• Restrict SSL access for some paths on a apache2 server

  I wanted to allow access to www.mydomain.com/login through ssl only. E.g.: Whenever someone accessed http://www.mydomain.com/login, I wanted him to be redirect to https://www.mydomain.com/login so it's impossible for him/her to access that site without SSL. I accomplished this by adding the following lines to the virtual host for www.mydomain.com on port 80 in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^80$ RewriteRule ^/login(.*)$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}/login$1 [L,R] RewriteLog "/var/log/apache2/rewrite.log" Now, I want to restrict using SSL for www.mydomain.com. That means, whenever someone accessed https://www.mydomain.com, I want him to be redirected to http://www.mydomain.com (for performance reasons). I tried this by adding the following lines to the virtual host of www.mydomain.com on port 443 in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default-ssl: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^443$ RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://%{SERVER_NAME}/$1 [L,R] RewriteLog "/var/log/apache2/rewrite.log" But when I now try to access www.mydomain.com/login, I get an error message that the server has caused to many redirects. That does make sense. Obviously, the two RewriteRules are playing ping-pong against each other. How could I work around this?

• Track a Adobe Flash app hosted on multiple domains with Google Analytics

  I'm working on a flash app that's gonna be distributed to more and more partners (and obviously domains). It needs to be tracked aggregated and also separately. I implemented Google Analytics using gaforflash, tracking virtual pageviews and events inside the flash app. What I want to achieve: View an aggregated report of all partners. Identify the partner not by the domain (where the flash is used), but by a partnerID. Each partner needs access to the report of his domain. (no admin rights needed) I came up with this solution: Using only one "Web property" in Google Analytics. UA-XXXXXX-4 .example.com Set a custom/virtual hostname per partner. (GA's "utmhn" parameter) partner1.example.com partner2.example.com Create a profile for each partner, setting the filter to include only the relevant "subdomain" Problems that came up: The gaforflash library doesn't support overriding the host name. Possible workaround: The gaforflash source code is available, so I could add the functionality. Any goal from the "master" profile is not copied to the partners profile. profile 1: include traffic from hostname ^partner1\. profile 2: include traffic from hostname ^partner2\. Is it (very) bad to fake the hostname? Are there better approaches? Or what improvements could you think of? UPDATE: I'm looking primarily for a solid data structure inside Google Analytics regardless of the flash implementation. The only limitations: We need an aggregated view across all partners Our partners need to have access to their subset of data We want to identify the partner by a custom partnerID, not the domain

• BizTalk 2009 - BizTalk Server Best Practice Analyser

  The BizTalk Server Best Practices Analyser  allows you to carry out a configuration level verification of your BizTalk installation, evaluating the deployed configuration but not modifying or tuning anything that it finds. The Best Practices Analyser uses "reading and reporting" to gather data from different sources, such as: Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) classes SQL Server databases Registry entries When I first ran the analyser I got a number of errors, if you get any errors these should all be acted upon to resolve them, you should then run the scan again and see if any thing else is reported that needs acting upon. As you can see in the image above, the initial issue that jumped out to me was that the SQL Server Agent was not started. The reasons for this was absent mindedness - this run was against my development PC and I don't have SQL/BizTalk actively running unless I am using them.  Starting the agent service and running the scan again gave me the following results: This resolved most of the issues for me, but next major issue to look at was that there was no tracking host running.  You can also see that I was still getting an error with two of the SQL jobs.  The problem here was that I had not yet configured these two SQL jobs.  Configuring the backup and purge jobs and then starting the tracking host before running the scan again gave: This had cleared all the critical issues, but I did stil have a number of warnings.  For example on this report I was warned that the BizTalk Message box is hosted on the BizTalk Server.  While this is known to be less than ideal, it is as I expected on my development environment where I have installed Visual Studio, SQL and BizTalk on my laptop and I was happy to ignore this and other similar warnings. In your case you should take a look at any warnings you receive and decide what you want to do about each of them in turn.

• intermittent DNS problems

  How would I go about tracking this issue down? One of my websites has been up for years without issue. We're using Godaddy's nameservers for our domain. Lately in the past two weeks, I've noticed that once from home on my Cox cable connection, I could not connect to the site... it said the domain could not be resolved. I checked downforeveryoneorjustme.com, and it said it was fine. The "outage" lasted maybe five minutes (through a reboot too, and I'm on a mac FWIW) and then it started working again. Then it happened again this week, but from our office on a different Cox connection. Then it happened again from the office, but for a different domain. I called Cox during one outage, and the tech there could resolve the domain without a problem. When these outages are occurring, I can issue "host mydomain.com" and get "domain not found", but using "host mydomain.com 8.8.8.8" will resolve normally. Where do I start? We're getting reports now that our customers are experiencing it too.

