• apt-mirror - Changing source mirror creates new folder for downloads

  I have a local Ubuntu mirror running on ubuntu 10.04 in my office which uses archive.ubuntu.com to download updates and releases. I have been running this mirror since Ubuntu's Hardy Heron release. It downloads everything under /export/ubuntu-repo1/apt-mirror/mirror/archive.ubuntu.com/ folder. Recently I came to know that the mirror in India i.e. in.archive.ubuntu.com is a lot faster for me than http://archive.ubuntu.com which is based in UK. Therefore to download latest release QUANTAL QUETZAL I configured Indian mirror in /etc/apt/mirror.list After making this change and leaving apt-mirror to run overnight I found that it downloaded everything to a new folder called "in.archive.ubuntu.com" so now I have two folders where apt-mirror downloads updates. /export/ubuntu-repo1/apt-mirror/mirror/archive.ubuntu.com/ /export/ubuntu-repo1/apt-mirror/mirror/in.archive.ubuntu.com/ Now, since apache does not have "in.archive.ubuntu.com" configured, Ubuntu clients are unable to access QUANTAL QUETZAL release and its updates. My question is: Is there a way I could copy everything downloaded under "in.archive.ubuntu.com" to "archive.ubuntu.com" so all new updates of the latest release become accessible to Ubuntu clients? Secondly, Can I configure apt-mirror to download everything to archive.ubuntu.com even using Indian mirror? Thanks a lot for your help in advance. I Kazi

• Bash script not adding variables to session

  I have a bash script that I have added as a startup application. It does a bunch of exports and alias assignment. #! /bin/bash alias devhm='cd ${DEV_HOME}; ll'; alias wlhm='cd ${WL_HOME}; ll'; alias dirch='watch --interval=1 "ls -la"'; alias vols='watch --interval=1 "df -h"'; alias svn-update='svn update --depth infinity ./*'; alias mci="~/mci.sh"; alias vncserver="vncserver -geometry 1680x1050"; alias ..="cd .."; alias hist="history | grep "; export PROXY_HOST=proxy.my.setup; export PROXY_PORT=3128; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH/usr/lib/oracle/12.1/client64/lib; export ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/12.1/client64; export TNS_ADMIN=${ORACLE_HOME}/network/admin; echo "DONE!"; But none of these values are available in my terminal sessions anymore. Even when I run the script straight into the terminal like so: ./setup.sh I see the "DONE!" prompt printed but no aliases or env variables are set. If I copy and paste the contents of the file into the terminal the aliases and env variables are set. I have tried adding a line to execute the script from .bashrc also but still no aliases or env variables set. Any ideas what might be going on here? Also could anyone suggest a better way to have these env variables/aliases added to every terminal session?

• Running & Managing Concurrent Queries in SQL Developer

  We’ve all been there – you’ve managed to write a query that takes longer than a few seconds to execute. Tuning aside, sometimes it takes longer than you want for a query to run. So what’s a SQL Developer user to do? I say, keep going! While you’re waiting for your query to finish, there’s no reason why you can’t continue on with your work. If you need to execute something else in a worksheet, there’s no reason to launch a 2nd or 3rd copy of SQL Developer. Just open an un-shared worksheet. Now while you’ve got 1 or more queries running, you can easily get yourself into a situation where you’re not sure what’s running where. Or maybe you want to cancel a query or just check how long something’s been running. Just open the Task Progress Panel If a query or task in SQL Developer takes more than 3-5 seconds, it will appear in the Task Progress panel. You can then watch the throbbers go back and forth while you sip your coffee/soda/Red Bull. Run a query, spawn a new worksheet, run another query, watch them in the Task Progress panel. • rsync problems and security concerns

  Hi I am attempting to use rsync to copy files between two linux servers. both on 10.04.4 I have set up the ssh and a script running under a cron job. this is the message i get back from the cron job. • Where is the Flash in Chrome?

