• wubi dual-boot installation of ubuntu 12.04 on Windows 7 fails to boot

  I am trying to use the wubi installation process to create a Ubuntu 12.04 / Windows 7 dual boot setup on my Windows 7 machine (Dell Inspiron 17R). The installation initially works fine, and I am able to load Ubuntu several times after selecting it from the boot menu. However, when I boot into Windows 7 it seems to corrupt the Ubuntu boot process, because after running Windows 7, Ubuntu won't boot on the machine. It is still listed as an option in the boot menu, but when it is selected, the machine does one of the following: -hangs at the load-screen and says that Ubuntu is preparing to run for the first time (although it isn't the first time the OS has been loaded) -hangs with a black screen and does nothing I have uninstalled Ubuntu and then reinstalled it (using wubi) three times. Each time Ubuntu initially boots okay (including rebooting the laptop into Ubuntu several times.) However, whenever I switch over and boot into Windows 7 it breaks the Ubuntu installation. Windows 7 continues to boot and work fine without issues. I have successfully installed Ubuntu using wubi onto a different Windows 7 machine before without problems...it seems that there is something different about this laptop configuration. I am not sure how to debug the issue. I see no error messages during the Ubuntu boot process when it hangs and am not sure how to debug this.

• Text Terminal Hardware (for Linux)

  Is there any way to obtain a hardware text terminal (preferably small in size) with a screen and a keypad to connect to a Linux machine (preferably via usb)? I'd like to be able to log into a command line and do some work there while simultaneously running a graphical environment on the main display. It seems like there should be some kind of lcd screen and qwerty keypad device designed for this purpose. Does this exist, and how do I get one? Edit: I'd be happy with a small networked device as well, as long as I could get a remote terminal into my computer.

• Ubuntu 10.04 install - frozen at splash, no errors

  Has anyone else come across this? After about as much of a fresh install as i can muster without buying new drives, and after walking through the amd64 alternate install with ease, and after a little 'pre-splash' screen where the orange dots under the (very sexy) new ubuntu logo blink away, I'm left with a vista of purple hues and logo plonked in the middle, with the dots not going anywhere. I was at this same position last night at 3 in the morning, left it lying overnight, and nothing had changed, so I'm pretty sure its frozen, the virtual terminals are not accessible, ie, c+a+F1 etc does nothing, but when i go in and inspect /var/log/* in the recovery console by booting off the installation cd, no errors, no complaints, no problems. I'm at my wits end and am just about ready to try anything. If this was on SO I'd be bountying, but if anyone can help you'll just have to cope with my thanks! Additional Details on my blog and my first attempt at asking for help Update: I can reasonably say it is not a hardware fault, as a full install of 9.10 with dual screen nvidia xinemara indicate that nothing is wonky

• Adding many IP addresses to Windows Firewall using CLI fails partially

  I have a PowerShell script which adds IP addresses to Windows Firewall using the "netsh advfirewall" command. (As described in this question: How to append netsh firewall rules, not just replace). The problem is that when adding a lot of IP addresses (currently over 700) the string of IP addresses seems to be 'cut off' at some point. Only an X amount of the total amount of IP addresses are actually added to the firewall, the rest... not. The script is very simple, and looks something like this: $ip = "123.123.123.123,124.124.124.124,125.125.125.125 and so on" netsh advfirewall firewall set rule name="*" new remoteip="$ip" I tried to echo the string to see if it's cut off; echo $ip But the complete string is correctly echo'ed. Is there some kind of string length limit for the netsh command? Or anything else that could be causing this issue?

• Ubuntu, No wireless networks found after correctly installed madwifi

  Hi, I just installed madwifi on my MSI laptop with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card & Lucid. As far as I can see and according to System - Administration - Hardware drivers the install was successful and the card + driver is up and running. However, I don't see any wireless network (my windows PC can see about 5 wireless networks). I tried it with the network manager applet as well as with wicd. If I try to connect to "Hidden Wireless Network" via nm-applet, it will start to connect for a while but is unable too (although I supply it with the correct WEP settings & key) So, I'm unable to use my wireless network. What am i doing wrong? • Which data structure should I use for dynamically generated platforms?

