• SEO: Getting site to show in location-specific searches

  I'm really new to this SEO world and I've been reading a lot to try and figure it out. We have a site moodbond.com that allows users to browse/create events anywhere. And we fill it with content from the main cities in the US. We would like it to show for searches for things like "events in san francisco" or "what to do in new york", however, since the site is not really location-specific, I'm not really sure where to begin. I've been thinking a couple of things, maybe you can help me decide if these would be a good way to start or if I should try something different. 1- Allow something like location-specific urls (e.g. moodbond.com/browse/san-francisco) could just show the main page centered in San Francisco. 2- Change the headers/title of the page so it adapts automatically to the city being browsed (and change this dynamically as the user changes the location of the map). 3- Add internal links to different locations (e.g. add a link at the footer of the page that says "Events in Seattle" that makes the site load events in that city. (this would probably depend on implementing #1). What do you guys think? will any of these really help or should I look for a different approach? any advice is welcome. Thanks

• Why does Google Analytics log a user logging in as an exit?

  I have custom event tracking set up in Google Analytics that tracks when a visitor registers on the site. The tracking is working fine. However, GA is showing that 100% of users "exit" the site after registering. They aren't exiting however, they are just getting logged in. Is there some reason why a user creating a session by logging in would cause GA to lose track of the visitor and think a new user had arrived? Is there any way to prevent this?

• MySQL vs. SQL Server GoDaddy, What is the difference between hosted DB and App_Data Db

  I'm using GoDdady for site hosting, and I'm currently using MySQL, because there are less limits on size,etc. My question is what is the difference between using a hosted GoDaddy Db such as MySQL vs. creating a SQL Server database in the the App_Data folder? My guess is security? Would it be a bad idea to use a SQL ServerDB that's located in the App_Data folder? Additional Well I am able to create a .mdf (SQL Server DB file) in the App_Data folder, but I'm really unsure if should use that or not, If I did use it it would simplify using some of the Microsoft tools. Like I said my guess is that it would be less secure, but I don't really know. I know I have a 10gb, file system limit, so I'm assuming my db would have to share that space.

• Google Analytics - Traffic Source - Search engine - (Not Provided)

  I am using Google Analytics, now here when I go to "Traffic Source Overview" under that it shows Keyword as "(Not provided)" which is almost 40% of my traffic source. Now more than 90% of search engine traffic is from Google and still out of that for more than 40% of keywords are "(Not provided)". Can anyone explain me what is going wrong here or how can I get that data? Because that comes as 1st option and is biggest keyword in the list. Will that be some crawler or secure google search?

• Google Analytics - bad experiences? (esp. adult content)

  Hello all, I work for a rather large adult website, and we're currently not using Google Analytics. There is an internal debate going on about whether we should start using Analytics, but there is hestitation from certain parties. The main argument is that they fear that Google will get too much insight into our website, and might even block us from the index as a result based on our adult content. Has anyone here ever had such an experience, or know stories about bad experiences with Google Analytics in such a manner? I personally think it will only improve our website if we were able to use Analytics, but the dev team was asked to look into possible negative effects. Any help would be appreciated.

  We are currently working on simple school project using Codeigniter where we need login page. It would be very useful if Lastpass could recognise and save logins. We have several accounts with different roles and manual insert of login is pretty slow. • What is a good solution for UA testing multiple projects simultaneously?

  My client often has several projects/tasks going at once that sometimes need to be tested simultaneously on one website. They are often separate applications on the website, but sometimes share UDFs, etc. We currently have 3 public-facing environment websites - i.e. dev.website.com, test.website.com, and www.website.com. As the programmer, I'm trying to find a good solution to allow for UA testing of multiple projects/tasks at once. Currently, I'm finding myself switching between code branches (using SubVersion). What some of my options?

• Google Analytics - include filter not working

  I just added an include filter this morning in my domain (test.org). I have: Custom Filter Include Request URI ^/test-a/46212$|^/test-a/46212|^/test-a/46315 Now after I go to Content Site Content All Pages, I see stats for other pages that I didn't include in my filter. For example I see /somethingelse. I only want to see stats for /test-a/46212 and whatever else in my filter. Please let me know what I'm doing wrong.

  My site currently forces all non www. pages to use www. Ultimately, I am able to handle all unique subdomains and parse correctly but I am trying to achieve the following: (ideally with mod_rewrite): when a consumer visits www.site.com/john4, the server processes that request as: www.site.com?Agent=john4 Our requirements are: The URL should continue to show www.site.com/john4 even though it was redirected to www.site.com?index.php?Agent=john4 If a file (of any extension OR a directory) exists with the name, the entire process stops an it tries to pull that file instead: for example: www.site.com/file would pull up (www.site.com/file.php if file.php existed on the server. www.site.com/pages would go to www.site.com/pages/index.php if the pages directory exists).   I am in the process of re-designing my website. I will be changing the URL structure of several pages and in some cases the pages are going to be deleted as they are no longer necessary or obsolete. My question is this: I do not want to effect any SEO by having a lot of 404 errors pop-up. For the pages that I am changing the URL I will set 301 redirects but how do I handle the pages that I am deleting outright and have no redirects? From my understanding if those pages start showing 404s it will hurt SEO. Is this correct? How do I handle deletion of pages?

