• I copied a Windows VM from Mac VMWare to Windows VMWare Player. It runs, but very slowly...

  I copied a Windows XP VM that I've been using on my Mac (VMWare Fusion)to a Windows 7 machine that has VMWare 7 installed. I was quite pleased when it started up and appeared to work, but when I actually tried to use it, I noticed it runs very slowly. Unusably so. It takes about 10 minutes, for example, for a Visual Studio 2010 project to open (with VS 2010 running in the VM). Is this supposed to work? Is there any way to fix this VM to get it to run well under Windows VMWare Player?

• Real world pitfalls of introducing F# into a large codebase and engineering team

  I'm CTO of a software firm with a large existing codebase (all C#) and a sizable engineering team. I can see how certain parts of the code would be far easier to write in F#, resulting in faster development time, fewer bugs, easier parallel implementations, etc., basically overall productivity gains for my team. However, I can also see several productivity pitfalls of introducing F#, namely: 1) Everyone has to learn F#, and it's not as trivial as switching from, say, Java to C#. Team members that have not learned F# will be unable to work on F# parts of the codebase. 2) The pool of hireable F# programmers, as of now (Dec 2010) is non-existent. Search various software engineer resume databases for "F#", way less than 1% of resumes contain the keyword. 3) Community support as of now (Dec 2010) is less available. You can google almost any problem in C# and find someone that has already dealt with it, not so with F#. Third party tool support (NUnit, Resharper etc) is also sketchy. I realize that this is a bit Catch-22, i.e. if people like me don't use F# then the community and tools will never materialize, etc. But, I've got a company to run, and I can be cutting edge but not bleeding edge. Any other pitfalls I'm not considering? Or anyone care to rebut the pitfalls I've mentioned? I think this is an important discussion and would love to hear your counter-arguments in this public forum that may do a lot to increase F# adoption by industry. Thanks.

• VS 11 Beta merge tool is awesome, except for resovling conflicts

  If you've downloaded the new VS 11 Beta and done any merging, then you've probably seen the new diff and merge tools built into VS 11.  They are awesome, and by far a vast improvement over the ones included in VS 2010.  There is one problem with the merge tool though, and in my opinion it is huge.Basically the problem with the new VS 11 Beta merge tool is that when you are resolving conflicts after performing a merge, you cannot tell what changes were made in each file where the code is conflicting.  Was the conflicting code added, deleted, or modified in the source and target branches?  I don't know (without explicitly opening up the history of both the source and target files), and the merge tool doesn't tell me.  In my opinion this is a huge fail on the part of the designers/developers of the merge tool, as it actually forces me to either spend an extra minute for every conflict to view the source and target file history, or to go back to use the merge tool in VS 2010 to properly assess which changes I should take.I submitted this as a bug to Microsoft, but they say that this is intentional by design. WHAT?! So they purposely crippled their tool in order to make it pretty and keep the look consistent with the new diff tool?  That's like purposely putting a little hole in the bottom of your cup for design reasons to make it look cool.  Sure, the cup looks cool, but I'm not going to use it if it leaks all over the place and doesn't do the job that it is intended for. Bah! but I digress.Because this bug is apparently a feature, they asked me to open up a "feature request" to have the problem fixed. Please go vote up both my bug submission and the feature request so that this tool will actually be useful by the time the final VS 11 product is released.

Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz with 8 GB RAM and integrated graphics (Mac Book Pro 13") Core i7 @ 2.6 GHz with 4 GB RAM and 512 MB dedicated graphics (Mac Book Pro 15") I plan to run Windows x64 in the VM with SQL Server 2008, Visual Studio 2010, and SharePoint 2010. I am planning to run VMWare Fusion v3. I also didn't know if a dedicated graphics card makes a difference when using a Virtual Machine. Thank you.

Following our StreamInsight 1.0 launch in Spring 2010, we offered StreamInsight 1.1 in Fall 2010 with implicit compatibility and an upgraded setup to support side by side installs. With this setup, your applications will automatically point to the latest runtime, but you still have the choice to point your application back to a 1.0 runtime if you choose to do so. As the next step, in order to enable timely delivery of our releases to you, we are pleased to announce the support for automatic download and install of StreamInsight 1.1 release via Microsoft Update starting this week.   Apache is receiving requests at port :80 and proxying them to Jetty at port :8080 The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server The proxy server could not handle the request GET /. My dilemma: Everything works fine normally (fast requests, few seconds or few tens of seconds long requests are processed ok). Problems occur when request processing takes long (few minutes?). If I issue request instead directly to Jetty at port :8080 the request is processed OK. So problem is likely to sit somewhere between Apache and Jetty where I am using mod_proxy. How to solve this? I have already tried some "tricks" related to KeepAlive settings, without luck.   Hi, i need to build mapnik on freebsd 6.3, but port marked as 'broken', so i forced to build it from source. With boost 1.41 (which is in ports) mapnik doesn't build. somewhere in internet, i found that mapnik successfully builded with boost 1.42. • Basic OpenVPN setup not working

  I am attempting to connect 2 win7 (x64+ x32) computers (there will be 4 in total) using OpenVPN. Right now they are on the same network but the intention is to be able to access the client remotely regardless of its location. The Problem I am having is I am unable to ping or tracert between the two computers. They seem to be on different subnets even though I have the mask set to 255.255.255.0. The server ends up as 10.8.0.1 255.255.255.252 and the client 10.8.0.6 255.255.255.252. And a third ends up as 10.8.0.10. I don't know if this a Windows 7 problem or something I have wrong in my config.