  I'm creating a platform type of game with various types of platforms. Platforms that move, shake, rotate, etc. Multiple types and multiple of each type can be on the screen at once. The platforms will be procedural generated. I'm trying to figure out which of the following would be a better platform system: Pre-allocate all platforms when the scene loads, storing each platform type into different platform type arrays( i.e. regPlatformArray ), and just getting one when I need one. The other option is to allocate and load what I need when my code needs it. The problem with 1 is keeping up with the indices that are in use on screen and which aren't. The problem with 2 is I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how I would store these platforms so that I can call the update/draw methods on them and managing that data structure that holds them. The data structure would constantly be growing and shrinking. It seems there could be too much complexity. I'm using the cocos2d iPhone game engine. Anyways, which option would be best or is there a better option?

• How to start gnome-shell?

  I successfully installed GNOME 3 and GNOME Shell from the Launchpad PPA on my fully updated Natty test system. However, nothing I tried could get it to actually run. If I selected it in the startup options, I got a plain light blue screen with absolutely nothing on it. • Windows 8 + Ubuntu dualboot problem - ubuntu does not load after windows updates

  I have installed Windows 8 64-bit and Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit in dualboot with EFI mode. Everything worked great. I could run Ubuntu or Windows without any problems. Only one little issue was that Windows locked NTFS partitions when I shut it down. When I clicked on restart button in Windows and started Ubuntu, partitions mounted successfully. But today ... I opened windows and downloaded all available updates. When I wanted to come back to Ubuntu I noticed that grub did not count down seconds to automatic start. After choosing Ubuntu option manually, the OS did not load. Just black screen with white underscore in the upper left corner. Windows is accessible always without such issues. Last time I solved it by reinstalling ubuntu but I dont want to do it each time windows downloads some updates. Have you ever meet such problem, or do you know how to solve it? EDIT Ubuntu boots, but it won't start. It ends on loading screen.

I want to know if i can install 7 without having to reformat my hard drive and having to lose all my files. I've already confirmed the hardware is working because i installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my external hard drive and it runs on my system fine. • Creating Multiple Users on Single PHP-FPM Pool

  Have PHP-FPM/FastCGI up and running on my cPanel/WHM server but I'd like have it allow for multiple users off of a single pool. I manage and control all the domains that run under the pool so I'm not concerned about security of files per account, I just need to make sure all scripting can be executed by the user who owns the files, instead of needing to change file permissions for each account, or having to create tons of vhost include files.

• How do I enable greedy MigrationHeuristic in Karmic?

  My laptop performs very poorly for 2d graphics. For example, Docky's zoom effect and compiz effects are very choppy. In Jaunty, I was able to fix this by adding the following line under the "Device" section in my xorg.conf: Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy" In Karmic, there is no xorg.conf by default, so I copied my old one (from Jaunty). However, everything is still slow. Here is my xorg.conf: Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Configured Monitor" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" Device "Configured Video Device" EndSection From googling about, it sounds like "MigrationHeuristic" is only an option for the "EXA" mode, while Karmic has switched the intel driver to "UXA". So I tried adding this line under the "Device" section: Option "AccelMethod" "exa" But this didn't help.

• Windows will not go into standby

  When I select Start-Turn off computer-Standby the 'turn off computer' option window closes, and then nothing else happens. I can start new applications, and Windows acts like I never selected standby. If I have a TV program scheduled to record I get a window asking if I'm sure, there are programs scheduled to record - and the computer just keeps running after I select yes. (If a program is not scheduled then that task in not running/in memory - this problem happens even if I'm not watching TV and no TV scheduling task is running.) This problem happens regardless of whether Media Center is running. Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, all current updates installed.

• How to make a system time-zone sensitive?

  I need to implement time zones in a very large and old Delphi system, where there's a central SQL Server database and possibly hundreds of client installations around the world in different time zones. The application already interacts with the database by only using the date/time of the database server. So, all the time stamps saved in both the database and on the client machines are the date/time of the database server when it happened, never the time of the client machine. So, when a client is about to display the date/time of something (such as a transaction) which is coming from this database, it needs to show the date/time converted to the local time zone. This is where I get lost. I would naturally assume there should be something in SQL to recognize the time zone and convert a DateTime field dynamically. I'm not sure if such a thing exists though. If so, that would be perfect, but if not, I need to figure out another way. This Delphi system (multiple projects) utilizes the SQL Server database using ADO components, VCL data-aware controls, and QuickReports (using data sources). So, there's many places where the data goes directly from the database query to rendering on the screen, without any code to actually put this data on the screen. In the end, I need to know when and how should I get the properly converted time? There must be a standard method for this, and I'm hoping SQL Server 2008 R2 has this covered...

