• OpenWonderland goes to Europe

  Past my day job, I also have the privilege of being Vice President and Member of the Board of the OpenWonderland Foundation (Formerly Project Wonderland for ex-Sun folks). It's great to see the progress Wonderland is making as the platform-of-choice for open source collaborative 3-D virtual worlds built in Java. The upcoming and first european IE Summit in Madrid will show a number of projects and innovations for virtual and game-based learning. I also dropped Ultan a note after learning about the Gamification of Oracle Apps to see if collaborating with kids and schools is an area we can work together on to improve kids engagement and learning experiences online. Which server-side language will be most suitable for our purpose? We could target the following audience: - Personal sites. - Serious small-medium companies (to sell prducts such as Help-Desks, Forms,etc.) - Restaurants (to sell online order web applications). We would like to - attract as many customers as possible. - provide updates for our prodcuts (for our customers). - make our products easy to use. There are number of open-source frameworks and languages that has potential to handle our business problems (like Django, Python, Java, etc..) • Prevent Nautilus from generating thumbnails for video files larger than 5 MB?

  If I set in Nautilus preferences that it should generate thumbnail previews only for files larger than 10 MB, then this only works for pictures. Nautilus still keeps generating thumbnails for videos and pdf files. Even if a video file is 500 MB. It should only generate thumbnails for video files less than 10 MB as set in the preferences. Same goes for pdf. I have many pdf files that are larger than 50 MB. I don't want Nautilus to generate thumbnails for these, only for small sized pdf. How can I make Nautilus to obey the Previews preferences? Nautilus 3.4.2 Ubuntu 12.04.1, 64bit

• What kind of support does Canonical provide on a business level?

  I was wondering about the support for Ubuntu in general? If a (small/large)business is running Ubuntu, what type of issues does Canonical help out with? examples: if a business is running a windows app, via wine does canonical help out with that when a business is running software that is not installed via the software but via PPA(stable/beta) and or downloaded manually. Some examples apps libreoffice/handbrake/openshot etc... etc... does Canonical give support when those app have issues? when a business is trying to migrate from lotes notes/outlook to thunderbird? sorry if this is a bit vague, but i don't really know much about support... be as detailed possible! • How important is to avoid name collisions between libraries belonging to different domains?

  I have written a small open source Java library for facilitating conversions between different types of objects (in the style of Google's gson, but quite more general). It seems to me that a nice natural name for my library is JConverter, after browsing in the web to see if another library with the same name already exists, I found a library with the same name for Joomla. My concrete question is: How important is to avoid naming collisions when creating an open source library if an existing library with the chosen name already exists in a complete different domain ? (in my concrete case, these are libraries even implemented for different languages).

• Ubercart for 'serious' ecommerce?

  Im big Drupal fan, and some very high profile sites use Drupal which also suggests that its a good system. Can the same be said for Ubercart? Ive used it for some small e commerce sites purely because I know Drupal. It seems to lack some basic features and also relies on javascript. I dont know of any high profile e commerce sites using it. My productivity would take a big hit if I had to learn a new e commerce platform and also if I couldn't use my favorite CMS with it, but do I have a choice? If not I guess I can hope that Drupal 7's Commerce module will be an improvement. Thanks

• EAV - is it really bad in all scenarios?

  I'm thinking to use EAV for some of the stuff in one of the projects, but all questions about it in stackoverflow end up to answers calling EAV an anti pattern. But I'm wondering, if is it that wrong in all cases? Let's say shop product entity, it has common features, like name, description, image, price, etc., that take part in logic many places and has (semi)unique features, like watch and beach ball would be described by completely different aspects. So I think EAV would fit for storing those (semi)unique features? All this is assuming, that for showing product list, it is enough info in product table (that means no EAV is involved) and just when showing one product/comparing up to 5 products/etc. data saved using EAV is used. I've seen such approach in Magento commerce and it is quite popular, so may be there are cases, when EAV is reasonable?

