• What is Ubuntu's Definition of a "Registered Application"?

  I've run into this a few times when installing apps from source, and during the occasional hack with update-alternatives. So far, it's only been a minor annoyance (ie, not got in the way of the end-goal) but it's now a frustration as it's pointing to a hole in my knowledge-base... so when I get a message that 'foo' is "not a registered application" (or I can't use foo's default icon cuz Ubuntu has no knowledge of 'foo'): (1) what defines a "registered application"? (2) how can I define an application installed from source (and likely residing in $HOME/bin/app-name) such that it packs the same functionality as a package installed from a .deb? (if the solution is not self-evident from answer 1) Example: I download and unpack daily dev builds of sublime-text-2 to /home/tom/bin/sublime-text-2. I've created a *.desktop file with appropriate shortcuts, etc. But the icon for sublime cannot be display in any launcher even if I provide a full pathname to the option. The solution is to install a 2nd instance of sublime from a deb package. When I install sublime-text-2 from a .deb package, it installs under /usr/bin && /usr/lib, the installed .desktop file is stored under /usr/share/applications, and the relevant line reads: icon=sublime_text. Where's the linkage I'm missing? Somehow Ubuntu knows how to exact the icon from sublime_text in the latter, but not in the former (again, even with a full path provided).

• How important do you find exception safety to be in your C++ code?

  Every time I consider making my code strongly exception safe, I justify not doing it because it would be so time consuming. Consider this relatively simple snippet: Level::Entity* entity = new Level::Entity(); entity->id = GetNextId(); entity->AddComponent(new Component::Position(x, y)); entity->AddComponent(new Component::Movement()); entity->AddComponent(new Component::Render()); allEntities.push_back(entity); // std::vector entityById[entity->id] = entity; // std::map return entity; To implement a basic exception guarantee, I could use a scoped pointer on the new calls. This would prevent memory leaks if any of the calls were to throw an exception. However, let's say I want to implement a strong exception guarantee. At the least, I would need to implement a shared pointer for my containers (I'm not using Boost), a nothrow Entity::Swap for adding the components atomically, and some sort of idiom for atomically adding to both the Vector and Map. Not only would these be time consuming to implement, but they would be expensive since it involves a lot more copying than the exception unsafe solution. Ultimately, it feels to me like that time spent doing all of that wouldn't be justified just so that the a simple CreateEntity function is strongly exception safe. I probably just want the game to display an error and close at that point anyway. How far do you take this in your own game projects? Is it generally acceptable to write exception unsafe code for a program that can just crash when there is an exception?

• "Failed to create swap space" error during installation

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu for the past two days or so, but I've been running into a problem: every time I run the installation program on the LiveCD, I always get the same (or a very similar) error: "Failed to create Swap space The creation of swap space in partition #3 of SCSI5 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." So far, I've run DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) on my HDD once, to make absolutely sure that everything on it had been erased. Then, I simply put in the LiveCD, and let it run the automated install. I get the above error directly after I tell it to automatically partition the HDD (it will work for a second or so, then this will pop up), forcing me back to the screen that lets me choose whether I want to automatically or manually partition the HDD. Well, after failing to install the software manually, I did a little research and learned enough about partitioning Linux to use the 'Manual partitioning' option. I partitioned the HDD as follows (it's a 1TB drive): /home - (the rest)- ext2, / - 20GB - ext2, /boot - 100MB - ext2, /swap - 8GB /EFIboot - 40MB The only difference when I tried this method was that I got THIS message: "Failed to create Swap space The creation of swap space in partition #2 of SCSI5 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." Basically, the only difference was that there was now a '2' instead of a '3'. If I may ask, what exactly am I doing wrong? I've tried looking around the internet (that's basically all I've done for the last two days), but no one seems to have the same problem that I have, and I've tried most of the solutions for similar problems (DBAN, formatting partitions in ext2 format, etc). The only thing I haven't tried is using the terminal to manually partition the HDD...and I actually DID try to do this, but I wasn't able to get past 'su' 's password demand, so I wasn't able to use the terminal. • Can not access Internet (DNS names do not resolve) after update today

