• Touchpad hardware button disables keyboard too

  I have an old but nice Samsung X50 running MM which has a key between the touchpad buttons which disables the touchpad. Very nice, no-one like to brush against the touchpad while typing. It seems to be a hardware feature -- a BIOS style window appears at the top left of the screen when you press it saying "touchpad off"; and when you press it again it says "touchpad on", and so it is, but now the keyboard has no effect in X, I can type nothing except to meta-ctl F1 to the console. After a reboot the problem persists; and the only way I have found to fix it is to blow away .gconf are replace it with a copy I made in happier times. Deleting/modifying .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/%gconf.xml does not fix the problem. There is no way to turn off the switch in BIOS without losing the touchpad. I would prise the thing out with a screwdriver if I could, but it's a work machine. This button is the bane of my life, hanging over me like a sword of Damocles.

• 256 SSD / 2TB Internal drive, i7, 16GB RAM.. explorer.exe still slow

  OK, so I just got done tweaking my brand new PC and explorer.exe still manages to be sluggish not as snappy as I'd like or expected at all. Specs are i7 4th gen processor, 16GB RAM, windows 7 64 home premium on 256GB SSD, secondary internal 2TB drive. I assumed system would be lightning fast, been doing a bunch of researching and switched out a lot of different settings including enabling/disabling indexing, turning pagefile on/off or placing it on separate drive, turning folder optimization options on/off.. changes have been minimal or none at all. Any further advice or anything I might be missing, besides a new/repair install? PC is literally 3 days old I don't feel like I need a new install at all

• sudo displays typed password in bash script

  Hullo, I have a bash script that uses sudo a few times. There's a couple of strange points about it though. It asks me for my password a few seconds after I've already entered it for a previous command. The second time I enter my password, it's echoed to the display. Here's the relevant bits of the script. sudo service apache2 stop drush sql-dump --root="$SITE_DIR" --structure-tables-key=svn --ordered-dump | grep -iv 'dump completed on' | sudo tee "$DB_DIR/${SITE_NAME}.sql" > /dev/null sudo svn diff "$DB_DIR" | less sudo svn commit -m "$MESSAGE" "$DB_DIR" sudo service apache2 start The first password is to stop apache, and it works as expected. As mentioned, the sudo tee doesn't 'remember' that I have elevated privileges, asks for the password again, and echoes it to the screen. Given that tee is all about echoing to screen, I've played around a little with simple scripts which have | sudo tee, and they all work as expected. Ideas?! TIA Andy

• dell u2410 3dMark Benchmark distortion problems

  Ive been doing burn in testing for a new system I have put together and I am running into some video distortion problems with running the 3DMark benchmark tools (Both 06 and Vantage). The graphics will be fine, then sometimes during a test switch the screen will light up with thin horizontal ranibow lines (Something that looks very "glitchy") If i turn the monitor off and back on it clears up. All the tests "pass" and my system gets good marks but it concerns me if I might have problems with games (The screen returns to normal if I dont resest monitor and just let tests pass). I want to return a problem component now before its too late if it is something with the new hardware. Also, I am monitoring temp with thermal laser gun and the card itself is not going above 65c. Any ideas? System: Asrock x58 Xtreme - Last BIOS (1.80) EVGA Geforce GTX 285 w/ latest nvidia drivers (Connect via DVI1) Dell U2410(Set to 59hz refresh 1900x1202 -although I believe benchmarks run 1200x1024) Windows 7 Ultimate 64 12Gb DDR3 1600 RAM

• Windows 2008 Incoming Connection: Where/How is Server IPv4 address defined

  We're evaluating a VM hosted externally which runs Windows Server 2008 R2 Web Server Edition and wish to access it via a VPN connection for maintenance and administration. RRAS isn't included in Web Server Edition, but it does have a form of VPN server called "Incoming Connections". This appears to work well and even supports multiple simultaneous connections. As we'll be using this VPN regularly we'd like to know if this is a viable solution or if we'd be better off upgrading to Standard Edition and full-fledged RRAS. In particular we're accessing the VM via the Private IP given by the Incoming Connection (currently 169.254.135.207) so we'd like know: if the server private IP might change every so often? if so is there any way to define it manually? or should we be using the server name rather than the private IP address? if so how can we be sure that it will resolve correctly? Name resolution over the "Incoming Connection" has worked on and off during our tests. Thanks for your help

