• Best practices in ASP.Net code behind pages.

  Hi, I am an experienced developer but I am new to web application development. Now I am in charge of developing a new web application and I could really use some input from experienced web developers out there. I'd like to understand exactly what experienced web developers do in the code-behind pages. At first I thought it was best to have a rule that all the database access and business logic should be performed in classes external to the code-behind pages. My thought was that only logic necessary for the web form would be performed in the code-behind. I still think that all the business logic should be performed in other classes but I'm beginning to think it would be alright if the code-behind had access to the database to query it directly rather than having to call other classes to receive a dataset or collection back. Any input would be appreciated.

• Facebook Canvas Apps, New API

  I'm having some trouble with switching to the new JS API for a number of things with creating applications within FB, specifically the "Tab". <!-- function do_perm() { Facebook.showPermissionDialog('publish_stream,email,offline_access', null); } //--> This no longer works for me when called via an onclick command. Also, with the new API and an FBML app. How does this exactly work? The documentation is really poor so I am confused when looking at the old wiki, and the new developer site. Apologies for being pretty vague, but I'm just generally confused with the lack of clear direction with the new API and help would be greatly appreciated. I'm simply just trying to create a call that prompts for the new style user permission dialog, and oncomplete calls another JS function.

• Which version of Windows 7 for .NET Developers

  Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my laptop from Windows Vista to Windows 7. As a .NET developer I'm not interested in developing Windows 7 components at this stage, but was curious which version would suffice to Install Visual Studio/SQL Server and do some web development testing against the local instance of IIS. I don't care too much about the superfluous features of any Windows 7 editions, I just need to know which one will keep me right for running apps and writing some code. Also, does Windows 7 force the "run as administrator" against VS? Any recommendations?

• Unable to build mercurial on OSX - Python.h not found

  For what I've read I need Python-Dev, how do I install it on OSX? I think the problem I have, is, my Xcode was not properly installed, and I don't have the paths where I should. This previous question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2685887/where-is-gcc-on-osx-i-have-installed-xcode-already Was about I couldn't find gcc, now I can't find Python.h Should I just link my /Developer directory to somewhere else in /usr/ ??? • Building webparts with Visual Studio 2010 Express

  Hi, I'm trying to get started with building my own webparts, planning to follow this MSDN article. I've downloaded Visual C# 2010 Express - I'm not quite at the point where I feel comfortable dropping 1000 big ones yet, and I installed Visual Web Developer 2010 Express via the WPInstaller. Following through the tutorial, aside from the fact that I don't get the option to create a "Web Control Library", a gap I filled with this article, I can't seem to find the sn.exe tool (or the "Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt"!). I know it's not quite a direct programming related question, but I can't even get the thing going yet! Any help is appreciated. Thanks EDIT:- I think I may be jumping the gun quite considerably, I wrote a simple hello world example and tried to build it but it doesn't have any references to the Microsoft.SharePoint packages and they don't appear in my lists. Am I understanding some more research I've done (namely this) correctly, in that I have to actually have a full installation of actual SharePoint on the machine I'm developing on?

  Hi Folks, I'm wondering if there is any build-in support for the HTML5 Notification feature in Gecko browsers so far? Maybe some hidden developer thingy ? I'm aware of WebKits window.webkitNotifications which works great, so, is there a Firefox implementation ? update After searching and reading some w3c HTML5 specs, I'm maybe a little bit off here. I can't find any Notification feature anywhere there. Am I facing wrong facts here? Is that just a "very own webkit implementation" ?

• Collection of MVC CSS files available?

  Just curious - are there various customized Site.css files (and accompanying images) that work with the default ASP.NET MVC 2 templates? I'm a stereotypical developer who "doesn't do pretty" so I'd like to find a design that is good enough for me to use until I later have a designer come back and fix my design. Are there collections/libraries of various designs out there that work with the default templates? I did find this but the 2 popular ones I tried seem like they're for MVC 1, plus they in no way used the default tags with the MVC 2 templates.

• In SQL Server Business Intelligence, why would I create a report model from an OLAP cube?

  In Business Intelligence Developer Studio, I'm wondering why one would want to create a report model from an OLAP cube. As far as I understand it, OLAP cubes and report models are both business-oriented views of underlying structures (usually relational databases) that may not mean much to a business user. The cube is a multidimensional view in terms of dimensions and measures, and the report model is... well I'm not sure entirely -- is it a more business-oriented, but still essentially relational view? Anyway, in Report Builder I can connect directly to both an OLAP cube or a report model. So I don't see why, if I have an OLAP cube which already provides a business-oriented view of the data suitable for end-users, why I would then convert that to a report model and use that in Report Builder instead. I think I'm obviously missing some fundamental difference between report models and cubes -- any help appreciated!

