  • Visiting launchpad.net in browser causes icon to appear in launcher, how do I remove it?

    - by Ofer Nave
Using Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity. I think I agreed to install a Launchpad add-on in Firefox the first time I visited the site (launchpad.net), and ever since then, whenever I have an open tab in Firefox with any page on launchpad.net loaded, an icon appears in my Launcher desktop widget. If I right-click on the icon and select quit, it also closes the tab in Firefox. I've since uninstalled the Firefox add-on and rebooted, and it's still happening. How do I make it stop? It's so annoying Screenshot:

  • Is it really a security problem to have non secure assets on an ssl page?

    - by blockhead
My understanding is that this is just an example of being overly cautious, but if my checkout form contains an unsecure asset on it, that doesn't endanger anybody's credit card numbers from being caught by a man-in-the-middle. I'm asking this because every once in while, maybe because of cached content or whatnot, somebody writes in saying that they are seeing this "error" (even though there are no unsecure assets on my page), but they want an explanation. So yes, I can tell all about encryption and certificates and trust and men-in-the-middle. But what do I tell them about this. How do I convince them that the site is 100% safe (and if it isn't let me know that I'm mistaken!)

  • How can I neatly embed Flash in a page in a way that is cross-browser compatible?

    - by Mark Hatton
When I receive Flash objects from my designer, it comes with an example HTML page which includes both <object> tags and <embed> tags as well as a whole heap of JavaScript. If I copy and paste this code in to my webpage, it works, but the code looks a mess (and there is so much of it!). If I remove the extra code and try either just <embed> or <object> on their own, it works in some browsers, but not others. Is there a neat, minimal method that works in all the major browsers?

  • April 2012 Patch Tuesday

    - by TATWORTH
Next Tuesday, Microsoft will issue a number of critical patches. I urge you to apply the patches to your desktop PCs A.S.A.P. , then deploy to your test servers, test, get signoff and deploy to production.More information can be obtained at:http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9225883/Microsoft_slates_critical_Windows_Office_IE_patches_next_week_including_head_scratcher_?taxonomyId=17http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms12-aprhttp://www.scmagazine.com/microsoft-to-sew-up-11-security-vulnerabilities-next-week/article/235396/http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/microsoft-readies-patch-for-gaping-ie-browser-security-holes/11366

  • To canvas, or not to canvas, when building browser-based games?

    - by Letharion
Background: I have extensive development background, but the last time I coded a game was many years ago. My Javascript skills are quite limited, and I intend to improve them by building a simple game — Tetris, Pac-man, or something of that complexity level. Question: It seems to me that a fundamental choice I need to make is whether I should render on a <canvas> element or not. With a canvas, I have basic tools for rendering points, lines, and more complex things on top of that. Presumably there are, or will be, also various frameworks to help with this. Without a canvas, I could keep my objects in the DOM-tree, like a regular webpage, only quite complex, with many overlapping elements. Is one approach better than the other? Are they mutually exclusive? How do I know which to pick?

  • Is there a file browser like an ER diagram for viewing website physical path structures?

    - by EASI
I wish to know if there is a tool like this to replace windows explorer and similar in the work of managing files, specially those web-site structures that sometimes can get very big. I am asking it here because I sincerely do not know what terms to use in Google to find anything like it. It is like a diagram, but showing the tree directory structure and the contents of every folder at the same time, not just the one that is in focus.

  • Is there any kind of established architecture for browser based MMO games?

    - by black_puppydog
I am beginning the development of a broser based game in which players take certain actions at any point in time. Big parts of gameplay will be happening in real life and just have to be entered into the system. I believe a good kind of comparison might be a platform for managing fantasy football, although I have virtually no experience playing that, so please correct me if I am mistaken here. The point is that some events happen in the program (i.e. on the server, out of reach for the players) like pulling new results from some datasource, starting of a new round by a game master and such. Other events happen in real life (two players closing a deal on the transfer of some team member or whatnot - again: have never played fantasy football) and have to be entered into the system. The first part is pretty easy since the game masters will be "staff" and thus can be trusted to a certain degree to not mess with the system. But the second part bothers me quite a lot, especially since the actions may involve multiple steps and interactions with different players, like registering a deal with the system that then has to be approved by the other party or denied and passed on to a game master to decide. I would of course like to separate the game logic as far as possible from the presentation and basic form validation but am unsure how to do this in a clean fashion. Of course I could (and will) put some effort into making my own architectural decisions and prototype different ideas. But I am bound to make some stupid mistakes at some point, so I would like to avoid some of that by getting a little "book smart" beforehand. So the question is: Is there any kind of architectural works that I can read up on? Papers, blogs, maybe design documents or even source code? Writing this down this seems more like a business application with business rules, workflows and such... Any good entry points for that?

