• Exam 70-480 Study Material: Programming in HTML5 with JavaScript and CSS3

    - by Stacy Vicknair
Here’s a list of sources of information for the different elements that comprise the 70-480 exam: General Resources http://www.w3schools.com (As pointed out in David Pallmann’s blog some of this content is unverified, but it is a decent source of information. For more about when it isn’t decent, see http://www.w3fools.com ) http://www.bloggedbychris.com/2012/09/19/microsoft-exam-70-480-study-guide/ (A guy who did a lot of what I did already, sadly I found this halfway through finishing my resources list. This list is expertly put together so I would recommend checking it out.) http://davidpallmann.blogspot.com/2012/08/microsoft-certification-exam-70-480.html http://pluralsight.com/training/Courses (Yes, this isn’t free, but if you look at the course listing there is an entire section on HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript. You can always try the trial!) Some of the links I put below will overlap with the other resources above, but I tried to find explanations that looked beneficial to me on links outside those already mentioned. Test Breakdown Implement and Manipulate Document Structures and Objects (24%) Create the document structure. o This objective may include but is not limited to: structure the UI by using semantic markup, including for search engines and screen readers (Section, Article, Nav, Header, Footer, and Aside); • Calculate travel time on road map with semaphores

    - by Ivansek
    I have a road map with intersections. At intersections there are semaphores. For each semaphore I generate a red light time and green light time which are represented with syntax [R:T1, G:T2], for example: 119 185 250 A ------- B: [R:6, G:4] ------ C: [R:5, G:5] ------ D I want to calculate a car travel time from A - D. Now I do this with this pseudo code: function get_travel_time(semaphores_configuration) { time = 0; for( i=1; i<path.length;i++) { prev_node = path[i-1]; next_node = path[i]); cost = cost_between(prev_node, next_node) time += (cost/movement_speed) // movement_speed = 50px per second light_times = get_light_times(path[i], semaphore_configurations) lights_cycle = get_lights_cycle(light_times) // Eg: [R,R,R,G,G,G,G], where [R:3, G:4] lights_sum = light_times.green_time+light_times.red_light; // Lights cycle time light = lights_cycle[cost%lights_sum]; if( light == "R" ) { time += light_times.red_light; } } return time; } So for distance 119 between A and B travel time is, 119/50 = 2.38s ( exactly mesaured time is between 2.5s and 2.6s), then we add time if we came at a red light when at B. If we came at a red light is calculated with lines: lights_cycle = get_lights_cycle(light_times) // Eg: [R,R,R,G,G,G,G], where [R:3, G:4] lights_sum = light_times.green_time+light_times.red_light light = lights_cycle[cost%lights_sum]; if( light == "R" ) { time += light_times.red_light; } This pseudo code doesn't calculate exactly the same times as they are mesaured, but the calculations are very close to them. Any idea how I would calculate this?

  • Using visitor pattern with large object hierarchy

    - by T. Fabre
Context I've been using with a hierarchy of objects (an expression tree) a "pseudo" visitor pattern (pseudo, as in it does not use double dispatch) : public interface MyInterface { void Accept(SomeClass operationClass); } public class MyImpl : MyInterface { public void Accept(SomeClass operationClass) { operationClass.DoSomething(); operationClass.DoSomethingElse(); // ... and so on ... } } This design was, however questionnable, pretty comfortable since the number of implementations of MyInterface is significant (~50 or more) and I didn't need to add extra operations. Each implementation is unique (it's a different expression or operator), and some are composites (ie, operator nodes that will contain other operator/leaf nodes). Traversal is currently performed by calling the Accept operation on the root node of the tree, which in turns calls Accept on each of its child nodes, which in turn... and so on... But the time has come where I need to add a new operation, such as pretty printing : public class MyImpl : MyInterface { // Property does not come from MyInterface public string SomeProperty { get; set; } public void Accept(SomeClass operationClass) { operationClass.DoSomething(); operationClass.DoSomethingElse(); // ... and so on ... } public void Accept(SomePrettyPrinter printer) { printer.PrettyPrint(this.SomeProperty); } } I basically see two options : Keep the same design, adding a new method for my operation to each derived class, at the expense of maintainibility (not an option, IMHO) Use the "true" Visitor pattern, at the expense of extensibility (not an option, as I expect to have more implementations coming along the way...), with about 50+ overloads of the Visit method, each one matching a specific implementation ? Question Would you recommand using the Visitor pattern ? Is there any other pattern that could help solve this issue ?

  • Particle trajectory smoothing: where to do the simulation?

