• Redirect input from one terminal to another

  I have sshed into a linux box and I'm using dvtm and bash (although I have also tried this with Gnu screen and bash). I have two terminals, current /dev/pts/29 and /dev/pts/130. I want to redirect the input from one to the other. From what I understand, in /dev/pts/130 I can type: cat </dev/pts/29 And then when I type in /dev/pts/29 the characters I type should show up in /dev/pts/130. However what ends up happening is that every other character I type gets redirected. For example, if I type "hello" I get this: /dev/pts/29 | /dev/pts/130 $ | $ cat </dev/pts/29 $ el | hlo This is really frustrating as I need to do this in order to redirect the io of a process running in gdb (I've tried both run /dev/pts/# and set inferior-tty /dev/pts/# and both resulted in the aforementioned behavior). Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug in bash/screen/dvtm?

• Xcode find in document stuck in case-sensitive

  When in Xcode editing code for my objective C files, I often press Command-F to bring up the little Find-In-Document banner across the top. Sometimes this gets stuck in case-sensitive search, and when it does that it also won't loop through the entire document and sometimes won't even display the selected found string. I can't find any options to turn off the case sensitivity, and I never intentionally turned it on. I've restarted xcode several times hoping that would be it but it's changed nothing. Slightly off-topic, but this was the best place I could think of to ask this question. Thanks for any response!

  How do you handle the departure process when privileged or technical staff resign / get fired? Do you have a checklist of things to do to ensure the continuing operation / security of the company's infrastructure? I'm trying to come up with a nice canonical list of things that my colleagues should do when I leave (I resigned a week ago, so I've got a month to tidy up and GTFO). So far I've got: Escort them off the premises Delete their email Inbox (set all mail to forward to a catch-all) Delete their SSH keys on server(s) Delete their mysql user account(s) ... So, what's next. What have I forgotten to mention, or might be similarly useful? (endnote: Why is this off-topic? I'm a systems administrator, and this concerns continuing business security, this is definitely on-topic.)

• Remote Desktop not following display settings

  I have my RDP client set up to use highest settings for connecting to another PC on my LAN, which has display settings 1280x1024x32bit. RDP is specifically set to use 32bit depth, but when I connect it drops to 16bit. The PC I connect to is (amongst other things) used to do some 3D graphics. I don't expect great performance, just to check it works... but it doesn't over RDP, the 3D app doesn't think the hardware is the same. Does RDP's integration with Windows mean it is providing some virtualised rendering system? Should I use something less 'clever' like VNC, to literally screen-grab the contents of the screen without altering the settings?

• How to move an UIView along a curved CGPath according to user dragging the view

  I'm trying to build a interface that the user can move his finger around the screen an a list of images moves along a path. The idea is that the images center nevers leaves de path. Most of the things I found was about how to animate using CGPath and not about actually using the path as the track to a user movement. I need to objects to be tracked on the path even if the user isn't moving his fingers over the path. For example (image bellow), if the object is at the beginning of the path and the user touches anywhere on the screen and moves his fingers from left to right I need that the object moves from left to right but following the path, that is, going up as it goes to the right towards the path's end. This is the path I've draw, imagine that I'll have a view (any image) that the user can touch and drag it along the path, there's no need to move the finger exactly over the path. If the user move from left to right the image should move from left to right but going up if need following the path. • Two things I learned this week...

