  • Blank page shown in Mozilla Firefox

    I have a jsf page which works perfectly fine[Both in IE and Mozilla Firefox] when the application is deployed locally. But i deploy it at the client place and I try to access the page in mozilla FF i get a blank page but it shows up properly in IE. Now if i do a remote desktop connection to the system where the application is deployed and try to access the same page i get to see the page correctly in both mozilla ff & IE Is this due to some sort of network issue specific to mozilla?

Since we are starting out without funding, price/performance and cost of licences/hardware is important. We definitely want to bring AJAX well present in the web interface. But apart from these, there's no further criteria I can come up with. I'm most experienced with C#/ASP.net, PHP and Java, in that order, but don't turn down other languages (Ruby, Python, Scala, etc.). How can we determine from the jungle of frameworks the one that suits best our goal? What other questions should we be asking ourselves? Reference material: articles, book recommendations, websites, etc.?

  • Rendering 'belongs_to" in index view question - Ruby on Rails

    I have created a simple blog application with Ruby on Rails. The applications consists of two tables, posts and comments. Comments belongs_to :post and posts has_many :comments. I created posts table with the following columns: title:string, body:text. I created the comments table with the following columns: body:text post_id:integer name:string email:string In the /views/comments/index.html.erb display I would like to show a listing of all comments w/ the post title as well. Currently, the index view only displays post_id, body, name, email. How do I replace the post_id column with the corresponding post title?   • Horizontally align rows in multiple tables using web user control

    I need to align rows in different tables that are layed out horizontally. I'd prefer to put the html code in a single web user control so I can create as many instances of that control as I want and lay them out horizontally. The problem is, the text in the rows needs to wrap. So some rows may expand vertically and some may not (see the example below). When that happens, the rows in the other tables aren't aligned horizontally. I know I can accomplish all this by using a single table, but that would mean I'd have to duplicate the name, address and phone html code instead of dynamically creating new instances of my user control (in reality there are many more fields than this, but I'm keeping it simple). Is there any way to do this whether with div's, tables or something else? Here's the problem: Mary Jane's address field expands 2 lines, causing her phone field to not align properly with John's and Bob's. Name: John Doe Name: Mary Jane Name: Bob Smith Address: 123 broadway Address: Some really long address Address: Short address Phone: 123-456 that takes up multiple lines Phone: 111-2222 Phone: 456-789 I'm not restricted in any way how to do this (other than using asp.net), but I'd prefer to use a single web control that I instantiate X times at design time (in this example, it's 3 times). However, in each area there is usually a set of tools that get recommended over and over, even though people might individually prefer one member over the others. Unix text mode code editors, for example, is an extremely contentious issue but no one can deny that most people will choose either vi or emacs. So, without criticising the alternatives, recommend me developement tools. Text editors for different platforms, version control systems, bug trackers, database engines, templating systems... whatever! What do you enjoy using every day?   • AJAX vs ActiveX/Flash for browser-based game

    I have been following the usage of JavaScript for the past few years, and with the release of extremely fast scripting engines (V8, SquirrelFish Extrene, TraceMonkey, etc.) the possibilities of JavaScript have increased dramatically. However, the usage share of Internet Explorer coupled with it's total lack of support for recent standards makes me want to drop a bomb on Microsoft's HQ, as it creates a huge amount of problems for any website. The game will need to be pretty dynamic client-side, with animations and other eye-candy things, but not a full-blown game like those that run directly in the OS using DirectX or OpenGL. However, this might be a little stretch for JavaScript and will certainly feel extremely slow in Internet Explorer (given that the current IE engine can be hundreds of times slower than SFX; gotta see what IE9 will bring), would it be better to just do the whole thing in Flash? I know this means requiring the plug-in AND I have no experience whatsoever with Flash (other than browsing YouTube :P). It also means I can't just output directly from PHP, I would have to use XML or some other format to pass data to it (JSON is directly integrated in JS and PHP can deal with it easily). Another idea would be to provide an alternative interface just for IE, though I don't know how (ActiveX maybe? or with Flash, then why not just provide it to all browsers) or totally not supporting it and requiring the use of other browsers, although this is plain stupid from a business perspective. So here am I, wondering what approach to take and thus asking for your advice. How should I build the client-side? AJAX in all browsers, Flash in all browsers or a mix (AJAX for "modern" browsers and something else for the "grandpa": IE).

    Quick Story: I started a new job where everyone funneled their questions to 'the geek'. Being an experienced developer, I can do most of my assignments without consultation with the geek - thinks such as how to select the top 10 rows in a table. Question: Is there a preferred way of handling these cases without offending the existing geek while ensuring the best solution gets implemented? My issue is the the existing geek is very young and makes a lot of mistakes, but still sounds authoritative because the other coders are just out of school and don't know better.