• Are programmers a bunch of heartless robots who are lacking of empathy? [closed]

  OK, the provocative title got your attention. My experience as a programmer and dealing with my fellow programmers is that, a programmer is also usually someone who is so consumed by his programming work, so absorbed in his algorithmic construction that he has little passion/ time left for anything else, which includes empathy for other people, love and care for the people whom he love or should love ( such as their spouses, parents, kids, colleagues etc). The better a person is in terms of his programming powers, the more defective he is in terms of love/care because both honing programming skills and loving the surrounding takes time and one has only so much time to be allocated among so many different things. Also, programming ( especially INTERESTING programming job, like, writing an AI to predict the future search trend) is a highly consuming job; it doesn't just consume you from 9 to 5, it will also consume you after 5 and practically every second of your waking hours because a good programmer can't just magically switch off his thinking hat after the office lights go off ( If you can then I don't really think you are a passionate programmer, and the prerequisite of a good programmer is passion). So, a good programmer is necessarily someone who can't love as much as others do because the very nature of the programming job prevents him from loving others as much as he wants to. Do you concur with my observation/ reasoning?

• Affect movieclip scale from a .as doc to another

  I've been working on a game following a tutorial on the internet, the game is an avoider where you have the Avatar, that has to avoid the objects that fall. The way it is made is: I have a DocumentClass which addChild's the screen you should be seeing and removeChild's the screen that you were. For example: first it loads the menuScreen, then when you press play unloads menu and loads playscreen. When you die it loads the gameoverScreen and loads the playscreen. And from the gameOverScreen you can press the SHOP button to go to the shop. From here on I'm on my own and not following any tutorials. The shop has a button that is supposed to alter the Avatar's X and Y scale to 0.5, but the problem is: how do I make that work? I tried creating a sharedObject.data.avatarSize, on the store's size button the code would be something like: sharedObject.data.avatarSize *= 0.5; And on the AvoiderGame.as, which is the most of the actual game, on the part where the avatar is created I tried putting this after it's creation: scaleX.avatar = sharedObject.data.avatarSize; scaleY.avatar = sharedObject.data.avatarSize; This did not work since it gives me the error 1009 saying can't access something that is null. I tried this before "using" the sharedObject: if( sharedObject.data.avatarSize == null ) { sharedObject.data.avatarSize = 1; } But it did not work... So now I'm not sure on what to do. I know we should reduce global variables as much as we can but how do I do it? Also, if it helps, I'm using Flash CS5 and working with AS3.0

• Metacity malfunction preventing custom Gnome session from launching?

  When I try to run Metacity in Ubuntu2D(12.04), I get the following message: alisa@ubuntu:~$ metacity Window manager warning: Screen 0 on display ":2.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager. I get the same message when running Compiz from the command line in 3D (it opens fine through the GUI (same thing for AWN)). I understand that these should be the default managers for the respective sessions. I'm trying to create a custom Gnome session using the following instructions: unity launcher-free session. Here is what I've put into my .session file: [GNOME Session] Name=Custom Unity2D Session RequiredComponents=gnome-settings-daemon; RequiredProviders=windowmanager;panel; DefaultProvider-windowmanager=metacity DefaultProvider-panel=unity-2d-panel FallbackSession=ubuntu-2d DesktopName=GNOME Since I'm having problems identifying my default, and the code refers to Metacity, I figured this may be relevant to my inability to load the custom session (it shows up on my login screen, but won't launch). How do I determine my current default window manager, what should the default be, and how do I re-assign it?   I have formatted Canyon CN-MP4A USB flash drive with Disk Utility on Mac and now it is not recognized on any Mac or Windows machine. I have formatted with Disk Utility > drive > Erease > Format > MS-DOS (FAT). Now when I plug it in any Mac or Windows machine, nothing happens. Like nothing is plugged in. It has a screen, and I was able to format it directly from the device before, but now when I turn it on, welcome screen appears, but nothing else. I can not get to the menu. Is there a way I can format it? I am looking for the answer on the internet, but no luck so far.

