• Restricted Flow Of Power

  I'm sure all is fine, but i need some reassurance. Last month my company launched consolidated two of their websites into one new website. www.fdmgroup.com and www.fdmacademy.com into a newly designed www.fdmgroup.com. Because the FDM Academy grew as it's own brand we decided not to just forward the domain to the fdmgroup website, but instead just mirror the new FDM Group website and use a canonical tags to the FDM Group domain (so the link juice will pass to the FDM Group domain pages) The website has be live for nearly a month and i don't believe any power has passed down through the FDM Group website to it's deeper pages even though 301 redirects from the legacy group and academy domains in place. I am also seeing the same problem on the FDM Academy domain, but i expect to see this as every page has a canonical to the same page on the Is there anything which is restricting the flow of power through the site, or am i just being impatient. • What's a good way to store a series of interconnected pipe and tank objects?

  I am working on a puzzle game with a 6 by 6 grid of storage tanks that are connected to up to 4 tanks adjacent to them via pipes. The gameplay is concerned with combining what's in a tank with an adjacent tank via the pipe than interconnects them. Right now I store the tanks in a 6x6 array, vertical pipes in a 5x6 array, and horizontal pipes in a 6x5 array. Each tank has a reference to the object that contains both tanks and pipes and when a pipe needs to be animated filling with liquid, the selected tank just calls a method on the container object telling it to animate the pipes it is connected to (subtract 1 from row or column to find connected pipes). This feels like the wrong way of doing it, as I've also considered just giving each tank references to the pipes connected to it to access directly.

• Algorithm to generate N random numbers between A and B which sum up to X

  This problem seemed like something which should be solvable with but a few lines of code. Unfortunately, once I actually started to write the thing, I've realized it's not as simple as it sounds. What I need is a set of X random numbers, each of which is between A and B and they all add up to X. The exact variables for the problem I'm facing seem to be even simpler: I need 5 numbers, between -1 and 1 (note: these are decimal numbers), which add up to 1. My initial "few lines of code, should be easy" approach was to randomize 4 numbers between -1 and 1 (which is simple enough), and then make the last one 1-(sum of previous numbers). This quickly proved wrong, as the last number could just as well be larger than 1 or smaller than -1. What would be the best way to approach this problem? PS. Just for reference: I'm using C#, but I don't think it matters. I'm actually having trouble creating a good enough solution for the problem in my head.

• How to change time servers in 11.10

  I'm behind NAT, so I can't access pool.ntp.org or Ubuntu's own time servers directly, and I'd like to change the time servers for my system. When googling, I find references to missing manpages like ntpd.conf(5) and ntpd(8), to a missing GUI for setting the time servers, and to a cron script (/etc/cron.daily/ntpdate) that doesn't seem to exist on my system. I've also found a reference to there being changes to ntpd.conf, so I'm hesitant to just create that file in /etc. How is one supposed to change the time servers in 11.10?

I tried to use a reference device but it seems to run very slowly, then I found some samples in C++ that allows me to change to a WARP device and the performance is good. • Compiling old versions of R (2.11 or older) on Ubuntu 13.10 (or newer)?

  I am trying to compile an old version of R (2.11.1, specifically). "Why?", you might ask. Well, I have a program I am trying to run (that was not written by me, but I am hoping to use in my research) that was written in "old" R, and the program writer has specifically mentioned that R-2.11.1 or older must be used. I have run ./configure with no obvious errors (the entire output being far too long to post here, but I have been warned that I cannot make PDF, DVI, or HTML versions of the help pages, which I'm not too concerned about). Next, when I pass the make command, I am met with the following error (after a long stream of successful commands): Warning in solve.default(rgb): unable to load shared library '/home/sbowerma/Programs/R-2.11.1/modules//lapack.so': /home/sbowerma/Programs/R-2.11.1/lib/libRlapack.so: undefined symbol: _gfortran_compare_string Error in solve.default(rgb) : lapack routines cannot be loaded Error: unable to load R code in package 'grDevices' Execution halted However, I have confirmed that the library lapack.so is, in fact, in the exact position it is supposed to be.

• Android Java: Way to effectively pause system time while debugging?

