  Given a public site with no logins: I let people post links to public Facebook profiles, and my site fetches the profile picture and displays it. Would it be ok if I just told people to post profiles of which they had the owner’s permission? Does such a statement exonerate me from copyright infringements and place the burden on the user? Edit: For bonus points. Can the statement just be a notice under the button (that will save the link) that says that "By clicking this button you agree to the terms and conditions" with maybe a link to the terms and conditions.

• Flash site loads slowly

  I have a simple html page that embeds an swf, that downloads other xml, swf and image files. The total count of the requests reaches about 90. I am aware that it should take a while until the content is available and I am OK with that. All the needed files are hosted by two different providers in the US: flashxml.net/monochrome-demo.html and u1.flashcomponents.net/samples/8751/index.html From two different countries in Europe, the content shows up a lot later (almost twice as later) from flashxml, than flashcomponents. I've done mtr tests and the ping difference is about 40ms and the flashxml server load is below 1. Do you have any other suggestions as to what should I look at?

• Best way to lay-out the website when sections of it are almost identical

  so, I have a minisite for the mobile application that I did. The mobile application is a public transport (transit) schedule viewer for a particular city (let's call it Foo), and I'm trying to sell it via that minisite. I publish that minisite in www.myawesomeapplication.com/foo/. It has the usual "standard" subpages, like "About", "Compatible phones", "Contact", etc. Now, I have decided to create analogue mobile application for other cities, Bar and Baz. These mobile applications (products) would be almost identical to the one for the Foo city, thus the minisites for those would (should) look very similar too (except for some artwork and Foo = Bar replacement). The question is: what do you think would be the most logical way to lay-out the website in this situation, both from the business and search engine perspective? In other words, should I just duplicate the /foo/ website to /bar/ and /baz/, or would it be better to try to create a single website under root path (/)? I don't want search engine penalties for almost-duplicate information under /foo/, /bar/ and /baz/, and also I don't want a messy, non-localized website (I guess the user is more likely to buy something if he/she sees "This-and-that is the application for NYC, the city you live in", not "This-and-that is the application for city A, city B, ..., NYC, ..., and city Z.")

• Using MLP, how to make a link to the according page in the other languages?

  Hi all, the question says it all, but here's a bit more detail: I help building a bilingual website using MLP on TextPattern. It's trivial to put a link to the top level page of another language, but how to put a link to the current page in another language? Eg. /en/contact should link to /de/kontakt (the same article in another language). I'm sure there are some variables somewhere that I could put into the template that would be filled with the correct links. Thankx in advance. :)

  I need a booking system for a theoretical project website. It would be an in-house job (not outsourcing to a web service) but all google searches on the subject yield results for said web services. I'd want to be able to use the system as such: For each day, there is availability recorded and if available a user can book in using the website, which sets that date to unavailable. There are other complexities, but this is the basic system I am trying to achieve - what would allow me to implement something like this?

• How to correctly handle redirect after site facelift

  I recently updated our site taking it from a multi-page site to a single page site. The problem now is that when the site is searched in say Google, it displays the site as well as the indexed pages. So if a user clicks say our "About" page, it takes them to our now outdated material. I am hoping to get some guidance on how to properly handle this. I figure the first step is to now setup a robots.txt on our new index page to tell the engines not to crawl beyond index.php. But in the meantime, how do I handle the fact that when searching our site on Google we may still have users who try to click on sub-page links? Should I simply setup redirects while waiting for the engines to update? And if so, do I need to setup redirects on each page using PHP or is this something I would take care of on our sites control panel? I am not very familiar with redirects... Any help is appreciated!

  In Google Analytics, there is extensive information on the mobile device, version and browser version. However, this doesn't seem to go beyond the mobile browser. I would like to determine which application is responsible for visits to my site. Specifically, I want to know how many visits are coming from zite. http://www.handsetdetection.com/properties/vendormodel/Apple/iPad/page:4 seems to indicate this information is probably available, where/does Google Analytics expose this?

• Still prompted for a password after adding SSH public key to a server

  I'm attempting to setup a git repository on my Dreamhost web server by following the "Setup: For the Impatient" instructions here. I'm having difficulty setting up public key access to the server. After successfully creating my public key, I ran the following command: cat ~/.ssh/[MY KEY].pub | ssh [USER]@[MACHINE] "mkdir ~/.ssh; cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys" ...replacing the appropriate placeholders with the correct values. Everything seemed to go through fine. The server asked for my password, and, as far as I can tell, executed the command. There is indeed a ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the server. The problem: When I try to SSH into the server, it still asks for my password. My understanding is that it shouldn't be asking for my password anymore. What am I missing? • Tracking a goal through a virtual pageview is not registering

  I am trying to track a goal in Google Analytics through a virtual pageview. As you can see in the code example, it is linking out from a picture instead of text with a link. I triple-checked to see if I had my Goals set up properly in the Admin panel, where the goal URL is set to "/click2", the goal type is URL destination and the match type is Head Match. I am unsure if the problem lies in the fact that it's linking out to an "https" link or if the link is attached to a picture that serves as a Call To Action. I would appreciate if any of you can help shed some light on this problem I'm having.

• Dedicated server: managed hosting or manage it myself?

