• How to Eliminate Black Bars from Powerpoint videos ?

  Hi, I am running a digital signage system for my client. The basic installation is a vertically oriented 42" LCD TV with a 1920x1080 screen resolution (reverse of 1920x1080 when setup normally, i.e. landscaped). Please check out the following link for a basic screen divisions layout I want to setup. http://flickr.com/photos/55097319@N03/5410208856 In the division labeled "ppt" I plan to run a powerpoint presentation. The screen division is 360x1476 resolution. As there isn't an option in powerpoint to specify slide size in terms of resolution so according to this article on indezine http://indezine.com/products/powerpoint/books/perfectmedicalpres02.html to get a screen resolution of my preference I divided 360 and 1476 each by 72 which gives me 5"x 20.5" as the slide size for my ppt. After setting up slide size as per above dimensions, I used sizer (http://brianapps.net) to resize my ppt window to 360x1476 so that when I record I do not get any black bars. But after launching recording there are side black bars visible which camtasia records and brings-inside cam studio with black bars. http://www.flickr.com/photos/55097319@N03/5409597049 My question is that after doing the above and as explained in the following video link why do I still get black bars. http://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/eliminate_black_bars_in_your_powerpoint_recordings Is there an option in camtasia to stretch the recording to cover up black bars or any other alternative way I can get rid of those black bars while I get a ppt recorded as per my preferred dimensions. Notes: In the techsmith video above it asks to adjust my desktop screen resolution which my display chipset does not allow me to set. I set up show in powerpoint to be "browsed by an individual(window)". Also signage software only supports swf's and video file formats natively and not ppt, pptx etc. Thanks bhavani.

• RDP for High DPI Monitors?

  A client is having some problems with their laptop. They use RDP to remote into their work PC, but the laptop they are using is a small 13" Sony Vaio laptop, but with 1920x1080 resolution. Everything is pretty small on the laptop anyway, but the problem is much worse after connecting with RDP, where everything is almost unreadable. I have done the obvious with changing the resolution on the server, the RDP size, forced scaling on the terminal server etc, but nothing has worked. Something else which I would normally do is change the laptop resolution to something a little lower, but the laptop only has 2 resolution settings, the big one, and a 1024x768 (wrong ratio). Any ideas?

• Virtual PC 2007 Full Screen Resolution

  I have a laptop (1440 x 900) and an external monitor (1920 x 1200), and I'm running Virtual PC 2007. Initially, my VPC could not switch to fullscreen mode on my external monitor because the max resolution for VPC was only 1600 x 1200. I installed a hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958162) and after the hotfix, I was able to view VPC in fullscreen mode on my external monitor, but now I'm unable to view fullscreen on my laptop. It says "please check that the resolution of the guest is not higher than that of the host". I even tried to decrease the resolution of my Virtual PC to less than than of my laptop, but it always resets it back up. So now after the hotfix, I can view fullscreen mode only when my external monitor is plugged in. Any way I can resolve this?

• Wrong screen resolution with HDMI output to HDTV

  I own an HDTV with a native resolution of 1360x768. Sometimes I plug in my laptop to watch movies, and I used to do it with a VGA cable. I've had no problem setting the laptop to the TV native resolution with the VGA cable (1360x768). Having acquired an HDMI cable recently, I can't go past 1280x720, and if I do, the TV displays "invalid format". At 1280x720, the image is viewable but not centered, so for example I can't see the windows taskbar or titlebars. I've tried both cables (VGA and HDMI) with the same settings: Laptop's display turned off and trying to set the Tv's native resolution. What could I try to fix this issue? Could it be a faulty cable? (I'm using a Thinkpad with Windows 7) EDIT: My graphics adapter appears listed as Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Searching for my laptop's model yields Intel GMA 4500MHD as the graphic card) I'm downloading a driver update from Intel's website. I'll report my progress when I check its behavior tomorrow.

• Monitor does not work past certain resolution.

  I have a Macbook 5.1 with Snow Leopard, and a Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW that I use for an external monitor. I connect it to my laptop via a DVI-to-MiniDisplayPort adapter. Whenever I try to set the resolution of the monitor to 1680x1050, its maximum resolution (at least the only one that fills the entire screen), the screen flickers once or twice before claiming there is no source attached. I've had this issue since the first time I tried to connect the two, however for some reason for a brief period in time the monitor would successfully display at full resolution. All lower resolutions work fine too, it's just at 1680x1050 that the problems occur. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Thanks.

