• Few GUI problems with minimal install

  I installed a minimal Ubuntu with a complete functional GUI, but facing a few problems. nm-applet's icon won't show in the notification area, but I can connect to wired internet fine. I am not able to configure my wireless or VPN this way. gksu's authentication screen is different from the usual graphical authentication - the screen turns gray as usual, but there are more options like save password for this session or keyring. And most importantly, it won't accept my password no matter what. And lastly, Gwibber seems to install no matter what, but there's not a single package in my knowledge that I installed has anything related to Gwibber. I would welcome any help regarding these three issues. I did not mention what packages I installed, because the list is long, but I will do so if anyone requests. Thank you in advance!

• Bad disks in ancient server

  I have a 1998-era Netware 3.12 server that runs everything on our campus: general ledger, purchasing, payroll, student information, grades, you name it. The server has an Adaptec RAID controller with two volumes: RAID 1, 2 17GB scsi disks, Seagate ST318417W RAID 5, 3 4GB scsi disks, 2 Seagate ST34573W and 1 ST34572W. We are currently in the early stages of a project to replace this system, but you don't just jump into a new system like that and so I need to keep this server running until at least November 2011. This week we had not one but two hard drives fail. Thankfully they are from different volumes and we're able to keep running for the moment, but given the close nature of these failures I have serious doubts that I'll be able to avoid catastrophic failure from this server through the November target as is without restoring the RAID redundancy — it'll only take one more drive failure anywhere and I'm completely hosed. We are fortunate enough to have exact match "spares" lying around for both drives, but the spares are in unknown condition. I tried swapping just them in, but the RAID controller isn't smart enough to handle this and it renders the system unbootable. As for the RAID controller itself, there is utility I can get into during POST via a Ctrl-A shortcut, but I can't do much useful from there. To actually manage volumes I must first boot in to Netware, at which point I can use CI/O Array Management Software Version 2.0 to actually look at volume information. I suspect that the normal way to manage things is to boot from a special floppy with the controller software on it, but that floppy is long gone. Going through the options in the RAID software, I think the only supported way to replace a disk in an existing RAID volume is to physically add the disk, boot up and configure it as a "spare" for a volume, force the volume to use the spare to replace an existing down disk (and at this point I'm only guessing) so that the down disk becomes the spare, repair the volume, remove the spare from the volume, and then shut down and remove the disk. Then start all over for the other failed disk. All this amounts to a lot of downtime, assuming I can even make it work and that my spares are any good. As for finding reliable spares, I have no clue where to even begin looking to find a new 4GB scsi drive, or even which exact scsi system I'm looking for, as it's gone through a few different iterations over time. Another option is to migrate this to a virtual machine (hyper-v), but all previous attempts we've made in this area have failed to get very far. When this machine was installed I was just graduating from high school, and so it requires lower level knowledge of netware and dos than I ever developed, or if I did have since forgotten (I'm not exactly a dos neophyte, either). Part of my problem is this is a high-use server, and taking it down for a few days to figure things out isn't gonna fly very well. As for the question, I'm looking for anything that might be helpful in this situation: a recommendation on a place to find good spares from this era, personal experience repairing RAID volumes using a similar controller or building a hyper-v vm from an old netware server, a line on a floppy with better software for the RAID controller, recommendation on a good Novell consultant in Nebraska that would be able to put things right, a whole other option I haven't considered yet, etc. Update: For backups, we have good (recently verified via restore) backups of the data only -- nothing for the software that actually runs things. Update 2: Just a progress report that I currently have a working Netware 3.12 install in VMWare Virtual Server 2.0, thanks largely to the guide I found here: http://cerbulescubogdan.blogspot.com/2010/11/novell-netware-312-on-vmware.html The next steps are preparing empty netware volumes to match the additional volumes on my existing server, taking a dump of everything on the C:\ drive and netware volumes on my existing server, and figuring out from that information what modules need added to netware, installing my licenses (we do still have that disk, if it's any good), and moving data over. I have approval to bring the server down for a week after the first of the year (sadly not before), so, aside from creating empty volumes, the rest of the work will have to wait until then. Final Update (Jan 5, 2011): I was able to get spares working in both raid arrays without data loss this week. Both are now listed by the controller as "FAULT TOLLERANT" (yay!). I was also able to build on the progress from my last update and now have a functional "spare" server in VMWare Server 2.0. The spare can run and use our erp software, but I can't put it into production because I can't (yet) print from that box (and I have no idea why). Even so, this VM will do in a pinch if I have no other choice, and between it and the repaired RAID arrays I'm comfortable pushing on until I can junk the machine in November.

