• Network architecture when using Rackspace's Cloud

  I'm planning on launching a web application soon, and have decided on using Rackspace's Cloud offering with Debian. I'm not expecting that much traffic to start, but would rather get the architecture correct now even with the small VPSs. The thing I'm not quite sure about is how many VPSs I should get. At a minimum, I know I'll want three VPSs: Two Apache webservers One server for MySQL I'd also like: Nginx load balancer MySQL replication memcached I'm not sure where those last three processes should be running. Can the load balancer run on the same machine as the MySQL slave, or should they each run on their own machine? Does memcached run alongside the webservers or on different machines?

• Which subnet masks are valid for a subnetted Class B address?

  Yes, this is a school question, and yes I already know the correct possible answers (supposedly), so I'm not going to bother posting them. Instead, I just want to understand the meaning of this question. I know what class B addresses are, and what valid class B subnet addresses are. I guess one way to define my question is to ask why the answer "255.255.0.0" is wrong, necessarily? That seems to defy my understanding, or else some part of my brain is just not registering the question correctly. Thanks in advance.

• Multi Monitor setup goes crazy after locking/unlocking Vista machine

  Give me a 10-blade quad-processor quad-core Opteron centre and ask me to configure failover/load balancing and I'd be happy to, but the following problem has got me completely stumped. My Vista Business Professional machine, running Ultramon, has three monitors attached. When I lock the machine (to go to the delicious cafe around the corner), the monitor layout stays correct. When I unlock it, I watch as all my screens flicker (as they are being re-configured), and Vista chooses some crazy layout for the monitors. The most recent one is below, but it's never consistant. Any ideas what might cause this? It's Vista Business, with UltraMon 3.0 (exiting Ultramon makes no difference).

• Creating GPT partitions on EFI raw disk using diskpart

  I've got a raw, blank GPT disk for use in a UEFI system. I need to create the partitions on it using diskpart. The only tutorial I've found so far is for diskpart.efi, which I believe is slightly different from the command-line diskpart. MS guide to GPT partitions with diskpart.efi Also the guide says to create a MSR of 32MB, but for a disk= 16GB I know it needs to be 128MB. I'm happy doing it with diskpart, just want to be sure I understand the fundamentals. I'm planning on installing, in this order: ESP partition, size 102 MB (create partition esp size=102) MSR partition, size 128 MB (create partition msr size=128) data partition, the remaining space (approx 460GB) Is this the correct thing to do, or is there anything I'm missing?

• "Accumulate" buffer results in XNA4?

  I'm trying to simulate a "heightmap" buffer in XNA4.0 but the results don't look correct. From what I understand, here are the steps to reach there: Pass height buffer + current entity's heightmap Generate a stencil and update the height buffer Render sprite+stencil For now, I'm just trying to get the height buffer thing to work. So here's the problem. Inside the draw loop, I do the following: Create a new render target & set it Draw the heightmap with a sprite batch(no shaders) graphicsDevice.SetRenderTarget(null) Draw the rendertarget with SpriteBatch I expected to see all entities' heightmaps. But only the last entity's heightmap is visible. Any hints on what I'm doing wrong? • Frequent Disconnects with an Intel 3945ABG Wireless Card

  I'm brand new to Ubuntu, and I really love it so far, but one issue I have encountered is that my WLAN is disconnecting about every 5-10 minutes. Often times the connection is repaired automatically, but sometimes the network manager will repeatedly reject my encryption key (which of course is correct). Occasionally after a disconnect, the wireless network fails to show up at all. The only way I can solve this seems to be by completely restarting Ubuntu or connecting with a USB wireless adapter. I am using WPA/WPA2 encryption, which I've read can cause problems with network-manager, but I experience the exact same issues with WICD. I should probably note that I've not experienced any of these issues using Windows 7 on my other partition. I have a hunch that there may be a better driver out there for my card, but I have no idea how to go about searching for it or installing it. • VirtuaWin shows Visual Studio 2010 in all Desktops

  I'm using VirtuaWin in Windows 7 to have virtual desktop functionality and I think this program is awesome. There's one small issue, though: on the computer at work, when moving to another desktop it hides all windows in the current desktop, except any windows of Visual Studio 2010. This means that VS 2010 shows up in all desktops, while for all other windows, VirtuaWin applies the correct behavior. The strange thing is that this issue happens on one computer only; on the others I have it works OK. I have checked the Window Rules section and nothing seems strange in there. Is anyone else experiencing this kind of problem? Any ideas on how to solve it?