• Windows 7 64bit making users login twice after waking up from sleep

  I have a few Windows 7 clients exhibiting this strange behavior when my users try to login to a domain. For the issue to occur then pc must have been asleep for about an hour or more, then a user will press Alt+Crtl+Del and enter their credentials. Once they try to login the screen will go black for a couple of seconds and then go back to initial screen prompting the user to press Alt+Crtl+Del again. After entering their credentials a second time, the user can login normally and continue to do so until the pc has been asleep for over an hour. Any ideas?

Is it possible to take a screenshot of my computer before the OS boots up WITHOUT an external computer or virtualization software like VMWare?? e.g. at the BIOS, or the "Windows is Loading" screen, even at the login screen? Is it possible to take screenshots of BSODs as well? EDIT: I'm using a desktop pc running Windows 7 Ultimate in a home environment. Thanks.

• System starts without sound in Lubuntu

  When I log in the sound is muted. Why is that? This image is from the Xfce mixer, while the lxde volume does not show that the sound is off. So, I can see the sound muted only in Xfce Mixer. But I can also start the sound in another application, Pulse Audio Volume Control, if I change a setting in Output Devices from Analog Mono Output to LFE on Mono Separate Devices: The Analog Mono Output option here sets in fact the Xfce Mixer in the mute position from the first image. Could this be related to managing sessions (and therefore to these question)? This happens in LXDE session as well as in Lubuntu session. Starting sound and logging out and in between any of these two sessions would mute the volume as shown. Starting the volume in one of these and logging out and then logging in into the Gnome session, the sound would be off; but then, after starting sound, logging out of Gnome and then logging in into any session, the sound would not be muted. But after restart it would be so no matter the session.

• Windows 7 / Media Center lock problem

  Hi, we have a Win7 with Media Center that is connected to a large screen. It displays a corporate slideshow near the coffeemachine. When the computer is started it automatically logs in and starts the slideshow. The problem is that on irregular time intervals (once a day, some days not) the slideshow stops and it switches to the login screen and shows which user is logged on. We don't know why this is happening. We first thought someone on the network was trying to open RDC connection to the machine, because it is the same sympthon like when you take over a machine by RDC with a different user, but nobody is doing that. Screensaver is disabled, energy settings "always on" Anybody ideas why this is happening?

  When I open a letter size PDF and then zoom to 100%, the page physically displayed on my monitor is smaller than a real letter size sheet of paper. How can I make "100%" on the computer screen correspond with "100%" in real life? Details This message suggests that I should be investigating the system-wide DPI settings for my monitor. xdpyinfo reports: dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (271x203 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch My monitor has a native display resolution of 1024x768 pixels and a diagonal display size of 12.07 inches. PX CALC returns the following information: DPI: 106.05 Dot Pitch: 0.2395mm Size: 9.66" × 7.24" (24.53cm × 18.39cm) What I've tried so far Running xrandr --dpi 106.05 successfully caused my PDF to appear actual size at 100%, but this effect was lost after rebooting. • How to make a legacy system time-zone sensitive?

  I need to implement time zones in a very large and old Delphi system, where there's a central SQL Server database and possibly hundreds of client installations around the world in different time zones. The application already interacts with the database by only using the date/time of the database server. So, all the time stamps saved in both the database and on the client machines are the date/time of the database server when it happened, never the time of the client machine. So, when a client is about to display the date/time of something (such as a transaction) which is coming from this database, it needs to show the date/time converted to the local time zone. This is where I get lost. I would naturally assume there should be something in SQL to recognize the time zone and convert a DateTime field dynamically. I'm not sure if such a thing exists though. If so, that would be perfect, but if not, I need to figure out another way. This Delphi system (multiple projects) utilizes the SQL Server database using ADO components, VCL data-aware controls, and QuickReports (using data sources). So, there's many places where the data goes directly from the database query to rendering on the screen, without any code to actually put this data on the screen. In the end, I need to know when and how should I get the properly converted time? What is the proper way to ensure that I handle Dates and Times correctly in a legacy application?

