• Multilingual sites and Google search results, using sub-folders for language

  About three months ago we added an English version of our, previously Japanese only, site under the subfolder /en/ we've tried to follow the sometimes incomplete best practices laid out by Google by adding alternate tags to all pages that are currently translated. The top page for instance has the following meta tags for language. <link rel="canonical" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="ja" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="/en/"> While the English main page under /en/ has <link rel="canonical" href="/en/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="ja" href="/"> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="/en/"> Alternate languages are setup in the sitemap. (as per Google's recommendations) It seems however that Google absolutely refuses to show the English top page in results when the user is using English at google.com if you search you'll, as of this post, get the Japanese description and a title that Google has apparently invented instead of the title and description in the meta-tags for the /en/ index page. Does anyone have any experience with subfolders actually working to affect search results? What are the best practices for ensuring that the correct language version of my website is displayed through Google and other search engines? And how long will it take before the new language version becomes prominent in search engine results?

• A lot of 408 errors in apache logs - how to prevent them?

  I see a lot of 408 errors in my apache2 logs. I increased RequestReadTimeout and KeepAliveTimout but errors are still there. The errors look like this: xx.xx.xx.xx - - [05/Dec/2012:19:33:56 +0100] "-" 408 4561 "-" "-" xx.xx.xx.xx - - [05/Dec/2012:19:33:56 +0100] "-" 408 4561 "-" "-" I heard that these errors are related to Chrome optimization and some users did reported our site returning 408 internal error. It is interesting that we get two 408 error from same IP in sequence then it that IP start working.

• Classifieds web app / eBay clone

  I'm reluctant to ask this, as it may not pass the question requirements (not allowed to ask for suggestions?). Our company operates in a niche which hires and sells equipment. Often there is a requirement to source new goods, which would then be hired or on-sold. The industry (niche) as a whole does not really have anywhere specific online to go to find new goods. We thought about building a niche equivalent of eBay. To build a clone of eBay, would a simple classifieds script be too simple? We would need the majority of features that eBay has. Any suggestions for a web app to act as an equivalent of eBay?

• Why do my websites have a first page rank on Bing and Yahoo but not Google? [closed]

  I have 3 websites suffering from a drop in ranking with Google and hence a huge drop in traffic. The instant drop ocurred in September and I have not been able to remedy it. For the past 6-10 years my main website http://LearnToSail.Net has ranked from #3 to #1 on the 1st page of Google and all the other engines with the search term "learn to sail" Now it shows on the 1st page of Bing and Yahoo but does not show up on ANY pages of Google. The only way it does come up is if I add "cd" to the "learn to sail" phrase. We sell a sailing cd on that website. The other websites are http://LearnToSailOnLine.com ..search terms are "learn to sail online" or learntosailonline and historyofthepilgrims.com search terms are "history of the pilgrims" "historyofthepilgrims" I get the same result. Gone on Google but 1st pages for Bing and Yahoo. I have researched, edited,updated blogs, made sitemaps, prayed to the universe and use Google Webmaster tools but nothing is changing and I have lost alot of business. I host with 1and1.com and have been back and forth with them but to no avail and no change in traffic. I thought maybe some DNS mapping was off. I used to have alot of traffic now I have hardly any. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am still in the process of working on the issue of course! This is a really great website here and I am glad I came across it. • Blogger homepage won't update!

  i am new on blogging webmaster Tools. When i usually add new post to my blog, it will automatic updated my homepage also. But from last 14th January, my homepage won't update by Google SEPR. As a result i am losing my popularity on SEPR. Previously when i post new article, 70-80% will go to the first page result. But after the problem occurs, none of them reach in top 15page of Google SEPR :( Last 1/12/12, Google webmaster sent me a "Notice of DMCA removal from Google Search" massage to indicates one of my URL that contains some infringing content which i deleted after receiving their notice. Not only that, i also cheeked all of my posts if there any additional infringing content available. After removing that, i fill out Google's Content Removed Notification form to notify them and Google also sent me a feedback that they received it and suggest "In the future, if you have removed the allegedly infringing content from your site (and won’t put it back), please use the correct form" which also i filled up. Now my question is that, Is everything alright which i did before? Although my new posts are indexed in GSEPR with ".." but why Google Robots.txt won't update my homepage which previously automatically updated when a new article was published.

• Recommend an open source CMS for single page web site

  Hi I want to create a single page web site like http://kiskolabs.com/ or http://www.carat.se to display my portfolio. I want to add new products after launching the site without having to edit the entire site. I've looked at opencart (too much for single page site), Magneto (more for ecommerce), Wordpress (couldn't find open source / free templates which i can start from). Can you suggest a CMS which will support the creation of a single page site and allow insertion of new products without having to edit the entire page? I would prefer a CMS which also has open source / free templates which I can tweak for my use. I can do php and mysql, xml. If it is an easier option I can do PSD to site (but don't know much about this at all).

