• Can I flash a PCI-E device's Firmware in a VM if the VM has exclusive IOMMU access?

  I have a PCI-E Dell Perc 6/i RAID card that I'd like to flash with the latest firmware. Apparently I need either a Redhat / Centos OS or Windows in order to flash the firmware, but I have a VMWare 5.0.1 ESX hypervisor installed on the box and a CentOS guest OS. My motherboard support IOMMU and I have successfully used VMWare's PCI Passthrough feature to give VMs exclusive access to a PCI-E device. Is it safe to flash the firmware of a PCI-E device if that device is passed through to a single VM using the passthrough feature of VMware? Or should I boot one of the supported OSes directly on the bare metal?

• CORS Fails on CloudFront Distribution with Nginx Origin

  I have a CloudFront distribution set up with an Nginx server as the origin (a Media Temple DV server, to be specific). I enabled the Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * header so fonts will work in Firefox. However, Firefox throws a CORS error for fonts loaded from this CloudFront/Nginx distribution. I created another CloudFront distribution, this time with an Apache server as the origin, and set Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * also. Firefox displays fonts from this origin without issue.   I'm trying to convert the first page of a PDF to a JPG. I'm pretty sure I got this to work with certain PDFs, but is it really possible that certain PDFs are made incorrectly and cannot be converted?   According to the HDFS Architecture page HDFS was designed for "streaming data access". I'm not sure what that means exactly, but would guess it means an operation like seek is either disabled or has sub-optimal performance. Would this be correct? I'm interested in using HDFS for storing audio/video files that need to be streamed to browser clients. Most of the streams will be start to finish, but some could have a high number of seeks. Maybe there is another file system that could do this better?

• Can I use a wireless-N laptop as an NAS for seamless and fast data transfer and access?

  I have a nice spare laptop (Dell 15R, one year old) that I was wondering if I could use as an NAS. The laptop has an E-Sata port, and I was wondering if I could set it up and plug in a few hard drives permanently (meaning I won't be unplugging it) to the eSata port and use the laptop as a wireless NAS to seamlessly and wirelessly store and access my files.   I was surprised to hear from this Reuters video that it was possible for a page loaded on one tab to access and/or inject data onto another page loaded on a different tab. TL;DW (too lazy; didn't watch) The interviewee in the video suggests that when doing online banking, the user exit his browser (thus closing all windows) and start a new browser session with just your banking page/tab open. Allegedly, malicious sites can check if you have your banking site open and inject commands onto those sites. Can someone confirm and/or deny this claim? Is it only possible even if there is not parent/child relationship between windows/tabs?

I'm wondering if these wait states are coming as part of an NFS filesystem connection. Could NFS be the cause here or should I be worried about something else? This is a VPS box on a fiber channel SAN. I'd think the bottleneck wouldn't be the SAN. Comments?

• File permission set to 644 and wordpress cannot access them?

  I'm having problems with WordPress not be able to access files. When installing certain themes and plugins, it comes up with an error saying that it cannot create the directory. When I try to edit style.css it says that I need to make that file writable. The file permissions were set to 644. It wouldn't work until I changed the settings to 777 or 776. WordPress was installed by our local ISP. Anyone got any ideas? It seems that WordPress has not been setup properly. Is there anyway I can fix this without reinstalling the whole thing?

• How can I secure Postgres for remote access when not in a private network?

  I have a database server on a VMWare VM (Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS server), and it just occurred to me that the server is accessible via the web, since the same physical server contains a VM that hosts public websites. My iptables in the database are such that only SSH traffic, loopback traffic, and TCP on port 5432 are allowed. I will only allow host access to the Postgres server from the IP of the other VM on the same physical machine. Does this seem sufficient for security, assuming there aren't gaping holes in my general OS configuration, or is Postgres one of those services that should never be web facing, (assuming there are some of "those"). Will I need to use hostssl instead of host in my pg_hba.conf, even though the data will travel only on my own network, presumably?

• How to install software packages on a shared Red Hat Linux host account without root access or rpm?