  We're currently hosting a number of sites on a self-managed dedicated server. Some companies, however, offer a managed dedicated server hosting service. They offer: Roughly the same server spec Ticketing system support Managed daily backups Virtual firewall (but with a limit of 10 IP addresses allowed through at any one time) Now, this managed hosting is at extra expense - somewhere in the region of $500 per month, and the limit on the number of IP addresses they'll manage on the firewall is also a real pain. My thinking is it would be better and cheaper to Stay with the same host since the dedicated box is fine Get an Amazon AWS account and use their server to manage backups; there are a number of good tools that can be used to automate the process Configure iptables so that I have complete control of the firewall I want to know Is a managed virtual firewall likely to be more secure than me configuring iptables? Whether, in your opinion, it's best to let someone else take care of backups? If, from your experience, there's anything else i'm missing that warrants using managed hosting over a DIY service? I think there is some reluctance to not having managed hosting since a managed host in effect takes responsibility for your server, whereas any hardware or security issues with a server that we manage would mean we are forced to hold our hands up when a client site goes down. That said, I personally don't think a managed host does that much in the day to day running of your server (backups are automatic, OS updates are carried out with ease, etc.).

  I'm in the process of deploying my first website which is written is ASP.NET. I need to run a server side script at set intervals during the day which updates a database even if there is nobody using the site. I was led to believe that using Windows task scheduler would be the best option but now I've joined a hosting company the layout is not really how I was expecting. It's a shared hosting with basic FTP and no apparent built in task scheduler. The hosting company support is not very good and haven't been able to advise how I could do this so hoped to get help here on options before I consider changing company. [The hosting company starts with 1 and ends with 1 :)]

  I've a problem that I can't find the solution for on the web. I have a blog that has PR 1 and it's subdomain "aaaa.domain.com" that "domain.com" is a blog server. Now I want buy a domain "newdomain.com" and I want tell google webmaster to redirect the old subdomain to this new domain and send traffic to my new domain. I can't access .htaccess to use a 301 redirect. The only thing that I can do is put html code in the html. How can I do this? When I use "Change of Address" in google webmaster it say:"Restricted to root level domains only".

  Alright, I'm currently practicing schema.org microdata, and trying to find the best route for every site I build. I have found that i can piggyback itemprops on open graph meta tags. I would like to piggyback more itemprops on opengraph meta tags. However, schema.org requires you to change itemtypes to define all aspects of a "thing". Say I'm defining a LocalBusiness. Open graph has street address, locality, and region i'd like to piggyback on. I'd have to do something like: <html lang="en" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/LocalBusiness"> <head> ... <meta itemprop="name" content="Business Name" /> <meta property="og:url" itemprop="url" content="http://example.com" /> <meta property="og:image" itemprop="image" content="http://example.com/logo.png" /> <span itemprop="address" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/PostalAddress"> <meta property="og:street-address" itemprop="streetAddress" content="1234 Amazing Rd." /> <meta property="og:locality" itemprop="addressLocality" content="Greenfield" /> <meta property="og:region" itemprop="addressRegion" content="IN" /> </span> </head> Although there's more that can be added in, this is enough of an example to show what I'm trying to achieve. • command-line zip not working

  I have a Wordpress site on a Debian/Linux dedicated server, with a Backupbuddy plugin for making automatic backups. The plugin, however, gives an error 'Your server does not support command line ZIP'. My knowledge of Linux commands is very limited, but I managed installing zip with the command sudo apt-get install zip However, I still get the same error message. Plugin documentation mentions the problem could also be caused by disabled exec() or safe_mode - but exec isn't disabled, and safe_mode is off. Any ideas what might be causing this, or how to fix it? The only thing I could think of, is it might be caused by wrong permissions?

• YouTube custom thumbnails feature availability

  I've been trying to figure out this on my own for weeks, but now I give up. 'Custom thumbnails' feature on YouTube is such a controversial one, it was changed so much... so much that even FAQ on YouTube doesn't fully describe it's features (as I see). I have a YouTube channel for one of my websites. This YouTube channel is main marketing force for my website - it brings all the boys to my yard (I mean, website). So I have to use all the hacky-tricky stuff to increase my visibility on youtube. And damn, those custom thumbnails are giving me hard times... As far as I understand, this is current state of 'custom thumbnail' feature: "If your account is in good standing, you may have the ability to upload custom thumbnails for your video uploads."   I'm coming from a background of paying a hosting company X amount per month for a server. This server comes with IIS, WebsitePanel and Smartermail all bundled together. When I create a new domain using WebsitePanel it automatically creates my email account. All I then need to do is configure my DNS to point to the server. I've decided that it is more cost efficient to move to AWS / Azure. Has anyone come from a similar background and moved onto a cloud system? I'd be interested to know what you did regarding emails. So far, these are the suggestions I've seen: Use Google Apps for each domain Use something like Elastic Email to sent out emails Launch a new instance and host an email server on that The first option seems like quite a lot of manual configuration, the second one works good with outgoing emails but what about receiving? Option 3 would make it less cost effective. What is your experience?

  I have a few ideas that I think would be pretty game changing for online advertising and I would like to build my own network but I don't know where to start. I know it will take a lot of time for major publishers to get on board but I am more curious about the technical side. What language/database model and framework are modern ad networks built on? Basically I want to build an advertising network that registers views per page and allows publishers to manage the look of their own ads and let's the users interact with the ads. Is there any good information on doing something like this or any framework you can suggest to build on? I know this would get complicated pretty fast so if you have suggestions for ad networks that let you customize them heavily I would be glad to hear your suggestions.

• Is there any way to prevent Googlebar from breaking Friendly 404s

  This might be considered a continuation of this question. If I output HTML after my 404 header, It displays properly in IE and FF unless the user has Google bar instaled. If I try header('HTTP/1.x 404 Not Found'); header("Location: http://www.example.com/?content=404_error"); die(); then I'm getting 302 from the redirect. It seems to overrule the 404 Supposedly if your output is larger than 512 bytes, the toolbar isn't supposed to override the page, but It seems to do it anyway. I found a setting in Google's Toolbar that said "Provide suggestions on navigation errors". Turning that off provides me with the behaviour I want my visitors to experience. Does anyone know if Google provides a way for a developer to over-ride that setting for all visitors?
