• Move Camera Freely Around Object While Looking at It

  I've got a 3D model loaded (a planet) and I have a camera that I want to allow the user to move freely around it. I have no problem getting the camera to orbit the planet around either the x or y axis. My problem is when I try to move the camera on a different axis I have no idea how to go about doing it. I am using OpenGL on Android with the libGDX library. I want the camera to orbit the planet in the direction that the user swipes their finger on the screen.

  I'm looking for some notebook that will run on Ubuntu perfectly. I like LENOVO IdeaPad Z570, but I'm not sure how it will perform on Ubuntu. I heard people are complaining about wireless problems.   I am developing my first project using test driven development. I am using Zend Framework and PHPUnit. Currently my project is at 100% code coverage but I am not sure I understand in what order I am supposed to write my code. Am I supposed to write my test FIRST with what my objects are expected to do or write my objects and then test them? Ive been working on completing a controller/model and then writing at test for it but I am not sure this is what TDD is about? Any advice? For example, I wrote my Auth plugin and my Auth controller and tested that they work properly in my browser, and then I sat down to write the tests for them, which proved that there were some logical errors in the code that did work in the browser.

  I'm working on a project loosely following the scrum model. We're doing two week sprints. Something I'm not clear on (and don't have a book to consult) is exactly what is supposed to happen between sprints: there should be some "wrap" process, where the product gets built and delivered, but: how long does this typically take? should the whole team be involved? does it strictly have to finish before developers start working on the next sprint items? is this when code review and testing take place? There are three developers, adding up to about 1 FTE. So the sprints are indeed very short.

• How do you start modding a game without an editor?

  I often come across very impressive mods for PC games that don't have an official editor, other development tools or its source code publicly available. (Take this amazing Multiplayer mod for Just Cause 2, for example.) How do you go about creating mods for such games? I'm not talking about replacing the odd texture or 3D model—that sort of thing seems fairly easy given tools to pry them out of game files and put them back in—but more along the lines of adding game behavior. (Tweaking settings files also doesn't count.) Note that I'm not asking "how to create a mod", I just want to know where to start or where to go to learn.

• Display monitor info via command line

  Is there a way to query monitor information from command line? For example, get monitor model, similar to e.g. what lspci does for graphic card info, or whether it's currently on or off, things like that. If possible, what kinds of basic information such as the above can be easily gathered? For example, is it possible to determine if monitor is in portrait or landscape position? Or if it has built-in speakers or not? Command line is the preference, but if there's a GUI method, I'd like to hear about it, too.

• Putting Ubuntu Server on to a networked HDD

  Firstly, I know very little about servers and secondly the 1Tb HDD I have has network capabilities, but no software is installed on it, so when connected to the computer it is seen as a network connection, but not as a drive. Any advice on how to get started would be great. Up until now, I have been using it as a USB drive which worked well, but when this is sorted, I would like it to be connected directly to our BT HomeHub accessible through the WiFi for all the family to use as a film and back up repository. I would then be able to set up individual accounts for each family member to use and may be, if possible, make it accessible from outside locations. The First question then is: How can I install Ubuntu server on the 1Tb HDD attached directly to the computers network port but which doesn't show up in Nautilus? • 2D fighting bounding boxes

  I'm prototyping a 2D platformer/brawler game for uni and I'm having some trouble with creating collision/bounding boxes. This is most likely going to end up on a Vita so I do have some library constraints as well as performance implications. None of this has yet been implemented but is all theory. My idea was to have the artist create a sprite sheet for the character animation and then a second identical sprite sheet with the corresponding collisions in a solid colour (e.g green for where the character can be hit and red for dealing damage, near the foot if kicking etc.) With this, I would then parse the collision sheet and generate the various collisions required storing them in the character model. This is the point I feel would be most inefficient. While I think this is a possible solution, I was wondering if there was a more standard way of doing this or a more efficient way as I feel this would have severe performance problems.

