• Hardware Lossless Compression for Hard Drives?

  I happened across this article about hardware based hard drive encryption and realized that not only would this give a great way to protect your data but it would also speed up the applications that we use to encrypt that data. This lead me to wonder... Would it be possible to do the same thing for compression so that all of the data is compressed or uncompressed appropriately as it is read and written to the drive? I haven't done any firmware programming in quite some time so I'm not even sure this is technically possible. If it were, however, it could probably give quite a bit more storage space to folks. What are the pros and cons of programming such an approach to be used in the firmware? G-Man

• Where to put reusable methods for access by controllers in rails

  I have several methods I call from my controllers that feel like they should be pulled out and put into a reusable class, outside of the controller. Where do people usually put this stuff? I know I can put them into my ApplicationController, but that doesn't seem to be a great solution if I think I can use these methods later in other applications. Also, I have a bunch of utility methods in my controllers that likely won't be used in other controllers, or in the future at all, but I feel like they just bloat my controller a bit. Do people usually move these out someplace for cleanliness or just end up with a huge controller? I'm coming from Java and Actionscript where I'd just create new util classes for this stuff.

• c# catch clipboard changes, wont work if form minimized to tray

  Hi .. i have a problem using the "Catch Clipboard Events code" found on this link : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/621577/clipboard-event-c/2487582#2487582 the code works great only if the form stays in the foreground, not minimized to tray BUT: if you add a notifyicon and minimize the form to tray and turn the showintaskbar to false (so that you only have an icon in the tray), the program wont catch any clipboard changes anymore ... even if you maximize the form back, it wont work again ...you have to restart the program .. any idea on how to solve this issue !? how can i catch clipboard changes, even if the form is minimized into the tray !? any help is really appreciated ... • super dealloc error using multiple table view calsses

  I am new to Iphone apps and I am trying to build a tab based app. I am attempting to have a table ontop of an image in both tabs. On tab with a table of audio links and the other tab with a table of video links. This has all gone swimmingly, I have created two viewControllers for the two tables. All the code works great apart from to get it to work I have to comment out the super dealloc in the - (void)dealloc {} in the videoTableViewController for the second tab. If I don't I get the error message: FREED(id): message numberOfSectionsInTableView: sent to freed object please help, i have no idea why it is doing this...

• Jquery JCarousel, itemLastInCallback how to change out the controls

  I am new to js and Jquery other than plug and play scripts and plugins. I have Jcarousel running great on a Ruby on Rails site and I need to use the itemLastInCallback method to change out the next and prev buttons. Basically if the end user clicks through to the last item in a carousel, the next button would become a link to the next carousel. <%= link_to (image_tag 'scroll_right.png'), @next_group % is the code I need to render in the end. So something like: if this is not the last item in the carousel button is normal jcarousel next button else <%= link_to (image_tag 'scroll_right.png'), @next_group % end is there a best way to do this? am I on the right track?

  i have some questions about python: 1- How to build .exe files from .py files? 2- How to run a program with arguments and receive the result by python code? 3- How to load .NET library in python code (or write python in VS.NET IDE [!?])? 4- is built-in integer of python 3.1 something like a string? it calculates 200! in less than one second and calculates 2^1 to 2^7036 (by a simple recursive algorithm & writing them to a text file) with a 1.75GHz cpu in 4 minuets, so if it is a string, how it can be so fast like this? is there a great difference between memory type and logical calculation of python with c++? 5- what is the best python practice? how can i be an expert?

• .Net reflection to get description of class / property etc?

  Hi, I know its unlikely but I was wondering if there is any way to get the comments (i.e. the bits after the ''') of a class or property..? I have managed to get a list of properties of a class using the PropertyInfo class but I cant find a way to get the comments / description.. I need it for a guide I am writing for the administrators of my site - it would be great if it could automatically update if new properties are added, so there is no need to worry about updating it in the future too much. I guess that it has something to do with the actual placement of the WHERE row in the query, so I tried to move it around, but without any luck. What can I do?

• How to configure web proxy for Jing

  Jing is great. But it won't start unless it can phone the mother ship. My internet access is via corporate web proxy. Jing doesn't seem to offer any way of configuring its connection to the internet. You'd think it would just use the windows internet connection settings that work for browsing, but no dice. Anyone solve this problem? Maybe there are some configuration files or registry settings that would fix this? Thanks!

