• Could replacing an old hard drive's circuit board make it work again?

  I have a 12-year-old, 10gb Maxtor drive that died on me around 7 years ago, but I have not had the heart to throw it away. When the computer powers on, it whirrs silently as it tries to spin up and then it stops. So, a few years ago, I sent it off for professional data recovery. They were able to retrieve quite a bit from it, but I know there's a bunch more there. It only cost $700, so I just chalked up the lackluster recovery effort to "you get what you pay for" considering that most companies will charge you several thousands of dollars for this kind of data recovery. When they sent the drive back, I couldn't help but plug it back in just to see if maybe they unjammed something in the process of disassembling/reassembling the drive. To my surprise, the drive had a much healthier spin-up sound and actually stayed spinning for several minutes before winding down to a halt. Windows is even able to detect and interact with the drive, but I get I/O errors after so many minutes of waiting for it to mount. Before I start doing stupid stuff with it like dropping it on the ground, freezing it, crapping on it, etc, I decided to buy the exact same model off Ebay so that I could swap the circuit boards as a last-ditch effort. While it's en route, I thought I'd come here to ask if this is even a worthwhile effort and, if even remotely so, what should I know before ripping off the old board and slapping on the new?

• SQL Server 2005 Disk Configuration: Single RAID 1+0 or multiple RAID 1+0s?

  Assuming that the workload for the SQL Server is just a normal OLTP database, and that there are a total of 20 disks available, which configuration would make more sense? A single RAID 1+0, containing all 20 disks. This physical volume would contain both the data files and the transaction log files, but two logical drives would be created from this RAID: one for the data files and one for the log files. Or... Two RAID 1+0s, each containing 10 disks. One physical volume would contain the data files, and the other would contain the log files. The reason for this question is due to a disagreement between me (SQL Developer) and a co-worker (DBA). For every configuration that I've done, or seen others do, the data files and transaction log files were separated at the physical level, and were placed on separate RAIDs. However, my co-workers argument is that by placing all the disks into a single RAID 1+0, then any IO that is done by the server is potentially shared between all 20 disks, instead of just 10 disks in my suggested configuration. Conceptually, his argument makes sense to me. Also, I've found some information from Microsoft that seems to supports his position. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc966414.aspx In the section titled "3. RAID10 Configuration", showing a configuration in which all 20 disks are allocated to a single RAID 1+0, it states: In this scenario, the I/O parallelism can be used to its fullest by all partitions. Therefore, distribution of I/O workload is among 20 physical spindles instead of four at the partition level. But... every other configuration I've seen suggests physically separating the data and log files onto separate RAIDs. Everything I've found here on Server Fault suggests the same. I understand that a log files will be write heavy, and that data files will be a combination of reads and writes, but does this require that the files be placed onto separate RAIDs instead of a single RAID?

• Gnome 3 application Icons disappeared

  I edited my main menu settings (unchecked items inside a sub menu) when it happened that the window freezed and all entries on the left side disappeared (Office, System, Settings, Games, ...). I didn't think much about it, but when I restarted my computer all application entries in my menu and my favorites (quickstart bar on the left side) where gone. When I go to activities - applications I just see the "All" entry without any items to click on. ~/.config/menu/gnome-applications.menu is an empty file and ~/.config/menu/gnome-settings.menu has the folowing content: <!DOCTYPE Menu PUBLIC '-//freedesktop//DTD Menu 1.0//EN' 'http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/menu-1.0.dtd'> <Menu> <Name>Desktop</Name> <MergeFile type="parent">/etc/xdg/menus/gnome-settings.menu</MergeFile> </Menu> I also looked into the files under /etc/xdg/menus. They look like template files without any reference to actual installed programs. I assume that due to a bug it deleted all my menu settings. Is there any way to restore at least the default menu? Or are there any other places to look for my old configuration?