  I have been using Precise for a few weeks now for work with no problem. Today, I am not able to access any website using either wired or wireless connections. I installed the updates today which included nautilus, xserver, and a new kernel (3.2.0-24). After restarting I no longer was able to browse the Internet using firefox or chrome. Trying to ping google in terminal gives ping: unknown host google.ca I have tried: Connecting to wireless or wired networks (both working on other machines) Restart the machine and boot with previous Kernel Manually configure opendns on my wired connection Restart the network and the laptop and the wireless card Without any success so far. I am not sure where to go next. Please let me know the cause of the issue or help me troubleshoot it. Note that the laptop does receive an ip address, and it can ping ip address of google.ca (74.125.127.94) but not the domain name, or any domain name for that matter. This system was upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 more two weeks ago.

• VirtualBox: Why are some USB devices disabled?

  Overview: My Host OS is Ubuntu 10.10 and guest OS is WinXP on the VirtualBox version downloaded from Oracle including "VirtualBox 4.0 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack" so that USB passthrough works. This works in general (I was able to back up my iPhone to iTunes in the guest OS), but some devices aren't available even though they're ptrovided in the VirtualBox settings. Specifics: In the VirtualBox settings for the guest OS, there's the part where you can select which of your USB devices should be visible to the guest OS. I've selected several devices including the iPhone. So far so good. Then an iOS upgrade came along; my iPhone is now in DFU mode (or recovery mode?) and represents itself not as "iPhone" but as "iPhone (DFU mode)". I have now also added this device to the list of USB devices that the guest OS should see -- but it doesn't see this device. Questions: Am I right in expecting that the guest OS ought to see the DFU device when I add it in the VirtualBox settings? What steps do I need to take so that the guest OS will really see the DFU device?

• Platformer Enemy AI

  I'm currently developing a platformer shooter. The game is multiplayer and while my net code could use some real work I have put that off for the time, so currently I'm trying to implement the AI. The game is pretty simple; Players run around on a map filled with a X amount of zombies that try to eat their brains, classic and overused I know. Weapons spawn at random intervals around the map. The problem is that the zombies, when they find their pray the have to follow it for some while.. And here is the problem, running the AI navcode seems to take for ever. So here is the ideas I have come up with so far Have the AI update at different intervals with a maximum of Y ms with no updates. Have the zombies assigned to groups of zombies. One is appointed the leader of the group who finds the way to the player - the rest just follows the leader. If the leader dies another one of the zombies in the group is appointed president of the zombie swarm. If there is less than five zombies in a group they try to meet up with other zombies.(Aka they are assigned to a different group and therefor a new leader) Multi-threading option one or two? For navigation I have some kinda navmesh(since the game is not tile-based) that tells the zombies where they can walk etc. If anyone else got some ideas on how to do navigation I would love some input. For LoS(zombie - player) I have split the map into grids. If the players grid is connected to the zombies grid(if I go with option two I would only need to check if leader zombies grid is connected to player, aka less checks) - if they are connected and there is more than 250ms since last check do a raytrace.. This is my first time programming AI so input on any field is appreciated.

• Emulator PCSX Reloaded - Fullscreen not working on Unity

  I have an older PS1 console with a couple of games I bought some years ago. On my pc, I'm using PCSX Reloaded - the best PS1 emulators for Linux I found so far. But I'm having a little issue on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise. I'm using Unity 3D and I'm trying to run some of my original PS1 games on PCSX Reloaded. Everything works nicely, except for fullscreen. I toggle fullscreen and specify maximum resolution for my monitor, but on fullscreen mode, both left and top unity bars aren't getting hidden. I tried changing between other graphic modes like Gnome Classic and Gnome Classic w/o Effects. On both, PCSX shows bars in fullscreen mode, so it isn't an Unity-specific issue, but an emulator problem. It's a bit annoying play games this way, so basically I'm running games on window mode for now. I'm using default OpenGL graphic plugin on this emulator. I tried changing to X11 graphic plugin and fullscreen worked, but graphics on X11 plugin aren't as good as OpenGL one. Anyone know a way to get fullscreen working on PCSX using OpenGL plugin? Or maybe another graphic plugin w/ OpenGL support.

