(Wikipedia) Normally, when you read "getting started" instructions for Twitter Bootstrap, you're told to download various things from various sites. Then you're told to set up various folders and files, etc. What if it could be much simpler than that? • Are there any adverse side effects to loading html5shiv in every browser?

  On the html5shiv Google Code page the example usage includes an IE conditional: <!--[if lt IE 9]> <script src="dist/html5shiv.js"></script> <![endif]--> However on the html5shiv github page, the description explains: This script is the defacto way to enable use of HTML5 sectioning elements in legacy Internet Explorer, as well as default HTML5 styling in Internet Explorer 6 - 9, Safari 4.x (and iPhone 3.x), and Firefox 3.x. An obvious contradiction. So to satisfy my curiosity, for anyone who has studied the code, are there any adverse side affects to loading html5shiv in every browser (without the IE conditional)? EDIT: My goal, obviously, is to use the shiv without the IE conditional.

• What tools exist for designing layouts and pre-production templates for Rails 3 applications?

  I develop Rails 3 applications, but prior to this, my background was a designer (typically making mockups in Photoshop and then breaking them down to HTML5/CSS3). Now, some great tools/templates exist for getting working layouts ready for Rails and other apps quickly, e.g., http://railsapps.github.com/rails-composer/. Many are using CSS Frameworks such as Twitter Bootstrap. I'd like to know whether there is a local app (for Mac) that can design layouts, much the way Dreamweaver would, but that are geared towards being utilized in a Twitter Bootstrap situation alongside Ruby (Rails) or Python apps, etc.

• Launcher disappears when Focuswriter is minimized

  This bug has to do with the integration of the full-screen writing app Focuswriter within Unity. It appeared before I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 - probably caused by a an automatically upgraded change that persist in 12.10: When I minimize Focuswriter after it has been in full-screen mode the launcher is invisible - instead of seeing it I just see a rectangle the color of my desktop background where it should have been. The launcher becomes visible if I click the area once but then I'm likely to hit an icon and unwillingly open a program. I've reported the bug to the developer of the program here: https://github.com/gottcode/focuswriter/issues/101 He has labeled the bug "upstream" saying that the bug is can only be fixed in Unity. My questions are: 1) does anyone (perhaps experiencing problems with other full-screen programs) have a solution or workaround so the launcher won't disappear? 2) where can I file a bug report for this problem?

• Options for secure git -repo hosting?

  I need a secure git -repo host, either by third-party or by myself. I am not sure how so outlining some ideas. Please, answer how you manage git -repos securely -- do you use some service or do you use only your 'legs' -approach? Afaik Bitbucket.org and Github.com are missing Gmail -style second-verification. Now I need this kind of login-system with password and mobile-phone to access the administration things in the git -hosting or ability to disable this kind of access without private -key. • Crafting an effective php/web programmer job post template [closed]

  I am looking to create a job post to get a satisfactory assistant programmer / templater. Specifically, a php & web programmer. I am, however, afraid of forgetting important things. So, are there resources you can suggest for templates for things to ask and things to tell in a job post for a programmer? Surprisingly, I wasn't able to find similar questions on this site, so there may be duplicate questions out there that I could use but just didn't find. Right now I know that my -requirements- are so generic that they're going to get me in trouble with a spam of applications. e.g. the candidate must know php, must be able to seperate php from html. So I'm looking for criteria that are must-haves, must-mentions, or a general template to try to avoid a "lemon". • Why does the Git community seem to ignore side-by-side diffs

  I used to use Windows, SVN, Tortoise SVN, and Beyond Compare. It was a great combination for doing code reviews. Now I use OSX and Git. I've managed to kludge together a bash script along with Gitx and DiffMerge to come up with a barely acceptable solution. I've muddled along with this setup, and similar ones, for over a year. I've also tried using the Github diff viewer and the Gitx diff viewer, so it's not like I've not given them a chance. There are so many smart people doing great stuff with Git. Why not the side-by-side diff with the option of seeing the entire file? With people who have used both, I've never heard of anyone that likes the single +/- view better, at least for more than a quick check.

• Should I change the name in the WTFPL?

  I'm using the WTFPL in my personal projects published on GitHub. Currently I'm using it verbatim, but I have the suspicion I shouldn't be leaving Copyright (C) 2004 Sam Hocevar <[email protected]> in there, and instead should use my name. But the license is very confusing about this. Half of the WTFPL is about the WTFPL itself, so I thought that copyright might refer to a copyright on the license text itself, and not on the project this is licensing. Also, it says Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim or modified copies of this license document, and changing it is allowed as long as the name is changed. So would I have to change the name, from WTFPL to, say, "WTFPL-Domenic"?