    - by nkint
I have a particle system in which I have particles that are moving to a target and the new targets are received via network. The list of new target are some noisy coordinates of a moving target stored in the server that I want to smooth in the client. For doing the smoothing and the particle I wrote a simple particle engine with standard euler integration model. So, my pseudo code is something like that: # pseudo code class Particle: def update(): # do euler motion model integration: # if the distance to the target is more than a limit # add a new force to the accelleration # seeking the target, # and add the accelleration to velocity # and velocity to the position positionHistory.push_back(position); if history.length > historySize : history.pop_front() class ParticleEngine: particleById = dict() # an associative array # where the keys are the id # and particle istances are sotred as values # this method is called each time a new tcp packet is received and parsed def setNetTarget(int id, Vec2D new_target): particleById[id].setNewTarget(new_target) # this method is called each new frame def draw(): for p in particleById.values: p.update() beginVertex(LINE_STRIP) for v in p.positionHistory: vertex(v.x, v.y) endVertex() The new target that are arriving are noisy but setting some accelleration/velocity parameters let the particle to have a smoothed trajectories. But if a particle trajectory is a circle after a while the particle position converge to the center (a normal behaviour of euler integration model). So I decided to change the simulation and use some other interpolation (spline?) or smooth method (kalman filter?) between the targets. Something like: switch( INTERPOLATION_MODEL ): case EULER_MOTION: ... case HERMITE_INTERPOLATION: ... case SPLINE_INTERPOLATION: ... case KALMAN_FILTER_SMOOTHING: ... Now my question: where to write the motion simulation / trajectory interpolation? In the Particle? So I will have some Particle subclass like ParticleEuler, ParticleSpline, ParticleKalman, etc..? Or in the particle engine?

  • Seperation of drawing and logic in games

    - by BFree
I'm a developer that's just now starting to mess around with game development. I'm a .Net guy, so I've messed with XNA and am now playing around with Cocos2d for the iPhone. My question really is more general though. Let's say I'm building a simple Pong game. I'd have a Ball class and a Paddle class. Coming from the business world development, my first instinct is to not have any drawing or input handling code in either of these classes. //pseudo code class Ball { Vector2D position; Vector2D velocity; Color color; void Move(){} } Nothing in the ball class handles input, or deals with drawing. I'd then have another class, my Game class, or my Scene.m (in Cocos2D) which would new up the Ball, and during the game loop, it would manipulate the ball as needed. The thing is though, in many tutorials for both XNA and Cocos2D, I see a pattern like this: //pseudo code class Ball : SomeUpdatableComponent { Vector2D position; Vector2D velocity; Color color; void Update(){} void Draw(){} void HandleInput(){} } My question is, is this right? Is this the pattern that people use in game development? It somehow goes against everything I'm used to, to have my Ball class do everything. Furthermore, in this second example, where my Ball knows how to move around, how would I handle collision detection with the Paddle? Would the Ball need to have knowledge of the Paddle? In my first example, the Game class would have references to both the Ball and the Paddle, and then ship both of those off to some CollisionDetection manager or something, but how do I deal with the complexity of various components, if each individual component does everything themselves? (I hope I'm making sense.....)

  • Split up a screen into regions

    - by nexen
My task: I want to split up a screen into 3 regions for buffs-bar (with picked items), score-info and a game-map. It doesn't matter are regions intersect with each other or not. For example: I have a screen with width=1; height=1 and the origin of coordinates (0;0) is the left bottom point. I have 3 functions: draw items, draw info, draw map. If I use it without any matrix transformations, it draws fullscreen, because it's vertex coordinates are from 0;0 to 1;1. (pseudo-code) drawItems(); drawInfo(); drawMap(); And after that I see only map onto info onto items. My goal: I have some matrixes for transformation vertexes with 0;0-1;1 coordinates to strict regions. There is only one thing, what I need to do - set matrix before drawing. So my call of drawItems-function is like: (pseudo-code) adjustViewMatrixes_andSomethingElse(items.position_of_the_region_there_it_should_be_drawn, items.sizes_of_region_to_draw); setItemsMatrix(); drawItems(); //the same function with vertex coordinates 0;0->1;1, //but it draws in other coordinates, //because I have just set the matrix for region I know only some people will understand me, so there is a picture with regions which I need to make. Every region has 0;0 - 1;1 inner coordinates.