  • How can I control when Microsoft Security Essentials Updates Itself?

    - by David
I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) on a Windows Vista SP2 box. Every day in the 4 PM hour MSE updates itself: The green fortress icon in the notification area displays an animated download arrow, and my computer becomes unusably sluggish for five minutes (or more). I'm generally forced to take a coffee break or read a magazine. How can I control the time of day when this update occurs? Sometime after 9 PM would be ideal. Thanks.

We're running CI towards our WAS with wsadmin.bat The applications are updated with this command $AdminApp update ${projectName}EAR app {-operation update -update.ignore.new -contents {${artifactsDir}/${projectName}-${buildVersion}.ear}} This causes all the "Security role to user/group mapping"-settings to reset, even though all the other settings are preserved with the -update.ignore.new Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Does Geany or Gedit provide a browser protocol in the way Textmate does with txmt://?

    - by Rich
Textmate on the Mac can be bound to the txmt protocol, meaning that development frameworks (such as the Play Framework) can be configured to use this to display error messages. If a stacktrace appears, each line of the stacktrace is a URL of the format (I'm guessing): txmt:///home/myuser/projects/myproject/ProblemFile.java:123 (where 123 is the line number). Clicking this opens the file in Textmate. Is this possible with Gedit, Geany or another programmer's text editor?

  • Google Chrome Browser does not display the images from Local network or local host? [migrated]

    - by Arjang
While developing and testing a site on local network I have noticed that while IE/FireFox would display the images coming from URL's like "http:\mypc" or "http:\localhost" or ip adress on the netwrok , google chrome on Galaxy, Windows Machine, or google Android will not display the images. After having burned too many hours trying various CSS, image src tag, html document description tricks, I have given up. During my search I found (and lost) the link to chrome forums regarding this issue that seemed to say it is just so by users. Anyone has any more information on weather it is possible to view images on local host/computer name on netwrok or ip adress?

  • How to track site visitors across several browser sessions or computers using Google Analytics?

    - by Craig
If a site visitor clears cookies, uses various browsers or computers then Google Analytics will have a hard time detecting them as being by the same user. However since 95% of the site content is only available when logged in, so I should be able to identify multiple visits as the same user so long as they log in. How can I identify to Google that the visits are by the same user? (without breaking the Terms and Conditions)

EDIT: After reading the first answers I am under the impression of having made a mistake when including the "MMO" part into the title. The game will not be all fancy (i.e. 3D or such) on the client side and the logic will completely exist on the server. That is, apart from basic form validation for the user which will also be mirrored on the server side. So the target toolset will be HTML5, JavaScript, probably JQuery(UI). My question is more related to the software architecture/design of a system that enforces certain rules. Separation of ruleset and presentation One problem I am having is that I want to separate the game rules from the presentation. The first step would be to make an own module for the game "engine" that only exposes an interface that allows all actions to be taken in a clean way. If an action fails with regard to some pre/post condition, the engine throws an exception which is then presented to the user like "you cannot sell something you do not own" or "after that you would end up in a situation which is not a valid game state." The problem here is that I would like to be able to not even present invalid action in the first place or grey out the corresponding UI elements. Changing and tweaking the ruleset Another big thing is the ruleset. It will probably evolve over time and most definitely must be tweaked. What's more, it should be possible (to a certain extent) to build a ruleset that fits a specific game round, i.e. choosing different kinds of behaviours in different aspects of the game. This would do something like "we play it with extension A today but we throw out extension B." For me, this screams "Architectural/Design pattern" but I have no idea on who might have published on something like this, not even what to google for.

  • Turning off the Visual Studio &ldquo;Attach to process&rdquo; security warning&hellip;

    - by Shawn Cicoria
When you’re urnning under x64 you have to affect 1 addition spot in the registry to disable this warning – which clearly should only be done by folks that know what they’re doing. NOTE: affecting the registry can be harmful – do so at your own risk. • Landscape-like tool to distribute security upgrades to OS?

    - by Ichikata
i'm looking for an alternative to Landscape, Spacewalk (for RHEL), or CTL to perform a specific job. I need to control and apply OS upgrades on ubuntu systems, for 100+ servers, and so far i wasn't that lucky. I've tried Approx tool (similar to apt-proxy), but it just caches the content, and what i really need to do is set update milestones, apply the upgrades to QA servers, validate, then Stage environment, and so on to Production. I hope I was clear enough, any answer will be much appreciated.