  I often say "I learn something new about Oracle every day".  It really is true - there is so much to know about it, it is hard to keep up sometimes.Here are the two new things I learned - the first is regarding temporary tablespaces.  In the past - when people have asked "how can I shrink my temporary tablespace" I've said "create a new one that is smaller, alter your database/users to use this new one by default, wait a bit, drop the old one".  Actually I usually said first - "don't, it'll just grow again" but some people really wanted to make it smaller.Now, there is an easier way:http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e26088/statements_3002.htm#SQLRF53578Using alter tablespace temp shrink space .The second thing is just a little sqlplus quirk that I probably knew at one point but totally forgot.  People run into problems with &'s in sqlplus all of the time as sqlplus tries to substitute in for an &variable.  So, if they try to select '&hello world' from dual - they'll get:ops$tkyte%ORA11GR2> select '&hello world' from dual;Enter value for hello: old   1: select '&hello world' from dualnew   1: select ' world' from dual'WORLD------ worldops$tkyte%ORA11GR2> One solution is to "set define off" to disable the substitution (or set define to some other character).  Another oft quoted solution is to use chr(38) - select chr(38)||'hello world' from dual.  I never liked that one personally.  Today - I was shown another wayhttps://asktom.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:4549764300346084350#4573022300346189787 ops$tkyte%ORA11GR2> select '&' || 'hello world' from dual;'&'||'HELLOW------------&hello worldops$tkyte%ORA11GR2>just concatenate '&' to the string, sqlplus doesn't touch that one!  I like that better than chr(38) (but a little less than set define off....)

• Use TV (hdmi) with non-square pixels

  I am having a problem when I connect my LG plasma tv (with a native resolution of 1024x768 pixels) to my 12.04 laptop. The pixels (actual pixels, not the signal) of my TV are stretched so it gets his 16:9 ratio. The pixels are rectangular (1.3333x1). Everything I display from my laptop oviously get stretched (4:3 stretched to 16:9). There is a different dpi in X and Y needed for it to display properly (some kind of anamorphic mode). Default Ubuntu uses a dpi of 96x96. I can change it using xrandr, but only square eg 100x100 or 70x70. Already looked here, but it seems Ubuntu totally ignore the displaySize in xorg.conf When I use the code below to see the dpi and nothing I do changes it. The displaySize also stays the same (calculated using 96 dpi and the resolution) xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution I use the propretary ATI drivers for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 50xx but it is the same with the Radeon drivers. My temporary solution is to use: xrandr --output DFP1 --mode 1024x768 --scale 1.333333333333x1 --output LVDS --off But with this the right side of the screen is nog accesable. This is a known problem with xrandr --scale and ubuntu. This is because of a patch for the mouse/windows not going outside the screen. I search a way to change the DisplaySize or the dpi(to something not square like 128x96) when I connect the display.

• Xna Equivalent of Viewport.Unproject in a draw call as a matrix transformation

  I am making a 2D sidescroller and I would like to draw my sprite to world space instead of client space so I do not have to lock it to the center of the screen and when the camera stops the sprite will walk off screen instead of being stuck at the center. In order to do this I wanted to make a transformation matrix that goes in my draw call. • VLC - How to restore GUI?

  I was mucking around with VLC setting up an http interface and somehow I've managed to turn off the default GUI - which i believe is the Qt interface. So now when i start VLC i get the process showing up in TaskManager (Im on Win 7) but no GUI. How can i re-enable GUI without an uninstall|install? I don't want to do this because I want to keep mucking around with it and if i accidentally turn off the GUI again I don't want to have to go through some uninstall|reinstall loop. I thought it would just be a config file entry somewhere but do you think i can find it? The config file that is.

• Windows host MIA on network

  I've had a machine effectively disappear off my home office network. 192.168.1.100 - Windows 7 laptop (on domain) - problem machine 192.168.1.42 - Windows 2008 server (domain controller) 192.168.1.101 - Windows 7 laptop (guest; not on domain) For some reason I am unable to ping, tracert or remote desktop to 192.168.1.100 from .42 or .101. I can remote between .42 and .101 no problem however. .100 cannot ping nor remote desktop to .42 or .101. Remote Desktop access is enabled on .100. I've opened the firewall rules. I've disabled the firewall domain profile. I've turned the firewall service off entirely. No matter what I do, the .100 host is unreachable by any other host on the network. I'm at my wit's end. Thanks in advance for any debug advice!

