• .net 4 Chart Control - Hide labels in pie chart

  Hello all. Am I going mad/blind? Probably a combination of the two. How does one go about removing the data labels from a pie chart with the new chart control in .net 4? I can get these to display as tooltips absolutely fine, but ultiamtely I'd like the labels not to be present as it looks rather busy. I've searched previous answers and seen code behind resolutions but surely there must be some sort of code infront option to turn these labels off? Apologies for being thick/blind.

• Preventing spam bots on site?

  We're having an issue on one of our fairly large websites with spam bots. It appears the bots are creating user accounts and then posting journal entries which lead to various spam links. It appears they are bypassing our captcha somehow -- either it's been cracked or they're using another method to create accounts. We're looking to do email activation for the accounts, but we're about a week away from implementing such changes (due to busy schedules). However, I don't feel like this will be enough if they're using an SQL exploit somewhere on the site and doing the whole cross site scripting thing. So my question to you: If they are using some kind of XSS exploit, how can I find it? I'm securing statements where I can but, again, its a fairly large site and it'd take me awhile to actively clean up SQL statements to prevent XSS. Can you recommend anything to help our situation?

• Is there a sample set of web log data available for testing analysis against?

  Sorry if this isn't strictly speaking a programming question, but I figure my best chance of success would be to ask here. I'm developing some web log file analysis algorithms, but to date I only have access to a fairly small amount of web log data to process. One algorithm I want to use makes some assumptions about 'the shape' of typical web log data, and so I'd like to test it against a larger 'exemplar' - perhaps the logs of a busy site with a good distribution of traffic from different sources etc. Is there a set of such data available somewhere? • Do you take the pain of learning it or use an out of the box solution?

  Hi all What I'm getting at here is being presented with a control or framework that does 95% of what you want but has its shortcomings when opposed to learning how to do it yourself. To give a good example (ASP.Net) UpdatePanel vs DIY JS/JSON. The UpdatePanel gives you AJAX instantly without doing anything additional, however I've come to learn that its shortcomings are mainly that it's a bit of a hack and performs badly on busy pages and I've found myself having to scrap UpdatePanels in favour of rolling my own JS, and I've now made it a habit to fully investigate any shortcomings in out-of-the-box solutions, as I've been stung by this experience. So I guess what I'm asking is: Is it better to find out how to DIY or is it considered a better approach to try the available solution and risk going a full circle? Obviously I've only targetted a single control, but it is a very attractive control to people learning AJAX - I'm sure there are others out there. Sorry if dupliate. Thanks

• Mysql SET NAMES UTF8 - how to get rid of?

  In a very busy PHP script we have a call at the beginning to "Set names utf8" which is setting the character set in which mysql should interpret and send the data back from the server to the client. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/charset-applications.html I want to get rid of it so I set default-character-set=utf8 In our server ini file. (see link above) The setting seems to be working since the relevant server parameters are : 'character_set_client', 'utf8' 'character_set_connection', 'utf8' 'character_set_database', 'latin1' 'character_set_filesystem', 'binary' 'character_set_results', 'utf8' 'character_set_server', 'latin1' 'character_set_system', 'utf8' But after this change and commenting out set names utf8 call still the data starts to come out garbled. Please advise....

• GAE Having Tasks generate pages for user

  I have a web app that I would like to have the following functionality: user gives a url webapp gets json data from that url and others from same website (this can take anywhere from 1-10 seconds) webapp uses data to generate page for user With this approach, I believe that if the server is in the process of getting the data for one user, then the other user won't be able to load the page (server busy). I would like to avoid this if possible. It seems like the Google Tasks API would be useful for this, but I don't see how I can run the task, and then use the output of the task to generate the page (how would the main app know when the task was finished?) What is the best way to resolve this? Thanks in advance

• .NET --- Textbox control - wait till user is done typing

  Greetings all, Is there a built in way to know when a user is done typing into a textbox? (Before hitting tab, Or moving the mouse) I have a database query that occurs on the textchanged event and everything works perfectly. However, I noticed that there is a bit of lag of course because if a user is quickly typing into the textbox the program is busy doing a query for each character. So what I was hoping for was a way to see if the user has finished typing. So if they type "a" and stop then an event fires. However, if they type "all the way" the event fires after the y keyup. I have some ideas floating around my head but I'm sure they aren't the most efficient. Like measuring the time since the last textchange event and if it was than a certain value then it would proceed to run the rest of my procedures. let me know what you think. • Android: 2D. OpenGl or android.graphics.drawable?