  • Problems extracting information from RSS feed description field

    - by Graeme
Hi, I've built an iPhone application using the parsing code from the TopSongs sample iPhone application. I've hit a problem though - the feed I'm trying to parse data from doesn't have a separate field for every piece of information (i.e. if it was for a feed about dogs, all the information such as dog type, dog age and dog price is contained in the feed. However, the TopSongs app relies on information having its own tags, so instead of using it uses and . So my question is this. How do I extract this information from the description field so that it can be parsed using the TopSongs parser? Can you somehow extract the dog age, price and type information using Yahoo Pipes and use that RSS feed for the feed? Or is there code that I can add to do it in application? Update: To view the code of my application parser (based on the TopSongs Core Data Apple provided application, see below. Here's a sample of one item from the the actual RSS feed I'm using (the description is longer, and has status, size, and a couple of other fields, but they're all formatted the same.:

MOE, MARGRET STREET

District/Region: REGION 09
Location: MOE
Name: MARGRET STREET

/* File: iTunesRSSImporter.m Abstract: Downloads, parses, and imports the iTunes top songs RSS feed into Core Data. • Crash when trying to get NSManagedObject from NSFetchedResultsController after 25 objects?

    - by Jeremy
Hey everyone, I'm relatively new to Core Data on iOS, but I think I've been getting better with it. I've been experiencing a bizarre crash, however, in one of my applications and have not been able to figure it out. I have approximately 40 objects in Core Data, presented in a UITableView. When tapping on a cell, a UIActionSheet appears, presenting the user with a UIActionSheet with options related to the cell that was selected. So that I can reference the selected object, I declare an NSIndexPath in my header called "lastSelection" and do the following when the UIActionSheet is presented: // Each cell has a tag based on its row number (i.e. first row has tag 0) lastSelection = [NSIndexPath indexPathForRow:[sender tag] inSection:0]; NSManagedObject *managedObject = [self.fetchedResultsController objectAtIndexPath:lastSelection]; BOOL onDuty = [[managedObject valueForKey:@"onDuty"] boolValue]; UIActionSheet *actionSheet = [[UIActionSheet alloc] initWithTitle:@"Status" delegate:self cancelButtonTitle:nil destructiveButtonTitle:nil otherButtonTitles:nil]; if(onDuty) { [actionSheet addButtonWithTitle:@"Off Duty"]; } else { [actionSheet addButtonWithTitle:@"On Duty"]; } actionSheet.actionSheetStyle = UIActionSheetStyleBlackOpaque; // Override the typical UIActionSheet behavior by presenting it overlapping the sender's frame. This makes it more clear which cell is selected. CGRect senderFrame = [sender frame]; CGPoint point = CGPointMake(senderFrame.origin.x + (senderFrame.size.width / 2), senderFrame.origin.y + (senderFrame.size.height / 2)); CGRect popoverRect = CGRectMake(point.x, point.y, 1, 1); [actionSheet showFromRect:popoverRect inView:[sender superview] animated:NO]; [actionSheet release]; When the UIActionSheet is dismissed with a button, the following code is called: - (void)actionSheet:(UIActionSheet *)actionSheet willDismissWithButtonIndex:(NSInteger)buttonIndex { // Set status based on UIActionSheet button pressed if(buttonIndex == -1) { return; } NSManagedObject *managedObject = [self.fetchedResultsController objectAtIndexPath:lastSelection]; if([actionSheet.title isEqualToString:@"Status"]) { if([[actionSheet buttonTitleAtIndex:buttonIndex] isEqualToString:@"On Duty"]) { [managedObject setValue:[NSNumber numberWithBool:YES] forKey:@"onDuty"]; [managedObject setValue:@"onDuty" forKey:@"status"]; } else { [managedObject setValue:[NSNumber numberWithBool:NO] forKey:@"onDuty"]; [managedObject setValue:@"offDuty" forKey:@"status"]; } } NSError *error; [self.managedObjectContext save:&error]; [tableView reloadData]; } This might not be the most efficient code (sorry, I'm new!), but it does work. That is, for the first 25 items in the list. Selecting the 26th item or beyond, the UIActionSheet will appear, but if it is dismissed with a button, I get a variety of errors, including any one of the following: [__NSCFArray section]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x4c6bf90 Program received signal: “EXC_BAD_ACCESS” [_NSObjectID_48_0 section]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x4c54710 [__NSArrayM section]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x4c619a0 [NSComparisonPredicate section]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x6088790 [NSKeyPathExpression section]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x4c18950 If I comment out NSManagedObject *managedObject = [self.fetchedResultsController objectAtIndexPath:lastSelection]; it doesn't crash anymore, so I believe it has something do do with that. Can anyone offer any insight? Please let me know if I need to include any other information. Thanks! EDIT: Interestingly, my fetchedResultsController code returns a different object every time. Is this expected, or could this be a cause of my issue? The code looks like this: - (NSFetchedResultsController *)fetchedResultsController { /* Set up the fetched results controller. */ // Create the fetch request for the entity. NSFetchRequest *fetchRequest = [[NSFetchRequest alloc] init]; // Edit the entity name as appropriate. NSEntityDescription *entity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"Employee" inManagedObjectContext:self.managedObjectContext]; [fetchRequest setEntity:entity]; // Set the batch size to a suitable number. [fetchRequest setFetchBatchSize:80]; // Edit the sort key as appropriate. NSString *sortKey; BOOL ascending; if(sortControl.selectedSegmentIndex == 0) { sortKey = @"startTime"; ascending = YES; } else if(sortControl.selectedSegmentIndex == 1) { sortKey = @"name"; ascending = YES; } else { sortKey = @"onDuty"; ascending = NO; } NSSortDescriptor *sortDescriptor = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:sortKey ascending:ascending]; NSArray *sortDescriptors = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:sortDescriptor, nil]; [fetchRequest setSortDescriptors:sortDescriptors]; // Edit the section name key path and cache name if appropriate. NSFetchedResultsController *aFetchedResultsController = [[NSFetchedResultsController alloc] initWithFetchRequest:fetchRequest managedObjectContext:self.managedObjectContext sectionNameKeyPath:nil cacheName:@"Root"]; aFetchedResultsController.delegate = self; self.fetchedResultsController = aFetchedResultsController; [aFetchedResultsController release]; [fetchRequest release]; [sortDescriptor release]; [sortDescriptors release]; NSError *error = nil; if (![fetchedResultsController_ performFetch:&error]) { /* Replace this implementation with code to handle the error appropriately. abort() causes the application to generate a crash log and terminate. You should not use this function in a shipping application, although it may be useful during development. If it is not possible to recover from the error, display an alert panel that instructs the user to quit the application by pressing the Home button. */ //NSLog(@"Unresolved error %@, %@", error, [error userInfo]); abort(); } return fetchedResultsController_; } This happens when I set a breakpoint: (gdb) po [self fetchedResultsController] <NSFetchedResultsController: 0x61567c0> (gdb) po [self fetchedResultsController] <NSFetchedResultsController: 0x4c83630>