• Changing farm account in Sharepoint 2010

  After changing the the farm account to a domain user account I get the following error when trying to access the Central Administration page: "Cannot connect to configuration database" After I realized the headache may not be worth it, I decided to a reinstall using the following SP user account guidelines: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee662513.aspx After getting everything up, I am getting an error when using the designated farm account under the Central Admin Website Manage Service Accounts: "Access denied" If it is the farm administrator, why would I not be able to manage service accounts? I am able to access the other part of the admin site. Also, when logging in with the farm account it lists me as a "system account" not the domain account which I used for log in. Am I missing something or is this normal behavior? Am I not suppose to login with the farm account? When I log in with the Setup account (also a domain account) I can access everything with no errors on the site. The only difference between the two accounts is one has local admin privileges on the Sharepoint farm server which is the setup account. if you notice those privileges are not necessary for the farm account according to the article cited.

• Asterisk relay between multiple subnets

  I wonder what's the best way to go when you have phones on multiple networks which are not directly reachable. I have 3 networks 10.3.x.x 10.6.x.x 10.17.x.x My asterisk server resides on the 10.3.0.5 IP. The machines from the 10.6 and 10.17 networks are routed here through VPN tunnels. At this point we don't talk about NAT anywhere on the network just pure routing. Since the 10.3.0.5 PBX has routes back to all the subnet's it has no problem to communicate with softphones/hardphones from these ranges. The problem comes from that Asterisk (as far as I understand) only responsible for the SIP communication part not the Audio/Video transmission which is in P2P fashion done between the devices. So although a client using sipdroid from 10.6.x.x is able to connect to the pbx (10.3.0.5) and dial a bria client on the 10.17.x.x network once the phone rings out and the call establishes no audio will be transmitted simply because it has no way to directly connect there. For this there are multiple solutions described in this text: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee480411%28v=winembedded.60%29.aspx What I would prefer is to keep these networks segregated as they are now. What would be the best solution? Is it possible to actually relay through all the audio/video information through the Asterisk server? • C# lost local variable window from debug (f11 step by step)

  I was running my code (visual studio 2010) and I accidentally closed the window that shows the state of variables step by step. I think it was called locals but I can't find it on any of the menu option. Would appreciate any help on this, I didn't realize how handy it was until now - The following link is what my local window looks like when selecting debug/start debugging/selecting breakpoints, which I'm don't find helpful. • Bing Desktop not updating the wallpaper anymore

  For some reason, first my workstation and then my tablet stopped updating the wallpaper. First I thought it was my company that was avoiding the app to work properly but then I started noticing that the app itself is a mess: It has two storage and formats for the wallpapers: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\BingDesktop\en-US\Apps\Wallpaper_5386c77076d04cf9a8b5d619b4cba48e\VersionIndependent\images with a #####.jpg (single number) image format & C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\BingDesktop\themes with a ####-##-##.jpg (date) image format. I read here that deleting the themes folder it will get remade with the new images, and it worked. However those are not the files used by the Wallpaper app and deleting the images folder won't get the same result. I have added Bing Desktop to the Firewall white list and the issue is still there. Any ideas? Currently I'm using DisplayFusion to place the wallpaper manually because the company doesn't allow change the wallpapers (policies). Note: I wrote to the DisplayFusion developers to suggest adding a feature to support Bing Wallpapers.   I've read several of the related topics posted here, but I have not been able to avoid this innodb error. The steps I've taken to replicate data from a Slackware server - 5.5.27-log (S) to a FreeBSD slave - 5.5.21-log (F) were these: (S) flush tables with read lock; (S) in another terminal show master status; (S) stop mysqld via command line in third terminal; (F) while both servers are stopped, rsync mysql datadir from (S), excluding master.info, mysql-bin and relay-* files; (F) start mysqld (skip-slave) 121018 12:03:29 InnoDB: Error: page 7 log sequence number 456388912904 InnoDB: is in the future! Current system log sequence number 453905468629. InnoDB: Your database may be corrupt or you may have copied the InnoDB InnoDB: tablespace but not the InnoDB log files. See InnoDB: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/forcing-innodb-recovery.html InnoDB: for more information. This kind of error happens for a lot of tables. I know I can use dump, but the database is large, ca. 70GB and the systems are slow (old), so would like to get this replication to work with data transfer. What should I try to solve this issue?