• Programmatic DNS

  I'm a long time developer but not very experienced with DNS. Here's my problem: Our app launches servers on Amazon EC2 for clients. One client wants to use custom DNS's for every server launched instead of the normal long public DNS provided by AWS: for example server-5.demo.ourclient.com, server-6.demo.ourclient.com. What's the easiest/cleanest/best way to solve this challenge from inside our application that launches the servers and knows the Amazon public DNS? We can probably get control of demo.ourclient.com as well.... Are there nice hosted solutions with API's? Would we need to manage a DNS server for *.demo.ourclient.com? Thanks! Chad

• Visual Studio 2008 Add-in: App.config and web services.

  I have created a visual studio add-in for VS2008. The add-in uses as web service to access data required by the developer. However, currently the only way to get the service to work is to add the service bindings to the machine.config of the pc. I know this is a bad idea and its causing errors left and right in my other applications. I have tried using app.config along side my add-in but the add-in doesn't seem to use it at all. My service call is being made from a dll referenced by the add-in would that make a difference?

• How can I have HTML tab expansion in ST2 w/ Emmet inside Handlebars templates(emberjs)?

  Okay, so I'm using Sublime Text 2 with Emmet. But "Tab" expansion of HTML snippets doesn't work inside a script because of the scope. Example: In HTML, I can type "h1" and then hit tab, and it will generate "" When using Ember.js, and more specifically Handlebars, it doesn't work. <script type="text/x-handlebars"> h1 </script> Pressing tab after that "h1" doesn't expand it because it's inside a script; Emmet turns this off. I can press Ctrl+E, which is the "expand anywhere" hotkey, and that works just fine. However, that is uncomfortable and prone to missing and hitting things like Ctrl+S or Ctrl+D which have undesired effects. So, how can I change this? • Find out if assembly is signed with Authenticode

  I use an assembly of a 3rd party vendor. In an older version this assembly used authenticode. This caused the assembly loading to last quiet long. The developer of the vendor told me that the new version is not signed with authenticode. How can I check if this is true. On my development machine the assembly loading was quiet fast. Only on client machines it took quiet a while. Is it possible to check this using a network sniffer? Regards

• Entity Framework Vote of No Confidence - relevant in .NET 4?

  Hi, I'm deciding on an ORM for a big project and was determined to go for ADO.NET Entity Framework, specifically its new version that ships with .NET 4. During my search for information on EF I stumbled upon ADO .NET Entity Framework Vote of No Confidence which I'm not sure how to take. The Vote of No Confidence was written sometime in 2008 to convince Microsoft to listen to specific criticism for EF v1. It's not clear whether the claims made in the Vote of No Confidence are still valid (in .NET 4) and if they're serious enough to use other solutions. NHibernate is a mature alternative, but I don't know what problems it brings. I'm generally more inclined towards a Ms solution, mainly because I can count on integration with VS and on their developer support. I would appreciate examples of how the problems mentioned in the Vote of No Confidence affect in real world projects. More importantly, are the claims made there still relevant in EF for .NET 4? • Perl graph garbage collection usage

  Hi, I have built a tiny application in Perl that displays a graph over time. It graphs garbage collection usage over time. I use gnuplot to display the actual graph. This works fine if the time period is short, like a few hours. However, as the time increases (say a few days), the graph becomes difficult to read as the information gets crammed. Note that there is a tool called gcviewer which performs a similar function, it works by allowing you to choose the percentage of the graph. http://www.tagtraum.com/gcviewer.html Ideally I would like to take this further by adding the ability to "move" within the graph. I am not a developer but am good at scripting, so if there is some module in Perl which would provide this functionality it would be excellent! • Sql Server 2008 Install

  I already have Visual Studio 2008 installed. When installing developer Sql Server 2008, do I need to check the Business Intelligence Development Studio option? I'm guessing not. I assume if I already have VS 2008, the install will just add the relevant Sql Server related project types into VS 2008. EDIT: I marked the question answered before I did the install - I've installed Sql Server before and I thought this was what happened, but on doing this install, leaving the BI studio option unchecked does NOT install the SQL Server projects in Visual Studio. I had to go back and install it, so the answer is... Check it! I was overthinking the install - it's smart enough not to install VS twice.