  • How to implement Cocoa copyWithZone on derived object in MonoMac C#?

    - by Justin Aquadro
I'm currently porting a small Winforms-based .NET application to use a native Mac front-end with MonoMac. The application has a TreeControl with icons and text, which does not exist out of the box in Cocoa. So far, I've ported almost all of the ImageAndTextCell code in Apple's DragNDrop example: https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#samplecode/DragNDropOutlineView/Listings/ImageAndTextCell_m.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/DTS40008831-ImageAndTextCell_m-DontLinkElementID_6, which is assigned to an NSOutlineView as a custom cell. It seems to be working almost perfectly, except that I have not figured out how to properly port the copyWithZone method. Unfortunately, this means the internal copies that NSOutlineView is making do not have the image field, and it leads to the images briefly vanishing during expand and collapse operations. The objective-c code in question is: - (id)copyWithZone:(NSZone *)zone { ImageAndTextCell *cell = (ImageAndTextCell *)[super copyWithZone:zone]; // The image ivar will be directly copied; we need to retain or copy it. cell->image = [image retain]; return cell; } The first line is what's tripping me up, as MonoMac does not expose a copyWithZone method, and I don't know how to otherwise call it. Update Based on current answers and additional research and testing, I've come up with a variety of models for copying an object. static List<ImageAndTextCell> _refPool = new List<ImageAndTextCell>(); // Method 1 static IntPtr selRetain = Selector.GetHandle ("retain"); [Export("copyWithZone:")] public virtual NSObject CopyWithZone(IntPtr zone) { ImageAndTextCell cell = new ImageAndTextCell() { Title = Title, Image = Image, }; Messaging.void_objc_msgSend (cell.Handle, selRetain); return cell; } // Method 2 [Export("copyWithZone:")] public virtual NSObject CopyWithZone(IntPtr zone) { ImageAndTextCell cell = new ImageAndTextCell() { Title = Title, Image = Image, }; _refPool.Add(cell); return cell; } [Export("dealloc")] public void Dealloc () { _refPool.Remove(this); this.Dispose(); } // Method 3 static IntPtr selRetain = Selector.GetHandle ("retain"); [Export("copyWithZone:")] public virtual NSObject CopyWithZone(IntPtr zone) { ImageAndTextCell cell = new ImageAndTextCell() { Title = Title, Image = Image, }; _refPool.Add(cell); Messaging.void_objc_msgSend (cell.Handle, selRetain); return cell; } // Method 4 static IntPtr selRetain = Selector.GetHandle ("retain"); static IntPtr selRetainCount = Selector.GetHandle("retainCount"); [Export("copyWithZone:")] public virtual NSObject CopyWithZone (IntPtr zone) { ImageAndTextCell cell = new ImageAndTextCell () { Title = Title, Image = Image, }; _refPool.Add (cell); Messaging.void_objc_msgSend (cell.Handle, selRetain); return cell; } public void PeriodicCleanup () { List<ImageAndTextCell> markedForDelete = new List<ImageAndTextCell> (); foreach (ImageAndTextCell cell in _refPool) { uint count = Messaging.UInt32_objc_msgSend (cell.Handle, selRetainCount); if (count == 1) markedForDelete.Add (cell); } foreach (ImageAndTextCell cell in markedForDelete) { _refPool.Remove (cell); cell.Dispose (); } } // Method 5 static IntPtr selCopyWithZone = Selector.GetHandle("copyWithZone:"); [Export("copyWithZone:")] public virtual NSObject CopyWithZone(IntPtr zone) { IntPtr copyHandle = Messaging.IntPtr_objc_msgSendSuper_IntPtr(SuperHandle, selCopyWithZone, zone); ImageAndTextCell cell = new ImageAndTextCell(copyHandle) { Image = Image, }; _refPool.Add(cell); return cell; } Method 1: Increases the retain count of the unmanaged object. The unmanaged object will persist persist forever (I think? dealloc never called), and the managed object will be harvested early. Seems to be lose-lose all-around, but runs in practice. Method 2: Saves a reference of the managed object. The unmanaged object is left alone, and dealloc appears to be invoked at a reasonable time by the caller. At this point the managed object is released and disposed. This seems reasonable, but on the downside the base type's dealloc won't be run (I think?) Method 3: Increases the retain count and saves a reference. Unmanaged and managed objects leak forever. Method 4: Extends Method 3 by adding a cleanup function that is run periodically (e.g. during Init of each new ImageAndTextCell object). The cleanup function checks the retain counts of