• Cannot read/write a second drive in MBP 13

  I changed my original HDD for a SDD earlier this year and I just got one more SSD for my MBP 13 (2012) that I used to replace DVD drive. I'm using Mountain Lion. The SSD looks to be recognized allright, but I can't format it. Then I removed the main drive and tried the new one as the main drive and did the boot using a USB drive with MAC OS and everyhing worked as it should (like I just had one drive). However when I bring the first drive back together with the second they both show up but I can't use it. Seems like I have no permission, but when I look at it's properties it says I can read and write to it. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

• How to remove folder from Explorer's jump list

  I'm using Windows 7 and Windows Explorer some folders were added to the taskbar jump list (under the Frequent section) that no longer exist. When I try to remove those folders from the jump list (using context menu's "Remove from this list" option) nothing happens and the folders are still shown. When I try to access those non-existing folders windows prompts that selected item is not available and asks whether I want to remove it from the list. Regardless if I select "Yes" or "No" the folder still remains in the list.

• Linux cannot see Windows 7 partitions on install

  I've been trying to install Linux as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my Dell latitude e6510. It is currently running Windows 7 and I have used the MS disk tools to shrink the Win 7 NTFS partition to make room for Linux. The issue I'm having is that when I run Linux installers by boot from CD they see the entire hard drive as unallocated space. I have tried Ubuntu 10.10, Kbuntu 10.10 and Fedora 14 and they all have the same problem. I have also tried the Ubuntu "install in Windows" option and could not get it to work. EDIT: Booting Gparted 0.8.0 from a usb drive did not work. It reported the entire drive as unpartitioned.

  How can I prevent Internet Explorer 8 from opening multiple windows? I only want a single IE window, with multiple tabs. Sometimes a have multiple browser windows open and I don't like it when I have to choose which one I want to open in the Windows 7 taskbar.

  I have downloaded the Universal USB Installer and Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop as described on your site. I installed it to a 16Gb USB stick including the format option. Now when I try to boot from the stick into Ubuntu I get a couple of lines of script then a screen with EasUS Todo Backup with Backup. Recovery, Clone and Tools options, but no sign of Ubuntu starting. Where is the start Ubuntu option please? I can find no reference to EaseUS on your help pages.

  I have recently noticed wmpnetwk.exe using a more than usual amount of processor cycles. I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium on a Netbook. I'm guessing it's a feature of Windows Media player that recently got turned on, possibly because of a Windows update or accidental key combination. I don't usually use Media player that often. Does anyone know if it is a feature that has recently turned on, and if so, how do I turn it off ?

• Transferring to a SSD using Windows Explorer?

  I've just bought a new SSD (regretting this already) which I want to make my primary hard drive on my new computer. It's a fresh Windows 8 install, so I'm wondering if I can just copy the entire contents of C: onto my new SSD drive, or will I need to copy other things too such as boot records? I don't have a CD drive unfortunately (I removed it to put in the SSD - it's a very small HTPC) and I don't have any USB stick to make a bootable copy of Clonezilla or similar. UPDATE: I have decided to re-install Windows 8 from scratch onto the SSD, the problem is obtaining the serial key that is embedded into the BIOS. I actually have a spare, unused product key from my desktop I'm writing on now, but I'd rather not use that when I already have a valid key in my new HTPC :( Thanks :)

• Cisco AnyConnect VPN client - prevent connecting as work network

  From Windows 7 I'm using "Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client 3.0" to connect to our corporate network. Every time I establish the VPN connection Windows will set the type as "work network". I don't want this. So I go to "network and sharing center" and manually / interactively change it to "public network". But I have to repeat it for every new VPN connection. Is there any way to make Windows remember / persist this configuration? Can it be configured in the VPN client? Do our IT admins need to change something at server end? Motivation: A "work network" per default uses different firewall settings that allows for stuff like "network discovery" and "file shares". But I just need "remote desktop" (mstsc). Additional info: Our IT admins claimed this would be Windows default behaviour and there was nothing we could do about it: Windows would always initiate a VPN connection as "work network". Based on this statement I assume this is a "general" issue and went ahead posting here (at superuser.com).

• Changing the SkyDrive default path in Windows 8.1

  The deeper integration with SkyDrive is truly beneficial, but my laptop has a somewhat small primary drive (an 128 Gb MSATA SSD), and when possible, i try to move installations and other folders(like Documents and Downloads) to the secondary, 1 Tb drive. But i couldn't find any option to change the SkyDrive folder (it used to be in the secondary drive prior to the upgrade). Anyone have some idea how to change it? Thanks in advance! Edit 1: I've looked for an option to change this folder, to no avail. Really, it could only be a problem if i choose the option to keep my files offline, but it is exactly the option that i was looking for. Edit 2: Trying to install the old desktop app, the installer just quits silently.

• Converting ASUS Zenbook from Win8 to Win7.. do i need raid drivers?

  I've got an ASUS ZEnBook Prime, ASUS Zenbook UX301LA-XH72T 13.3" Touch Ultrabook and it runs 500GB SDD on RAID 0 configuration. This notebook is running Windows 8, and i desperately need to convert to Windows 7, but maintain RAID 0 configuration. My question is, will i have problems maintaining RAID 0 once converted? I would assume that the RAID 0 configuration is BIOS based and WINDOWS wont even know it, and will only see 1 drive regardless... right? Or will i need to do some weird Windows stuff to maintain RAID 0 config? = which doesn't make sense to me why it would.