• Upgrade from 11.04 to 12.04 failed - unable to login

  Yesterday i updgraded from 10.04 to 12.04 via the update-manager. At the end it said "Failed to upgrade due to too many errors". Before that i got a lot of error messages that said packages could ne configured - they were all related to mono. Then it force me to restart. When booting now, I see the pink screen (without logo). After that it turns black and the cursor appears. Then its falshing around between beeing bright and dark and showing the cursor and not showing it. But no way i see the login-screen. At the moment i am not able to boot frm usb since my usb device is too large to be formated to FAT-32 (8GB). This all is happening on this machine: AMD E-350 Processor (2x1,65Ghz) 4GB DDR3 RAM 320GB SATA II Hard drive AMD® Radeon™ HD 6320 Thanks in advance to everyone who trys helping me ;) I have to continue working with data from this machine so i´d be pleased to get my data accessible. • How can I set external monitor as default?

  I have connected an external monitor to my laptop through HDMI. Currently either my Desktop is getting extended to the external monitor (with native resolution) or low resolution on both when I choose "Same Image in both". How can I ensure that the external monitor is used by default and the laptop monitor just blanks. • Homegroup doesn't show other computers, but "Network" does

  I have a desktop and a laptop (both running windows 7) in my Windows 7 homegroup. The desktop created the homegroup, and the laptop joined it. Both share a few folders. On the laptop, I have no problem accessing the Desktop's shared folders via the "Homegroup" sidebar button in Windows Explorer. However, on the Desktop, I get the message No other homegroup computers are currently available in the homegroup screen. However, if I go to the Network page, I can see the other computer and browse its shared media. These shares were made by right clicking and choosing "Share with Homegroup". I can access the media, so this isn't a big problem, but I'm just confused as to why the Homegroup screen denies the existence of the other computer. Has anybody else encountered and resolved this?

• How do I setup a systemd service to be started by a non root user as a user daemon?

  I just finished the install and setup process of systemd on my arch-linux system (2012.09.07). I uninstalled initscripts (and removed the configuration files). What I want to do is create a service that can be started and stopped by a non-root user. The service is to start a detached screen session running rtorrent. However I want every user on the system who has set this service to start (enabled) to have a particular instance started for them specifically. How would one go about doing this? I remember reading that systemd supports user instances of services, however I have been unable to find any information on how to set this up, or whether it relates to what I am looking for. • How can I recover [data from] my failing USB key?

  I have a Corsair Flash Voyager USB key, and it's almost completely failed. When I plug it into my [WinXP] computer, the OS mounts it and open up explorer to the drive's root directory. However, if I try to copy any data off, I get an error message saying that the device is not there. If I leave it plugged in, the OS seems to oscillate between seeing it and not seeing it, since the "Safely Remove Hardware" tray icon appears and disappears every few seconds. The damage was probably caused by my abuse, either from plugging it in with my keys hanging off of it or from losing the cap and keeping it in my pocket uncapped. Is there anything I can do to save the data from it or even rehabilitate the drive?

• A Virtual Dilemma

  Solving a Gotcha with VirtualBox Guest Additions I was just building a new virtual machine based off an existing image that didn’t have the Virtual Box Guest Additions enabled.  The guest additions allow tight integration between the guest OS and the host environment, providing seemless mouse transfer and the ability to take advantage of full video screen size.  The guest additions need to be linked with the kernel which requires the kernel-devel package to be installed.  After installing this package and then trying to add the guest additions it failed, suggesting that I might not have the kernel-devel package that I had installed.  After a little though I finally realized what had happened.  When I grabbed the kernel-devel package I hadn’t checked the version of my kernel.  The kernel-devel I downloaded didn’t match the revision of the kernel I was running!  Hence my problems.  I upgraded the kernel to the same revision as my kernel-devel package and rebooted.  I had installed dkms so I was pleased to see that my VBox Additions successfully built and the mouse and screen now worked as expected. So now you know my embarrassing story for the day :-)