the stored objects. A retain count of 1 means the caller has released it, so we should as well. Should eliminate leaking in theory. Method 5: Attempt to invoke the copyWithZone method on the base type, and then construct a new ImageAndTextView object with the resulting handle. Seems to do the right thing (the base data is cloned). Internally, NSObject bumps the retain count on objects constructed like this, so we also use the PeriodicCleanup function to release these objects when they're no longer used. Based on the above, I believe Method 5 is the best approach since it should be the only one that results in a truly correct copy of the base type data, but I don't know if the approach is inherently dangerous (I am also making some assumptions about the underlying implementation of NSObject). So far nothing bad has happened "yet", but if anyone is able to vet my analysis then I would be more confident going forward.

  • MPI Cluster Debugger launch integration in VS2010

Let's assume that you have all the HPC bits installed and that you have existing MPI code (or you created a "Hello World" project using the MPI project template). Of course, you create a single MPI application and at runtime it will correspond to multiple processes (of the same app) launched on multiple nodes (i.e. machines) on the cluster. So how do you debug such a situation by simply hitting the familiar "F5" keystroke (i.e. Debug - Start Debugging)?WATCH IT INSTEAD OF READING ABOUT ITIf you can't bear to read through all the details below, just watch this 19-minute screencast explaining this VS2010 feature. Alternatively, or even additionally, keep on reading.REQUIREMENTWhen you debug an MPI application, you would want the copying of resources from your client machine (where Visual Studio is installed) to each compute node (where Windows HPC Server is installed) to take place automatically for you. 'Resources' in the previous sentence includes your application binary, plus any binary or data dependencies it may have, plus PDBs if needed, plus the debug CRT of the correct bitness, plus msvsmon for remote debugging to work. You would also want, after copying is complete, to have your app and msvsmon launched and attached so that you can hit breakpoints back in Visual Studio on your client machine. All these thing that you would want are delivered in VS2010.STEPS TO F51. In your MPI project where you have placed a breakpoint go to Project Properties - Configuration Properties - Debugging. Ensure the "Debugger to launch" combo box value is set to MPI Cluster Debugger.2. There are a whole bunch of properties here and typically you can ignore all of them except one: Run Environment. By default it is set to run 1 process on your local machine and if you change the number after that to, for example, 4 it will launch 4 processes of your app on your local machine. You want this to run on your cluster though, so go to the dropdown arrow at the end of the Run Environment cell and open it to expose the "Edit Hpc node" menu which opens the Node Selector dialog:In this dialog you can enter (or pick from a list) the cluster head node name and then the number of processes you want to execute on the cluster and then hit OK and… you are done.3. Press F5 and watch your breakpoint get hit (after giving it some time for copying, remote execution, attachment and symbol resolution to take place).GOING DEEPERIn the MPI Cluster Debugger project properties above, you can see many additional properties to the Run Environment. They are all optional, but you may want to understand them in order to fine tune your cluster debugging. Read all about each one of these on the MSDN page Configuration Properties for the MPI Cluster Debugger. In the Node Selector dialog above you can see more options than just the Head Node name and Number of Process to run. They should be self-explanatory but I also cover them in depth in my screencast showing you an example of why you would choose to schedule processes per core versus per node. You can also read about these options on MSDN as part of the page How to: Configure and Launch the MPI Cluster Debugger. To read through an example that touches on MPI project creation, project properties, node selector, and also usage of MPI with OpenMP plus MPI with PPL, read the MSDN page Walkthrough: Launching the MPI Cluster Debugger in Visual Studio 2010.Happy MPI debugging! • jquery parseFloat assigning val to field