It's not a feature that i normally see on most of the site i browse every day (some has export to pdf that is not great as ebook format), do you think it is feasible? I own an ebook reader and reading saved html to pdf pages is not so good. • Understanding a multilayer perceptron network

  Hi all, I'm trying to understand how to train a multilayer, however, I'm having some trouble figuring out on choosing the amount of neurons in my network. For a specific task, I have four input sources that can each input one of three states. I guess that would mean four input neurons firing either 0, 1 or 2, but as far as I'm told, input should be kept binary? Furthermore am I having some issues choosing on the amount of neurons in the hidden layer. Any comments would be great. Thanks.

• Is there anything RAD comparible to VCL?

  After years in embedded programmking, I have to develop a windows app. I dug out my old C++ builder and Delphi. These are great and the latest version costs over $1k, so I won't be going there. What I prarticularly like is the VCL (visual component library) which let's me code my own components and share them with others, plus the thousands of existing 3rd party components. I noticed that there is now also a RAD PHP form Borland too. I realzie that MSVC, QT, NetBEans, etc are good enough IDEs for RAD, _BUT_ does anything offer the ease of the Borland products for developing additional components - and does anything else have thousands to choose from? PC based? Cross-platform is good. Browser based? Free is always good ;-) I don't particularly care about the programming language.

  Hi, 1) I have a header jpeg image that spans a width of 996px that has a square logo to the left of this header. My question is that I would like to use this square logo section only and place a ahref tag so that when the user hover's over this section only, the cursor changes to a hand pointer and the user will be redirected back to the landing page. Any assistance on this would be great. 2) On this same image, I would also like to place two buttons with rollover effects, so when the user hovers over the buttons, the rollover effect takes control and then would like these buttons to also point to a href url. • Speed improvements for Perl's chameneos-redux script in the Computer Language Benchmarks Game

  Ever looked at the Computer Language Benchmarks Game, (formerly known as the Great Language Shootout)? Perl has some pretty healthy competition there at the moment. It also occurs to me that there's probably some places that Perl's scores could be improved. The biggest one is in the chameneos-redux script right now - the Perl version runs the worst out of any language : 1,626 times slower than the C baseline solution! There are some restrictions on how the programs can be made and optimized, and there is Perl's interpreted runtime penalty, but 1,626 times? There's got to be something that can get the runtime of this program way down. Taking a look at the source code and the challenge, what do you think could be done to reduce this runtime speed?

  I am working on a simple 2D openGL project. It contains a main actor you can control with the keyboard arrows. I got that to work okay. What I am wanting is something that can help explain how to make another actor object follow the main actor. Maybe a tutorial on openGL. The three main things I need to learn are the actor following, collision detection, and some kind of way to create gravity. Any good books or tutorials to help get me in the right direction would be great.

Requirements: Preserve source code history (even if only loosely via text only since all of our prior users may not be created in the TFS repository) Preserve our item tracking history (again, even if just loosely since Fortress wasn't all that great about this). Ultimately, I want some searchable history of what we have done in the past and why. I don't necessarily need all of the hooks in place tying work items to source code or anything like that, but I do need discussions and decisions associated with the work items kept around.

• Rails 3, changing a specific value in a row

  Hey Guys, This question seems ridiculously easy, but I seem to be stuck. Lets say we have a table "Books" Each Book, has a name, description, and a status. Lets say I want to create link in the show view, that when clicked, solely changes the status (to "read") for example. So far, I've tried adding a block in the controller, that says: def read @book = Book.find(params[:id]) @book.status = "Read" @book.update_attributes(params[:book]) respond_to do |format| format.html { redirect_to :back} format.xml { render :xml => @book } end end Then I've added a link to the view that is like: <%= link_to "Read", read_book_path(@book), :method = :put % This isn't working at all.   geonames.org got a web api you can use to get all the hierarchy for a city. you just enter the id and you will get the data back in xml. http://ws.geonames.org/hierarchy?geonameId=2657896 i wonder how you fetch the url with php and javascript, and which one should i use. cause the id's are in the mysql database. i will get them with php. should i use file_get_contents, curl or fopen? and what function in javascript? jquery $.post? heard that it can only access localhost. would be great with some guidance here and even better with some code examples. thanks!