  Hi everybody, We need to update our webserver (PIII-700MHz and 512Mb RAM) and could not do that without reinstalling the whole system. However my choice to put Ubuntu 9.10 was probably not the best and the machine works very slow now. Actually, we need it just for simple LAPM configuration and we really want to use the old box for this purpose. It used to have old version of Linux Slackware in which I didn't manage to update PHP due to a very complicated non-standard setup. What would you recommend?

  TL;DR: sudo apt-get install ... saying "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." The problem I was trying to get the WebApps feature for PP and QQ following this blog post. I ran the sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webapps/preview command to add the repository, but i got a connection error. Since I know my current ISP gives a shaky connection, I tried again and sure enough, it worked. Then I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview, but I realized we had to update apt-get first, so I hit Ctrl + C to stop it. Then I ran sudo apt-get update which worked w/o a fuss, but when I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview again later, it showed an error message. Here's the dump: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming.   I'm looking for (free) Ubuntu YouTube software that can perform two tasks (could be separate software): display on screen notification (like transmission does when a download has finished) when a new video has been uploaded to your personal subscription box download videos in max quality (preferably automatically once a new video has been uploaded from specific channels / series) What I've found so far: All Video Downloader: only downloads manually, can't select quality MiniTube: Doesn't associate with your personal account, doesn't notify when new video has been uploaded from your subscriptions. Annoying GUI. Quite buggy. If this software doesn't exist yet, I'll try to make it myself.

• Problem with DirectX scene-graph

  I'm trying to implement a basic scene graph in DirectX using C++. I am using a left child-right sibling binary tree to do this. I'm having trouble updating each node's world transformation relative to its parent (and its parent's parent etc.). I'm struggling to get it to work recursively, though I can get it to work like this: for(int i = 0; i < NUM_OBJECTS; i++) { // Initialize to identity matrix.   I have been running into issue with my MSSQL Database setup with speed. Here is my scenario. About 100M Rows Average: 1k Updates Per Second Hard Drives: RAID 10 SSD MDF --Active Time: 0 Log Drives: 1 SSD LDF - Simple Recovery --Active Time 99.9 --Queue: 8 I do not need a back up of the log so it is set to simple recovery but my bottleneck is still at my log. I get high WAITLOG times and thus it can not update any faster. I can't do bulk updates/transactions and each update needs to be one at a time. Is my only option to increase write performance of the log drives, add a RAID drives? Any suggestions on increasing the performance?

• Static IP configuration causing apt-get errors

  I am getting errors when running apt-get update or when installing new packages. Although this only happens when the server configured for a static IP address. Changing the configuration back to DHCP and restarting networking fixes the problem, although I want a static IP. Once it is working I can change back to my static IP address and restart networking. Although this only works until I restart the server (restarting the router is ok), and then I start getting the same errors and have to switch back to DHCP. Any ideas on what could be causing this or tips on troubleshooting it? • How can I downgrade a system that accidentally had backports installed?

  I installed a fresh Ubuntu system. Somehow - possibly through my own error - the backports repository got enabled. Then I did several upgrades. I noticed that this happened when networking suddenly stopped working, "Network Settings" now has an "(alpha)" in the title bar, "System Settings" ? "Network" now displays an error dialog saying "The system network services are not compatible with this version". Now, I've disabled the backports repository, and I'd like to restore my system to its previously-functional state. My question is twofold: How do I determine which packages were installed from backports? Can I automatically re-install all those packages (and purge their configuration) to get back to a sensible state? If the answer to 2 is "no" I can probably manually purge some things and reinstall, but it would be nice to have it handled automatically. Update: It wasn't an update that broke the network; it was apt-get install indicator-network, which installed something called "connman" and removed network-manager and network-manager-gnome. Nevertheless I am leaving the question up, since I am still interested in how I can purge packages from a particular source after accidentally adding that source, and how I can determine which packages were installed from where.