• virtual box strectch to fit resolution

  Hey guys I have a really annoying problem, that I hope someone has figured out. I just installed ubuntu on virtual box and installed the guest additions so everything was great. I had a resolution that stretched across my screen from left to right and the only virtual box components that were visible were the windows vista title bar : minimize/exit/maximize buttons and virtual box controls at the bottom. Now all of a sudden now that I have installed the ubuntu 170mb of automatic updates, I see vertical and horizontal scroll bars that are part of virtual box and the ubuntu resolution will not stretch across my screen anymore. What I want is a ubuntu resolution that will stretch to fit the maximized window of virtual box, and remove the scroll bars. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate it.

• In Windows 7, why won't my display stay off despite the power settings saying it should?

  I'm completely stumped by this. My simple use case is that when I'm in bed, I use a cordless mouse to browse the web, watch videos, etc. - the monitor is across the room. When I'm going to sleep, I want to shut the monitor off. I also want to be able to turn it back on in the morning. I just want to turn the monitor off and on using only the mouse. I thought of creating a power setting that turned the monitor off asap (the shortest amount of time is one minute; that's fine). I have one that does this. It worked great for almost a year on my old XP machine, and for about four months on my new Windows 7 laptop (which I essentially use as a desktop). All of a sudden a couple weeks ago, it just stopped working - my monitor won't turn off on its own anymore. Here are the settings: I tried other options. Based on the advice here I tried nircmd. This seemed great. I created a shortcut with the command line: "C:\Program Files\nircmd\nircmd.exe" cmdwait 1000 monitor off I click this, and in one second the monitor goes off. However about five seconds later it turns back on, and I've been extra careful to make sure the mouse isn't moving. I have no idea what's going on. Based on both of these things, my only guess is that something could be running in the background which somehow makes the computer think it's in use. I've tried killing as many programs as possible but I still get the same behavior. Any advice? I'm mainly curious about how to debug, but am open to other suggestions about turning the monitor off and on with just the mouse as well.

  Does anyone know about a webcam photo application (ie an alternative to photo booth) with would allow to change the settings on the camera, such as : Select camera (I.e I want to use an external webcam) Change camera resolution (with photobooth change camera settings (I.e autofocus, aperture, color balance, etc..) I did a lot of research on the internet with no success. I am looking for a very simple app (such as wmcap.exe on Windows) What I tried so far: photo booth: it works with an external camera, however there is no way to change the resolution, or the color/focus settings manycam : a virtual webcam driver. you can add special effects to your camera and transfer those effects to any app, but not change your camera settings... iGlasses : enables you to change the camera settings inside photo booth and other apps. However you cannot control the focus, nor the video resolution macam (did not work on my Mac book Pro) Does anyone know better than me? Note : my only solution now is to launch a virtual machine (with parallels desktop) and take the pictures from there!

• Win 8 start screen resolution

  My screen resolution is 1280x1024 running Win 8 RP I formatted my computer and reinstalled Win 8 CP because I had too many BSODs. When I installed Win 8 CP and created a local account. I had 5(or 6) tiles per column. But once I switched to the Microsoft account to get my synced wallpaper and lock-screen, the Start screen resolution changed and I got a max 3 tiles per column. The size of all metro apps including the Settings app changed and became awkwardly bigger. Is there a way to get back 5 tiles per column? Essentially changing the resolution of the start screen?

• How to get monitor resolution of 1680x1050 using ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO in a dual monitor setup

  I have Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics card in my Windows Server 2008 x64 machine. It has two outputs a VGA and a DVI. I have connected the DVI to my Dell 24" monitor with 1900x1200 resolution and it works 100%. The VGA I have connected to my second monitor a Samsung 22" with native resolution of 1680x1050. But the ATI driver and Catalyst control centre doesn't show this resolution as an option. If I choose a lower resolution like 1280x1024 it looks really bad and fuzzy. I searched in google and downloaded the powerstrip tool that allowed me to create a custom resolution of 1680x1050 and then this option shows up in Catalyst control centre and my 2nd monitor works fine now. But I don't want to pay for an application to choose a display resolution. Why doesn't ATI show me that option by default even though it has no problem in actually supporting the display at resolution. Is there a way to get 1680x1050 resolution using ATI drivers only ?