• A new CAPTCHA using sentences?

  I was just thinking about how recaptcha is getting harder when I thought about another posible solution. Images won't last forever so we will need something else some day - like human logic or emotion. Google and others are trying grouping images by category (find the image that doesn't belong) but that requires a large amount of images and doesn't work for the blind. Anyway, what if a massive collection of text was gathered (public-domain books from each language) and a sentence was shown to the user with 1 (or 2) words that were a select box of choices? Only computers that knew correct English/Spanish/German grammar would be able to tell which of the words belonged in the sentence. Would there be any problems with this approach? I would assume that it would be easy enough for anyone that knew the language that the sentense was displayed in to figure out the answer easier than trying to read the reCAPTCHA text. Plus, storing an insane number of sentences would only take a couple gigabytes of space and wouldn't take anywhere near the CPU time creating images/audio takes. In other words, anyone could host their own captcha system with minimal impact on system performance. Is there a problem with this approach?   I have a problem with the window title in the Terminal window on OS X: Start Terminal. Window title is "bash" Type "ssh external" to connect to an external server. Window title is "user@external:~" Type "exit". I am now back at my local machine, but the window title still says "user@external:~". How do I make the window title return to "bash", which I assume would be correct since I have logged out of the external server and returned to my local machine? • Hotspotting - tying Visualization into Other applications

  AutoVue 20 included our first step towards providing a rich hotspotting capability that will allow visualization capabilities to be very tightly integrated into a wide range of applications. The idea is to have a close link between the visual representation of an object or place, and the business objects associated with that object or place. We've been working with our partner Enigma to enable this capability in their parts catalogue - the screenshot above shows what it looks like - the image on the right is a trimmed down version of AutoVue displaying a drawing of the various parts in an interactive way - when you click on item '6' in the AutoVue drawing, the appropriate item is highlighted in the parts catalogue - making it easy to select the parts you need, and to ensure that the correct parts are selected. The integration works in both directions - when you select a part in the part catalogue, the appropriate part is highlighted in the drawing as well. To get slightly technical for a moment, this is a simple javascript integration - the external application provides a javascript callback that AutoVue calls whenever an item is clicked on, and AutoVue provides a javascript function to call when an item is selected in the external application. There are also direct java APIs available. This makes it easy to tie AutoVue into many types of applications - you can imagine in an asset lifecycle management application being able to click on the appropriate asset in a drawing to create a work-order, instead of finding the right asset ID to enter. Or being able to click on a part or sub-assembly to trigger a change order in a product lifecycle management application. We're pretty excited about the possibilities that this capability opens up, and plan on expanding on it a lot in the future. Would this be useful in your enterprise applications?   I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory domain controller with domain madhurmoss.com I have a Linux box which is trying to connect to LDAP (389) on above box, which is failing. Upon inspection in Wireshark, I see a bind request with following query sAMAccountName=Administrator,DC=madhurmoss,DC=com and result with invalid Credentials 80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C0903A9, comment: AcceptSecurityContext error, data 52e, v1db0 I want it to connect it through Administrator which lies in CN=Administrator,CN=Users,DC=madhurmoss,DC=com The supplied credentials are correct. I believe the query sAMAccountName=Administrator,DC=madhurmoss,DC=com is wrong. Can anyone guide me what could be wrong ?

  I'm currently developing a web service using ODSI through Oracle Workshop for WebLogic (ex AquaLogic). I created a datasource on weblogic using the driver "Oracle thin driver 10g", the test succeed on WebLogic. (My Database is Oracle 10 10.2.0.1.0) The problem occours when I try to create the Phisical Data Service in the Oracle Workshop. I choose the following options: Data source type = Relational Data source = [THE CORRECT NAME OF THE SOURCE SET ON WEBLOGIC] Database type = ??? Aqualogic, doesn't allow me to select the database type. I guess is a problem related to the driver set on weblogic... but I ain't sure.Does someone know the nature of my problem ? Tnx

• nginx php-fpm uploaded files have nginx ownership after executing move uploaded file

  I have a problem with php 5.3.6 using PHP-FPM and file uploads. My Nginx runs as user nginx PHP-FPM uses pools configured for each vhost. For example a user: test group : test runs one pool. When the php file uploads to temp file it is owned by user test. After move_uploaded_file is executed by php script it is owned by nginx :/. The reason for this could be the fact that the original upload file script does an exec('/usr/bin/php do_uploadedfiles.php') which does the actual moving. I do not know if the change in ownership to web server is the correct behaviour. Is there a way in PHP to change the ownership back to the user I want? Maybe make exec "run as"?