    - by user306472
I have a select box that gives a description of a product along with a price. Depending on what the user selects, I'd like to automatically grab that dollar amount from the option selected and assign it to a price input field. My HTML:

Item One $500 Item Two $400

So based on what is selected, I want either 500 or 400 assigned to the .class input. I tried this but I'm not quite sure where I'm going wrong: $('.selector').blur(function(){ var selectVal = ('.selector > option.val()'); var parsedPrice = parseFloat(selectVal.val()); $('.price').val(parsedPrice); });

  • Using JavaScript/jQuery to return a list of CSS selectors based on highlighted text

    - by Bungle
I've been given some project requirements that involve (ideally) returning a list of CSS selectors based on highlighted text. In other words, a user could do something like this on a page: Click a button to indicate that their next text selection should be recorded. Highlight some text on the page. See a generated list of CSS selectors that correspond to all the elements that contain the highlighted text. Firstly, does this seem like a feasible goal? jQuery makes it easy to use a selector to access a particular element, but I'm not sure if the reverse holds true. If an element lacks an id attribute, I also don't know how you'd return an "optimized" selector - i.e., one that identifies an element uniquely. Maybe crawl up the DOM until you find an ID, then stem the selector from there? Secondly, from a high-level perspective, any ideas on how to go about this? Any tips or tricks that could speed development? I very much appreciate any help. Thanks!

  • Running and managing NSTimer in different NSThread/NSRunLoop

    - by mips
I'm writing a Cocoa application, with a GUI designed in Interface Builder. I need to schedule background activity (at regular intervals) without blocking the UI, so I run it in a separate thread, like this: - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(NSNotification *)aNotification { [self performSelectorInBackground:@selector(schedule) withObject:nil]; } - (void) schedule { NSAutoreleasePool* pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; NSRunLoop* runLoop = [NSRunLoop currentRunLoop]; timer = [[NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:FEED_UPDATE_INTERVAL target:activityObj selector:@selector(run:) userInfo:nil repeats:YES] retain]; [runLoop run]; [pool release]; } I retain the timer, so I can easily invalidate and reschedule. Problem: I must also fire the run: method in response to GUI events, so it is synchronous (i.e. a "perform activity" button). Like this: [timer fire]; I could do this with performSelectorInBackground too, and of course it doesn't block the UI. But this synchronous firings run in another runloop! So I have no guarantee that they won't overlap. How can I queue all of my firings on the same runloop?

