• What's the best way to clean up after a fork bomb?

  $ ls bash: no more processes Uh oh. Looks like someone made a fork bomb. Where I used to work, this pretty much meant that the shared server would need to be power-cycled, since even the sysadmins with root often couldn't get the problem cleaned up. Often, they couldn't even get a prompt. I've heard a few tricks (notably, to send STOP signals rather than KILL signals, since the latter would allow the remaining threads to immediately replace the killed ones), but I've never seen a comprehensive guide entitled So, You Have Yourself a Fork Bomb? Let's make one.

• Best algorithm for recursive adjacent tiles?

  In my game I have a set of tiles placed in a 2D array marked by their Xs and Zs ([1,1],[1,2], etc). Now, I want a sort of "Paint Bucket" mechanism: Selecting a tile will destroy all adjacent tiles until a condition stops it, let's say, if it hits an object with hasFlag. • How to burn a CD-ROM from a Mac for Solaris

  I would like to burn a CD using a Mac (10.5) which I can then access from a Solaris 10 x86 machine. This partially works: Insert blank CD and let the Finder open it so it creates a "Recordable CD" window for it. Drag the files to be burned into the "Recordable CD" window Burn (there are no options except for speed) Then to mount in Solaris: mount -f hsfs -o ro /dev/dsk/foo /mnt/bar The problem here is that Solaris will see all the filenames as lower case and it will only allow each file name to contain one period (these are HSFS limitations). My guess is that the Mac is not burning the disc with the Rock Ridge extensions that allow for the full file names to be preserved. Is there some combination of burning tools/options and mount options that will make this work?

• What is an elegant way to install non-repository software in 12.04?

  Perhaps I missed something when Canonical removed the "Create launcher" option from the right click menu, because I've really been missing that little guy. For me, it was the preferred way to install software that comes not in a .deb, but in a tar.gz, for example. (Note: in that tar.gz I have a folder with the compiled files, I'm NOT compiling from source) I just downloaded the new Eclipse IDE and extracted the tar.gz to my /usr folder. Now, I'd like to add it to my desktop and dash so it can be started easily. Intuitively I would right click the desktop and create a launcher. After this I'd copy the .desktop to /usr/share/applications. However, creating a launcher is not possible. My question: How would you install an already compiled tar.gz that you have downloaded from the internet? Below are a few things I've seen, but these are all more time-consuming than the right click option. If you have any better ideas, please let me know. Thanks! • No Clipboard support in Windows Phone 7 Series &ndash; iPhone points laughs

  What exactly were you taking of late MSFT? So much for a spanking new mobile OS which wants to emulate the iPhone OS so badly that it even copied and pasted the iPhone’s erstwhile lack of clipboard support as well? The reason given is so lame (shall I say differently able?) that deserves pity rather than lament. According to MSFT people don’t use the clipboard that often. Being a WinMo user for the better part of my life and having developed for the platform for worse part of it I could say with conviction that Clipboard support was one key differentiator which kept me away from “The Phone to have” of 2007-8-9. Let me try to find few use cases I for one have been using the clipboard. Copy files to and from card and phone memory. Copy images, audio files from apps/browsers/explorer to email other apps. Copy text to/from word documents, notes and emails. Copy content from network drives to memory card. Copy links between browsers (Yes i did it for the love of Opera and PIE alike). Others could definitely come up with more. So who are these so called “users” who provided feedback to MSFT that the clipboard is useless? • Effective way to check if an Entity/Player enters a region/trigger

  I was wondering how multiplayer games detect if you enter a special region. Let's assume there is a huge map that is so big that simply checking it would become a huge performance issue. I've seen bukkit (a modding API for Minecraft servers) firing an Event on every single move. I don't think that larger games do the same because even if you have only a few coordinates you are interested in, you have to loop through a few trigger zone to see if the player is inside your region - for every player. This seems like an extremely CPU-intense operation to me even though I've never developed something like that. Is there a special algorithm that is used by larger games to accomplish this? The only thing I could imagine is to split up the world into multiple parts and to register the event not on the movement itself but on all the parts that are covered by your area and only check for areas that are registered in the current part. And another thing I would like to know: How could you detect when someone must have entered a trigger but you never saw him directly in it since his client only sent you an move packet shortly before entering and after leaving the trigger area. Drawing a line and calculate all colliding parts seems rather CPU intensive if you have to perform it every time.