• Silverlight Cream Monday WP7 App Review # 1

  I'm going to try something here... if it seems useful, I'll continue, if it doesn't, I'll stop... so give me feedback! There are *lots* of Apps in the WP7 Marketplace, and heaven help me, but the Marketplace sucks for finding stuff. I won't rehash what's already been said in the blogs, but I agree with one and all. I went out last Saturday to find 2 apps that I knew were released, and couldn't do so on my device. Even in the Zune app, it took quite a while to find them... ok, I'll back off a bit, because I just found out I can do 'Search' now if I know the name... I didn't think that was working before. So my thought is on Monday (like today), I will post a review of 5 apps/games I either use or have played with on my device. These are strictly my opinions, you understand, but hey... it's better than a poke in the eye with an iPhone! A few disclaimers:     Feel free to write me about your app and tell me about it. While it would be very cool to receive a whole bunch of xap files to review, at this point, for technical reasons, I'm unable to side-load my device. Since I plan on only doing this one day a week, and only 5, I may never get caught up, so if you send me some info, be patient. Re: games ... remember I'm old... I'm from the era of Colossal Cave and Zork. Duke-Nukem 2D and Captain Comic were awesome. I don't own an XBOX or any other game system, so take game reviews from my perspective -- who knows, it may be refreshing :) I won't pay for an app or game just to try it. If you expect me to test-drive your app, it's going to have to have a Free Trial. In this Issue:   Jingo! is the first app I bought, just to see what the experience was like. It's very much like a game we used to play in school in the Army in 1971 on paper we passed around. Sort of a cross between hangman and Mastermind, you try to figure out the hidden word in 5 tries. You get really good at 5-letter words after a while. I like this because you have to think, and you're not pressured by a clock Jingo! is by James Furdell and is $1.99 I reviewed René Schulte's Pictures Lab a while back, and have not changed my mind. This is an excellent app for playing with any photo on your device... one you've just taken, one you've synced from your PC, or one you've saved from email. I like this because you can get some cool effects for your photos, and it just works. Pictures Lab is by Schulte Software Development and is $1.99 Since I work as a consultant, and from home, I wanted something I could track my time with. I've test-driven all the contenders I could find so far on the phone, and so far I like ONTRACK! the best. If asked, I have some suggestions, but it's probably just the way I work or think. What I do like is I can tap a project to start/stop/restart a counter, and at the end of the day it shows me how much time I've been working. If there's a way to make an adjustment in case you forget to tap the counter, I don't know how to do it, and that's my biggest complaint. I like this because you can get a daily readout which you can also email as a spreadsheet. The daily results display is very good. ONTRACK! is by Qmino and is $2.99 Remember Item 4 above... I've been playing guitar for 48 years... obviously since before the invention of 'tuners', so I'm not as dependent upon these as some folks are. I've tried some in the past and have always felt I can do just as good by ear (I have perfect relative pitch). So, I gave this app by András Velvárt a dance just to see how it works, and it is surprisingly good. If you're used to one of the stage tuners this may take a little getting used to, but it does the job. The difference with this one is there is no real 'null' point inside which you can think your guitar is in tune. The soundwave stays visible on the device, and if it's moving to the right, your string is flat, if it's moving to the left, your string is sharp. Getting it exact might be tricky, but it is exact! If you need to rely on a tuner, this is a good choice in my opinion, exactly because of the sensitivity.. tune up with this and you're dead-on. Guitar Tuner is by Kinabalu Innovation Limited and is $0.99 Popper 2 is the WP7 version of a wildly popular game by Bill Reiss named Dr. Popper. You can get a trial, or you can now get a free lite version of the game. Popper 2 is a fast-paced bubble breaker game. I find it something fun to play when I just want to buzz out, but maybe the best review is that my daughter didn't want to give my phone back when I showed it to her, and always wants to grab my phone to play 'that game'. • Page Titles - Including gender of a fashion product in page titles?