• Homepage issue on Google [closed]

  We have recently updated our website www.blinds4uk.co.uk with a new homepage containing additional features and more on page content but since then we have lost primary keyword positions and the home page has disappeared completely. The only time it appears is for an exact search ‘blinds4uk’. Today I took snippets of 'unique content' from the homepage and put this into the 'google search' but our homepage was nowhere to be found. When I did the same in ‘Yahoo’ the homepage came up. Are we missing something? We ranked in the top 4 for primary kw terms 'blinds uk' & 'uk blinds' but now we don’t show anywhere for these terms. Our homepage has never ranked well for the primary kw 'blinds' yet our internal pages rank very well with many pages on page 1 of google uk. We employed an SEO firm for 9 months to help us establish issues with the homepage but they never could, so we got rid. We have been trying to get to the root cause of why the homepage ranks so poorly for a number of years and only yesterday we established that we had the meta tag directly below the tag and our title & meta description were further down the page; we have today corrected. Not sure what effect this would have on the way Google reads the homepage but we are trying everything to try and get the homepage ranking fro those primary kw's. Our current developers & ex SEO guys are all part of the same company and cannot pin-point anything other than saying carryon with their SEO team because it will take time but just comes across as a milking exercise. Another thing which I have found very strange is the data from our 'traffic audience'. We are a UK based website yet our traffic stats were showing as;- UK 36.6%, Denmark 35.8% and India 27.6%. – don’t make sense to me! Is there anybody out there that could simply point us in the right direction to the problem(s), so we can fix once and for all? Could there be anything within the code that is causing the home page not to display within google for our primary kw's terms such as blinds, window blinds etc. I would appreciate any advice at all that may help us in our quest to sort this homepage issue once and for all

• Huge surge in direct traffic from one particular town

  Last month I noticed that the direct visits on our site have increased by nearly 150% whilst bounce rate is also considerably up. After drilling down further I can see that we have had nearly 2000 direct visits from one town in Connecticut called Stamford, with a bounce rate of 100%! I have been scratching around for answers but I can only find that it may be to do with our uptime monitoring tool; Pingdom. Does anyone know/have any experience with this kind of issue, any help is appreciated I have just noticed that we are receiving identical traffic in a town in England and a town in Scotland... This definitely makes me think it's to do with our uptime monitoring tool.

  It's been two month I've launched a website. I recently ran into some websites which list directory of other websites. Some examples can be http://www.addgoogleurl.com/ and webdirectorieslist.com, etc. I was talking with my colleague and he says, adding the URL of my website to these kind of websites will negate the effect of other organic real links. Does google consider positive/negative points for these kind of links from web directory websites? Do you have any source for your answer to refer to? I found this question asked before on webmasters.SE, this is asking about many links from a website.

  I develop Rails 3 applications, but prior to this, my background was a designer (typically making mockups in Photoshop and then breaking them down to HTML5/CSS3). Now, some great tools/templates exist for getting working layouts ready for Rails and other apps quickly, e.g., http://railsapps.github.com/rails-composer/. Many are using CSS Frameworks such as Twitter Bootstrap. I'd like to know whether there is a local app (for Mac) that can design layouts, much the way Dreamweaver would, but that are geared towards being utilized in a Twitter Bootstrap situation alongside Ruby (Rails) or Python apps, etc.

Anyone who's browsed the documentation there knows that there's a lot of need for improvement for more clear understandings on use for each property. My question on this post is more about the "significantLinks" property and how it effects SEO for on page, in content anchored text. Does anyone have any more information regarding whether its good to use for link optimization? I understand what schema.org means that it's to be used on "non-navigational links" and those links should be relevant to the current page's meaning. But will using this property hurt SEO or make SEO better for each page? Thanks in advance, as by answering this with accurate information you are helping not just me, but many people who are trying to make their customers more successful through helping their rank for relevant keywords to their business, bringing them more search engine traffic.

• Adding a list of "recent articles" affects SEO

  We have a site which has a sidebar with sections (or "widgets" if you like) showing stuff like "Recent Articles", "Other Articles by this User", "Similar Articles" etc. The issue is, Google seems to take these links very seriously. In fact, if I have only a single article which is closely related to a certain phrase (and several other pages link to it in their sidebars), when I do a Google search, it lists all those other pages highlighting that one link to the page that should actually be the most relevant one. And these pages don't even mention the phrase anywhere else. It there a common approach with adding these sidebar links? For example, I might add them through ajax after the page is loaded, but then crawlers will have harder time finding them?

I can see those cache from Way back Machine and the site was indexed in Yahoo, but not in google. Did I get my index on Google deleted because I did not update it often? • Is it okay to showcase templates/layouts recreated in different codes in a portfolio?