  I'm working with my friend on our first Android game. Basic idea is that every frame the whole surface is redrawn (1 large bitmap) which then sprinkled all over with large number of particles which produces effect of soapy bubbles where there's a pool of about 20 bitmaps which randomly gets picked to produce illusion that all bubbles (between 200 - 300) are all different. The math engine is in C (JNI) and currently all drawing is done using android.graphics package very similar (since that was the example I was using) to Lunar Lander. It works but animation is somewhat jerky and I can feel by temperature of my phone that it is very busy. Will we benefit from switching to OpenGL? And as a bonus question: what would be a good way to optimize the drawing mechanism (Lunar Lander like) we have now?

• Keep an ASP.NET IIS website responsive when time between visits is long

  After years of ASP.NET development I'm actually quite surprised that I can't seem to find a satisfying solution for this. Why does an IIS ASP.NET site always seem to fall asleep (for 2-6 seconds) after a certain time of inactivity (after several hours), during which no HTTP response is sent from server to client. This happens on any type of site, one page or many, db or not, regardless the settings. How can I fix this? During the wait time, the server is not busy and there are no high peaks or (.NET) memory shortages. My guess is, it has to do with Windows moving the IIS process to the background and its memory to the page file, but I'm not sure. Anybody any idea? EDIT: one solution is to send some HTTP request once an hour or so, but I hope for something more constructive. EDIT: what I meant is: after hours of inactivity, it pauses several seconds on any new HTTP request.

• How does Gmail do comet on Opera?

  I would like to know how Gmail (or anyone else) does comet on Opera. Here is what I know so far from my experiments. It doesn't use the event-source tag which is broken in Opera 10.51. It doesn't use iframe which displays a spinning throbber and a busy mouse cursor. It doesn't use responseText on xmlhttprequest when readyState = 3 which is known to be broken on Opera. I tried seeing how it was done in mibbit and etherpad, and I found that they both use long-polling.

• Why are nanosleep() and usleep() too slow?

  I have a program that generates packets to send to a receiver. I need an efficient method of introducing a small delay between the sending of each packet so as not to overrun the receiver. I've tried usleep() and nanosleep() but they seem to be too slow. I've implemented a busy wait loop and had more success, but it's not the most efficient method, I know. I'm interested in anyone's experiences in trying to do what I'm doing. Do others find usleep() and nanosleep() to function well for this type of application? Thanks, Danny Llewallyn

• Is it possible to have Ant print out the classpath for a particular target? If so, how?

  I'm trying to get a target to build that has quite a long list of <pathelement location="${xxx}"/> and <path refid="foo.class.path"/> elements in its <path id="bar.class.path"> element (in the build.xml file). I keep getting "package com.somecompany.somepackage does not exist" errors, and I'm having a hard time chasing down these packages and making sure I've synced them from our repository. I'm new to this team so I'm unfamiliar with the build, but I would prefer to figure this out myself if possible (so I don't bother the other very busy team members). I have very limited experience with Ant. I think it would save me quite a bit of time if I could have Ant print out the classpath for the target I'm trying to build.

• Running a python script in background from a CGI

  I have a python CGI which runs some script in the background and shows the stdout in the html page. I run the script when the user clicks some button in the page. My problem is when the script starts running the page becomes busy and the user can't use the other client side features in the page. What I want is: The script should run in background when the user clicks the button and should notify the CGI when run is complete. Then the CGI show should the stdout of the script run. How can this be done?

  I am working in .Net 3.5, looking at all the various constructors for Activator.CreateInstance. I want to create an instance of a class, calling a particular constructor. I do not have the class type, only its name. I have the following, which works, but actually winds up calling the parameterless constructor first, then the one I want. This is not a terribly big deal, but the parameterless constructor calls a rather busy base constructor, and the constructor I want to call does, too. In other words, given a type, calling CreateInstance with parameters is easy (only the last two lines below), but given only a type name, is there a better way than this? • TCP and UDP are using different OS Buffer?

  HI all. Here is the scenario. I have port 8888 for my program to use. I build a TCP and a UDP listener on that port. (This can do, c# allows, because they are two different protocols) My question is If the network traffic is very busy, TCP sockets may refuse or signalling the other end to stop sending things, it is called congestion control, right? So if TCP is congestion controlling, other ends may not send more data, in this "TCP quiet period", UDP channel should have not that much of traffic, right? I want to figure out the TCP traffic will affect UDP traffic or not?