• ODI - Creating a Repository in a 12c Pluggable Database

  To install ODI 11g into an Oracle 12c pluggable database, one way is to connect using a TNS string to the pluggable database service that is executing. For example when I installed my master repository, I used a JDBC URL such as; jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=mydbserver)(PORT=1522)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=PDBORA12.US.ORACLE.COM)))   I used the above approach rather than the host:port:sid which is a common mechanism many users use to quickly get up and going. Below you can see the repository creation wizard in action, I used the 11g release and simply installed the master and work repository into my pluggable database. Be wise with your repository IDs, I simply used the default, but you should be aware that these are key in larger deployments. The database in 12c has much more tighter control on users and resources, so just getting the user creating with sufficient resource on tablespaces etc in 12c was a little more work. Once you have the repositories up and running, then the fun starts using the 12c features. More to come.

• Mirror virtualized development environment

  I work alone in some iOS projects in a local environment. I have been thinking in a way to be able to share my development environment between my Mac Mini and my MacBook. I mostly work at home in the Mini but sometimes I need to do a demo or work outside and I would like to have the development environment mirrored in both. I have think in using a virtual machine (via VirtualBox) with just my development tools instaled. Then I could synchronize that VM with some software between both computers so I will always have the exact environment no matter what computer I use. Is there any good reason not do do this way? I have not used Virtualization to much so I have no background on the subject. My basic setup will be: Mac Mini: i7 dual Core, 8Gb. OSX Mountain Lion Host OS: MacBook: 2.4 Core 2 Duo. 4Gb. OSX Lion Host OS. Virtual Box with Mountain Lion guest OS in both machines. XCode5, Simulator.

• Drivers for NVIDIA 520M not working in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am aware that this is nominally a duplicate question, however I've read the other questions and haven't been able to resolve my problem after many hours and attempts, so please don't delete it. Additionally, it seems like many answers to the other questions are specifically dependent on certain situations. My situation being different from the others I found represented, here's my question. Until last night, I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed with Wubi, and it ran ok, though slowly and with occasional hangs. So I partitioned the drive and installed 12.04 in its own partition. Now when I start it, I am stuck using 2D. I believe this is an NVIDIA bug. My NVIDIA card is a GT 520M and my machine has Optimus. Additional Drivers only displays my wireless driver. Going to System Settings Details Graphics shows Driver:Unknown, Experience:Standard. I downloaded the driver from the NVIDIA website, and ran the installer with no errors, except that the "distribution-provided pre-install script failed". After rebooting, my screen was stuck at 640X480, which was fixed by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf However, I still was stuck in 2D, and nothing else had changed either. A thread suggested something called Bumblebee. I tried that, and when I ran optirun firefoxI got a frozen blank screen. Following another suggestion, I checked the BIOS to try and disable Optimus. I found and ran myriad other commands to try and fix the problem and nothing changed. Now I have just done a clean re-install of Ubuntu. From there, I: Installed all the updates Downloaded the NVIDIA driver Installed it Got screen stuck at 640X480, fixed in xorg.conf. To recap the problem: I can't get the NVIDIA drivers working I am stuck using 2D I'm an idiot I think if the first one is solved, the solution to the second will naturally follow. If you need me to provide any other information, I'd be happy to. • What language should I use for making a cross platform library?

  I want to build a SyncML parsing library (no UI) which should be able to build up messages based on information provided by the host application, fed in by the library's methods. Also, the library should to be able to do callbacks to methods in the host application. I want to be able to compile this and have it available on as many platforms as possible: Windows, Windows Phone 7 OS, OSX, iOS, Linux, Android, BlackBerry. Basically as many platforms as possible. The priority is to have this available on mobile devices. Questions: What setup should I use? (programming languages, compilers, IDE etc.) How would I compile this library for these different platforms and how would I connect to it? Any other info? e.g. articles that cover the subject of cross-platform development? I haven't done this sort of a cross-platform project before, so any available information to put me in the right direction would be welcomed. Myself, I have a background in C#/.NET and Objective-C.