  I've just gone through the Windows 8 upgrade process, and I am at the "Install now/Install by creating media/Install later from your desktop" stage. I've already got a sufficiantly big, empty partition, so can someone explain in fairly simple terms how to install onto the new partition? I would prefer not to burn the ISO onto a disk, it would be a lot easier if I could use a USB drive. (I've done quite a bit of googling, but all that I can find goes into endless detain about the partitioning, and spends very little time on putting the ISO on a booteable drive. How do I do this? Do I need to empty the drive? etc?)

  A short while ago, I had my hard drive die on me and at the same time my 1Tb backup drive! I took it back to the guy I bought the PC from and although the backup drive could not be recovered, he managed to get my machine working again by making a minor change in the BIOS which then got it out of that continuous loop it found itself in after multiple BSOD episodes. Everything seems to be working fine but yesterday when I tried to save something from Google Chrome, I got and insufficient permission problem and when I try to install software, I get an error of 2503. I have already followed the suggestions here but none of this worked for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated. EDIT: This started happening after I tried running a number of tests to get the machine working, including a previous restore point.

• Domain joining debate for Outlook 2010 with Exchange 2007 on windows SBS 2008 for a user on a laptop that will travel a fair amount of the time.

  I'm basically debating on whether or not to join the Domain on a Laptop, and was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. If the computer were staying in the office, its a no brainer. Join the domain. In this case I have a user who will come into the office a few days a week, and work remotely the rest of the time. There is a working VPN using OpenVPN client/server, but it's not site-to-site. My knee jerk reaction is to not join the domain, so that the user can have 1 profile that they always use. In this configuration, should Outlook work properly with the user's domain account, and should the shared calendar still work (at least once inside the VPN)? My concern with joining the domain would be the inability to login to it when elsewhere. Is there maybe a way around this with caching or something? Would creating a second local login make sense for a user like this in any way? If so, why not just skip the domain join to begin with? Any thoughts on or experiences with this would be appreciated.   Possible Duplicate: Recover Windows Opening Off Screen? I'm working with a HP Elitebook 8460p with Windows 8 using always 2 Monitors connected. And some Programs I'm always opening on the second screen (which windows does automatically). But now the problem: When the screens aren't connected (when I'm at home), some programs still open on the second screen (which does not exist anymore) and it's just not possible to move them to the main (only!) screen! • How do i allow non-root access to /ttyUSB0 on 12.04?

  Since i updated from 10.04 to 12.04, i am unable to acces the device connected in /ttyUSB0 if i dont have root access. To be more specific, i use a usb-to-serial com port converter to acces and configure Cisco equipment with a software called Putty. It happens that, since i upgraded to 12.04, Putty only sees the connected device when i run it as "gksudo putty". If not, it says "unable to connect to port /ttyUSB0". I have managed to change the permissions via chmod 666, and it works, but if i disconnect the usb and reconnect, it goes back to root only. How do i permanently allow non-root access? I have a clue it might be via udev rules, but i have NO IDEIA how to do it. obs. Manufacturer and drivers "PROLIFIC"

• VirtualBox: Ubuntu installed in Windows 7 OR Windows 7 installed in Ubuntu

  The title of the post sums up my questions: Is performance better, on average, assuming Ubuntu and Windows are used equally and for the same purposes, when Ubuntu is installed inside of Windows 7 or when Windows 7 is installed inside of Ubuntu using VirtualBox? My gut instinct tells me that because Ubuntu drivers are mostly open source, optimizations could be made when translating the virtual system calls of Ubuntu through Windows 7 that could not be made if it were flipped the other way around, because of the closed nature of Windows drivers. However, this is just a guess, and I have no evidence to back this up. I'm not sure, so I thought it would be best if I opened up this question to the experts of the community. • Does frequently formatting and reinstalling an operating system damage a hard drive?

  I tend to format and reinstall my operating system fairly frequently (about once a month). I apologize for my lack of technical terms, but I do not perform a "full format" (the type of formatting that zeros-out the existing data). Regardless, I know that most modern operating systems consume several GBs of data. Is doing this particular damaging to my hard drives? Would it matter whether I'm using a solid state drive (I'm not)?

  My USB Wi-Fi adapter tends to overheat and when it happens, it stops working until I pull it out and plug it in again. Since I often access my machine remotely from other places, when it happens, my machine gets inaccessible for me until I get home to fix it. I'm thinking, I have another USB Wi-Fi adapter in spare. Would it be possible to plug it in that too but tell Ubuntu to only use it when the primary Wi-Fi adapter becomes off-line? (I won't use the other Wi-Fi adapter as primary because it provides significantly less quality.)

  In early 2010 my motherboard freaked out, and I was able to drop in a new board and connect my two DVD drives that were initially bought in 2005. Tonight my new components arrived to build my next system, and I figured I'd just reuse the old DVD drives. Surprise, the long flat connector cable has no mate on the new motherboard. • How to access the SD card through my Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Phone?

  I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc phone and I cannot access its SD card through the USB cable provided. I have set the USB connection mode to MSC yet when I connect the phone to my computer I cannot see the SD card (or anything for that matter). The Disk Utility however, does see an SEMC Mass Storage device but it says that no media was detected. I have validated that the SD card works as I removed it from the camera and plugged it into a card reader and saw all the photos and files stored on it. I have validated that the phone works as I have connected it (in MSC mode) to my wife's Windows 7 computer. Can anyone please tell me how I can access the SD card on my phone.