  I need a bit of help to decide whether it is worth including gender in page titles. In the webmaster tools: I looked at our search queries that include "women", and they account for 9% of our total search queries for the site. I am wondering if it is the right way assess the benefit of including "woman" or "men" in page titles, looking at it with existing results pointing to us already? Is there another tool that I can check the actual queries that may not include us in search results? Like google insights maybe? http://www.google.com/insights/search/#q=shoes%2Cshoes%20for%20women&cmpt=q So it looks like 1.1% of searches for "shoes" are also "shoes for women" is that correct? It's difficult to find the point of problem, when occurring errors. scenario2 decouples queue1 and queue2. It's easy to find the point of problem, when occurring errors. We can change BT or emule's setting so that the folder for downloading points to the new hard drive, but then, what if emule haven't finished downloading for some files that are hard to find, and it is 92% done... in that case, we would like to keep the old setting so that when the last 8% arrives, it can go into the correct file. (and same for BT, if we haven't finished some file or if we want to seed something later). So is there a good way to let BT or emule point to 2 hard drives, or somehow let the new hard drive "merge" into the existing hard drive / folder?

• Purpose of "new" keyword

  The new keyword in languages like Java, Javascript, and C# creates a new instance of a class. This syntax seems to have been inherited from C++, where new is used specifically to allocate a new instance of a class on the heap, and return a pointer to the new instance. In C++, this is not the only way to construct an object. You can also construct an object on the stack, without using new - and in fact, this way of constructing objects is much more common in C++. So, coming from a C++ background, the new keyword in languages like Java, Javascript, and C# seemed natural and obvious to me. Then I started to learn Python, which doesn't have the new keyword. In Python, an instance is constructed simply by calling the constructor, like: f = Foo() At first, this seemed a bit off to me, until it occurred to me that there's no reason for Python to have new, because everything is an object so there's no need to disambiguate between various constructor syntaxes. But then I thought - what's really the point of new in Java? Why should we say Object o = new Object();? Why not just Object o = Object();? In C++ there's definitely a need for new, since we need to distinguish between allocating on the heap and allocating on the stack, but in Java all objects are constructed on the heap, so why even have the new keyword? The same question could be asked for Javascript. In C#, which I'm much less familiar with, I think new may have some purpose in terms of distinguishing between object types and value types, but I'm not sure. Regardless, it seems to me that many languages which came after C++ simply "inherited" the new keyword - without really needing it. It's almost like a vestigial keyword. We don't seem to need it for any reason, and yet it's there. Question: Am I correct about this? Or is there some compelling reason that new needs to be in C++-inspired memory-managed languages like Java, Javascript and C#?

• Weird outline numbering in Microsoft Word 2008

  This is quite a weird question, as I think I am asking the opposite of what most people want to try and achieve with outline numbering in Microsoft Word. The outline numbering associated with the styles "Heading 1" and "Heading 2" are fine and working as normal, but the outline numbering associated with all the heading styles from "Heading 3" onwards are broken. Here is a summary of how they look: 1 1.1 1.2 2 2.1 3 3.1 1.1.1 1.1.2 4 4.1 1.1.3 So you can see that while the first two headings are numbering correctly down the document, the third level heading doesn't restart and it doesn't have the correct 1st and 2nd level numbering - they all have '1.1' as a prefix. These are all controlled by the heading styles and I have tried every combination of options in the outline numbering section of the styles. Short of building a whole new template, recreating all my custom styles and then pasting the text across, I really don't know what to do. Before I try that, does anyone know what is going on here?

• Reduce Windows DNS Service caching on Window

  I'm struggling with DNS caching issues on a Windows based LAN. I've noticed that if I change a DNS record on a domain hosted by a 3rd party nameserver, that I always seem to be the very last person to see the change happen. I can often query the domain using a service which checks propagation around the world like www.whatsmydns.net but I usually find that all other DNS servers are correct and it's only my own server which has the old IP - even 8-12 hours later. This is an issue for us as we're website developers and often making changes to DNS records so these huge delays are frustrating. It seems to be because our primary domain controller server (+Active Directory & DNS) on our LAN (which is also our local DNS server) caches records for AGES (Way beyond it's published TTL). How can I stop the Windows DNS server from caching, or reduce the caching to only an hour or so?