  • iPhone contacts app styled indexed table view implementation

    - by KSH
My Requirement: I have this straight forward requirement of listing names of people in alphabetical order in a Indexed table view with index titles being the starting letter of alphabets (additionally a search icon at the top and # to display misc values which start with a number and other special characters). What I have done so far: 1. I am using core data for storage and "last_name" is modelled as a String property in the Contacts entity 2.I am using a NSFetchedResultsController to display the sorted indexed table view. Issues accomplishing my requirement: 1. First up, I couldn't get the section index titles to be the first letter of alphabets. Dave's suggestion in the following post, helped me achieve the same: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1112521/nsfetchedresultscontroller-with-sections-created-by-first-letter-of-a-string The only issue I encountered with Dave' suggestion is that I couldn't get the misc named grouped under "#" index. What I have tried: 1. I tried adding a custom compare method to NSString (category) to check how the comparison and section is made but that custom method doesn't get called when specified in the NSSortDescriptor selector. Here is some code: `@interface NSString (SortString) -(NSComparisonResult) customCompare: (NSString*) aStirng; @end @implementation NSString (SortString) -(NSComparisonResult) customCompare:(NSString *)aString { NSLog(@"Custom compare called to compare : %@ and %@",self,aString); return [self caseInsensitiveCompare:aString]; } @end` Code to fetch data: `NSArray *sortDescriptors = [NSArray arrayWithObject:[[[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"last_name" ascending:YES selector:@selector(customCompare:)] autorelease]]; [fetchRequest setSortDescriptors:sortDescriptors]; fetchedResultsController = [[NSFetchedResultsController alloc] initWithFetchRequest:fetchRequest managedObjectContext:managedObjectContext sectionNameKeyPath:@"lastNameInitial" cacheName:@"MyCache"];` Can you let me know what I am missing and how the requirement can be accomplished ?

  • Why does ObservableCollection throws an exception when being modified?

Hi! My application uses a WPF DataGrid. One of the columns is a template column that containts a combobox bound to an ObservableCollection of the entity which feeds the row. • Image animation over CGContextDrawPDFPage

    - by BittenApple
    I'm modifying the QuartzDemo sample app from Apple. In QuartzViewController.m I have modifications (by DyingCactus) which replac the back button and add a method to handle the back button press as follows: -(void)viewDidLoad { // Add the QuartzView [scrollView addSubview:self.quartzView]; //add custom back button if this is the PDF view... if ([self.quartzView isKindOfClass:[QuartzPDFView class]]) { self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithTitle:@"QuartzDemo" style:UIBarButtonItemStyleBordered target:self action:@selector(myBackButtonHandler:)]; } } - (void)myBackButtonHandler:(id)sender { [self.quartzView setFrame:CGRectMake(150, -200, 100, 200)]; [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationDelegate:self]; [UIView setAnimationDidStopSelector:@selector(animationDidStop:finished:context:)]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:1.0]; [self.quartzView setFrame:CGRectMake(150, 0, 100, 200)]; [UIView commitAnimations]; } - (void)animationDidStop:(NSString *)animationID finished:(NSNumber *)finished context:(void *)context { [self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated:YES]; } I have a PNG image in resources folder called "bookmark.png" and would like to have that image animate as in animation in the example above. The image can be loaded in an UImageview or something and lets say that I have one called bookmark. How do I call that instead of self.quartzview in this part of code: [self.quartzView setFrame:CGRectMake(150, -200, 100, 200)]; [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationDelegate:self]; [UIView setAnimationDidStopSelector:@selector(animationDidStop:finished:context:)]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:1.0]; [self.quartzView setFrame:CGRectMake(150, 0, 100, 200)]; [UIView commitAnimations];

  • Loading animation Memory leak

    - by Ayaz Alavi
Hi, I have written network class that is managing all network calls for my application. There are two methods showLoadingAnimationView and hideLoadingAnimationView that will show UIActivityIndicatorView in a view over my current viewcontroller with fade background. I am getting memory leaks somewhere on these two methods. Here is the code -(void)showLoadingAnimationView { textmeAppDelegate *textme = (textmeAppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; [[UIApplication sharedApplication] setNetworkActivityIndicatorVisible:YES]; if(wrapperLoading != nil) { [wrapperLoading release]; } wrapperLoading = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0.0, 0.0, 320.0, 480.0)]; wrapperLoading.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; wrapperLoading.alpha = 0.8; UIView *_loadingBG = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0.0, 0.0, 320.0, 480.0)]; _loadingBG.backgroundColor = [UIColor blackColor]; _loadingBG.alpha = 0.4; circlingWheel = [[UIActivityIndicatorView alloc] initWithActivityIndicatorStyle:UIActivityIndicatorViewStyleWhiteLarge]; CGRect wheelFrame = circlingWheel.frame; circlingWheel.frame = CGRectMake(((320.0 - wheelFrame.size.width) / 2.0), ((480.0 - wheelFrame.size.height) / 2.0), wheelFrame.size.width, wheelFrame.size.height); [wrapperLoading addSubview:_loadingBG]; [wrapperLoading addSubview:circlingWheel]; [circlingWheel startAnimating]; [textme.window addSubview:wrapperLoading]; [_loadingBG release]; [circlingWheel release]; } -(void)hideLoadingAnimationView { [[UIApplication sharedApplication] setNetworkActivityIndicatorVisible:NO]; wrapperLoading.alpha = 0.0; [self.wrapperLoading removeFromSuperview]; //[NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:0.8 target:wrapperLoading selector:@selector(removeFromSuperview) userInfo:nil repeats:NO]; } Here is how I am calling these two methods [NSThread detachNewThreadSelector:@selector(showLoadingAnimationView) toTarget:self withObject:nil]; and then somewhere later in the code i am using following function call to hide animation. [self hideLoadingAnimationView]; I am getting memory leaks when I call showLoadingAnimationView function. Anything wrong in the code or is there any better technique to show loading animation when we do network calls?