• Transmission-daemon not picking up on watch directory

  Trying to get my transmission-daemon to pick up files from a dropbox folder, to make remote starting easier (it's a headless system). As far as I can tell, the settings.json file is as expected, but none of the files I place in the folder get picked up. I have checked that dropbox is syncing correctly. Here is the whole settings.json file, but the relevant lines are included below: "watch-dir": "/home/john/Dropbox/torrents", "watch-dir-enabled": true Update It appears to be a permissions issue. From /var/log/syslog: Unable to watch "/home/john/Dropbox/torrents": Permission denied (watch.c:79) I have tried stopping the daemon - sudo service transmission-daemon stop - changing permissions of folder using chown - sudo chown -R john /home/john/Dropbox/torrents - restarting daemon - sudo service transmission-daemon start Same result, however Update 2 Permissions for the folder are: drwsrwsrwx 2 john debian-transmission 4096 2012-04-09 19:40

• Ubuntu Lenove OCZ Agility3 - No Grub after install

  I've tried a dualboot (Win7 + Ubuntu) installation it on a Lenovo E330 with Agility3 240 Gigs... Conclusions: Ubuntu:: Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 ( 21.06.2012 ) is not able to install grub in a bootable way. Grub will be installed and does update-grub during Installation, recognizes also the Win OS. But after a restart it boots directly to Windows.This is directly connected to the OCZ Agility3. On a good old fashion harddisk (those with the moving parts) Ubuntu is capable to install grub with no problem in a bootable manner. PinguyOS:: PinguyOS 12.04 LTS x86_64 (which is a Ubuntu based distro) is able to handle the Grub installation on OCZ Agility3. However they both use Grub 1.99... What i did:: Installed Windows. Installed Ubuntu. Installed PinguyOS. Grub Updates:: Grub updates are only through Pinguy OS possible, this means you have to edit the Ubuntu Grub entries manually after Kernelupdates on Ubuntu, in the PiguyOS sytem.. What i've already tried: Firmwareupgrade OCZ (livestick, successfull) Install Ubuntu Grub to sda Install Ubuntu Grub to sdc (Ubuntu Partion) Install Ubuntu Grub to /boot update-grub manually after install restore grub any ideas appreciated..

• Software design of a browser-based strategic MMO game

  I wonder if there are any known tested software designs for Travian-like browser-based strategic MMO games? I mean how would they implement the server of such games or what is stored in database and what is stored in RAM? Is the state of the world stored in one piece or is it distributed among a number of storage? Does anyone know a resource to study the problems and solutions of creating such games? [UPDATE] Suggested in comments, I'm going to give an example how would I design such a project. Even though I'm not sure if I'm proposing the right one. Having stored the world state in a MongoDB, I would implement an event collection in which all the changes to the world will register. Changes that are meant to happen in the future will come with an action date set to the future and those that are to be carried out immediately will be set to now. Having this datastore as the central point of the system, players will issue their actions as events inserted in datastore. At the other end of the system, I'll have a constant-running software taking out events out of the datastore which are due to be carried out and not done yet. Executing an event means apply some update on the world's state and thus the datastore. As scalable as this design sounds, I'm not sure if it will be worth implementing. For one, it is pointless to cache the datastore as most of updates happen once without any follow ups. For instance if you have the growth of resources in your game, you'll be updating the whole world state periodically in which case, having incorporated a cache, you are keeping the whole world in RAM (which most likely is impossible). So can someone come up with a better design?