• Issues with new graphics card and drivers

  With my onboard graphics card (Intel HD 4000) I was able to use 1680x1050 screen resolution. Using the same screen and an Asus ENGTS250 graphics card with 296.10 drivers installed, I'm not able to use that resolution anymore. Also, I've been having other trouble with driver installations. Using 340.52 or 337.88, I can't boot into Windows 7. I see the Windows Welcome screen and then the screen goes black, loses signal and the computer locks up. I think the drivers issues and the resolution problems go hand-in-hand. I have a feeling I could use a newer driver than 296.10 which would give me access to use the 1680x1050 resolution I want to use, but I'm terrified that if I update or install another driver, that the computer will lock up again. Can anyone recommend a [better] driver for me to use?

• How can fix HDMI HDTV overscan when I my TV has no aspect ratio setting?

  I have a 32" Vizio HDTV. It's a few years old, but running well. I just connected a new nettop to it using HDMI out. It's the Intel 3x00 graphics chipset. I'm seeing overscan, where the resolution in Ubuntu is set to 1280x720, but the TV itself is 1366x768. When I go into the Monitors control applet, I cannot change the resolution to anything other than the current or 640x480. A user had a similar overscan problem, but fixed the overscan by adjusting his TV's aspect ratio settings. I do not have that luxury. Is there a way I can do this without having to delve into xorg.conf or other command-line craziness? I'm more than comfortable doing so, but there must be a cleaner way. I'm running Ubuntu Natty, keeping up with updates and such. • How to resolve concurrent ramp collisions in 2d platformer?

  A bit about the physics engine: Bodies are all rectangles. Bodies are sorted at the beginning of every update loop based on the body-in-motion's horizontal and vertical velocity (to avoid sticky walls/floors). Solid bodies are resolved by testing the body-in-motion's new X with the old Y and adjusting if necessary before testing the new X with the new Y, again adjusting if necessary. Works great. Ramps (rectangles with a flag set indicating bottom-left, bottom-right, etc) are resolved by calculating the ratio of penetration along the x-axis and setting a new Y accordingly (with some checks to make sure the body-in-motion isn't attacking from the tall or flat side, in which case the ramp is treated as a normal rectangle). This also works great. Side-by-side ramps, eg. \/ and /\, work fine but things get jittery and unpredictable when a top-down ramp is directly above a bottom-up ramp, eg. < or > or when a bottom-up ramp runs right up to the ceiling/top-down ramp runs right down to the floor. I've been able to lock it down somewhat by detecting whether the body-in-motion hadFloor when also colliding with a top-down ramp or hadCeiling when also colliding with a bottom-up ramp then resolving by calculating the ratio of penetration along the y-axis and setting the new X accordingly (the opposite of the normal behavior). But as soon as the body-in-motion jumps the hasFloor flag becomes false, the first ramp resolution pushes the body into collision with the second ramp and collision resolution becomes jittery again for a few frames. I'm sure I'm making this more complicated than it needs to be. Can anyone recommend a good resource that outlines the best way to address this problem? (Please don't recommend I use something like Box2d or Chipmunk. Also, "redesign your levels" isn't an answer; the body-in-motion may at times be riding another body-in-motion, eg. a platform, that pushes it into a ramp so I'd like to be able to resolve this properly.) • Nvidia driver overscan issue second monitor via dvi-d cable

  Ok, I know that I have a bit of a bizarre setup, but here goes. I have an old laptop, HP Pavilion 6000. The graphics card in there is a GeForce 7150M. The monitor connection is an old 18pin. The external monitor I use is a Samsung SyncMaster 2333. Don't ask me why, but this monitor only has a dvi-d connection (yes, i have searched it). So I have the monitor plugged into the laptop. If I use any of the Nvidia propriety drivers and try to set the resolution up to 1920x1080 (the monitor's native resolution), I get a massive overscan issue. Over the years I have tried to get this to work, tinkering with my xorg.conf to death. I have also tried this on every Ubuntu since 10.04, on all the corresponding LUbuntus, and on all the Linux Mints since Lisa. Exact same issue. I have even tried it in WinDoze and it works perfectly there (although I did get the error once, but was unable to reproduce it). Using the Open Source drivers it works perfectly iff I switch off the laptop monitor (this makes no difference with the Nvidia drivers). I would have happily gone on using the Open Source drivers, except that since upgrading to LUbuntu 12.10, the Open Source drivers make my monitor completely hazy and have the same overscan issue until I (through the haze, only because I know where things are) go to the monitor settings, activate the laptop's monitor, then deactivate it, and suddenly it comes right. I have to do this every time. So I have to find a way to fix one of them, so I may as well tackle the propriety drivers, hence this overlong question. Amidst other things, I have tried the nvidia-settings, but because it is connected to an 18pin, it detects the monitor as a vga monitor and does not give me overscan correction options. I have tried custom modlines (although there are always more of those try), I have tried using xrandr, and I have tried all the FlatPanelOptions. What I have not tried is a Gentoo build, as I don't have time any more to do that installation, but up to about three years ago when I ran Gentoo exclusively I did not have this issue. Below is an link to an image with a red highlight around the portion of the screen visible to me, the numbers around it are the number of pixels which are cut off. • Desktop is too big for my screen