• Browser window size statistics?

  I was wondering, are there any statistics available on what size users have their browser set to nowadays? I know the screen resolutions (we have analytics, which shows those as well) but I doubt a lot of people with 1280*xxx and higher still browse full-screen though. My boss is determined to keep our website 900px wide though, because that way people with 1800*xxx resolutions can have two browser windows next to eachother without having to scroll horizontally. I have never seen anyone browse with two adjacent browser windows like that except here at my current job, so I'm kind of doubting whether this is the best decision or just his personal preference. Anyone that can help out here?

• How do I interpret direct traffic that lands on random pages?

  Looking at yesterday, according to Google Analytics, I got six direct visitors to my site (their source/medium is direct/(none)). Only one ended up at the actual domain. The other five ended up at miscellaneous foo.com/xyz.html. I did not send out links to people by email, and I'm not sure how likely it is the people would have copy/pasted the URLs. How do the visitors end up there? Is there a way to better capture where they might be coming from?

• What are some potential issues in blocking all incoming requests from the Amazon cloud?

  Recently I, along with the rest of the world, have seen a significant increase in what appears to be scraping from Amazon AWS-related sources. So simply put, I blocked all incoming requests from the Amazon cloud for our hosted application. I know that some good services/bots are now hosted on the cloud, and I'm wondering if certain IP addresses should be allowed, as they may gather data that would in the end benefit our site's SEO rankings? -- UPDATE -- I added a feature to block requests from the following hosts: Amazon Softlayer ServerDeals GigAvenue Since then, I have seen my network traffic decrease (monitored by network out bytes). Average operation is around 10,000,000 bytes. You can see where last week I was not blocking, then started blocking. I've since removed the blocks and will see what the outcome is.

• Hosting and domain registrations for multiple clients

  I am finally getting regular work desiging, developing, and deploying websites for small businesses and individuals. So far the websites utilize single-user content management systems, so the websites create, as far as I know, minimal load on the shared servers. I have always required that each of my clients purchase annual shared hosting at Dreamhost. For domain registration, I ask that they register with Dreamhost, but some already have a registered domain elsewhere and this is fine with me. I do this so the billing issues are the client's responsibility, not mine. My question is: Since I can register unlimited domains and connect them to my one shared hosting account at Dreamhost, should I not be requiring clients to individually pay for shared hosting and a domain? Should I actually be paying for one hosting account and then hosting all of my client's websites on that account? As I said before, I currently have each client buy their own hosting, because I feel that, for example, if there is high traffic to their site, there would be less a chance of the site going down than if their site was hosted with many others on one account. I am famous for being long-winded, please let me know if I can clarify at all. Thanks!

• Should I submit my RSS feed as Google Sitemap?

  I currently have no sitemap for a website I'm creating. I do have an RSS feed which includes the N latest updated posts on the site. It doesn't include everything on the site though, just blog posts. Creating a full sitemap would be a bit of a hassle I think. Should I submit the feed instead? Is there a difference between using a regular sitemap and a feed? Is it important to have a sitemap? What happens when you do/don't?

• What's an acceptable "Avg. Page Load Time"?

  Is there any industry rule of thumb for what's considered an unacceptable load time v. an OK one v. a blistering fast one? We're just reviewing some Google Analytics data and getting 0.74 Avg. Page Load Time reported. I guess that's OK. However it would be good if some meatier comparison data were available, or a blog post, or somewhere where there's some analysis of what speeds are generally being achieved by various kinds of sites. Any useful links to help someone interpret these speeds? If you Google it you just get a lot of results dealing with how to improve your speed. We're not at that stage yet.

• Embeding a generic google search with autocomplete - not a custom site search

  Most people's home page is google.com. My homepage is just a custom html page hosted on my computer. I do this because I am a web developer, and I have several projects that I work on a one time, so I like to have quick links to all of them. On that page I usually just have a Link to google.com for when I want to search. But below all of my quick links, I want to add a google search box (with Autocompletions). I first used a simple iframe to embed google.com into the page, but then my search results were confined to that iframe. I wanted to search for something, then my results would open in a new tab. I then came across this code snippet but it doesn't have Autocompletions: http://www.refactory.org/s/google_search/view/2 How can I add Autocompletions to this? Or is there a better way of doing it?   Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am a relative beginner when it comes to choosing web servers and hosting plans. I'm about to signup for a hosting plan with GoDaddy. My main requirement is ColdFusion and MySQL. The plans on offer include Linux and Windows based plans. Which one should I choose, and why? I don't have a lot of requirements other than what I mentioned above. I never used Linux before but I doubt I'll ever need to do anything beyond tampering with my account. What are the main advantages of one over the other?
