  I use a program called YUMI from pendrivelinux.com to load all my Linux distros from a USB thumbdrive. They just updated their installer to support the newest 12.04.1 released a couple days ago. It's looking for a ISO name of ubuntu-12.04.*dvd-i386.iso but the file I downloaded from the Ubuntu homepage is named ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso. Can I simply change the name of my ISO, or is there a difference in the ISO?

• Wireless network unavailable, no networks found after Windows update

  Old Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with Linksys Wireless G network adapter card (WPC54G v2). Wireless connection was working fine. Then I ran a bunch of windows updates, I think the last one was the recent .NET 3.5 service pack update. Now wireless networks won't connect. Using windows to manage wireless, no networks show up. I'm typing right now on another laptop where wireless is working fine. I've restarted router & Dell laptop several times. Tried to Repair wireless connection and refresh network list. Also restarted DHCP and WZC service, all to no avail. I then uninstalled .NET 3.5 SP (don't remember number) and .NET 3.0 SP2. I don't remember all the windows updates that I just ran because I haven't used this laptop in a while so had to catch up on some updates.

  The default login for SSH on the droboshare is a user name of root with a password of giveit2me. With the command passwd the password can be changed. However I can't find anyway to change the default user name. Since any Unix based has a user named root this kinda bugs me as a minor security issue. Does anyone know how to change the user name for droboshare SSH logins? The SSH program being used is a variant of dropbear if that is any help.

• wireless connection will not authenticate with verizon adsl router

  hello, i have ubunto 10.10 running on an old dell xps system. when i set it up i had internet through my home wifi router on my cable modem. now the dell is at another home with an ADSL wifi router from verizon. we have entered the ssid and wep key as given from the adsl router. the other windows computers connect with the wep key and automatic detection. the ubuntu dell detects the connection but does not autenticate, keeps asking for wep key. i have tried diferent settings regarding wep, wpa, wep with hex and asci, still no results. what am i doing wrong? help please. thanks.

• Synaptics touchpad scroll doesn't work on many applications

  The Synaptics touchpad in my new laptop doesn't scroll at all in a number of applications, including Steam and Zune. I've narrowed the problem down to Synaptics not sending mouse wheel messages, but rather manipulating scroll bars. I'm only looking into one-finger side-of-touchpad scrolling, not two-finger scrolling. Is there a way to make it send wheel messages so that it is compatible with all applications? • Wireless internet connection connects but internet does not work (no packets received). Wired does.

  When I connect my PC via ethernet cable to my ADSL router it works fine. When I connect via Wireless it connects and the internet will work for a random amount of time and then stop working. It stays connected with a strong signal but no packets are received. My laptop/iphone are right next to it and wireless works fine. If I open the Wireless USB status, it says it is connected to my SSID with full strength (54 mps - I am 3 meteres away from my router) and the activty shows as Packets 594 SENT and 105 RECEIVED (this goes up VERY slowly) I have tried the following: Turned off anitvirus and firewall completely. Tested the wifi signal- I am writing this on my laptop which is next to my PC and also has full wifi strength. Tried a different wireless adapter - I dug out an old PCI wireless card - it does the exact same thing. Compared all wireless settings to my laptop. I can ping google.com and it replies (sometimes with packet loss) When I reboot the PC it will connect for a minute or two (random time) and then just stops again. I tried Firefox, IE etc. no joy I have updated all latest versions (Netgear WG111v2) and drivers Checked Event Log - nothing unusual Ping the router (and even connect as admin for the few minutes when the internet does work) Changed the MTU down to 1200 using DrTCP Checked Device Manager for conflicts - none. I ping the router from the PC (192.168.0.10 - 192.168.0.1) and it replies with 4 packets. BUT, on my router admin page (which I access via http on my laptop wirelessly) - if I ping 192.168.0.10 all packets timeout (pinging my laptop 192.168.0.12 works fine) My router admin page shows the leased IP address for 192.168.0.10 (ie it is definitely talking to the router initially) Now I am out of ideas - please help. I think it is an OS/Software issue as I have tried 2 different wireless adapaters (PCI and USB) with the same result but all other wireless devices work fine around mine). It's not the firewall. It is getting assigned an IP address correctly (my PC gets 192.168.0.10, my laptop is .12) It is assigned by DHCP. As soon as I plug in the ethernet cable it all works fine. Repairing the adapter sometimes helps but it will always stop working after a random time. The wireless adapter always shows as connected with Excellent signal but the internet does not work. I am running Windows XP SP3 and have tried a Netgear WG111v2 USB adapter. Thanks in advance! UPDATE: The internet seems to be working, it is just either sending packets too small or slow to work (some small pages load bits of them very slowly but then hang). Here are the basic specs: Dell PowerEdge R510 with up to 12 Hot Swap HDDs,LED Intel Xeon E5649 2.53GHz, 12M Cache, 5.86 GT/s QPI, 6 core (Quantity of 2) 48GB Memory (6x8GB), 1333MHz Dual Ranked RDIMMs for 2 Processors, Optimized PERC H700 Integrated RAID Controller, 1GB NV Cache 300GB 15K RPM SA SCSI 6Gbps 3.5in Hotplug Hard Drive (Quantity of 4) 600GB 15K RPM SA SCSI 6Gbps 3.5in Hotplug Hard Drive (Quantity of 6) My first thought was to use 3 arrays. OS - Raid 1 - (2)300GB T-Log - Raid 1 (2)300GB DB - Raid 5 (5) 600GB Backup - (1) 600GB - non-raided. However, I could also do the following after purchasing one more drive for backup. OS and T-Log - Raid 10 - (4)300GB DB - Raid 10 (6)600GB The hard drive space is not an issue as the databases are not that large. I'm just trying to optimize the speed of the applications using these databases. So, what would you guys recommend?