  I installed Google Chrome. This is the first thing I did after installing Ubuntu. I went into firefox, and went to chrome.google.com, and hit the button. I don't like package managers, and avoid the command line like the pox. Then, I started using Google Chrome. I went to Kongregate, and clicked on a game. It told me I didn't have flash. A few different websites told me the same. I assumed that they must have been wrong. I hit the link to Adobe, to install Flash, and it reassured me; of course, Google Chrome includes Flash. I checked my version - Chrome 5.0.375.126. Of course, I just downloaded it. I scoured the internet for solutions. None worked. Many seemed to involve re-enabling Flash, or something like that. But insofar as I can tell, there is no Flash anywhere in my Chrome. I feel like I bought a Reese's cup, and found solid chocolate. I checked in the Chrome plugin manager, and everything. A few solutions told me to copy some garbage into my command line and hit enter (as almost all solutions to problems on linux entail). I did it, reluctantly, and it did nothing. I thought Flash was supposed to come with Chrome. But it didn't. Sooooo... What gives? • Caching WCF javascript proxy on browser

  When you use WCF services from Javascript, you have to generate the Javascript proxies by hitting the Service.svc/js. If you have five WCF services, then it means five javascripts to download. As browsers download javascripts synchronously, one after another, it adds latency to page load and slows down page rendering performance. Moreover, the same WCF service proxy is downloaded from every page, because the generated javascript file is not cached on browser. Here is a solution that will ensure the generated Javascript proxies are cached on browser and when there is a hit on the service, it will respond with HTTP 304 if the Service.svc file has not changed. Here’s a Fiddler trace of a page that uses two WCF services. You can see there are two /js hits and they are sequential. Every visit to the same page, even with the same browser session results in making those two hits to /js. Second time when the same page is browsed: You can see everything else is cached, except the WCF javascript proxies. They are never cached because the WCF javascript proxy generator does not produce the necessary caching headers to cache the files on browser. Here’s an HttpModule for IIS and IIS Express which will intercept calls to WCF service proxy. It first checks if the service is changed since the cached version on the browser. If it has not changed then it will return HTTP 304 and not go through the service proxy generation process. Thus it saves some CPU on server. But if the request is for the first time and there’s no cached copy on browser, it will deliver the proxy and also emit the proper cache headers to cache the response on browser. http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/360437/Caching-WCF-javascript-proxy-on-browser Don’t forget to vote.

• Tale of an Encrypted SSIS Package in msdb and a Lost Password

    Yesterday a Developer at work asked for a copy of an SSIS package in Production so he could work on it (please, dear Reader – withhold judgment on Source Control – I know!). I logged on to the SSIS instance, and when I went to export the package… Oops. I didn’t have that password. The DBA who uploaded the package to Production is long gone; my fellow DBA had no idea either - and the Devs returned a cricket sound when queried. So I posed the obligatory question on #SQLHelp and a bunch of folks jumped in – some to help and some to make fun of me (thanks, @SQLSoldier @crummel4 @maryarcia and @sqljoe). I tried their suggestions to no avail…even ran some queries to see if I could figure out how to extract the package XML from the system tables in msdb:   SELECT CAST(CAST(p.packagedata AS varbinary(max)) AS varchar(max)) FROM msdb.dbo.sysssispackages p WHERE p.name = 'LePackage'   This just returned a bunch of XML with encrypted data on it:  I knew there was a job in SQL Agent scheduled to execute the package, and when I tried to look at details on the job step I got the following: Not very helpful. The password had to be saved somewhere, but where?? All of a sudden I remembered that there was a system table I hadn’t queried yet: SELECT sjs.command FROM msdb.dbo.sysjobs sj JOIN msdb.dbo.sysjobsteps sjs ON sj.job_id = sjs.job_id WHERE sj.name = 'Run LePackage' The result: “Well, that’s really secure”, I thought to myself. • High number of ethernet errors. Tool for testing the ethernet card?