  C4C, in Kansas City, is always a fun event. At points it gets to be a pressure cooker as you zone in trying to crank out some fantastic code in just a few hours, but it is always fun. A great challenge of your skill as a software developer and for a good cause. This year my team helped The United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Kansas City organization to add online job applications and a database for tracking internal training. I keep finding that there is one key rule to pulling off a successful C4C weekend project, and that is “Keep It Simple”. Each time you want to add that one cool little feature you have to ask yourself.. Is it really necessary? and Do I have time for that? And if you are going to learn something new you should ask yourself if you’re really going to be able to learn that AND finish the project in the given time. Sometimes the less elegant code is the better code if it works. That said… You get a great amount of freedom to build the solution the way you want.   How to get my information off my old hard drive to my new one So I wanna know can anyone help me Laptop stop working and have me a hard disk error I finally got it to boot up again after playing with it, and I tried to copy my stuff and it froze on me and hasn't booted since Bought another hard drive and ended up making an image of my friends computer but couldn't get my stuff off my old drive so I tried the freezer method now and I put it in for two hours and it didn't boot but I'm putting it back in for 12hrs So my end result is I just wanna get my drive up enough to create an image of my CPU to my new hard drive and is there another way I could do it if my hard drive won't boot!! But here's the kickers when I made the image of my friends computerized up loaded it to the new hard drive and I have my old hard drive plugged up to an USB enclosure so I need help. Thanks in advance!!!

• New apache on mac

  I have installed php5 apache2 mysql5 and postgresql84 using MacPorts. I realize my mac already has apache but it didn't have apache2 nor postgesql hooked up to use with php. I want to not use the default apple apache and use the new macports install. How do I tell my computer to stop looking at the old apache? When I do apachectl in the terminal I believe it is using the old apache. I would like to hook it up to use the new one. How would I do that? The new stuff is installed at /opt/local/apache2 and the old stuff is installed at /private/etc/apache2 I went to system preferences...Sharing...and shut off Web Sharing but when I do apachectl's that turns it on and off in the preferences. I'm running in Snow Leopard.

• Why does my terrain turn white when I get close to it?

  When I zoom in on my terrain it goes white: The further in I zoom, the greater the whiteness becomes. Is this normal? Is this to speed up rendering or something? Can I turn it off? I'm also getting these error messages in the console over and over again: rc.right != m_GfxWindow-GetWidth() || rc.bottom != m_GfxWindow-GetHeight() and GUI Window tries to begin rendering while something else has not finished rendering! Either you have a recursive OnGUI rendering, or previous OnGUI did not clean up properly. Does this bear any correlation on the issue? Update I create virtual desktops to flit between using the program Deskpot. Turning this program off and restarting has stopped the above errors appearing in the console. However, I still get white terrain when I zoom in. Not a single error message. I've restarted my computer to no avail. I have an Asus NVidia GeForce GTX 760 2GB DDR5 Direct CU II OC Edition Graphics Card. Any known issues? Update I don't think it's fog...

• Terminal Services - MS Access Frequently "Not Responding"

  Exposition: We use a program built in MS Access that I serve via Terminal Services. I just installed a new TS Server with a Quad Core 2.6GHz Xeon, 8GB RAM, and 4 SATA drives in a RAID 0. In installed Server 2008 R2 (64bit obviously). It's only role is TS. The problem: With just a few sessions (under 10), I start getting frequent Not Responding messages in each session. When it happens, the users aren't doing anything particularly taxing, just form navigation and simple insert queries. I can live with some stalls, but it is visually jarring in WS08 because the screen goes gray, and it presents a dialog offering to wait or close with some other options. Questions: Any suggestions for improving performance and reducing hangs? Is it possible to disable the dialog (always wait) and screen graying?

• Help with running crontab from root

  Im using OSX and having trouble getting a cron job to run. I type the following: $ sudo -i $ crontab -e I then enter: * * * * * root ifconfig en0 down > /dev/null 0 19 * * * root ifconfig en0 down > /dev/null 0 7 * * * root ifconfig en0 up > /dev/null and no success, the first line is for testing. I want it to shut off my internet. The next two lines I plan to leave in, once I get this working. If I type this in to the terminal the internet goes off ifconfig en0 down Why is my cron job not shutting down the internet? FYI: This is a follow up question from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3027362/how-can-i-write-a-cron-job-that-will-block-my-internet-from-7pm-to-7am-so-i-can most of the comments there are people making fun of me. And a few attempts to solve the problem with out cron jobs.