• Problem with Japanese/International Characters with IIS7 URL Rewrite

  I have a friend with a Japanese blog, using wordpress, he has the pretty url. Basically domain.com/postname. Well an example of a url might be. "domain.com/???". His blog is hosted on an Apache web server. I am running IIS7 and am trying to get my Japanese blog going like it should, and have "domain.com/???" show just that one post when you visit that url. My thinking is it has something to do with url-encoding. I can't find too much information on utf-8 or anything about getting international characters to work in a url. Any help on this would be great. I am thinking I should change something in the web.config file, but not to sure. I haven't had a lot of experience with IIS7. Thanks.

  A little background: PEP 8 is the Style Guide for Python Code. It contains the conventions all python programmers should follow. pep8.py is a (very useful) script that checks the code formating of a given python script, according to PEP 8. Eclipse is a great IDE. With the Pydev extension, it that can be used to develop Python I run pep8.py manually when I'm scripting, but with bigger projects I prefer to use Eclipse. It would be really useful to integrate pep8.py in Eclipse/Pydev, so it can be run automatically in all the files in the project, and point to the lines containing the warnings. Maybe there is an obvious way to do it, but I haven't found it yet. Question is: How to integrate pep8.py in Eclipse?

• ANTLR JavaScript Target

  Hello, I have been using ANTLR to generate a parser + tree grammar for a mark up language with Java target which works fine. Now I am trying to get the target in JavaScript to use it in my web browser. However, I have not been able to locate any good documentation on how to go about doing this. I am using eclipse with ANTLR IDE, and when i specify the language as JavaScript, I get the following errors. Multiple markers at this line (10): internal error: group JavaScript does not satisfy interface ANTLRCore: mismatched arguments on these templates [treeParser(grammar, name, scopes, tokens, tokenNames, globalAction, rules, numRules, bitsets, labelType, ASTLabelType, superClass, members, filterMode)] (10): internal error: java.util.NoSuchElementException: no such attribute: filterMode in template context [treeParser] If anyone could help me out with this or point me to some material which I could read about the JavaScript target with ANTLR, it would be great. • Visual C# GUI Designer basic tutorial

  Hi, can you recommend a Visual C# Form Designer tutorial that is targeted at experienced programmers who have at least a basic knowledge of C# but are new to the VS C# Form Designer. At least it shouldn't be targeted at programming newbs, like Introduction to Visual C# 2008 Express Edition (it explains how a comment looks like in C#). So far I've found C# Programming Tutorial - Programming Winforms in C# on stackoverflow. Wishlist: ;-) I'm more interested in focus on the designer itself rather than an explanation of single gui-elements. In other words explaining separation between generated-code, what to not edit manually (visual-c#-designer-responsibility) and on the other hand the parts for which the programmer himself is responsible. So a little more abstract best-practice point of view pointing out some caveats would be great as well. I would prefer text over video as well, but that's minor. /Wishlist Perhaps even a Microsoft reference specific to the Visual c# forms designer (which I seem to have been unable to find) would be helpful.

• Clean stop of Python bottle webserver when started from subprocess

  Hello all, I would like to embed the great Bottle web framework into a small application (1st target is Windows OS). This app starts the bottle webserver thanks to the subprocess module. import subprocess p = subprocess.Popen('python websrv.py') The bottle app is quite simple @route("/") def index(): return template('index') run(reloader=True) It starts the default webserver into a Windows console. All seems Ok except the fact that I must press Ctrl-C to close the bottle webserver. I would like that the master app terminates the webserver when it shutdowns. I can't find a way to do that (p.terminate() doesn't work in this case unfortunately) Any idea? Thanks in advance

• ASP.NET MVC ViewModelBuilder Suggestions

  For anything but trival view models, I use a view model builder that handles the responsibility of generating the view model object. Right now, I use constructor injection of the builders into my controllers but this smells a little since the builder is really dependent upon which action method is being executed. I have two ideas in mind. The first one would involve a custom ActioFilter allowing me to decorate each action method with the appropriate builder to use. The second would be to add an override of the View method that is open to accepting a generic. This is what my code currently looks like. Note, the builder get injected via the ctor. [HttpGet, ImportModelStateFromTempData, Compress] public ActionResult MyAccount() { return View(accountBuilder.Build()); } Here is what option one would look like: [HttpGet, ImportModelStateFromTempData, Compress, ViewModelBuilder(typeof(IMyAccountViewModelBuilder)] public ActionResult MyAccount() { return View(accountBuilder.Build()); } Or option two: [HttpGet, ImportModelStateFromTempData, Compress] public ActionResult MyAccount() { return View<IMyAccountViewModelBuilder>(); } Any thoughts or suggestions would be great!