  In my project, I call nanoTime and use that to get a deltaTime which I pass to my entities and animations. However, while debugging (for example, stepping through my code), the system time on my phone is happily chugging along, so it's impossible to look at, say, two sequential frames of data in the debugger (since by the time I'm done looking at the first frame, the system time has continued to move ahead by seconds or even minutes). Is there a programming practice or method to pause the system clock (or a way for my code to intercept and fake my deltaTime) whenever I pause execution from the debugger? Additional Information: I'm using Eclipse Classic with the ADT plugin and a Samsung SII, coding in Java. • MVC Design Pattern to Combine Multiple Models for use

  In my design, I have multiple models and each model has a controller. I need to use all the models to process some operation. Most examples I see are pretty simple with 1 view, 1 controller, and 1 model. How would you get all these models together? Only ways I can think of are 1) Have a top-level controller which has a reference to every controller. Those controllers will have a getter/setter function for their model. Does this violate MVC because every controller should have a model? 2) Have an Intermediate class to combine every model into a one model. Then you create a controller for that new super model. Do you know of any better ideas? Thanks.

• Knowledge of a Language vs. Games in Portfolio

  How important is the knowledge of a language versus the games that you have developed in your portfolio? To be more specific. Personally, I dislike C++ for several reason(mainly due to it's complexity, and pointers, and I prefer D as my language of choice thus far. Due to this, I've written two games in D instead of C++ that are my personal projects. Am I wasting my time with D? Should I start using C++ again? For reference, I have 6 months of experience in C++. It's the first language I learned. I have messed around with SDL/SFML and a bit of Direct3D with C++ as well. Even though I like D, i'd rather not waste my time learning it, if it in no way will help me get a job in the gaming industry.

  I’m writing simple strategy game (in xna), and would like to have an animated background. In my game all the actions happens inside one screen and thus standard parallax effect does not look appropriate. • How to get several frequency ranges at the same time in fmod?

  After reading documentation and tutorials about fmod I still have a question about frequency ranges. I've found how to get a frequency range using low and high pass DSP at the same time on the main channel, but I can't find how to get several ranges at the same time. For example I want, for a specific phase of my game, to hear range 400 to 600Hz and 1000 to 2000hz of the same sound. I tried to create a channel by range, but it doesn't seem to work (or maybe I do something wrong). How can I do that ? Thank you

• GPU optimization question: pre-computed or procedural?

  Good morning, I'm learning shader program and need some general direction. I want to add noise to my laser beam (like this). Which is the best way to handle it? I could pre-compute an image and pass it to the shader. I could then use the image to change the opacity and easily animate the smoke by changing the offset of the texture lookup. I could also generate noise in the shader and do the same thing the texture was used for. Is it generally better to avoid I/O to the graphics card or the opposite? Thanks!

• Ubuntu move fullscreen window to other monitor?

  I have been using Cinnamon with Ubuntu for quite some time now and here with full screen applications (games and the like) I could press META to bring up the "start menu/tray" then right-click that application and "move to monitor - monitor 1" - I see no such button when right-clicking applications from tray on Ubuntu with Unity. I'd prefer being able to do it that way since I am more used to it, is there some way to enable it for Unity? • How do I swap two objects in C# (specifically Mono) without triggering GC?

  I have two array lists. that I want to swap each frame. My question is, does the variable 'temp' need to be a member variable to avoid triggering GC, assuming this method is called on dozens of objects each frame? I'm not creating a new object, just a new reference to an object. public void LateUpdate(){ ArrayList<int> temp = previousFrameCollisions; previousFrameCollisions = currentFrameCollisions; currentFrameCollisions = temp; currentFrameCollisions.clear(); } I've been told there's no reason to make a primitive into a member variable just to avoid GC, so my best guess is that this also applies to object references.

  Good day! I recently installed 12.04. I am having a hard time connecting to the Internet using my Sun Broadband Wireless. I installed the 64-bit version. I am from the Philippines. When I plug in my USB stick, it does not show up on the Network Manager/ no new connection can be detected. I try to edit it using Edit Connections but still to no avail.   I am learning C# and I'm wondering if there is the potential to develop an Android app that satisfy the need that I'm going to explain. I would basically need an app that, when launched retrieves some data from a webpage (i.e. realtime stock prices), trim the xml to find the data i need and store this value into a variable. Then some calculation is performed on this data and the result is sent via email. It is already possible to launch an app automatically based on some conditions (e.g. every 5 minutes) by using the software Tasker. It is actually also possible to retrieve the data from a webpage and save to a Tasker variable or to a txt file somewhere in the phone (or Dropbox/Box...).