  I don't get it. WTF do people see in this? I'm trying to figure it out, but I can't. Have you seen what people post? Let's use Jeff Atwood as an example. What does he gain by posting (with disturbing frequency) all those, well... posts (I find the term "tweets" disgusting). What is a "follower" supposed to get from these posts? I know many of you are thinking, "Just don't use it!". Yes, I know I don't have to use it, but it's like asking me not to look at the space shuttle that just crashed in my front yard. The rest of the world thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I'm just trying to understand what people see in it.

• How to talk to a virtual host on a guest OS?

  Let's say there is a host OS (Mac OS X) and a virtual machine running Ubuntu as guest OS. The guest OS has the IP 192.186.56.101 and some virtual hosts, e.g. ubuntu.server So, how to really map a request to the virtual host ubuntu.server on the guest OS? I tried: Configure the host OS in /etc/hosts to map ubuntu.server to 192.186.56.101 On the guest OS we have the trouble. It accepts the request for 192.186.56.101 which is not ubuntu.server and therefor the ubuntu.server virtual host will never be requested. Just the localhost on the guest OS. It might surely be possible to simply then use 192.168.56.101. But this would only work for one host per guest OS. Any idea? Or is there a bug in my train of thoughts?

  Im in the process of setting up a new database server. I have been running a few mysql database servers before and it has been working okay. But i would like to hear the recommended setup for my server. For example, what should i set the max connection, query_cache_size, table_cache and so on. I have arround 4-600 per second: Open tables: 112 Queries per second avg: 430.386. The server i am setting it up on have the following configuration: Linux version 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian 2.6.32-41squeeze2) 2x Intel Xeon X3440 @ 2.53GHz 4GB Ram /, /boot, /tmp etc on Software RAID1, 2x 7200RPM SATA Data location on Software RAID0, 2x7200RPM SATA Im am going to place the mysql databases on the RAID0. • Automatically wake up notebooks not on the ethernet

  I am looking for an automated backup system and I like bacula. I have 3 Notebooks and a Desktop computer that need regular backup. Now I don't want to let them run all night just to do the backuping, so I was thinking I could use wake-on-lan to have bacula wake up the machines, then do the backups, and shut them down afterswards. While this may work with devices on the ethernet, it won't work with the Notebooks on the wifi. So is it possible to have the Notebooks schedules to automatically wake up from suspend or shutdown ? Or is it possible to interject a shutdown command if it is after a certain hour and call the bacula director to start the backup now? I'm new to controlling the linux system using scripts, so any hints on how and where to start are greatly appreciated. Thanks alot for your help, input and ideas.

• ADFS 2.0 and CRM 2011 IFD - Error 403 when being redirected

  I'm not sure what happened here, but let me give you the rundown. I have a CRM 2011 IFD that by all accounts was functioning. Out of nowhere, I find that when being redirected to ADFS 2.0 login page by CRM, instead of seeing the login page, I get the following error: 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied. I'm not sure what is going on here. The certs are good, as best as I can tell, the logins are good. More specifically, nothing has been modified. This all worked just fine, and now it doesn't. I'm really stumped.

• HDD Carrier, like a soda carrier available at McDonalds?

  We use external USB drives for backups, and they have to be stored offsite at the end of the week. Right now we have your standard external USB drive inside an enclosure. We were thinking about moving to a USB dock, and dock a bare HDD for backups, rather than having various sized and types of enclosures. If we were to do this, the drives need protection while being transported to/from the safety deposit box. Is there any kind of hard drive carrier that would let us slide two drives into it, and it would provide protection while the drives are carried around by non-technical people? I'm afraid such a product doesn't exist, but perhaps someone knows of something?