  I have an Asus Sabertooth X79. I often get corrupted files. I checked the RAM, but memtest finds no errors. To avoid the possibility of disk errors, I tried copying the files to tmpfs. If I copy from the network, I get md5sum mismatches about once every 10 times using a 6Gb file. Copying from RAM to RAM, I didn't get mismatches. I get a very high number of errors in ifconfig (compared to others PCs I just took as reference, which have 0 with much more traffic). Here is an example RX packets:13972848 errors:200 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:101 The motherboard is new, but do you think there're some problems with it? What could I use to test the (integrated) network adapter? What else do you think I should double check? --edit-- I tried another NIC, it gives a lot of Corrupted MAC on Input. Disconnecting: Packet corrupt lost connection. I noticed that another PC downloads at 11.1MB/s without problems. This pc at 66.0 MB/s. Is there any way to try to limit the speed?

• Unity custom shaders and z-fighting

  I've just readed a chapter of Unity iOS Essential by Robert Wiebe. It shows a solution for handling z-figthing problem occuring while rendering a street on a plane with the same y offset. Basically it modified Normal-Diffuse shader provided by Unity, specifing the (texture?) offset in -1, -1. I don't know CG nor GLSL, but I've a little bit of experience with HLSL. Anyway I can't figure out what exactly is going on. Could anyone explain me what exactly Offset directly does, and how is solves z-fighting problems?

• Back up a single table in SQL Server

  SQL Server doesn’t have an easy way to take a table backup, so I often use the bcp (Bulk Copy Program) to accomplish the same goal. I’ve mentioned this before, and someone told me when they tried it they couldn’t restore the table – ah the dangers of telling people half the information! I should have mentioned that you need to have a “format file” ready if the table does not exist at the destination. In my case I already had the table, in this person’s case they did not. The format file can be used to rebuild that table structure before the data is bcp’d in, and you can read more about it here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191516.aspx There’s another way to back up a table, and that’s to create a Filegroup and place the table there. Then you can take a Filegroup backup to back up a single table. Of course, there are other methods of moving a single table’s data in an out, including SQL Server Integration Services and even the older Data Transformation Services, or simply by using hte SQLCMD or PowerShell utilities to run a query and just save the output to a file. In fact, these days I’m using a PowerShell script to build INSERT statements from that query. That could also easily be modified to create the table structure (or modify one if needed) quite easily.   I have exactly the same problem as described here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12849986/connection-timeout-when-accessing-github So I'll just copy & paste: I have some weird problems. When I try to log in my Github account, I get a "net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE" error. I tried with Chrome, Firefox and Opera. In Firefox, if a clean the cache and offline data, it works for a while. Then I can log in, but I still can't create a Github repository, even if I clear the cache again. My friend, in the same network, with Windows, can do whatever he wants on Github's web site, but I can't. I tried many DNS servers, I tried not to set it (my friend doesn't), but it's still not working. My OS: Ubuntu x64 12.04 Ideas, please. And thanks. Also, I can clone any repo but I can't push. I had to change to https://codeplane.com/ due to this problem, but I want to understand why it happens. • Trying to login to openssh, permission denied

Here’s how to do it with Google Docs Spreadsheets. If you’re an Excel user, you’re also in luck, because we’ve already shown you how to turn a row into a column, or vice-versa. It won’t make you any less bored though. Convert a Row to a Column (or backwards) The first thing you’ll need is a column or a row of information that you want to convert into the opposite. For our example, we’ve got this set of data that we created by using the Auto Fill options in Google Docs. Now in another cell, you’ll need to use the TRANSPOSE function, which you can use by simply typing in the following: =TRANSPOSE( And then selecting the cells with the mouse, or manually typing in the range of cells you want to copy. The final function in this example was: =TRANSPOSE(A1:A11) Finish it off with the final ) character to complete the function, hit the Enter key, and there we are… the column was transposed over to the right. You can use the same thing to turn columns into rows, or rows into columns—just change the range you are looking for. The day started with a great presentation from Joel Brenner, author of "America The Vulnerable", as he discussed the impact of state sponsored espionage on businesses. The opportunity for every business is to turn security into a business advantage. As we enter an in-hospitable security climate, every business has to adapt to the security climate change.  Amit Jasuja's presentation focused on how customers can secure the new digital experience. As every sector of the economy transforms to adapt to changing global economic pressures, every business has to adapt. For IT organizations, the biggest transformation will involve cloud, mobile and social. Organizations that can get security right in the "new work order" will have an advantage. It is truly the end of work as we know it.  The "new work order" means working anytime and anywhere. The office is anywhere we want it to be because work is not a place it is an activity. • Corrupted Views when migrating document libraries from SharePoint 2003 to 2007