• No BIOS, no video after ubuntu updates

  Hello, I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Precision T3500 Desktop machine. Last week, when I ran the regular updates, upon restart my video disappeared. I could not even see the Dell startup screen or enter the BIOS. When I swapped out the video card (for an older one I had around), the system worked again. So Dell sent me a replacement video card. I put that in and everything appeared to be working again. Then, I ran updates again, and the same thing happened. Replacement video card appears to be broken. No startup messages, no BIOS, no video at all. Does anyone know how Ubuntu updates might be ruining the video cards? The card that keeps "breaking" is an FirePro MV2260. Thanks, RC

• Forcing Remote machine to serve RDP (or similar) session

  Due to a Dell/Nvidia design flaw in the Dell Inspiron 1420 series, my laptop no longer shows a display. I am looking for a solution to view it remotely. I have used it via RDP in the past (not for a year though) however for what ever reason I can no longer RDP, it could have been disabled some how. However, I'm on the same LAN, I can ping it, and know its login creditials. Is there a way I can hack into it remotely to force it to serve a RDP session or an alternative? • Windows 7 does not recognize hdmi audio output

  I recently upgraded to Windows 7 on a Dell 545 MT with audio/video output via nVidia 9800 GTX+ to a flat screen television. I have installed/uninstalled/reinstalled all the most recent drivers from nVidia & realtek, but the machine will not recognize the hdmi output as a sound device (as it did previously in Vista). I troubleshot the problem with Dell for over an hour and was then directed to their software specialists who want $130 to fix the issue! Can anyone offer some insights on this? I've searched nVidia and Windows 7 forums w/o success and would really like to get sound coming back through my tv speakers. Many Thanks.

• Planning development when academic research is involved

  Dear fellow programmers, how do you do "software planning" when academic research is involved? And, on a side note, how do you convince your boss that writing software is not like building a house and it's more like writing a novel? The gory details are below. I am in charge of a small dev team working in a research lab. We started developing a software with the purpose of going public one day (i.e. sell and make money off that). Such software depends on, amongst other things, at least two independent research lines: that is, there are at least two Ph.D. candidates that will, hopefully, one day come out with a working implementation of what we need. The main software depends also on other, more concrete resources that we as developers can take care of: graphics rendering, soft bodies deformation, etc. My boss asked me to write the specifications, requirements AND a bloody GANTT chart of the entire project. Faced with the fact that I don't have a clue about the research part, and that such research is fundamental for the software, he said "make assumptions." For the clarity of the argument, he is a professor whose Ph.D. students should come up with the research we need. And he comes from a strictly engineering background: plan everything first, write down specifications and only then write down code that "it's the last part". What I am doing now: I broke down the product in features; each 'feature' is, de facto, a separate product; Each feature is built on top of the previous one; Once a feature (A) has a working prototype the team can start working on the next feature (B), while QA for is being done for A (if money allows, more people can be brought in, etc.); Features that depend on research will come last: by then, hopefully, the research part will be completed (when is still a big question) ; Also, I set the team to use SCRUM for the development of 'version 1.0', due in a few months. This deadline could be set based on reasonable assumptions: we listed all required features, we counted our availability, and we gave a reasonable estimate. So my questions, again, are: How do I make my boss happy while at the same time get something out the door? How do I write specifications for something we -the developers- have no clue whether it's possible to do or not? (We still haven't decided which libraries to use for some tasks; we'll do so when we'll need to) How do I get the requirements for that, given that there are yet no clients nor investors, just lots of interests and promises? How do I get peace in the world? I am sure at least one of my questions will be answered :) ps: I am writing this anonymously since a potential investor might backfire if this is discovered. Hope you'll understand. However I must say I do not like this mentality of 'hiding the truth': this program will likely benefit many, and not being able to talk openly about this (with my name and my reputation attached) feels like censorship. But alas, I care more about your suggestions now.