  I have a shared RHEL 4 host account where I do not have root privileges. I would like to install Git and Bash Complete in a way that they can be upgraded easily. To date, I've just been installing from source providing $HOME as a prefix to autoconf. Obviously this isn't ideal as I need to hunt down the files associated with the version I'm upgrading away from and delete them. I've tried using rpm but I just get -bash: rpm: command not found back so it's not available. I also looked into checkinstall but it looks like that requires rpm, dpkg, or Slackware's package manager to be available. Is there anything out there that can be used like a package manager without requiring root access or an existing package manager?

• How can I make sftp accounts that can only access their home directory?

  I'm using Ubuntu Server 9.10. I need to setup 6 accounts for users that will exclusively need sftp. When the user logs in, I need them to only have access to their home directory. I don't want them to be able to navigate to any other places in the file system. I need their ability to type commands to be limited to only the commands needed to view and transfer files back and forth to their home directory. I don't want to have to individually share the folders that belong to the library, because that would defeat the purposes of the library, which is to manage which folders are included in the library while also providing an easily accessible view of them all at once. Does anyone know how to share a Windows 7 library without that useless homegroup feature?

  Hi all, we have registered one of our domains with Google Apps 2 years ago. However, we didn't even use it. Now if I try to access: http://google.com/a/mydomain.com What I see is: Server error Sorry, you've reached a login page for a domain that isn't using Google Apps. Please check the web address and try again. Then I go to Google Apps Standard Edition signup page and type mydomain.com. However, what I get is: This domain has already been registered with Google Apps. Please contact your domain administrator for instructions on using Google Apps with this domain. Is there anyone who can explain me what this inconsistency is caused by and what I can do? Since Google Apps Standard Edition doesn't grant me to contact with Google, I can't even submit a bug report. Any help would be appreciated.

A recent independent security audit of our site recommended that "RDP is not exposed to the Internet and that a robust management solution such as a VPN is considered for remote access. When used, RDP should be configured for Server Authentication to ensure that clients cannot be subjected to man-in-the-middle attacks." Having read around a bit, it seems like Network Level Authentication is a Good Thing so I have enabled the "Allow connections only from Remote Desktop with NLA" option on the server today. Is this acion enough to mitigate the risk of a Man-in-the-Middle attack? Or are there other essential steps I should be taking? If VPN is essential, how do I go about it?

  Hi, I was wondering if I buy a wireless access point/router that also acts as a DNS nameserver for DHCP clients. I can see the hostnames of my home devices in the DHCP clients table of the router I have, it doesn't seem like a great leap of the imagination to have a local nameserver on there, something like hostname.home that automatically publishes those entries to a local zone.   How does one configure an Ubuntu guest to use a static IP that's visible to an OS X host, and ensure that the static IP is independent of the host's network configuration? I previously used bridged networking for my guest, but I'm constantly moving my host between networks so the guest IP is always different. • Lotus Notes "Format painter" or Quick access to fonts.

  I got Lotus Notes 7.0.3 at my job and I miss the "format painter" to copy the style in my mails. Does it exist? If not, the biggest problems I got are when I paste text form another program. The style is imported and I don't like that. I got to search for the "Default sans serif" font (witch is somewhere in the middle of the font list, another annoying thing). Basically, I use "Default sans serif" for text and "Default Monospace" for code. Is there a way to put them at the top of the font list of to get a quick access to them, or maybe in a toolbar or something?

  I've just migrated the AD with the whole nine yards, FSMO, PDC, RID, Schema, etc, from an SBS 2003 to a Win 2008 R2 Std. I have managed to have no error in the dcdiag before I demoted the SBS 2003 from the AD, fsmocheck, conectivity, advertising, dns, etc. The SBS 2003 demoted successfully. After this step I have restarted both, the old SBS and the new Win 2008 r2. After restart the new DC (which is the GC) started with an Access denied to the DNS Server MMC, actually it is looking like I would try to connect to the 2008 r2 DNS server from an older server console I can NOT manage DNS server through MMC nor through dnscmd (Command failed: ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED 5 0x5) I cannot even use the Action Option from the DNS Server MMC because all the options are DISABLED but for "Launch nslookup". I've made a lot of research on the internet but no luck, yet. So I come to ask for help. Thank you very much.