• What source control to use for my private gaming server?h

  It has sql server components, client launcher, server software. I want to use an online resource where people can make updates, and make it easier to roll out any changes to players. Most of the files are just text files, or gtx image files. I don't think this qualifies as open source, so I don't know what to do. I tried github, and have a free account there, but it was really clunky, mass adding every file to be comitted. I really dont' like subversion but if that's the best option, i'll use it. The other people who will need access to the files will have no familiarity with any kind of source control, so I need an easy system for them to download files, make changes, and comit to the repository. Any suggestions?

• Petstore using Java EE 6 ? Almost!

The complete end-to-end sample application will build a eCommerce website and follows the Java EE 6 design principles of simple and easy-to-use to its core. Its using several technologies from the platform such as JPA 2.0, CDI 1.0, Bean Validation 1.0, EJB Lite 3.1, JSF 2.0, and JAX-RS 1.1. The two goals of the project are: • use Java EE 6 and just Java EE 6 : no external framework or dependency • make it simple : no complex business algorithm The application works with GlassFish and JBoss today and there are plans to add support for TomEE. • Where to contribute a Mozilla Persona example?

  I found out about Mozilla Persona today and fell in love with it completely. It really does feel like the future of account management. For the first time ever, I actually want to contribute to open source because I believe in this tech. I wrote a simple ASP.Net MVC3 demo web application showing how to login and logout users using Persona. I want devs in my language ecosystem to have a simple time learning about this by reading example code. Too much wishful thinking?

• New Dash features and Online accounts missing after 12.04 to 12.10 upgrade

  I performed upgrade to 12.10 from 12.04 using update-manager. Unfortunately, there was some error, because when I came back from the coffee, the screen was black. I opened a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and killall dpkg, which seemed to be waiting for user input for configuration file update (xdg package , if I remember well). After that, I did a do-release-upgrade, which seemed to work well, because I ended on a graphic session after reboot. The problem is that some 12.10 features are missing, as Online Accounts and Dash new online results. This made me suspicious of missing packages or something like that. Please take a look at upgrade logs and my new dpkg --get-selections output: https://gist.github.com/3919006 dpkg --reconfigure -a didn't solved the problem nor apt-get -f install showed any problem. do-release-upgrade say my system need no news packages (even if I change /etc/lsb-release to 12.04) If someone give me a dpkg --get-selections of a vanilla 12.10 installation, may be I can force system reconfiguration.

  My secondary education was primarily focused on the sciences (Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics), but now I work primarily as a software developer. I feel like my resume is totally inappropriate for my current career goals. Listing laboratory skills and accomplishments is not the same as listing software development skills and accomplishments. Oddly enough, I can't seem to find any resources for writing a engineer's resume online that aren't older than 5 years. GitHub and StackExchange profiles seem like as important resume items as anything, yet I don't know how to list them on a resume, or whether they are appropriate at all. So what is a modern software engineer's resume supposed to look like?

• How to go about "taking over" an open-source project?

  There's an open-source project that I'm interested in and use regularly. It's licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and it has basically no activity any more. It's hosted on Google Code and I'm interested in continuing it's development. I'm new to the open-source process and I'm trying to figure out the appropriate way to go about this. Can I just check it out and push it to github so I can continue it's development in the open there? Should I contact the project "owner" first? Also, do I leave all the author information at the top of the classes, etc even though I'm going to be making changes..(I'm assuming the answer is yes)? Also, how do I practically adhere to the license requirement of "all modifications are clearly marked as being the work of the modifier"? Do I place a comment by every change I make?

• Installing RVM on 11.10

  I have been trying to get RVM properly installed on my system for 10 hours. The problem is, that when ever I run the command to download the install script I get this: edu@edu-VirtualBox:~$ bash -s stable < <(curl -s https://raw.github.com/wayneeseguin/rvm/master/binscripts/rvm-installer) mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/share/ruby-rvm': Permission denied If I run the command with sudo, I can get it installed, but then that leads to a whole host of other issues. Every tutorial I read says that you should not be installing rvm with sudo for a single user install. Why can I seem to get it installed without running sudo?

• Using NPM to share resources between UI projects [on hold]

  I am a UI team leader. My team has a lot of projects using different languages/technologies. In some parts we will rewrite (gradually - @Ampt this is for you) the application in order to enable new fresh technologies in and get old dinosaurs out. I am going to use Node Package Manager to set up an "all powerful" build/dependency manager. Can I use NPM to depend on a private github repository? Can I use NPM to depend on SVN? Will NPM play nice with quickbuild? Since each project might have a slightly different structure (think jetty/maven or play!framework) can I configure NPM to install some dependencies in different folders while still running it from the project's root? How can I, using NPM, get development resources out and build a packaged product? (like a war) Yes/No - is there a reason to use grunt? No discussion, just one liners.