• Efficient skeletal animation

  I am looking at adopting a skeletal animation format (as prompted here) for an RTS game. The individual representation of each model on-screen will be small but there will be lots of them! In skeletal animation e.g. MD5 files, each individual vertex can be attached to an arbitrary number of joints. How can you efficiently support this whilst doing the interpolation in GLSL? Or do engines do their animation on the CPU? Or do engines set arbitrary limits on maximum joints per vertex and invoke nop multiplies for those joints that don't use the maximum number? Are there games that use skeletal animation in an RTS-like setting thus proving that on integrated graphics cards I have nothing to worry about in going the bones route?

  hello, I'm a python & Qt programmer, and my daily job is create small PC GUI programs ship with hardware devices. the problem is, My job is simple, read/write data to device by using serial port(pyserial), display and edit data(PyQt + PyQwt), that's all. although I'm a linux user, my program is running under windows XP, but thanks to PyQt, I can still develop under linux. And I'm always afraid of being replaced by the people cheaper and younger than me in the future. (I'm 26 now.. not too much time for playing..) So I need improve myself, and make me more competitive in the global market, and I like programming, and want coding till the end of my life. any roadmap suggestion?

• Hotel Reservation Request Booking Paypal PHP

  I'm making a website for a small hotel in php. The hotel owners want a reservation system that uses paypal. They want people to see a calendar and choose a date to make a reservation. If the day has vacancy, they want the user to request booking a room. This would then require the hotel owner to accept the purchase. I have not worked on a project that has this "request to purchase" method of buying with paypal. Is this possible? Does anyone know of an open php system that handles this? THANKS :)

  Doing some reading on Stack Overflow, I've found a lot of information suggesting that proper organization of a file system is crucial to a well-written web app. One of the key pieces of evidence is high-frequency references to "separation of concerns" in questions related to keeping programs organized. Now, I've found some information on organizing file systems (Filesystem Hierarchy Standard) from 2004. It raises only two concerns: first, the standard's a bit dated, so I believe it may be possible to do better given the changes in technology over the past 8 years; second, and most important, my application is very small compared to an entire Linux distro. I think that the file system should be organized very differently because of that. Here's what I'm looking at, currently: /scripts, /databases, /www -> /dev, /production -> login, router, admin pages, /sites -> content types, static pages /modules, /includes, /css, /media -> /module-specific-media

  Are there any good books or other resources on how to sell agile to your clients? Our development shop would really like to do more agile projects but we have a problem getting clients on board. Many clients want a budget and a deadline. It's hard to sell a client on an agile project when our competitors do come up with waterfall-based fixed deadlines and fixed prices. We know their fixed numbers are bad, but the client doesn't know that. So, we end up looking bad to the client because we can't fix the price or a deadline but our competitors can. If I were working on a smaller game, like a copy of "Space Invaders," I'd have no problem structuring it like this: Main Control Class Graphics Class Player Class Enemy class I don't understand how I'd do this for larger projects like my economy game. Do I create a country class that contains a bunch of towns? Do the towns contain a lot building class, most contain classes of people?   I did a small coding mistake and google indexed my site wrongly. this is correct form: https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/TENGA-CUP-DOUBLE-HOLE but google index my site like this : https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx first I fixed the problem and made a site map and only correct link in it. now I checked webmaster tools and I see this; Total indexed 513 Not selected 544 Blocked by robots 0 so I think this can be caused by double indexes and they looks not selected makes my data not selected. I want to know how to fix this "https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx" links. should I fix in code or should I connect to google to reindex my site. If I should redirect wrong/duplicate links to correct ones, what the way should be? thanks for your time in advance.

• Why doesn't max-height hold in Mobile safari in landscape mode?

I have an image inside a container, and to allow for multiple screen sizes, I am setting all dimensions in % rather than pixels. in iphone portrait mode, everything is fine.   My computer freezes after some minutes while watching dvb tv from kaffeine but only when i use the cpu scaling utilities to enter cpu on performance mode. It freezes completely repeating a small sound loop from tv. cant go to terminal etc. I have a phenom II 3,40 ghz dualcore cpu , but i unlocked the other two cores so now its quadcore. On Windows i don't have any problems and i use the performance mode all the time and never breaks. I'm really dissapointed....

  I work in a small sized software/web development company. I have gotten into the habit of optimizing prematurely, I know it is evil and promotes bad code... But I have been working at this firm for a long while and I have deemed this as a necessary evil. It has never caused me an issue so far in the past, but it might if I get partners or a successor.