  Yesterday I had faced error when I was connecting SQL Server using 127.0.0.1. I had immediately checked if SQL Server is working perfectly by connecting to it by specifiing my local box computer. While I was doing this suddenly I realize that it is indeed interesting to know how many different way we can connect to SQL Server which is installed in the local box. I created list of 5 different way but I am sure there are many more ways and I would like to document there here. Here is my setup. I am attempting to connect to the default instance of SQL Server from the same system where it is installed. • Debugging .NET 2.0 assembly from unmanaged code in VS2010?

  I’ve run into a serious snag trying to debug a .NET 2.0 assembly that is called from unmanaged code in Visual Studio 2010. I maintain a host of components that using COM interop and custom .NET runtime hosting and ever since installing Visual Studio 2010 I’ve been utterly blocked by VS 2010’s inability to apparently debug .NET 2.0 assemblies when launching through unmanaged code. Here’s what I’m actually doing (simplified scenario to demonstrate): I have a .NET 2.0 assembly that is compiled for COM Interop Compile project with .NET 2.0 target and register for COM Interop Set a breakpoint in the .NET component in one of the class methods Instantiate the .NET component via COM interop and call method The result is that the COM call works fine but the debugger never triggers on the breakpoint. If I now take that same assembly and target it at .NET 4.0 without any other changes everything works as expected – the breakpoint set in the assembly project triggers just fine. The easy answer to this problem seems to be “Just switch to .NET 4.0” but unfortunately the application and the way the runtime is actually hosted has a few complications. Specifically the runtime hosting uses .NET 2.0 hosting and apparently the only reliable way to host the .NET 4.0 runtime is to use the new hosting APIs that are provided only with .NET 4.0 (which all by itself is lame, lame, lame as once again the promise of backwards compatibility is broken once again by .NET). So for the moment I need to continue using the .NET 2.0 hosting APIs due to application requirements. I’ve been searching high and low and experimenting back and forth, posted a few questions on the MSDN forums but haven’t gotten any hints on what might be causing the apparent failure of Visual Studio 2010 to debug my .NET 2.0 assembly properly when called from un-managed code. Incidentally debugging .NET 2.0 targeted assemblies works fine when running with a managed startup application – it seems the issue is specific to the unmanaged code starting up. My particular issue is with custom runtime hosting which at first I thought was the problem. But the same issue manifests when using COM Interop against a .NET 2.0 assembly, so the hosting is probably not the issue. • Practical Approaches to increasing Virtualization Density-Part 1

  Happy New year everyone!. Let me kick start the year off by talking about Virtualization density.  What is it?The number of virtual servers that a physical server can support and it's increase from the prior physical infrastructure as a percentage. Why is it important?This is important because the density should be indicative of how well the server is getting consumed?So what is wrong ?Virtualization density fails to convey the "Real usage" of a server.  Most of the hypervisor based O/S Virtualization  evangelists take pride in the fact that they are now running a Virtual Server farm of X machines compared to a Physical server farm of Y (with Y less than X obviously). The real question is - has your utilization of the server really increased or not.  In an internal study that was conducted by one of the top financial institution - the utilization of servers only went up by 15% from 30 to 45. So, this really means that just by increasing virtualization density one will not be achieving the goal of using up the servers in their server farm better.  I will write about what the possible approaches are to increase virtualization density in the next entry.

• How to start a task before networking?

  I've written an upstart task that modifies /etc/network/interfaces. (Actually a file sourced into it.) Which start on condition do I need to declare to let my task run before any networking jobs? I've tried start on starting networking, but that's apparently too late. When I log in after booting I can see that the changes were written, but obviously they are not used: the new config states a static IP, but the boot process waits for a non-existing DHCP server (old config) to time out. I've also tried start on starting network-interface INTERFACE=eth0, which didn't work either. IIRC there was an error in the log that the change couldn't be written. Background: I need a VM template that can be cloned and the clones configured through a script. Among other settings, I need to give them a static IP address to access them from the host. I use guestfish to write a config file to one of the virtual disks and let a script apply these settings to the system. I don't want that disk to contain an actual system settings file. I can't modify /etc directly, because that disk is shared (copy-on-write/diff) among the clones and guestfish apparently doesn't support that type of image. I could also let them use DHCP and setup a server that assigns IP by MAC, but I'm afraid of the complexity. I could also add just another virtual disk for configuration files, but if possible I'd prefer to store settings directly on the system disk image. Used software: Ubuntu Server 12.04, VirtualBox. The configuration modifier is a self written ruby script.