• .htaccess redirect working on localhost but not on server

  I want users who hit my web site's root directory to be sent to a subdirectory. So anyone going to: http://MyDomain.com or /index.php would be sent to http://MyDomain.com/subdir I used the .htaccess file to successfully do this on my local machine (with Apache 2). But it doesn't work on the server? Users still see the default index.php in the root directory. Here is my simple .htaccess file. Any ideas? • What are the side effects of disabling an Exchange mailbox?

  When working with Exchange Server 2007 or newer, disabling a mailbox is a fairly common operation. However, the Technet documentation has no details about the side effects of disabling a mailbox. This is all it says. "This task removes all the Exchange attributes from the user object in Active Directory. Based on the deleted items retention policy, the Exchange store will retain mailbox data for the user object." Perhaps the boss has delegated calendar control to a secretary. Maybe a team of staff members all share access to a public folder. Perhaps a power user has been granted the ability to receive email at several different addresses. Two clear questions come to mind. What happens to links between mailboxes after a mailbox is disconnected? Can the Disable-Mailbox operation be easily undone?

• Trouble Starting MySL Community Server on Windows 7

  I have installed Netbeans 7 on my Windows 7. In addition, the MySQL Community Server 5.6.12 is installed with the MSI installer on thesame 7 PC. The MySQL server is integrated with the Netbeans IDE. However , it is not possible to start or stop the MySQL server from the command prompt or the Netbeans IDE. I am only able to start or stop the server from the Windows 7 services tool. Also , it is difficult running SQL queries from the Netbeans IDE even though it shows there is connection with the MySQL server.   Hi all, Maybe my question is wired: is there a way to prevent jQueryUI tabs from floating if browser window is too small? Explanation: I have a simple horizontal tab using CSS only. The content is floating but not the tabs. Important: there is no width set manually, the current width is taken automatically.   Hi all, Maybe my question is wired: is there a way to prevent jQueryUI tabs from floating if browser window is too small? Explanation: I have a simple horizontal tab using CSS only. The content is floating but not the tabs. Important: there is no width set manually, the current width is taken automatically. • http server implentation, the page does not show properly

  well, as i am doing a small project of coding an http server. the code is at http://code.google.com/p/reactor/ the current puzzle is when asked to parse a page with java script and css. As an http server it just sends a page (copied from another website) and it parsed inproperly. when a simple html page is been parse , by my firefox, it shows ok, however when parsing a more complex   Hi, I have some issues with my email -body when i send mails I'm using php in my site. My website is a spanish site , when ever i send a mail some special characters are comming in that mail. • Referencing CDI producer method result in h:selectOneMenu

  I have a named session scoped bean CustomerRegistration which has a named producer method getNewCustomer which returns a Customer object. There is also CustomerListProducer class which produces all customers as list from the database. On the selectCustomer.xhtml page the user is then able to select one of the customers and submit the selection to the application which then simply prints out the last name of the selected customer. Now this only works when I reference the selected customer on the facelets page via #{customerRegistration.newCustomer}. When I simply use #{newCustomer} then the output for the last name is null whenever I submit the form. What's going on here? Is this the expected behavior as according to chapter 7.1 Restriction upon bean instantion of JSR-299 spec? It says: ... However, if the application directly instantiates a bean class, instead of letting the container perform instantiation, the resulting instance is not managed by the container and is not a contextual instance as defined by Section 6.5.2, “Contextual instance of a bean”. One thing I noticed is that that logs show up immediately in My Azure Table Storage. I wonder if this is expected with Custom Trace Listeners or because I am in a development environment.