  • sIFR header with inside span

    - by Pokepoke
    I've got the following situation:
This text is pretty awesome
I'm trying to give both a different style like this (only the css): h2 { font-size: 21px; text-transform: uppercase; line-height: 37px; height: 36px; text-align: right; margin-right: 10px; } h2 span { font-size: 16px; color: #666666; text-transform: lowercase; } Now just calling this like the following things doenst work and only displays the general H2 style: sIFR.replace(headache, { selector: 'h2', css: ['.sIFR-root { stylesforh2 } '], wmode: 'transparent' }); sIFR.replace(headache, { selector: 'h2 span', css: ['.sIFR-root { stylesforspan } '], wmode: 'transparent' }); neither does this work: sIFR.replace(headache, { selector: 'h2', css: ['.sIFR-root { stylesforh2 }, span { stylesforspan} '], wmode: 'transparent' }); I'm a sIFR firsttimer and I'm problably doing something silly wrong, but I cant figure it out. Can someone tell me how its done properly? Using sIFRT version 3, revision 436. Tnx in advance

  • pass objective c object and primitive type into a void *

    - by user674669
I want to pass 2 variables: UIImage * img int i into another method that only takes a (void *) I tried making a C struct containing both img and i struct MyStruct { UIImage *img; int i; } but xcode gives me an error saying "ARC forbids Objective-C objects in structs or unions" The next thing I tried is to write an objective-c class MyStruct2 containing img and i, alloc-initing an instance of it and typecasting it as (__bridge void*) before passing it to the method. Seems little involved for my use case. Seems like there should be a better way. What's the simplest way to achieve this? Thank you. Edit based on comments: I have to use void * as it is required by the UIView API. I created a selector as mentioned by UIVIew API + (void)setAnimationDidStopSelector:(SEL)selector Please see documentation for setAnimationDidStopSelector at http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/uikit/reference/UIView_Class/UIView/UIView.html . It says ... The selector should be of the form: - (void)animationDidStop:(NSString *)animationID finished:(NSNumber *)finished context:(void *)context I want to pass both img and i into the (void *)context argument.

  • Debugging an unresponsive iPhone UI

    - by buggles
I have an application that needs to update its display every minute or so. To achieve this I was using performSelector:withObject:afterDelay, calling the selector that most of the time just changes some text in a label based on a very simple (and quick) calculation. [self performSelector:@selector(updateDisplay) withObject:nil afterDelay:60]; Occasionally during an update, I have to go off and get some data from the web, and so I do that in another thread using detachNewThreadSelector. That all worked and the "performSelector after Delay" call completes in a tiny fraction of a second, and only runs once a minute. Despite this, and despite running fine on the simulator, the single button in the app is largely unresponsive, not responding to multiple stabs. So, I had assumed peformSelector:afterDelay would not block, but I'm now wondering if it is blocking in some way? I even tried NOT doing the web-look-up incase this was somehow still impacting the responsiveness. No joy. [NSThread detachNewThreadSelector:@selector(updateFromURL) toTarget:self withObject:nil]; I then pushed it through shark to see if I could see anything obvious. From here I can see the web-lookup is the only thing taking any time, but it is only being done every couple of minutes, and then clearly not running on the main thread. The app itself is consuming a tiny fraction of 1% of the CPU (0.0000034%) over 20 minutes, so it just must be a blocking issue. So, am I missing something about performSelector:afterDelay? What other common newbie mistakes might I be making. If it helps, although I've been developing applications for over 20 years, the previous 10 have been largely Java. Perhaps I have a Java assumption loaded :-) Essentially I have assumed the main thread is like the EDT (only do UI stuff on it, but keep everything else off it).

  • possible xml elements in Android resources xmls ?

    - by Vijay C
I recently came across a forum post in thelink text android developers group. (link below) It has one post which contains following xml. It is xml file which can be used in drawable folder. <selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

</selector> Now my question is, where is the documentation which tells me that i can use the following xml tags <selector> ,
, <color>, <integer-array>, <string-array> and many others tag to create xml resources...? I hope, i have explained what i want to know ?