  I have an acer widescreen monitor set at 1024x768 running Ubuntu 12.04.4 precise, I have adjusted the resolution to match in display settings however the ubuntu side bar and files are all enlarged. its like it has zoomed in. I have read through all other related posts and cannot come up with a fix. The desktop was fine up until 3 days ago then it changed and I have no idea why, can someone help? Thanks

The Tempescope pulls down the current weather report from Weather Underground’s API and feeds it to an Arduino board which in turn controls the device. • Is it possible to have my desktop loaded before login?

  I am connecting to the system with Putty (this is Windows SSH client) then running some service in interactive personal mode. For example this is a script to run freeswitch: dims@nebulla:~$ cat freeswitch.sh #!/bin/sh cd ~/bin/freeswitch/bin gnome-terminal -e ./freeswitch & I.e. it is installed in user directory. Also DISPLAY is set to :0 The problem is that I can't use this script until login once. Script responds with dims@nebulla:~$ ./freeswitch.sh dims@nebulla:~$ No protocol specified Failed to parse arguments: Cannot open display: After login, I can do "Switch user" and see login screen but script will be able to run since desktop exists. My question is: is it possible to "preload" my desktop, so that initial situation was as if I loogged in and the went to switch user?

• Why does Ubuntu 10.10 show blank screen during startup?

  When I try to login to Ubuntu 10.10 I get a flickering screen for a second showing - Ubuntu 10.10 ............. and then I get a blank purple coloured screen[Ubuntu's theme colour] which doesn't progress any further Can anybody suggest a remedy to this problem? From whatever questions I searched in various Ubuntu Forums it seems like this problem is likely caused by a missing NVIDIA Display Driver[which is being used in my Sony Vaio Laptop] update in Ubuntu releases If that's the case then how can I update my NVIDIA Display Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 without being able to log into the Ubuntu 10.10?

• Using Toshiba 22EL833 as PC display through HDMI input

  I had another Toshiba TV - 19SL738 - connected to this same PC and video card (GTX 8800) through DVI<-HDMI (DVI on PC side, HDMI on TV) before, that was working perfectly at it's native resolution 1360x768. Some time ago I had to change to 22EL833 and immediately faced problem with Windows 7 control panel and NVIDIA control panel both reporting native resolution for new TV as 1080i, 1920x1280, despite TV documentation saying that it have same 1360x768 as previous one. Practical tests confirmed that true native resolution is indeed 1360x768, because plugging in through DVI<-VGA and setting custom resolution through NVIDIA panel shown clear colors and crisp image, while setting anything different with either DVI<-VGA or DVI<-HDMI produced horribly distorted or squished images, with almost unreadable slim lines (as in letters, for example). Now, my problem is that there's no drivers for this TV and I'm unable to get good image while connecting it through DVI<-HDMI directly. The best I've achieved is editing EDID/driver manually, to persuade system that native resolution should be 1360x768, and while image became mostly clear, colors turned to some strange washed out effect, with pools of pure yellow, cyan and magenta there and there filling place of other colors. Gradients also became noticeably stripped as well. Somehow it looks like dithering gone bad and makes me suspect that image is still down/upscaled several times internally somewhere along the line. How can I connect this TV to DVI output of my video card to get best possible clear image, correct colors and correct native resolution?

Practical tests confirmed that true native resolution is indeed 1360x768, because plugging in through DVI<-VGA and setting custom resolution through NVIDIA panel shown clear colors and crisp image, while setting anything different with either DVI<-VGA or DVI<-HDMI produced horribly distorted or squished images, with almost unreadable slim lines (as in letters, for example). Now, my problem is that there's no drivers for this TV and I'm unable to get good image while connecting it through DVI<-HDMI directly. The best I've achieved is editing EDID/driver manually, to persuade system that native resolution should be 1360x768, and while image became mostly clear, colors turned to some strange washed out effect, with pools of pure yellow, cyan and magenta there and there filling place of other colors. Gradients also became noticeably stripped as well. Somehow it looks like dithering gone bad and makes me suspect that image is still down/upscaled several times internally somewhere along the line. How can I connect this TV to DVI output of my video card to get best possible clear image, correct colors and correct native resolution?