• Linux - Scriptable email client?

  Hi, I'm writing a simple UI for the visually impaired using a speech synthesizer. I've looked all over the internet for an email client which I can script to fit these purposes but to no avail. I believe several CLI email clients(eg MUTT) allow sending emails with command line arguments only. But I've yet to find a client that can download the emails, decode them and then dump them to a text file. The best candidate so far seems to be mailx, but it seems like it needs quite a lot of babysitting to fit my needs. Any suggestions for scripting-friendly email clients? Am I missing something fundamental about MUTT? Are there any libraries/programs that help me decode the MIME encoding used in todays emails from a maildir? Should I just bite the bullet and write a script for mailx? Thanks in advance.

• Why does my SQL Server use AWE memory? and why is this not visible in RAMMap?

  We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit) 8GB server where, according to Sysinternals RAMMap, 2GB of memory is allocated using AWE. As far as I understood, this means that these pages stay in physical memory and are never pushed out. This causes other apps to be pushed out of physical memory. In RAMMap, on the Physical Pages tab, the Process column is empty for all of the AWE pages. We run SQL Server on that box, but (through SQL Server Management Studio, under Server Properties - Memory, under Server memory options) it says is configured not to use AWE. However, when stopping SQL Server, the AWE pages are suddenly gone. So it really is the culprit. So I have three questions: Why does RAMMap not know/show that a SQL Server process is responsible for that AWE memory? Why does SQL Server Management Studio say that AWE memory is not used? How do we make configure SQL Server to really not use AWE memory?

• Is mocking for unit testing appropriate in this scenario?

  I have written around 20 methods in Java and all of them call some web services. None of these web services are available yet. To carry on with the server side coding, I hard-coded the results that the web-service is expected to give. Can we unit test these methods? As far as I know, unit testing is mocking the input values and see how the program responds. Are mocking both input and ouput values meaningful? Edit : The answers here suggest I should be writing unit test cases. Now, how can I write it without modifying the existing code ? Consider the following sample code (hypothetical code) : public int getAge() { Service s = locate("ageservice"); // line 1 int age = s.execute(empId); // line 2 return age; // line 3 } Now How do we mock the output ? Right now , I am commenting out 'line 1' and replacing line 2 with int age= 50. Is this right ? Can anyone point me to the right way of doing it ?

  I want to let my IAM users to setup their own MFA devices, through the console, is there a single policy that I can use to achieve this? So far I can achieve this through a number of IAM policies, letting them list all mfa devices and list users (so that they can find themselves in the IAM console and ... I am basically looking for a more straight forward way of controlling this. I should add that my IAM users are trusted users, so I don't have to (although it will be quite nice) lock them down to the minimum possible, so if they can see a list of all users that is ok.

• Choosing between PHP and Java

  I've recently started University, studying Computing and IT. My Uni focuses on Java. My study will consist of mathematics, 'boring' IT related stuff and several Java units such as: -Software development with Java, -Object-oriented Java programming, -Relational databases: theory and practice (using Java), -Developing concurrent distributed systems (using Java), -Software engineering with objects (using Java). I'm trying to determine whenever I should focus on Java and self study it in my free time so that I can actually learn and become a competent Java programmer by the time I graduate, or, only do enough Java to get the degree but in my free time self study PHP and related web technologies. Job market in my area appears to be balanced for the two, salary and availability wise. Regardless of which patch I'd take getting a job should not be a problem however Java does seem to pay almost insignificantly more. In terms of my interest and career expectations, I don't have anything specific planned. I very much enjoy writing code but I don't really care what kind. So far I equally enjoyed writing C, AutoIT, vb.net, PHP and even Java. Basically, I'm happy as long as I get to type in code (be it low level programming or web back-end scripting). So the question really is, would my Uni and their Java focus profit me should I choose PHP? Or should I buy what my university is selling and stick to Java like a fly sticks to poop...?   I my shell script, I am trying to remove password prompt for scp command (as given in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/459182/using-expect-to-pass-a-password-to-ssh/459225#459225) and this is what I have so far :- #!/usr/bin/expect spawn scp $DESTINATION_PATH/exam.tar $SSH_CREDENTIALS':/'$PROJECT_INSTALLATION_PATH expect "password:" send $sshPassword"\n"; interact On running the script, I am getting errors spawn: command not found send: command not found interact: command not found I was also getting error expect: command not found also, then I realised the path to expect was not correct and expect was not installed at all. So, I did yum install expect, corrected the path and the error was gone. But not able to remove the other 3 errors still.