    I'm using Dark GDK and C++ to create a simple 2d game. I'm rotating an object but it rotates from the top left corner of the sprite. I have the following variables available: PlayerX PlayerY PlayerWidth PlayerHeight RotateAngle (360 x 0) Is there an algorithm that will modify the pivot point of the sprite, preferable to the center?     I'm trying to make a web based media player using the HTML5 audio element implemented in Firefox 3.5 and Chrome. Reading Mozillas documentation, omitting the autobuffer attribute should result in the audio src not being requested: if specified, the audio will automatically begin being downloaded, even if not set to automatically play. This continues until the media cache is full, or the entire audio file has been downloaded, whichever comes first However, on the server side I notice the files are being requested anyway.   • Texture allocations being doubled in iPhone OpenGL ES

    The below couple lines are called 15 times during initialization. The tx-size is reported at 512 everytime, so this will allocate a 1mb image in memory 15 times, for a total of 15mb used.. However, I noticed instruments is reporting a total of 31 allocations! (15*2)+1 glTexImage2D(GL_TEXTURE_2D, 0, GL_RGBA, tx-size, tx-size, 0, GL_RGBA, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, spriteData); free(spriteData); Likewise in another area of my program that allocates 6 256x256x4 (256kB) textures.. I see 13 sitting there. (6*2)+1 Anyone know what's going on here? It seems like awful memory management, and I really hope it's my fault. Just to let everyone know, I'm on the simulator.

  • How to get all paths in drupal install

    Hi, I need to write a module that gives me a page will all possible paths in a drupal install, including orphaned pages. (site map won't work for that). I can query the url_alias table for aliases, and I can query the menu_router table for all paths, even ones set in page/feed displays in views. But, variable paths (those with arguments) get interpreted at run-time. So, is there a way to get all possible paths in a drupal install, including dynamic paths and orphans? It's catch22. I have to know all the urls ahead of time to get them.

  • Using Javascript in Google Web Optimizer Page Sections

    Is it possible to use Javascript in the content of a page section variation? I want different variations to make different Javascript function calls, so I have variation content like: Variation 1 <script type="text/javascript">my_func('abc');</script> Variation 2 <script type="text/javascript">my_func('def');</script> However, when I preview my page, I can't verify that my_func(content){ alert(content); } is actually being run. Does GWO not support JS content, or am I missing something?

  • How do I find Microsoft APIs?

    I'm a java programmer, and if I see something that: I don't know about or just want to find a method description without opening an ide or am on support I type java [classname] into google, and there it is. If I try this crazy stunt for C# I'll come up with a whole heap of tutorials (how do I use it etc). If I manage to get to MSDN, I have to wade through a page describing every .net technology to see how their syntax references the same object, and then I have to find the appropriate page from there ([class name] Constructor) for example. This is even more pronounced, because I don't have Visual Studio, so I've got nothing to make it easier. There must be something I'm missing or don't know... how does this situation work for Microsoft developers? how can I make my life easier/searches better? are there techniques that work no matter what computer I'm on (e.g. require no computer setup/downloads) Notes It could be thought that java is just "java", but it's just that the java apis are only referenced/defined in the core language. For all the other languages on the JVM, it's assumed that you will just learn the correct syntax to use the java apis. I presume that .Net only lists a whole heap of languages as the api classes are actually different and have different interfaces capabilities (or some approximation of this presumption). Edit While searching msdn works... in the java space I can type 'java [anyclass]' and it will generally be found... whether it's a java core api or a third party library

  • How do you energize yourself when working alone on a project?

    I am working in an environment with a very small team (3 developers only) and each of us have been assigned a different project, without counting support tasks. I know this is a bad business practice and that we should all work on a single project at a time, and then move on to the next one (Already explained to the management on how much it sucks). So don't answer me that we should work all together on one project at a time. Energizing the work when in a team is mostly pair programming we did that when less project were thrown at us and that was great. What I would like to know is how you energize your work when working alone on a project. Do you follow any particular practice?

While No.1 framework is Intraweb, there is a lot of interest around ExtJS, that has 2 incarnations: 1) the opensource ExtPascal 2) the closedsource Raudus Now the products are different, Raudus never supports the latest ExtJS version (while ExtPascal does because as far as I read it "almost automatically updates itself to the latest ExJS version"), Raudus "seems" much RAD (much similar to Intraweb from the RAD point of view). Anyway why chose one or the other? Why Raudus since it is free cannot become Open Source?

  • How do you handle very old browsers on your site?

    Hi. We have a non-profit web site that got about 5 million hits in May. Of those, about 5,700 were from IE 5.x or lower; about 4,000 were from folks with Netscape 4.x or lower. We know that the current site's layout works for newer browsers and we're testing it on IE6 as well (along with Chrome, Opera, Safari, and Firefox). How do you handle the folks with the older browsers? Because of jQuery libraries and such, the pages might not function correctly on those old browsers. Is there an easy way to show a text-only version on browsers that can't handle the CSS and jQuery goodies? How do large sites handle this sort of thing? I've used the @embed to hide the stylesheet from Netscape 4.x, but not sure beyond that.