• Ubuntu impossible to install: "unable to find a medium containing a live filesystem"

  Yes, I have read questions and answers with similar titles for this issue, which prevented me from installing Ubuntu for several MONTHS now, trying to figure it out. I have a MacBookPro with triple partition (one for Mac Snow Leopard, one for Windows 7, one for Linux) created with reFIT firmware (not BootCamp). I set up the system according to these instructions for reFIT: http://lifehacker.com/5531037/how-to-triple+boot-your-mac-with-windows-and-linux-no-boot-camp-required Now. There is a free partition ready to accept Linux into its arms, but Linux does not want to participate. Most answers to the issue "unable to find a medium containing a live filesystem" point to changing the BIOS booting system (which I don't know how to do, especially using this reFIT booting system), and to changing the socket of the USB (which does not concern me, since I am using a CD, actually I tried with a CD, then with a DVD, since a blank CD is only 700MB while the iso image file of Ubuntu is about 731MB). Anyway. This is what happens: I am in the Mac system (using the Mac partition) I insert the DVD with the burned image of Ubuntu (yes I have tried burning it again and agin on both CD and DVD blank discs). I restart the computer. When reFIT loads, I hold down the ALT key until the CD image appears. I select it, and hit Enter. A small Ubuntu icon appears at the bottom of the screen. Then a Ubuntu sign appears in the middle of the screen with small dots underneath, lighting up progressively over and over to indicate it's loading. Then everything turns black and the following message appears, at the end of a few lines of text: "unable to find medium with live file system". Please provide very practical suggestions on what to do to an unexperienced wannabe Ubuntu very patient user. Please start by saying how do I access the BIOS setup from reFIT bootup, and exactly what and why I need to try and change. (Will this mess up my reFIT bootup?) And anything else I need to do to finally be able to install Ubuntu. Thanks

• Amazon EC2 instances changes server time/date on reboots and other time weirdness

  I have a windows instance up in EC2. I manually set the timezone to Pacific. 1) For some reason using window's built in time sync doesn't work in the instance...but whatever. I turn off automatic time syncing... but 2) On reboot the time on the server changes! For example, if i reboot it at 4PM on Wednesday, when the server comes back up it will read 12 noon on Thursday! As a result any access to Amazon's other services like SImpleDB fail because the timestamps generated are too far off the current time. Has anyone seen this or figured this out?

• Libre Office/Writer PDF export: white borders appear between lines even after setting borders to none

  My document prints ok (exactly as it appears on the screen in Libre Office), but when I export to PDF and view the PDF on screen there are white borders around each text or picture object. Here's a sample snapshot from PDF/Preview: http://imgur.com/TWip5 I've tried selecting a paragraph and changing the border property to None as described in Libre Office help (http://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Borders), setting the "Line arrangement Default" to "Set no borders". But borders set by the Format dialog don't correspond to the borders I see in PDF/Preview. In PDF/Preview the border appears on line boundaries. Borders set in Format appear around each picture, for example. What am I doing wrong?

• disable subtitles in mkv in quicktime

  I want to watch movies without subtitles. And I also like QuickTime for the feature that it could extend the frame to fit the screen (even though it hides some area from the sides). I have Perian installed and I want to watch mkv files, but they are all with subtitles. In QuickTime in View-Subtitles the only option is Off, but still I can see the subtitles. VLC plays same movies without subtitles, but it doesn't have this nice feature of extending the movie frame so that it fits the screen.

• Could I centralize batch files more efficiently?