  Occasionally, I'd like to share a blog I've discovered or that someone has passed along to me. Criteria are few, but in a nutshell, it must be: Java-related. (Doh!) Interesting. A good blog is exciting to read at some level, whether due to perspective, eye-catching writing, or technical insight. It doesn't have to read like a Stephen King novel, but it should grab you somehow. Technically deep or technically broad. A site that dives deeply, quickly is a great reference for particular topics/tasks. On the other hand, one that covers a lot of ground at a high-but-still-technical level can be a handy site to visit occasionally as well. Both are what I consider "bookmarkable", but for different reasons. Drumroll, please... With that in mind, this Blog Spotlight is cast upon mkyong.com, a site I stumbled across that offers a little bit of everything for various Java dev audiences. The title indicates the site is for "Java web development tutorials", and indeed it does have these: JSF, Spring, Struts, Hibernate, JAX-WS, JAX-RS, and numerous other topics are addressed to varying degrees. The site isn't devoted exclusively to server-side tutorials, though. Recent posts include mobile development topics, and the links at the bottom of the page connect you to reference pages and other useful sites. I've poked around through a couple of the tutorials and, while they won't take you from "zero to hero", they do seem to provide a nice overview of the subject at hand. They also offer an occasional explanatory comment that is missing from far too many texts, sites, and doc pages. It's not a perfect site, but I like it. The Bottom Line mkyong.com offers a nice "summary site" of server-side tutorials, mobile dev posts, and reference links. Check it out! All the best,Mark

• Why is the size of antivirus greater than that of anti malware? [on hold]

  Recently my computer was attacked by different kinds of worms and my computer was slowed down. So I tried to remove them by installing Avast free antivirus. The worms were copying themselves rapidly. But after installing avast, I observed it only blocked new copy of the worms to be created but could not delete the already created worms, even it could not find worms in a good amount. Then I downloaded Malwarewbyte Anti Malware and to my surprise I found out its service was way too better than Avast antivirus. It detected and deleted almost 2065 worms and malwares from my computer and now my computer is doing fine. As far as I know, anti malware functionality is also included in Antivirus, But then also its performance is poor. Now my question is if performance of antiviruses are meat to be poor than Antimalwares, then why the size of Avast is 179Mb and the size of Malwarebyte is 9.81mb?

• How to upgrade PHP to 5.3 on latest MAMP

  Hi all, I've been struggling with this for quit a while... Googling all sorts of things has brought up anything useful so far. I have MAMP 1.8.4 install on my MBP running snow leopard - i want to upgrade to PHP to 5.3 to fit to my new job's working environment.. however i can't seem to get it to work. I've tried downloading the 5.3 source and compiling it using's MAMP's ./configure statement but i always get an error regarding apxs and a possibly missing config_vars.mk file from that i understand. Has anyone been able to do this successfully? If so how? What were to happen if i were to drop the --with-apxs from the configure line? would it break the apache/php ? • Hide Content for Printing

  Current, our users can view SCORM contents using frames. We would like to disable print or hide the content for printing. So far, we have tried: @media print { body { display:none } frameset {display:none} } The above line worked very inconsistently. For example, using IE8, the print preview does not show the content but when printing without preview it shows the content. Ideally we would like to disable printing altogether when our users launch any contents. If this can't be done, we would like to hide the print content so the users will print a blank page. Additionally, we would also like to disable the print screen option if possible. Please help!!!