• What could cause a lag in typing with WinXP?

  I'm working on a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop that has a mysterious lag in typing. You enter keystrokes and it takes a while to show up on the screen. WinXP Pro was freshly installed and the behavior is still here. Here is the weird part... I've tested the computer with the full Dell diagnostic suite, Prime95 (using UBCD4Win), and Memtest86. Everything checks out as fine. If I run a LiveCD such as UBCD4Win or Ubuntu (9.04?) then there is no typing issue. This is causing me lots of aggravation. Thoughts?

I can subclass each class in two more and then avoid the line length limit. class Stand class Walk class Punch class Crouch The new classes would be StandLeft, StandRight and so on. • Mac OS X Disk Encryption - Automation

  I want to setup a Mac Mini server with an external drive that is encrypted. In Finder, I can use the full-disk encryption option. However, for multiple users, this could become tricky. What I want to do is encrypt the external volume, then set things up so that when the machine boots, the disk is unlocked so that all users can access it. Of course permissions need to be maintained, but that goes without saying. What I'm thinking of doing is setting up a root-level launchd script that runs once on boot and unlocks the disk. The encryption keys would probably be stored in root's keychain. So here's my list of concerns: If I store the encryption keys in the system keychain, then the file in /private/var/db/SystemKey could be used to unlock the keychain if an attacker ever gained physical access to the server. this is bad. If I store the encryption keys in my user keychain, I have to manually run the command with my password. This is undesirable. If I run a launchd script with my user credentials, it will run under my user account but won't have access to the keychain, defeating the purpose. If root has a keychain (does it?) then how would it be decrypted? Would it remain locked until the password was entered (like the user keychain) or would it have the same problem as the system keychain, with keys stored on the drive and accessible with physical access? Assuming all of the above works, I've found diskutil coreStorage unlockVolume which seems to be the appropriate command, but the details of where to store the encryption key is the biggest problem. If the system keychain is not secure enough, and user keychains require a password, what's the best option?

Will it be able to power a Dell Lattitude E6500? Looking at the power supply of the laptop, it states that it is a 90W-AC Adapter. The car adapter states that it is a 60W DC - AC Power Inverter. Will this work? Do I need an DC-AC Power Inverter that is 90W or higher? I am nothing close to an electrician, please help me out. Thank you.

• Will Swift or any upcoming Apple developer tools be incompatible with .xibs? [on hold]

  I'm still letting the sudden announcement of a language change (Swift) sink in, and I'm wondering if the upcoming platform changes will still be highly compatible with using .xibs for interface development. I've used Storyboards in multiple production projects but I don't feel very productive with them, and I get tired of managing multiple storyboards, links, and xib connections for complex views. I don't see why Swift and Xcode 6 wouldn't cooperate with Xibs indefinitely if it still allows @IBOutlets and @IBActions, but I have realized that Apple purposely shuns old methodologies for the sake of doing so. If there's any reasons to turn away from xibs in iOS8 besides the use-the-new-stuff conventional wisdom, I'd like to know before its too late.

• How can create the smallest possible mirror of the archive?

  I need to create an http url at my laptop to have a Ubuntu installation begin within my laptop on a Xen environment. This is how the final thing will look like. The host and client are both going to be my laptop, I Googled and came across apt-mirror and some other packages. I do not want to archive entire 15 GB Ubuntu repositories on my machine. It is not possible to use a CD,ISO,loop mounted disk (reason mentioned below). I have tried using netboot image on local machine which failed because if you are attempting to create a virtual machine on a hardware which does not support VT virt-manager installer necessarily needs a URL of this sort http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/ Any other option to create guest OS is simply grayed out. The unfortunate part is my Ethernet connections do not work when I boot with Xen-4.0 and a pv-ops Dom0 kernel from Jeremy's tree. Which is where I have to do this work. So I have to create a URL structure which is similar to Ubuntu mirrors. So how can I do this in bare minimum so that at least the console boots and once the console comes I can do some work.