  I have several different templates/layouts, both simple and complex. I recreated these templates multiple times, just using different codes. (Say, a complex one was originally made in only HTML and CSS, I recreated it using HTML, Javascript, CSS, then again with a HTML and PHP concoction, and etc.) I wanted to showcase my work and skills by doing this, but I don't know if it would be okay for that all to go into a resumé/portfolio. This is why: Freelancing Does potential business really care about how their site is made, as long as it looks and functions to their liking? (As in, should I just only show the one example of each template/layout and not the multiple recreations?) Potential Hire However, if a potential employer were to stumble across my resumé/portfolio, would having the multiple recreations do any good for a career outlook? (As in, this potential employer is a company where I could be working on a team to create/develop sites and not be freelancing; would a lack of skill-shining turn this employer away because I didn't set myself apart and show that I'm not just like every other budding web designer?) Those two issues have me wondering if it is okay to have a resumé/portfolio combined for this specific reason. Or does something like this not matter to potential business (as a freelancer) because they wouldn't care either way as long as it looks and functions to their liking and therefore it is okay to showcase the recreations with the originals?

• Homepage not showing on Google

  About six weeks ago my homepage (mayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) disappeared from the google organic search for "kayaking pembrokeshire" despite it having been number 2 within a few weeks of it's launch last summer. My previous site (www.mikemayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) had been 2nd for about six years and has 301 redirects for all pages to the new site. Google toolbar still rates the homepage as 3/10 and the domain is still showing in search results, just not the homepage. A little research suggests that this is most likely to be due to an issue with google treating two pages as identical content (one with www. and one with not) since the changes in their algorithms around that time and that the way to fix this is to add some code somewhere. This makes sense to me as my print advertising doesn't have the www part of the address. I have cpanel access but a limited knowledge on web coding, having picked things up as I've gone along and paid for designers etc., when needed. Would someone be able to let me know where I have to go to add the code and what code I need to add to redirect the crawlers to one page? Or is there another issue that is causing this? Documentation for List-Unsubscribe is found at http://www.list-unsubscribe.com/. From this documentation I expect a button to be provided by a supported mail client. I have tested the 'List-Unsubscribe' header and it does not appear to provide the button. I have tested in both Gmail and OS X Mail. I tested with an http address and with both an email address and an http address. The format of the header is as follows: List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:[email protected]>, <http://domain.com/member/unsubscribe/[email protected]?id=12345N> No button appears in any test. My questions: How widely is List-Unsubscribe supported? Should a button be appearing somewhere, or does something else have to be present? I have seen a comment that even if the button is not present, services like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail/Windows Live would give higher regard to email having the header. Thus it might be worthwhile for this aspect alone. Please note that our standard email footer already contacts instructions and a link to allow unsubscribing from our email. Finally, is it worth while to implement this header? (That is, any downsides?)

• Embeding a generic google search with autocomplete - not a custom site search

  Most people's home page is google.com. My homepage is just a custom html page hosted on my computer. I do this because I am a web developer, and I have several projects that I work on a one time, so I like to have quick links to all of them. On that page I usually just have a Link to google.com for when I want to search. But below all of my quick links, I want to add a google search box (with Autocompletions). I first used a simple iframe to embed google.com into the page, but then my search results were confined to that iframe. I wanted to search for something, then my results would open in a new tab. I then came across this code snippet but it doesn't have Autocompletions: http://www.refactory.org/s/google_search/view/2 How can I add Autocompletions to this? Or is there a better way of doing it? • Rehosting content from another server

The pages will not reside on the customer's servers for logistical reasons and because we need to maintain control of the content. The plan is for the customer to set up a mod_rewrite rule that will funnel certain types of URLs to a single server-side handler script that will grab the appropriate file from a CDN and just output its content. This illustrates the approach: <?php echo(file_get_contents(str_replace($customer_host, $cdn_host, $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']))); ?> Can anyone think of pitfalls or offer up a different approach? Is there some way to circumvent a script altogether?

• I need a form to tie MySQL Records together.

  I need a HTML-based form to tie database records together. The user scenario that I envision is somthing like this: A super-user does a search of the database and is delivered a table of records based on that search; each record is numbered with the database-record id. There would also be two text fields next to each record. These text fields would allow: the user to make a reference from one record to another. For example, a user could enter into record id #457 the integer 242 to indicate that there is a correlation with record ID #242. The user would also describe the type of relationship it is. This could be accomplished with a simple integer in the second field that indicates the type of relationship between the two records. When the super-user hits the submit button, all of these relationships are saved in a mySqljoin table. One option is to give me advice on how to implement and code this myself in PHP. However, before I reinvent the wheel, another option is to lead me to a free script that does something similar.

  I have a windows web hosting package. I have 2 different domain names. Can i point my first domain to the the hosting package and then run BlogEngine.NET and then point the second domain to the hosting package running NopCommerce cart? www.domain1.co.uk (blog) www.domain2.co.uk (e-commerce cart) In IIS i would just create a new application within the site and create the bindings for domain2. But does this work for web hosting packages from 123-reg.co.uk