  (WPF) We have been asked to build a little window that pops up when the app is busy (instead of or in addition to a wait cursor). We put a textblock in the window, and a ProgressBar with IsIndeterminate = true. We call show on the little window, and then start up our long-running process, calling Close on the little window when we are through. However, during the long-running process, the ProgressBar does not show any activity, and the little window shows (Not Responding) in its title. Is this even possible? A better idea?

  I just got a book that goes over all the VS2010 tools. Most I have never used like load testing/web testing, UML Tools, Layer Diagrams.... Has anyone had any real world experience with using these VS2010 tools like the UML diagramming? I am wondering if it is something that would really be useful starting a new project or is it just busy work that no one ever uses once they are made? How are the UML diagrams integrated with the rest of development in VS2010 ? The last project we just made some really basic Visio diagrams but maybe this is better. Alot of VS2010 Ultimate tools are over kill (layer diagram) for small/mid level projects it seems. UML seems to be one of those things I hear about past 10 years but never seem to use.

• How can I see who in my team are writing the most code and who is writing the least using TFS?

  I am having a problem with one of my team members output. He seems to be always 'busy' yet I am unable to see exactly what code he has done and he seems be delivering very little and it seems to take a long time to do so. I'd like to investigate further using TFS and was wondering if there is any functionality in TFS that shows what has been written by an individual or similar? • Coldfusion CFC creation taking a variable amout of time to execute.

  I've been doing some logging of object creation times in our open account process in production. Periodically, initializing an object would take way longer than expected. By initializing I mean calling it's init() and passing a couple of arguments that may be simple variables or objects. e.g. <cfset validateObj = createObject("component", "compExample").init( productionMode = VARIABLES.productionMode, ipWhiteListed = isWhiteListed, ipLocatorObj = VARIABLES.ipLocatorObj ) /> Thats all that happens in init() methods. Generally the execution time would be 0ms, but at random times I might get 3 or 3.5 seconds. This is not specific to one particular server or to our generally busy period. It appears to be quite random. One thought was that these templates were being evicted from our template cache as they are not especially frequently used, although I checked cfstat on a number of servers and the max CP/Sec is -1. Running CF 8,0,1 Has anybody else ever come across this?

• Catching the redirected address from NSURLConnection

  I'm working on a software which follows the HTTP redirection which is dynamically calculated by the server depending on a pparameter. I don't want to show the primary server in Mobile Safari but rather the redirected address only. The following code workks: request = [NSMutableURLRequest requestWithURL:originalUrl cachePolicy:NSURLRequestReloadIgnoringCacheData timeoutInterval:10]; [NSURLConnection sendSynchronousRequest:request returningResponse:&response error:&error]; // Extract the redirected URL target = [response URL]; The problem is that the server requires several seconds to answer. The sendSynchronousRequest blocks the app for this time completely which is messy, I can't even display the "Busy" animation. Does anyone know how I can retrieve the redirected address asynchronously without safari appearance in the meanwhile with the redirecting server URL or display some sort of the "Be patient" animation during the sendSynchronousRequest? What disadvantages would have the passing of sendSynchronousRequest in another thread?

  A few years ago there was a PHP script around called paFileDB. Essentially it created a database of files that end users could download and rate. It would keep track of the number of downloads as well. I am looking for a replacement of this coded in ASP.net C#. For the last week I have been searching around for "asp.net C# file database" and have just gotten how to upload files to a database. I have also search with some other terms. I do not need a full blown CMS like DotNetNuke or SharePoint. All I have been looking for is a system I could easily add to my existing .net C# site. I have thought about coding one myself, but with me being rather busy at work and this being a personal project, I simply do not have the time to code this myself. I hope that you guys can help. • how to save the compose message text in draft automatically ?

  Hello, we have a vb.net application with send and receive mailing also. Now we have added a session timer of 30 min but the users are complaining that they are facing a problem when they write a long text message or while composing they get busy in something else and when they return back to continue composing message , they are redirected to a session expiry page, and their long text message is gone forever. So I am new to this and I was thinking like , when the user is in compose message the text should be automatically saved to drafts like hotmail. Any help will be appreciated . Thank you.