• Windows 8 can't open any modern UI app

  I just upgraded my machine with Windows 7 Pro x64, to Windows 8 Pro x64, with the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant. Everything went great, but none of the Modern UI Apps open, and they do not show any error messages or warnings, they just close right away I opened them. I tried to open Skydrive, Windows Store, Photo App,Music App, Bing, Videos , Finances and all the available Modern UI apps on my screen My screen resolution is 1080p, so it is not a resolution issue, I'm using a Windows account , but i switched to Local account but didn't solved the issue. I ran Windows Update and updated my nVidia video drivers. I also tried an app called "Metro App Troubleshooter" without luck

  The session convened and we began a discussion about why collaboration is so hard. To work together in software better us engineers have to overcome traditional software approaches (silos of work) and the human element of tending to go off in a corner to work through an issue. It was agreed upon that software engineers are jack asses of jack assery. Breaking down the stoic & silent types by presenting a continuous enthusiasm until the stoic and silent types break down and open up to the group.  Knowing it is ok to ask the dumb question or work through basic things once in a while. Non-work interactions are pivotal to work related collaboration. Collaboration is mostly autonomous of process (i.e. Agile or Waterfall) Latency time should be minimal in the feedback loop for software development. Collaboration is enhanced by Agile Ideals, and things like Scrum or Lean Process. Agile is not a process, Lean and Scrum are process.  Agile is an ideal. Lean, Agile, Scrum, Waterfall, Six Sigma, CMMI, oh dear. . . Great session.  Off to the next session and more brain crunching. . . weeeeeeee!

• Hyper-V Machine drifts time all over, even with NTP

  Resolved The problem was Hyper-V on that machine. I removed Hyper-V, installed VMware Server, ran the same VM. Time sync issues went away (< 100ms difference after a day). My setup is like this: HYV1 - HyperV machine (non domain) - sync irrelevant AD1 - VM AD server on HYV1, sync'd to time.nist.gov. HyperV time sync off. S1 - Physical machine, sync'd to domain. S2 - Physical machine running HyperV, sync'd to domain. V1 - Linux VM machine on S2, sync'd to AD1. No HyperV integration. AD1 and S1 have fine sync -- stripchart shows less than 100ms difference. S2 drifts like crazy. How can I go about troubleshooting this? It's the only machine that is having this problem. All the other machines (physical and virtual) are doing fine. Edit: To clarify: The VM (AD1) has integration turned off and syncs to time.nist.gov. AD1 is fine. It's the physical machine S1 that can't sync to AD1 and drifts all over. All the other physical servers are able to sync to AD1 just fine. Update So, it appears to be an issue of running the VM. The clock slips slowly with the VM off. Turned on, it immediately starts losing seconds. I swt the VM to only use half the resources, and that seems to have slightly mitigated it, for now. Thanks!

• Cloning (mirroring) laptop display to area of external monitor display

  I'm using Maverick "10.10" Meercat on a HP Pavilion tx2110. This machine has an NVidia Go6150 graphics card, and sports a 1280x800 display. I have an external monitor which can do 1280x1024 resolution. FWIW I'm using openbox as my window manager; as I understand it this shouldn't be a factor. I'd like to clone the display to the monitor, so that the size of the desktop remains at 1280x800, and there is a horizontal blank area on the external monitor. I.E. I want to avoid having to pan the display of the desktop on either monitor. So the actual resolution of the monitor would be 1280x1024, but the resolution of the section of the monitor where stuff was actually being displayed would be 1280x800. Using the nvidia-settings applet, I'm able to set up the cloned display so that the desktop size is 1280x1024 (the resolution of the external monitor), but can't find a way to instead have the desktop size stay at the resolution of the laptop's built-in display. Is this achievable? Ideally I'd like the external monitor's blank area to be at the top of the screen, i.e. for it to align the display with the bottom of the screen.