• event listeners on plugin in document.onload events in opera

  I am trying to understand an issue where event-listener registration on plugins doesn't work in Opera unless i delay them. In particular, this doesn't work: document.onload = function() { plugin.addEventListener("foo", function() { alert('onFoo'); }, false); } while delaying the addEventListener() call somewhat through e.g. an alert() does: document.onload = function() { alert('onload()'); plugin.addEventListener("foo", function() { alert('onFoo'); }, false); } It seems that plugins are only loaded after document.onload. As a non-web-developer, am i missing something simple here? Or is this a known Opera problem with a common work-around?

• Why Do Browsers Leak Memory?

  A colleague and I were speaking about browsers (using browser control in a project), and it appears as plain as day that all browsers (Firefox, Chrome, IE, Opera) display the same characteristic or side-effect from their usage and that being 'Leaking Memory'. Can someone explain why that is the case? Surely as with any form of code, there should be proper garbage collection? PS. I've read about some defensive patterns on why this can happen from a developer's perspective. I am aware of an article Crockford wrote on IE; but why is the problem symptomatic of every browser? • Ideas for web development practical jokes?

  I am a web developer for a Django-based site for a student organization, and I have the opportunity to make the website temporarily absurd for a day of general campus-wide debauchery and chaos (long story, doesn't matter.) What are your best ideas for web development practical jokes (that you could never use in the real world)? For example, one idea we had was to use a client-side script to convert each character to its upside down equivalent in Unicode, si?? ??i? ?ui????os. I'm not necessarily looking for Django-specific solutions. I imagine most of these things would happen on the front-end. I am also quite aware that usability will suffer considerably--the point is to be fun for a day, and there will always be a link to the normal version of the site. Also, everything must be relatively cosmetic and easily reversible--I'm happy to swap out static CSS/JS/HTML/templates/images, and even temporarily add a django view, but no messing with the data level!

  I don't have an iPad yet to find this out; have had only a brief opportunity to look at one at the Apple store. Could someone please describe what, if anything, happens to the mouseOver event of an image-map area when the image-map|area has had user-select disabled with "webkit-user-select: none" in the CSS, as described here in section 5: http://developer.apple.com/safari/library/technotes/tn2010/tn2262/index.html When a finger tip is placed on the image-map area and held there (i.e.not a tap) is the mouseOver eventhandler invoked under those circumstances? Or does nothing happen other than the image-map area doesn't change color because it's now unselectable? In my brief experience with the iPad at the Apple store, when user-select is not disabled, and the image-map area has a mouseOver eventhandler, a tap fires the mouseOver event rather than the click event. • accessing $_SESSION when using file_get_contents in PHP

  I am basic - intermediate developer using php and am a little stumped as to what I have found. I need some help in understanding how to alleviate this issue: I have a page called send.email.php which sends an email - pretty simple stuff - I pass an order id, it creates job request and sends it out. This works fine when used in the context I developed it (Use javascript to make an AJAX call to the URL and pass the order_id as a query parameter) I am now trying to reuse the exact same page in another application however I am calling it using php file_get_contents($base_url.'admin/send.email.php?order_id='.$order_id). When I call the page this way, the $_SESSION array is empty isempty() = 1. Is this because I am initiating a new session using file_get_contents and the values I stored in the $_SESSION on login are not available to me within there? Any help? Thanks

  I usually develop content management solutions in php, I work with designers that create the front end (html & css) and I usually develop the backend (php & mysql) of said cms. I know that the cost of the website may vary depending of the complexity of the html or the backend, but taking as reference a very basic website, what percentage of the cost should go to design and what percentage should go to development. I want to make clear that I as the developer i'm in charge of all the effects and animations of the websites using some of the javascript frameworks, not the designer. I just want to know what´s the fair share for me and for the designer.

• Umbraco or ASP.NET MVC

  I'm about to create a site that will act as public front site of company that sells furniture, but after user log in, he'll see much more options. Internal news, files to download, customized pricings, newsletters, etc. - stuff for wholesale clients. I want to make it quickly and maintain/extend it easily. I'm asp.net developer and while I could write it in python, php, whatever else (I know these too), I still prefer asp.net. I was thinking about umbraco, since it gives a real productivity boost and that I familiar with it ( and extending it). I've had a short romance with ASP.NET MVC, so I know what it's all about, but I would still spend some time learning it (but what a fun!). Of course, there's also webforms, but that's my last choice here. Last but not least to mention is the SEO. The question is, have anyone of you had similiar dilemma and what was your final choice?