• Obtaining a world point from a screen point with an orthographic projection

  I assumed this was a straightforward problem but it has been plaguing me for days. I am creating a 2D game with an orthographic camera. I am using a 3D camera rather than just hacking it because I want to support rotating, panning, and zooming. Unfortunately the math overwhelms me when I'm trying to figure out how to determine if a clicked point intersects a bounds (let's say rectangular) in the game. I was under the impression that I could simply transform the screen point (the clicked point) by the inverse of the camera's View * Projection matrix to obtain the world coordinates of the clicked point. Unfortunately this is not the case at all; I get some point that seems to be in some completely different coordinate system. So then as a sanity check I tried taking an arbitrary world point and transforming it by the camera's View*Projection matrices. Surely this should get me the corresponding screen point, but even that didn't work, and it is quickly shattering any illusion I had that I understood 3D coordinate systems and the math involved. So, if I could form this into a question: How would I use my camera's state information (view and projection matrices, for instance) to transform a world point to a screen point, and vice versa? I hope the problem will be simpler since I'm using an orthographic camera and can make several assumptions from that. I very much appreciate any help. If it makes a difference, I'm using XNA Game Studio.

• Server Fax Farm - Need suggestions, or advice

  We're Looking at creating a large fax farm via T.38 (Fax over Voip - hundreds of incoming and outgoing faxes) on linux servers, anyone have any suggestions on what is available? All my searches return using Asterisk 1.6.x with a commercial product from Digium called "Fax for Asterisk" (with required purchase of "channels" at $38.00 per channel). There must be an open source project out there I can't seem to find. Suggestions welcome! Here is some additional info: We're using Ubuntu 9.10, and planning to use T.38 If I have missed anything, let me know.

• Stopping local drive mappings from transfering to a RDP session

  We have a SQL server that locally has about 6 physical drives mapped. However let's say G: is a mount point to the SAN, if I connect with my local machine and have a personal folder mapped locally as g:\userdata that transfers to the remote desktop session on the server overwriting the value of the 'NAME' of the share. Here is the kicker, the G: on the server still has the right information but has the wrong label coming from the share on my PC. Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening? My tick box for local resources is unchecked in my Microsoft RDP client.

  Rather than running a long cable from my Laptop to my stereo, I've been thinking for a while about getting one of those wireless devices that lets you transmit audio from your PC to a receiver plugged into the stereo. Then I realised I already have hardware that can potentially do this - I have an iPod Touch, and a Wi-Fi network in the house. So, is there some iPod Touch App that will let the iPod act as a Wi-Fi music receiver? And presumably, a corresponding piece of broadcast software for my (Windows Vista) Laptop?

• How do I capture a 10053 trace for a SQL statement called in a PL/SQL package?

  Traditionally if you wanted to capture an Optimizer trace (10053) for a SQL statement you would issue an alter session command to switch on a 10053 trace for that entire session, and then issue the SQL statement you wanted to capture the trace for. Once the statement completed you would exit the session to disable the trace. You would then look in the USER_DUMP_DEST directory for the trace file. But what if the SQL statement you were interested  in was actually called as part of a PL/SQL package? Oracle Database 11g, introduced a new diagnostic events infrastructure, which greatly simplifies the task of generating a 10053 trace for a specific SQL statement in a PL/SQL package. All you will need to know is the SQL_ID for the statement you are interested in. Instead of turning on the trace event for the entire session you can now switch it on for a specific SQL ID. Oracle will then capture a 10053 trace for the corresponding SQL statement when it is issued in that session. Remember the SQL statement still has to be hard parsed for the 10053 trace to be generated.  Let's begin our example by creating a PL/SQL package called 'cal_total_sales'. The SQL statement we are interested in is the same as the one in our original example, SELECT SUM(AMOUNT_SOLD) FROM SALES WHERE CUST_ID = :B1. We need to know the SQL_ID of this SQL statement to set up the trace, and we can find in V$SQL. We now have everything we need to generate the trace. Finally  you would look in the USER_DUMP_DEST directory for the trace file with the name you specified. Maria Colgan+

• Coarse Collision Detection in highly dynamic environment

  I'm currently working a 3D space game with A LOT of dynamic objects that are all moving (there is pretty much no static environment). I have the collision detection and resolution working just fine, but I am now trying to optimize the collision detection (which is currently O(N^2) -- linear search). I thought about multiple options, a bounding volume hierarchy, a Binary Spatial Partitioning tree, an Octree or a Grid. I however need some help with deciding what's best for my situation. A grid seems unfeasible simply due to the space requirements and cache coherence problems. Since everything is so dynamic however, it seems to be that trees aren't ideal either, since they would have to be completely rebuilt every frame. I must admit I never implemented a physics engine that required spatial partitioning, do I indeed need to rebuild the tree every frame (assuming that everything is constantly moving) or can I update the trees after integrating? Advice is much appreciated - to give some more background: You're flying a space ship in an asteroid field, and there are lots and lots of asteroids and some enemy ships, all of which shoot bullets. EDIT: I came across the "Sweep an Prune" algorithm, which seems like the right thing for my purposes. It appears like the right mixture of fast building of the data structures involved and detailed enough partitioning. • Can windows XP be better than any Ubuntu (and Linux) distro for an old PC?