• Programmer's career path

  I've been working as a programmer for the last few years - different companies and freelancing, mostly developing internal-business web applications (well, that's the current model of development, it seems). Besides simple coding I was working on specs, designing applications, and all those around-like things. My question is, what's the career path I should be aiming for? Is it like working on code for the rest of my life? :) Or do programmers make a good manager-position people (I know, those require quite different set of skills) and I should try to improve myself to this direction? I know it's very subjective. Thing is, lately I find myself much more into the designing/working on specs part of the development project then the coding itself. How do you see it? Would you like to go from development to management? Would you like to work on a project with a manager that used to be a coder? Would you like to hire one? :)

• Why does unity obj import flip my x coordinate?

  When I import my wavefront obj model into unity and then draw lines over it with the same coordinates in the obj file, the x coordinate is negated. I don't see any option in the importer that might be doing that. And I'm using the same localToWorldMatrix and the same coordinate data in the .obj file.   We are on the stage of planning a CakePHP project. It is a relatively a big project for us, as a developer+project manager, I want to hire someone to work with me. But what I really want is to spend less time on actual coding, without losing control of the code quality. What I want to do is that I will design all the functions of the project in CakePHP, at least all the model's functions, and leave the implementation part to the coder who I am going to hire. But my worry is still if I am going to lose control of the code quality using this approach? is it feasible to do so or it is going to turn this project to a chaos.   So in a bout of fancy I have decided I want to play as a Zaku II from gundam, and was saddened that player skins must be symmetrical. Then I remembered my friends mod that let him play as a MLP pony, and another one that let you shapeshift into mobs. So I decided I could just butcher a player model mesh and slap on the shoulder spike and shield, slap a Zaku skin I found on it, port the colors over onto more texture for the shoulder portions, and call it a day once I added it to the shiftable list, before butchering a gun mod to turn a gun into a ZMP-78. Before I get started on this though, I need to know if minecraft will support an asymmetrical mesh.

  We have the requirement to find a result in a collection of records based on a prioritised set of search criteria against a relational db (I'm talking indexed field matching here rather than text search). The way we are thinking about designing the query is to begin with a highly refined and specific set of criteria. If there are no results for this initial query we want to progressively reduce the criteria one by one in order of reducing priority, querying each time such a less specific set of criteria until we find a result we can accept. Alternatively, we have considered starting with a smaller set of criteria and increasing until we have reduced number of results down to the last set. What I would like to know is if an existing term to describe this type of query exists? So that we can look to model our own on existing patterns and use best practice.

• Using gerrit (or similar tool) on a team where multiple devs work on a single feature

  We have a team of roughly ~8 devs who regularly work on the same feature over the course of a 3 week sprint. It isn't quite pair programming, but in our current workflow devs regularly push up incomplete code for a colleague to complete. This worked fine before we introduced Gerrit, but now our commits need to represent chunks of test-passing, complete, logical functionality, and so the model breaks. My only idea is to have everybody push up to a separate, untracked branch up until the functionality is ready for review, then squash everything into commits that make sense and push up. Is there another Gerrit-ized workflow that could work? I know this is a widely discussed topic on Google Groups, and that there has recently been some discussion of Gerrit topic reviews, but I wanted to see if there is anybody out there using Gerrit in this way, and what the suggested workflow would be.

  I want to purchase a number of 3D models from TurboSquid and animate them in an XNA game. I wrote a lot of games from 1985-1999 and have recently become involved with XNA. Now I would like to port one of my old games to the XBOX. I do have a background in 3D animation; but that was years ago. What is the current method for animating a walk cycle with a 3D model and using it inside XNA? Is there a book, software or a tutorial that you can recommend? • Ubuntu fail to start on a dual boot with Windows 7 on Vaio

  I followed the instructions for the Ubuntu windows installer on my Sony Vaio laptop (model SVT131A11M). Upon restart I was prompt to choose the OS for boot (Win7 or Ubuntu), but then I shut down the machine and from the next boot, every time I choose to boot into Ubuntu, the GNU GRUB terminal appears with a grub> prompt. Now I'm able to boot into Win7, but can't boot into Ubuntu properly. Why does it happen and how come I was able to start Ubuntu successfully the first time?