• Graphics performance of 945GME

  Edit: Since setting Appearance - Visual Effects up to a stunning "Normal", I now get ~35 FPS in glxgears right after login, with nothing else running :( I'm getting terrible graphics performance in NeverWinter Nights (native with SoU+HotU+CEP2) on my Eee PC 1005HAB. Even with all graphics settings (including the "advanced" ones) at minimum I get about 2-10 FPS, depending on the scene. Firefox is really sluggish as well - Changing tabs often takes a second, scrolling is laggy, and typing this I notice the delay between pressing keys and seeing the text on screen. The rest of the OS is running OK, although general performance seems to be even worse than my old Eee PC 900. glxgears gives about 60 FPS, which is apparently as it should be (synchronized with the monitor refresh rate). Bugs like Launchpad #252094 and the instructions for Reverting the Jaunty Xorg intel driver to 2.4 are old enough that I'm afraid following the instructions would render the system unusable.   This is sort of related to a previous question. My formula, which seemed to work fine yesterday now gives strange results. Today is the 30th of March (30/03/10). It's 10:11am on the clock that the computer is using for the time stamp in the NOW() part of my worksheet. Below is the formula and a screen shot of the results/columns. QUESTION: Why ddoes it show 1/2 day, and also where does 23 1/2 come from? • Rotation of bitmap using a frame by frame animation

  Hey every one I know this has probably been asked a ton of times but I just wanted to clarify if I am approaching this correctly, since I ran into some problems rotating a bitmap. So basically I have one large bitmap that has four frames drawn on it and I only draw one at a time by looping through the bitmap by increments to animate walking. I can get the bitmap to rotate correctly when it is not moving but once the animation starts it starts to cut off alot of the image and sometimes becomes very fuzzy.   Okay, I'm a separated 2 time Iraq war veteran, living in Germany Supporting the military. About a year and a hald ago I bought an iPhone 4 off a guy from Craigslist. I thought the phone was unlocked, but when I got to Germany I realized it was not. I called AT&T and they told me that due to the contract with Apple they could not unlock any iPhone period. After the lawsuit with Apple, they started unlocking iPhones. So Today I called up their customer support and asked if they could unlock my phone. They said that they would only do it if I were a previous customer, could provide the information from the person that I had bought it from, or if I bought one at cost.-note, it has a baseband that is not able to be "unlocked" by software.Hello I already own the device, and a year and a half ago I bought it off someone that couldn't afford it... so no, I don't have the at&t account information from him. Just another example of why I won't ever use AT&T again. and I still have this iPhone that I have to jail break, and can't use a a phone. STAY AWAY FROM AT&T. They don't know the meaning of customer service!

• Macbook Pro 13" Retina (10,2): Keyboard and Touchpad don't work

  I'm dealing with Ubuntu since about 5 years and installed it on several laptops. Now I'm stuck when trying to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 on a brand new Macbook Pro 13" Retina (10,2). I sucessfully can start Ubuntu from an USB stick, the Ubuntu desktop is visible, a mouse cursor is visible. But there is no respond to keyboard or touchpad input. So I cannot really install Ubuntu on the Macbook. The details of my approach: Prepare an empty USB stick Download "ISO 2 USB EFI Booter for Mac" and copy the file bootX64.efi to the USB drive as /efi/boot/bootX64.efi. Download Ubuntu 12.04.1 Desktop for Mac from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/1-amd64+mac.iso and copy the iso the USB drive as /efi/boot/boot.iso Put the USB stick into the Macbook Press and hold the "alt" button while switching the Macbook on Select "EFI Boot" from the boot menu that appears and press the Return / Enter key Immediately a black terminal screen appears with the headline "Welcome to the Ubuntu ISO << - EFI booter". 30 seconds later the familiar Ubuntu startup graphics screen is showing. Further 20 seconds later Ubuntu has started and the desktop is visible - in wonderfully fine resolution Now the computer does not respond to any actions on the touchpad nor the keyboard Who did install Ubuntu on this Macbook Pro 13" Retina (10,2) successfully? On this site https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro this unit is not listed yet, anyway. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Dirk