  The old laptop is a Toshiba 1800-100: CPU: Intel Celeron 800h Ram 128 MB (works ok) HDD: 15GB (works ok) Graphics adapter: Integrated 64-bit AGP graphics accelerator, BitBIT, 3D graphic acceleration, 8 MB Video RAM Only WindowsXP is installed, and works ok: it can be used, but it is slow (and hateful). I thought that I could improve performance (and its look) easily, since it is an old PC (drivers and everything known for years...) by installing a light Linux distro. So, I decided to install a light or customized Ubuntu distro, or Ubuntu/Debian derivative, but haven't been successful with any; not even booting LiveCDs: not even AntiX, not even Puppy. Lubuntu wiki says that it won't work because the last to releases need more ram (and some blogs say much more cpu -even core duo for new Lubuntu!-), let alone Xubuntu. The problems I have faced are: 1.There are thousands of pages talking about the same 10/15 lightweight distros, and saying more or less the same things, but NONE talks about a simple thing as to how should the RAM/swap-partition proportion be for this kind of installations. NONE! 2.Loading the LiveCD I have tried several different boot options (don't understand much about this and there's ALWAYS a line of explanation missing) and never receive error messages. Booting just stops at different stages but often seems to stop just when the X server is going to start. I am able to boot to command line. 3.I ignore whether the problem is ram size or a problem with the graphics driver (which surprises me because it is a well known brand and line of computers). So I don't know if doing a partition with a swap partition would help booting the LiveCD. 4.I would like to try the graphical interface with the LiveCD before installing. If doing the swap partition for this purpose would help. How can I do the partition? I tried to use Boot Rescue CD, but it advises me against continuing forward. I would appreciate any ideas as regards these questions. Thank you

This is needed for our web apps that use Active Directory for LDAP authentication. The problem is those apps do not notify you that your password is going to expire when you login. We have many offsite users who do not have machines bound to the AD. So there is no way to let them know to reset their password. I'd like the user to be notified 30,7 and 1 day before it expires. I'd also like our help desk to get an email for the expiring passwords for the week and recently expired passwords. I've looked at oldcmp.exe from link text and that gets me my reports but it does not do the automation that I'm looking for on the individual users.

• Recovering a lost website with no backup?

  Unfortunately, our hosting provider experienced 100% data loss, so I've lost all content for two hosted blog websites: http://blog.stackoverflow.com http://www.codinghorror.com (Yes, yes, I absolutely should have done complete offsite backups. Unfortunately, all my backups were on the server itself. So save the lecture; you're 100% absolutely right, but that doesn't help me at the moment. Let's stay focused on the question here!) I am beginning the slow, painful process of recovering the website from web crawler caches. There are a few automated tools for recovering a website from internet web spider (Yahoo, Bing, Google, etc.) caches, like Warrick, but I had some bad results using this: My IP address was quickly banned from Google for using it I get lots of 500 and 503 errors and "waiting 5 minutes…" Ultimately, I can recover the text content faster by hand I've had much better luck by using a list of all blog posts, clicking through to the Google cache and saving each individual file as HTML. While there are a lot of blog posts, there aren't that many, and I figure I deserve some self-flagellation for not having a better backup strategy. Anyway, the important thing is that I've had good luck getting the blog post text this way, and I am definitely able to get the text of the web pages out of the Internet caches. Based on what I've done so far, I am confident I can recover all the lost blog post text and comments. However, the images that go with each blog post are proving…more difficult. Any general tips for recovering website pages from Internet caches, and in particular, places to recover archived images from website pages? (And, again, please, no backup lectures. You're totally, completely, utterly right! But being right isn't solving my immediate problem… Unless you have a time machine…)