  I am new to the world of batch scripting so please forgive what may appear as basic questions. I am learning as I get assigned different jobs and I am a huge proponent of automation where possible. I have several batch files that perform several tasks. Each of these files had their paths hard-coded e.g. c:\temp. d:\data, etc in the batch file. Initially I moved these to a text file I could call from a batch file e.g. for /f "tokens=1,2 delims==" %%R in (config.txt) do ( if %%R==bdata set bdata=%%S if %%R==cdata set cdata=%%S ) The config.txt file contains these values bdata=c:\temp cdata=d:\data I realized that each time I would need to create a new variable, I would need to update the config.txt file as well the config.bat files. I decided I would move all the values to just the config.bat file as follows set bdata=c:\temp set cdata=d:\data I then updated each of the existing batch files to call the variables rather than the hard-coded paths. I also added the following lines of code to each batch file except config.bat. The only additional line added to the config.bat file is @echo off. @echo off setlocal enableextensions enabledelayedexpansion call config.bat I then have another batch file that centralizes calling all the batch files in sequence. The name of this batch file is start.bat. The reason I am using start /wait is because there have been instances of where the delete.bat runs before compress.bat has had an opportunity to finish. start /wait compress.bat start /wait validate.bat start /wait delete.bat Questions Is this the best way to centralize values and if not, what is a better way? Do I need to specify setlocal enableextensions enabledelayedexpansion in all the existing batch files? Do all the batch files have to have @echo off or is it sufficient for just the config.bat file? Is start /wait the best way to call multiple files? Can I pass values from one batch file to another using the said command? All the batch files have different functions e.g. move, delete, etc however use %%a or %%b. Is this okay? • Clustering in GlassFish with DCOM on Windows 7

  I've discovered that Windows 7 makes it very difficult to use DCOM and, mainly, the GlassFish clustering commands that rely on DCOM.  I spent a few days trying to solve the problems.  I don't yet have a cookbook for making DCOM work on Windows 7.  But here are a few tips and advice I've found. run asadmin setup-local-dcom -- It now comes automatically with the open source GlassFish 4.  It will write some critical registry entries for you.  run asadmin validate-dcom to test dcom 3.   When I ran validate-dcom on my Windows 7 network I saw the problem below: Successfully resolved host name to: gloin/10.28.51.10 Successfully connected to DCOM Port at port 135 on host gloin. Successfully connected to NetBIOS Session Service at port 139 on host gloin.Successfully connected to Windows Shares at port 445 on host gloin.Can not access the remote file system.  Is UAC on? : Access is denied. I discovered the actual problem is that Windows 7 no longer has the "C$" Administrative file share available by default. If "C$" isn't available then nothing will work. Here is how to expose the "C$" share: Registry Change -- this change allows “C$” to be accessed.  As soon as I set it -- the file copying started working!  [1] regkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System create this key, 32 bit word, with value == 1 LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy 4.  Turn on the Remote Registry Service -- This is critical and it's easy to do. Windows 7 has it turned off by default. MyComputer-right click, manage, services, then turn on Remote Registry Service and set it to start automatically in the fture. 5. Turn off UAC: %systemroot%\system32\UserAccountControlSettings.exe 6. This is where I discovered that McAfee virus scanner blocks all the NetBios shares!  It has to be disabled.

• Corporate IM with video that actually works, suggestions?

  Hi. Does anyone here have a suggestion for a cross-platform IM solution wich will work with voip/video on both Windows (XP and 7) and Mac OS X from 10.4 and upwards? Right now were in a kind of mixed enviroment, with some Mac users using iChat server since they need video support (conference across several offices over VPN), but it wont't work on windows clients. The rest of us are happily using Openfire+Spark, but there's no VoIP or video avaible from what i've found, unless you want to add in several 3rd party software (like red5 and asterisk). Requirements: As said before; must work on both Windows and Mac Internal server (no Skype etc) File transfer between platforms SSO (Single Sign-On) via Active Directory authentication Some sort of screen sharing would be a plus, like switching over to a screen capture (powerpoint, software training etc) We can afford to buy software if that's needed to get this working without any hiccups across platforms. Pre-thanks to anyone who gives suggestions.
