a solution link is provided for Document ID 197212.1: How To Setup Gapless Document Sequencing in Receivables. • Reformatting and version control

  Code formatting matters. Even indentation matters. And consistency is more important than minor improvements. But projects usually don't have a clear, complete, verifiable and enforced style guide from day 1, and major improvements may arrive any day. Maybe you find that SELECT id, name, address FROM persons JOIN addresses ON persons.id = addresses.person_id; could be better written as / is better written than SELECT persons.id, persons.name, addresses.address FROM persons JOIN addresses ON persons.id = addresses.person_id; while working on adding more columns to the query. Maybe this is the most complex of all four queries in your code, or a trivial query among thousands. No matter how difficult the transition, you decide it's worth it. But how do you track code changes across major formatting changes? You could just give up and say "this is the point where we start again", or you could reformat all queries in the entire repository history. If you're using a distributed version control system like Git you can revert to the first commit ever, and reformat your way from there to the current state. But it's a lot of work, and everyone else would have to pause work (or be prepared for the mother of all merges) while it's going on. Is there a better way to change history which gives the best of all results: Same style in all commits Minimal merge work ? To clarify, this is not about best practices when starting the project, but rather what should be done when a large refactoring has been deemed a Good Thing™ but you still want a traceable history? Never rewriting history is great if it's the only way to ensure that your versions always work the same, but what about the developer benefits of a clean rewrite? Especially if you have ways (tests, syntax definitions or an identical binary after compilation) to ensure that the rewritten version works exactly the same way as the original?