• Cannot see boot options after editing grub background

  After solving this problem I managed to get myself into truble again out of nothing by trying to change the display of the dual boot option page in Boot Customizer. I have changed the background, the fonts size (I have increased them) and font style (I have chosen UnDotum). But Boot Customizer gave me an error (I mean a message that the application was closed unexpectedly or smth). I have restarted BootCustomizer and the settings were there. When I rebooted, instead of the normal boot options list, just the background image that I had selected and nothing else. I used Boot Repair to repair grub, it says it did it successfully, but I still get the background image when I try to boot. Any ideas? (Could it be the matter that I chose UnDotum font style? That was installed in Lubuntu - but how could it be accessible in displaying boot options?) • Concurrency with listeners and upload: is this solution sound?

  I'm working on an Android app. We have listeners for position data and camera capture which is timed on a background thread (not a service). The timer thread dictates when the image is captured and also when the data is cached in a local sqlite db. So, my question is how to properly store the location data as it comes in based on the listeners and pull that data so that the database can be updated as the camera capture is executed. I can't put the location data into the database as it arrives because it is processed more frequently than the camera images and the camera images are what dominates the architecture at the moment. (Location data is supplement). However I need the location data to get a rough location of the where the image is captured. My first thought was to have singleton store the location data. And have a semaphore on the getInstance method so if the database update is happening (after an image is captured) we don't have an error. The location data can wait for the database update or it can be lost for that particular event it doesn't really matter. What are you thoughts? Am I on the right track? (And is this the right sub-site or would this be better on stackoverflow?)

• HTC Android device mounted as USB drive is read-only unless I'm root

  When I connect my HTC Incredible S to my Ubuntu 10.10 system as a USB drive, the device seems to mount OK, but is read-only unless I access it as root. For example, if I run nautilus, I can't drag and drop files to the SD-card in the phone, but if I run sudo nautilus I can. I have USB debug support set on the phone (Applications > Development > USB debugging) and I have added a rule for the device in /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules on my Ubuntu system. Any suggestions as to how I can mount the drive so that I can copy content to the SD card without needing to sudo? Update Following advice from waltinator, I added the following line to my /etc/fstab: UUID=3537-3834 /media/usb1 vfat rw,user,noexec,nodev,nosuid,noauto However, the Android device is still being auto-mounted on /media/usb1 with uid and gid root. • Which language is more suitable heavy file tasks?

  I need to write a script (based on basic functions) to process /image/audio/video files. The process is mainly filesystem tasks and converts. The database of files has been stored by mysql. The script is simple but cause heavy tasks on the system; for example renaming/converting/copying thousands of file in a run. The script does not read the content of files into memory, it just manage the commands for sub-processes. The main weight is on the communication with filesystem. The script will be used regularly for new files. My concern is about performance. I am thinking of Shell script a complied language like C Please advise which programming language is more suitable for this purpose and why? UPDATE: An example is to scan a folder for images, convert them with ImageMagick, move files to destination folder, get file info, then update the database. As you can see, the process has no room for optimization, and most of languages have similar APIs for popular programs like ImageMagick, MySQL, etc. Thus, it can be written in any language. I just wish to reduce resource usage by speeding up the long loop. NOTE: I know that questions about comparing languages are not favorable, but I really had problem to choose, because the problems can appear in action.

  In the same way gmail can generate ads based on email content, I am looking for a way to develop a system which can: Allow users to connect their email address to our site It then would continously monitor all incomming emails From the incomming emails there would be a critera(e.g. a certain address or subject) if any of the emails matched the critea it would would be saved to a database Then once a new email had been found the users would receive an email notification will tells them to log back into the site to see it. My questions are: Would this be possible? What would be a good language to use(generally I like php, python and java) Are there any frameworks which would help do this? How would I connect the users email account to allow access to their emails(do I need a mail server?) Any advice? Thank you! If you need more information please let me know.

• How to configure Thunderbird to notify new mails only in certain folders?

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 and recently started using Thunderbird. I have GMail account and have configured a lot of Labels in it, all of which appear as folders in Thunderbird. Most of these are just subscriptions to mailing lists and are not that important. I have a few labels which are very important, for whom I would like immediate notification when a mail arrives. The problem is that the Mail indicator in the Unity top Panel, lights up for any incoming mail. How do I configure it to indicate incoming mails only in certain folders?