• Restrict SSL access for some paths on a apache2 server

  I wanted to allow access to www.mydomain.com/login through ssl only. E.g.: Whenever someone accessed http://www.mydomain.com/login, I wanted him to be redirect to https://www.mydomain.com/login so it's impossible for him/her to access that site without SSL. I accomplished this by adding the following lines to the virtual host for www.mydomain.com on port 80 in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^80$ RewriteRule ^/login(.*)$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}/login$1 [L,R] RewriteLog "/var/log/apache2/rewrite.log" Now, I want to restrict using SSL for www.mydomain.com. That means, whenever someone accessed https://www.mydomain.com, I want him to be redirected to http://www.mydomain.com (for performance reasons). I tried this by adding the following lines to the virtual host of www.mydomain.com on port 443 in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default-ssl: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^443$ RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://%{SERVER_NAME}/$1 [L,R] RewriteLog "/var/log/apache2/rewrite.log" But when I now try to access www.mydomain.com/login, I get an error message that the server has caused to many redirects. That does make sense. Obviously, the two RewriteRules are playing ping-pong against each other. How could I work around this?

• Securing ClickOnce hosted with Amazon S3 Storage

  Well, since my post on hosting ClickOnce with Amazon S3 Storage, I've received quite a few emails asking how to secure the deployment. At the time of this post I regret to say that there is no way to secure your ClickOnce deployment hosted with Amazon S3. The S3 storage is secured by ACL meaning that a username and password will have to be provided before access. The Amazon CloudFront, which sits on top of S3, allows you to apply security settings to your CloudFront distribution by Applying an encryption to the URL. Restricting by IP. The problem with the CloudFront is that the encryption of the URL is mandatory. ClickOnce does not provide a way to pass the "Amazon Public Key" to the CloudFront URL (you probably can if you start editing the XML and HTML files ClickOnce generate but that defeats the porpose of ClickOnce all together). What would be nice is if Amazon can allow users to restrict by IP addresses or IP Blocks. I'd sent them an email and received a response that this is something they are looking into...I won't hold my breadth though. Alternative I suggest you look at Rack Space Cloud hosting http://www.rackspacecloud.com they have very competitive pricing and recently started hosting Windows Virtual Servers. What you can do is rent a virtual server, setup IIS to host your ClickOnce applications. You can then use IIS security setting to restrict what IP/Blocks can access your ClickOnce payloads. Note: You don't really need Windows Server to host ClickOnce. Any web server can do. If you are familiar with Linux you can run that VM with rackspace for half the price of Windows. • Problems Using CloudFlare On Blogger

  Here's the situation. I got a TLD for my blogger blog and set it up using the instructions from blogger. Blogger asks to: Add two CNAME records. For the first CNAME, where it says Name, Label or Host enter "www" and where it says Destination, Target orPoints To enter "ghs.google.com" . For the second CNAME, enter "NHRILA4K2RJG" as the Name and "gv-GQMUMYGHAMJWECXFLJXVXABIV23C55JIPNIAVD5IGFSXT653O5GA.domainverify.googlehosted.com." I did that on my domain host, and everything was working smoothly. Here's the things that happened: Typing myblog.blogspot.com in the address bar brought me to my new address www.mynewaddress.tld Typing my newaddress.tld brings me to www.mynewaddress.tld Now, I went through the instruction to setup CloudFlare and did everything as required. I saw that CloudFlare is active and working on my TLD www.mynewaddress.tld, however, when I am typing the blogspot address, i.e. myblog.blogspot.com, it's showing a notice that the blog is not hosted on blogger and that I should click "yes" to get redirected to the new website. However, the blog is still on blogger. I think the problem might be with this particular CNAME record Google asks to create, which I did not find imported to the CloudFlare nameservers: For the second CNAME, enter "NHRILA4K2RJG" as the Name and "gv-GQMUMYGHAMJWECXFLJXVXABIV23C55JIPNIAVD5IGFSXT653O5GA.domainverify.googlehosted.com." So I create that CNAME and added it to the CloudFlare panel. My question is - is that what will help Google determine that my blog is still hosted on Blogger? If so, should I turn off CloudFlare for that particular CNAME record or turn it on? Any help is very much appreciated :)