• bash code in rc.local not excuting after bootup

  Does anyone know why a system would not execute the script code within rc.local on bootup? I have a post configuration bash script that I want to run after the initial install of VMware ESX (Red Hat), and for some reason it doesn't seem to execute. I have the setup to log its start of execution and even its progress so that I can see how far it gets in case it fails at some point, but even when I look at that log, I am finding that didn't even started the execution of the script code. I already checked to see that script has execution permissions (755), what else should I be looking at? • Is there an easy way to read blu-rays on Windows?

  Some time ago, I bought my parents a computer dedicated to medias (mostly photographs and movies trough DLNA). My father asked me if he could read blu-ray on it, so I bought a blu-ray reader but I can't find a software to do the playback. I installed PowerDVD (a free version we got with a Blu-Ray) but it seems it now requires a (non-free) upgrade. Even if it were free, I hardly see my parent do the upgrade by themselves as they barely understand how computers work. I thought I would find a free software (something like VLC, but for blu-rays) but so far had no luck. Do you guys have a software to suggest that would solve my issues ? It should run on Windows Vista, shouldn't require an update every monday, or at least a free one. Thank you very much.

• IPsec Policy Agent flip-flopping demand start/auto start in Windows Server 2008?

  Looking through the event logs on my web server I noticed a strange pattern. The following events have been occurring over and over again, always back to back: The start type of the IPsec Policy Agent service was changed from demand start to auto start. The start type of the IPsec Policy Agent service was changed from auto start to demand start. Each one produces event id 7040 from the Service Control Manager. And sometimes this will happen 20 times in one minute. Any idea what would cause this? I've been trying to pinpoint an intermittent performance problem for the past several days and this is the most peculiar thing I've found so far. I'm running Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008, and ASP.NET 3.5 w/ MVC 1.

• How to pass a filename by drag-and-drop to a shortcut in Windows

  I have a program program.exe and a document document.txt, and to open the document, I can drag document.txt onto program.exe. So far so good. Now I want to call it with a command-line parameter -param so that the full command line is program.exe -param document.txt Unfortunately, I can't do this with drag and drop, so I need to fire up cmd and type in the command manually. This takes too long, and I need an easier way. How can I create a shortcut that I can drop the file onto, and have it call the program with the command-line parameter? I tried setting the shortcut to program.exe -param "%1", but that didn't work, because it appeared to pass only the file name, and not the path, and since the current directory was the one with the program and not the one with the document, it couldn't find the document.

• Email client supporting multiple accounts

  I've been using Microsoft Outlook for a very long time, although one thing that has bugged me is how multiple email accounts are handled. As far as I can tell, there isn't a set and straightforward way of managing multiple accounts in one instance of outlook. For example, when I create an email, saving it as a draft will by default dump it into the first personal folder that I have open, which in my current case, is not where I want it. I would like all trash, spam, drafts, contacts, etc. etc. to be handled on a PF by PF basis. Now to my question: Is there a way to accomplish the task of email account "segregation" in Outlook (2007 is my current version), or is there another client that handles this in a more organized fashion? Note: I don't use most of the features in outlook (I hardly even need special formatting for my messages), I generally just send and read mail, and get a few attachments, so leaving Outlook wouldn't be too much of a stretch for me.

• Are folders and filenames starting with "icon" illegal in SMB?

  Are five letter filenames starting with "icon" illegal in SMB? I just got a Drobo FS, in part to back up the computers in my house, and it does not accept folders named 'icons', 'iconv', or indeed I tried a bunch of other icon plus one letter names. I got errors on creation of these folders although now I don't remember the exact error. It has been confirmed with Drobo support that they "veto" files and folders named like this, due to them being illegal in the SMB spec. My Google skills so far have not been sufficient to turning any information on this up, however, so I wonder if anyone knows what's up? Sadly I can create these files and folders from my Mac, which I guess connects using AFP? But then I can't see them on my Windows machines. This is of little help if it is my Windows machines that I want to back up, and those being the ones with folders named like this. Thanks.