  A coworker of mine ran into this error recently, while migrating a document library from SharePoint 2003 to 2007: “A WebPartZone can only exist on a page which contains a SPWebPartManager. The SPWebPartManager must be placed before any WebPartZones on the page.” He saw this when he tried to see the All Documents view for the library. After looking into it, we figured out what had happened.  He was migrating documents using the Explorer View in SharePoint.  He had copied the contents of the library from one server (a remote server that we didn’t have administrative access to) to his desktop.  He then opened an Explorer View of the new library and copied the files to it.  Well, it turns out he had copied the hidden “Forms” folder, which contained the files necessary to display the different views for the library. (He had set his explorer to show hidden files, which made them visible.) So, he had copied the 2003 forms to the 2007 library, which are incompatible. We fixed it, by simply deleting the new document library, recreating it, and then copied everything except that hidden Forms folder.  Another option might have been to create a new document library on 2007, and copy the Forms folder from it to the broken library.  Since we didn’t need to save anything in the broken BTW, I confirmed my suspicion with this blog post: http://palmettotq.com/blog/?p=54

• LEMP Stack on Ubuntu Server 13.04 not parsing PHP Switch Statement Properly

• Apache Not Accepting a Path in My Home Folder

  I have trying to set up an Apache site to use a folder in my home folder without any success. I exactly followed the steps in this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP yet I did not succeed; I keep getting error 403, which says that the server doesn't have permission to access the requested page. I searched forums and many suggested changing the permission of the folder. I went straight away and set the permission to 777, but that didn't solve the problem. I made another search and somebody gave me a clue, which is that it could be because my home folder is encrypted. I believe this could be the problem, but: What is the relation between encryption and Apache? I suppose Apache server is requesting the file from the system, rather than trying to access the file bytes! Is there anyway to solve this problem? I don't want to move the folder to /var/www because I am using this Apache for testing, so I want whatever change I make to be immediately reflected, rather than having to copy files which is error prone.

• Per-vertex animation with VBOs: VBO per character or VBO per animation?

  Goal To leverage the richness of well vetted animation tools such as Blender to do the heavy lifting for a small but rich set of animations. I am aware of additive pose blending like that from Naughty Dog and similar techniques but I would prefer to expend a little RAM/VRAM to avoid implementing a thesis-ready pose solver. I would also like to avoid implementing a key-frame + interpolation curve solver (reinventing Blender vertex groups and IPOs), if possible. Scenario Meshes are animated using either skeletons (skinned animation) or some form of morph targets (i.e. per-vertex key frames). However, in either case, the animations are known in full at load-time, that is, there is no physics, IK solving, or any other form of in-game pose solving. The number of character actions (animations) will be limited but rich (hand-animated). There may be multiple characters using a each mesh and its animations simultaneously in-game (they will likely be at different frames of the same animation at the same time). Assume color and texture coordinate buffers are static. Current Considerations Much like a non-shader-powered pose solver, create a VBO for each character and copy vertex and normal data to each VBO on each frame (VBO in STREAMING). Create one VBO for each animation where each frame (interleaved vertex and normal data) is concatenated onto the VBO. Then each character simply has a buffer pointer offset based on its current animation frame (e.g. pointer offset = (numVertices+numNormals)*frameNumber). (VBO in STATIC) Known Trade-Offs In 1 above: Each VBO would be small but there would be many VBOs and therefore lots of buffer binding and vertex copying each frame. Both client and pipeline intensive. In 2 above: There would be few VBOs therefore insignificant buffer binding and no vertex data getting jammed down the pipe each frame, but each VBO would be quite large. Are there any pitfalls to number 2 (aside from finite memory)? I've found a lot of information on what you can do, but no real best practices. Are there other considerations or methods that I am missing?
